Dave Weckel. Considered by many drummers to be the best living
drummer alive. Played with Chick Corea's Elektric Band, with the likes of
John Pattitucci & Frank Gambale. Monsters. Absolute monsters. All of 'em.
I'd have to agree. The man does stuff on a regular basis that
boggles the mind. As much as I love Mike P. & Neil's playing, Dave's better.

Well, see, you're really comparing apples & oranges. Chris
Squire's bass tone is extremely sharp & bright, overall. It really cuts
through, because they've cranked up that apparent brightness frequency.
Now, the tone fits nicely (and hey, there *Is* some bass in it, yes), in
the context of that band.
As for recording techniques, the most brilliant bass recording
system was accomplished by The Beatles. Without going into another
disseration, let's just say that lower frequencies are "bigger" than
higher ones. They move more air. You need a microphone (if you're miking
the cabinet) with a large diaphram that can capture these lower
frequencies.
What the Beatles did was to re-wire another bass cabinet so the
speakers acted as microphones, then pushed it up against Paul's amp.
That's why it sounds so full.
But, to answer your question, DT (having read the post about
Terry Date's lack of input) and Prater produced their respective records
using their own "experiences." If you listen to other Prater productions
(especially Firehouse) the bassist, who's playing pretty much straight
8th notes (you'd expect more?), his tone is full & warm, and takes up a
nice amount of space.
So, in a word, they really chose the wrong producer. =)

I have one more observation about the Awake cover and its
relation to the song LSOAD. Perhaps (I'm stretching here) since the
reflection in the mirror (the Lie, thanks Brian Neilsen, that was a good
idea) is in colour as opposed to the rest of "reality" one could say that
Lifting Shadows (greyscale) Off A Dream (the reflection of a young man
could be the dream of an old one). Whew! I was really stretching

Even songs with different intro's (like how they used to play the beginning of the mirror before take the time). I only have the Live at the Marquis disc, and I am curious about other material. I know this was discussed, but I don't remember an actual list (if there was one and I missed it, just e-mail me directly!)
3.) On the DT:Live in Tokyo video, did DT REALLY open for Skid Row??? (shocking disbelief!)
4.) Is there any way to keep the size of the digest form smaller than 32K? My mail reader dumps it into a file if it gets longer than that.

After hearing all of that stuff, I went to the library here at Ohio State and took out that book you recommended. I think it is an earlier edition than the one you have (3rd), but I find it very interesting. I have considered sound engineering as a career for quite some time, but there are no classes here in it. Oh well, I guess I hAe to go somewhere else now, assuming that I enjoy the rest of the book.
By the way, that snare on I&W drives me completely gaga!! I'm glad someone explained why it sounded the way it dd. For a while, I thought it could've been a drum machine.
My only complaint on AWAKE is that I find Kevin's keyboards hard to hear on many occasions. It seems as though they were a little too soft throughout the entire production. Does anyone else agree or disagree with this?
My last comment is on Derek. After seeing DT on Halloween night here in Columbus, I could not make any judgement at all on Derek. The reason for this is that at most times, I couldn't hear his keyboards AT ALL. The sound mixing was horrible. From what others are saying, though, he will be a fine addtion to DT No Kevin Moore, though. During his solo part in TTT, John Myung seemed very puzzled during the entire improv. This was because he couldn't figure out what key Derek was in. He kept looking at Derek with a confused look on his face. Finally, when Derek noticed with only about 30 seconds left in the improv, I sw him mouth the key, which was B flat. Anyway, this was only the biginning of the second week of the tour, so I don't hold anything against them, except for not being able to hear Derek (that's not really the band's fault). Sorry for such a long post.

Daivid Grohl is better than Portnoy, in the sense that he sucks at drums far better than Portnoy ever could. Even if Portnoy played a lame country 4/4 beat, Dave Grohl coudn't keep up. (Actually, from what I've heard, is that he's actually a good drummer behind the scenes of Nirvana). Even Green Day's drummer (and don't flame me for this, you have to admit it) is pretty good. He has plenty of speed which a drummer needs, it's just that his accuracy and selection of which drums to hit isn't very good.
BTW, Portnoy is still THE drum god. Reference Raistlin Majere to Takhisis, and... nevermind, save that for Dragonlance ftp... ChucK

Whilst speaking w/ Mike Portnoy after the Hammerjacks' show in fall of '94 we mentioned the list and he said "Yeet-say Jam," giving all three syllables equal accent. Drummers. :)
Most people are comfortable w/ Yeetsee.
Hairball is right on in his big production and frequency post. Thanks to him for telling it like it is.
I think Portnoy, Peart, and Zonder are all great. If you want another drummer who is all over the place, check out Sean Reinert from CYNIC. He's nuts!
A lot of people have a lot of great opinions about the cover of Awake. Cool.
I think John's bass on I&W and Awake is fine. I didn't before; all I could do was turn up the bass, but now I think that we miss it because it's so SUBTLE. You'll really miss it if it's not there. On the Denver, CO show from the Awake tour, there's a part at the end of LSOAD where the bass totally cuts out<poss. stepped on his cable; he does that a lot>and MAMA can you tell. My brother is a bass player, and he and I have the same philosophy--You should only hear the bass if it's NOT there. As far as Myung's tones are concerned, yeah, he uses a real trebly tone live. Personally, I think that's to make the intonation and attack come through, because in a studio situation, he's got a million studio processors making the intonation come through w/o sacrificing low end. I think his studio ton is nice and meaty--it's like a bass drum with more definite pitch. <JM doubles the bass drum frequently.> His tone on WDADU even has a little <very little> overdrive on it; reminiscent of early Geddy Lee. I just have Sony CD10 headphones and a low-end Magnavox Portable CD player <the disp. doesn't even show the time, just a track #!> and w/ the bass boost on, when I listen to PMU, it's about all the bass a white boy can take! :)

Yes, Dave Grohl is an accomplished drummer. I'd say he's average on my scale because I'm biased: I listen to DT and Rush... Compared to others though Grohl is average.
