Just received a press release from Roundtable Entertainment.

I don't have it front of me but it announces that Derek S. has been made a
    official member of the band.

I'll post the press release when I get to work...

    Hi y'all! Some thoughts:

    1) Somewhere on WDADU's liner The Ytse Jam has an accent aigou (French
thing) over the 'e'. I don't have the thing with me right now, but I'm
pretty sure it's there somewhere. So should ytse be pronounced "yit-SAY"
    or "it-SAY"? Possibly . . ..

    2) The best drummer thing: Peart is an amazing player. So is Portnoy.
The thing that I really like about Mike is his showmanship. Where Neil
will simply concentrate on his playing, Mike will stand up, spin
cymbals, twirl sticks, spit, etc.. I'm not saying that that makes him
better. But he sure is more fun to watch!

    3) I want a ytsejam shirt, too!!

    4) What's the latest on the EP situation?

    5) Go BABS Go!!

    6) I want a tape of the covers gig, too!!

    7) I'm really getting into Voices. That tune's got to be my favorite off
       of Awake.

I guess that's all for now! Later!!

Yeah, I hear ya about those space limitations... I would actually
be happy to host a Ytsejam-con in Phoenix (Chandler) Arizona, but since
it's so far from EVERYTHING... ah well. Damn shame, too. I have the whole
house available to me for it, and a huge TV set and awesome stereo system
(with FOUR, count'em FOUR hi-fi VCRs and two dual-cassette decks).. all
the stereo equipment is in different rooms but I could put together an
"electronics wall" for Jammers to do their trading and listening on. But
how many people here could feasibly come all the way out to Arizona for
what would essentially be a weekend-long party? I would have good beer
    available too.. :)

There *were* shirts. Jason Giles has said that there won't be anymore.
Jason Hough and I have been discussing alternative sources and will be
providing a solution soon. When we arrive at a solution, we'll let you

Sorry to take so long to get back to you... I had a heck of a week last week, which caused me to fall behind on my e-mail and Ytsejam reading. (We had a house guest over Presidents' Day weekend, and, a couple days later, my great-grandmother passed away. :'( Needless to say, I was pretty emotionally and physically worn down...)

Secondly, ladies (and gentlemen <g>), has there been any discussion on this yet? Let me know... I wouldn't mind chiming in.

Amen to all that. If it wasn't for all the indy and goth bands I'm into, there's no way I would've got into progressive rock or metal. Hell, I even listen to The Carpenters and Gloria Estefan when I'm in the mood. To group people just by the music they listen to, or look as if they'll listen to, is a real mistake. Every group has their 'sad' element, but every group has their stars as well.

Gee, that's funny; That's not what my "Audio In Media" or "Computer Applications In Music" texts say...hmm...

"It was determined several years ago that if the highest frequency in a signal were to be successfully encoded it had to be sampled at a rate at least twice its highest frequency*"

*- This concept was developed by a Bell Laboratories researcher named Harry Nyquist. To honor this discovery, the sampling frequency has been named the Nyquist frequency."

    p.189, "Audio In Media," Alten.

Eh, I'll go look for the C.A.I.M. book later. Might be in storage.

Three days ago I`ve been at the DT show in Berlin ! The show was even better than the concert in Hannover: The sound was better and we met the band! Set list was the same except that they played Surrounded and a Pink Floyd cover (from The Wall). During The Silent Man, Mike noticed my Ytsejam-Shirt and pointed at me! We met Derek before the show, he was very friendly. And after the show we were waiting at their tour bus and got autographs from all (except Myung, we missed him somehow). They said that the chance of releasing an EP isn`t good at the moment... Petrucci didn`t sign a "Bootleg"-T-Shirt that somenone had: even when he saw James` and Mike`s autograph`s on it, he just shook his head. Hmmm. And yesterday at the same place: Queensryche... DT played more like an orchestra, QR (especially Geoff Tate) more like actors... Okay, these were the concerts I waited for, now I`m happy...

Hope this hasn't been posted before from Norway, because if it has, alot of time has been wasted on this review instead of paying attention to classes. OK, here goes :

Review of DT / FW show at Rockefeller, Oslo, Norway 19 feb. -----------------------------------------------------------

What can I say about the show ? It was great (as expected).

Fates Warning opened right away 5 mins after the doors opened. (No not 'The Doors', but the doors at Rockefeller) Too bad for me that I came in 20 mins after Fates started. I missed 2.5 songs by Fates. They really did a great job on stage and Dibiase and Alder was really working. The stage at Rockefeller was to small for comfort I believe. When all DT's stuff was up there, Fates didn't have too much space to move around. Zonder was a god on drums, and I believe him and Aresti didn't make a single mistake during the whole show. They thanked the crowd for being so supportive, and I believe they didn't think they had that many fans in Norway, but they do. At least 200 out of the 1200 that was in there was really into their music, and when they did 11th hour and Monument they saved my day.

Well, about half an hour after Fates walked of stage DT came on. As expected the crowd went nuts. They opened with Pull me under, and I think it sucked. They seemed so uninspired and tired I thought this consert only would be OK. But was I wrong. Yes I was. As the show carried on they really went nuts on stage. Especially Portnoy who was 60 % of the show. I don't remember the sequence of the songs, but they played all the songs from Awake, except Space dye vest, Innocense faded and Scarred. They didn't play one song from WDADU, and that was not too cool I think, as that album is my favourite one. They played Mission Impossible, To live forever and Metallica's Damage Inc. without vocals. And Petrucchi nailed Kirk Hammet's solo perfect. There was a lot of cool moments during the consert. One was when LaBrie introduced Derek Sheridian (?). Portnoy throwed a towel at Derek. Derek throwed it back, and Portnoy throwed it back again hitting the keys of one of Dereks keyboards. Derek Throwed it back yet again in Portnoy's face, and LaBrie said: "Are you guys finished throwing towels back here ? " Portnoy answered by throwing the towel in his backhead. LaBrie seemed a bit tired of the towel business and throwed it back at Portnoy, while he introduced the next song, To live forever. Just when everybody, including LaBrie and the crowd, thought the towel business was over, Portnoy throwed it yet again, this time in Petrucchi's backhead when he was just about to start the song. Petrucchi couldn't help but smile at that and threw it (Guess where ?). Yes back at Portnoy. Would you believe that ? These guys are not normal, but everybody knew that I think. Well it all ended happily as the towel was thrown to the crowd. And it didn't return. Lucky guy who caught that towel soaked in Portnoys sweat !?!?!?! Blaaaahhhhhh......!

Well, I am not a big fan of The silent man, but it was great live I think. Maybe because of Petrucchi's end to that song. He began playing the chords to Jailhouse rock. And Portnoy was there immidiatly backing him up on congas. The rest of the band seemed a bit surprised, especially LaBrie who began to look around at John and Mike (who was smiling at each other) to see what they were up to. After a few seconds LaBrie started singing : "Went to a party in a county jail", and said "No I don't think so !", and the band broke up and started playing 6.00.

It was hard not to notice Portnoys's enthusiasm during the show. And when the show was finished he actually stage dived into the crowd. He did !! He ran across the stage and threw himself into the crowd a couple of meters from the stage. Poor old sod. They almost ripped his clothes of ! Then a big fat stageguy grabbed his leg and pulled him back onto the stage. That was some experience. They thanked the whole crowd for their support and for selling the house out that night.

And people went home happy as they could be. About 10 people hanged around to get their stuff signed. Me and a friend stayed at the backdoor for approx. 75 min (the time of a Awake CD), when Petrucchi came out. He was cool, and signed my CD. We talked a little about Dixie Dregs and Steve Morse, and I mentioned I really liked his solo show. It was not the average shred-ego-look-at-how-fast-I-can- play-show-thing, it was jazzy and real cool. He played with a clean guitar tone most of his solo number. He looked up and said : "Thank you very much. Nice to hear." Then he went into the bus and didn't come back out. Then Myung came along. And I couldn't believe how shy and quiet this guy was. He is the silent man. He signed my CD, and I told him his bass sound was much better now than last time they played here. They opened the european tour 25 oct '93 at rockefeller. He was suprised to hear that and said : "Oh, really ?" And i said that the tapping part in Metropolis was a lot clearer than last time. Perhaps it has something to do with me wearing earplugs this time around. Myung stayed for a long time and he checked that everyone had gotten what they were after, before slipping into the bus. I didn't talk to Derek or LaBrie, but got LaBrie's signature on my CD. After a while Mike "The Animal" Portnoy came out, with a lot of bags and stuff. He loaded them in the bus, before he was attacked by signature hunters. Portnoy is really the most down to earth guy of the five. Really interested in talking to the fans and taking pictures and stuff. My friend (who is a drummer) immidiatly started talking drumming and drums with him, and his eyes lit up when he realised this guy knew what he was talking about. The even argued on what drums was the best and talked about different drummers. As my friend is a huge YES fan, A.White and B.Bruford was a hot topic. After a while the tour manager came out of the bus, and told Portnoy that it was time to go. But Portnoy didn't listen. He stood there talking to my friend about drums and stuff. After 3-4 interuptions from the tour guy, Portnoy was dragged by the arm into the bus. He shook hands with my friend and said goodbye. The bus started moving, and they were on their way.

Hope this is a OK review of the show. I used a lot of time writing this down, and some of the people in my class can't understand why I at all bother using time on this, skipping lessons and being totally devoted to this DT thing.

Well, talk to you later. And let me know what you think about this post (Sorry about the lenght and all the spelling mistakes.)

Hello, Dream Theater enthusiasts! Well, I finally got my Internet connection and am able to say that I am glad to be a member of Ytsejam. It is so much fun to see you and now to be online to converse with all of you! Regards, John Myung. -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ OK, (taking off the John Myung mask) I think I might get flogged for the impersonation but I wanted to show you that all of our flames to SloppyJoe69 and all of our frustrations probably have been for naught. You are all right, it is only one person's viewpoint. But this person wasn't bold enough to come out and own up to it. Anonymity has it's benefits you can speak your mind and not get flogged for it. But in my book, if you can't stand by your words, your words aren't worth crap. Yes, there is no oal.com and there is no SloppyJoe69. Some of us who emailed his address and got the bounced message already know this. Ken is who tipped me off about the forgery in Digest 710. I did a little poking around and this is what I came up with. How was this person created? Easily, just as I *created* this post from John Myung. (Sorry John if you get this Ytsejam from the concert goers, no malice was intended. I am also a John M. and Korean too. Pass the bulgoki and kimchee! I've fooled with bass guitar but I actually sound like a strangling cow, so you have no fear of another John M filling your shoes! ;) ) Well, as I was saying, I was able to create a post, similar to like what this SloppyJoe69 did. I know in Unix, login names are only a max of 8 characters. I don't know about other systems and length of login names...but I know I wouldn't want a long login name and chances are the ethics committee anywhere wouldn't allow 69 or any derivitives thereof be in there anyway...

I've emailed Ken Bibb and got a little more info about the list. You do not have to be a list member to post to it. Anyone could create a phony email address and post to the list without actually being a subscriber. This is probably what happened. Someone outside touches off a controversy within the group and and we have dissention amoung the ranks. Very clever. Unfortunately, all of us got caught up in the firestorm. Myself included.

Thank you for allowing me to techno-babble and I hope this helps us out in a similar event if it should happen in the future. I am sorry for the long post but I figured that if John Myung spoke, EVERYONE would listen. ;)

Your humble servant, joining the list of the multiple first names like Chuck...

John M., no the other John M. (Johnny)

Hello Ytsejam's, it's Babs. I see that a few of you are scrambling to find ytsejam t-shirts. I just got mine in the mail the other day and I highly recommend them. The name of the guy with the t-shirt is Jason Giles and his e-mail address is:

    gilesmj@ccmail.apldbio.com

Try to e-mail him, it might take him a few days to get back to you. I do have his address, but I don't want to just hand that out without his permission, so try that first. Good luck! -BABS

I don't think they even know how to pronounce it. Everything about the band is hard to pronounce. John Petrucci (pronounce pe-tru-ch-ee) John Myung (pronounced Mi-ung). It's all a trick of the mind.

That's cool. I just couldn't find anything in over 90 min. tapes, except for memorex. I didn't want to use a memorex either because Maxell's make way better copis from CD. Sorry about that...

It's 180 degrees but it's a dry heat. In Houston they say that? No, you're all mixed up, why do you think they have the swimming pools?

This door is LOCKED! (mumblings) If your not home by 9:00, you had better find somewhere else to sleep...(or something like that, I can't hear that one as well, BTW, these are all samples from TV shows, movies etc.)

These are in the second interlude to Space-dyed Vest. The first interlude was posted a few digests back, taken from the movie, a Room with a View? Has anyone figured out what movie the preacher in the middle sample of Voices was taken from?

Hey, guys, let's just end this discussion by saying they're all gods, but just different ones in which we worship (sort of like Dragonlance, heh, heh, I knew I wasn't trippin' on acid when I wrote that, was I?) Some people like Peart, some like Zonders, and some like Portnoy (hell, this other guy even likes posers (no offense) like Dave Grohl (sort of the Jubilex god of drummers)). Those of you who do not know what I'm talking about, forget it, 'cause someone else does. (I hope) End of discussion.

I like using a pick because it's easier for me to do four finger hammers on it (yes, I like to use those, even on bass). I'm not skilled enough yet for 10 finger taps, yet (heh). Anyway, in a couple of songs my band has, it sounds rediculous for me using the pick because it's a slow song, and then thing pick up and rip shit by the end. I love finger picking through it, but I can't keep up through the fast part that way. I can't hold the pick in my teeth because I song backups. Does anyone know where I can get a polyester pick? I've used pencil erasers for picks and it souds just like your fingerpicking it. God, what a boring and pointless post, nuff said.

No kiddin? That's my favorite DT song of them all (so far). I wish I could hear what Change of Seasons is like. Everyone else seems to swear by it... (Where does everyone get the Dance of Eternity 2CD set from, anyway, I can't find it anywhere!)

I guess you can't really tell from most of the stuff out, but "Inside Out" has TONS of little intricacies, especially on the hi-hat and rides and crashes (along with the double bass) that is really all over the place, but in an organized, musical sense (if that makes any sense) - he is really an impressive drummer, esp. thru headphones where you can here everything a bit better (at least for me)
