Hi 'Jammers,
After a few weeks of lurking, I'm feeling the need to toss out a comment or 2:
1. Drummers: music is too subjective to say who's "The Best". A lot of guys say Peart is the best rock drummer ever. Some drummers laugh at that and point toward guys like Greg Bisonette (sp?) or Steve Smith. By the way, someone made a reference to a drummer named "Dave Wreckl". His name is Dave Weckl and he's an absolutely amazing jazz drummer. He has his own solo CD out called "Hard Wired" that's incredible (it's sitting on my desk right now).
However, I am enjoying the Mike vs. Neil comments that everyone is making. In the end, just remember that they are both very, very good and neither is really "better" than the other.
2. Sorry to hear about the G. Cowboys breaking up. Is this rumor or is this really true? By the way, I like the recent post someone made about some of the ex-GC guys jamming with the boys from King's X. I'm a big GC and KX fan. That would be one awesome session.
3. Whoever posted about Steve Taylor, count me in. I've been a fan since "I Want to Be a Clone". Remember the song "Lifeboat"? Speaking of great Christian bands, anybody ever heard of Daniel Amos (aka Swirling Eddies)?
Later.

I would like to concur that Rush's Presto album is the best mixed album that I have heard. But it does sound kind of tinny compared to other albums.
How this for a dream band?

Actually, I find it kind of interesting how everyone is talking about the mix in the studio, when the biggest problem I've seen is the mix when they play live. I went to the Portland, OR show at the Roseland theater on November 29, and not only could I barely hear the keys, but James' voice was practically undetectable.
I knew I wasn't imagining it when at one point, I think when they were playing 'Voices', James was right in the middle of singing a phrase, and he just stopped, tilted his head as if listening, then looked at JP and shrugged, as if he couldn't tell any difference. And the funny thing is that there really wasn't a difference between when he was singing and when he wasn't. And when he had to sing softly, he kept plugging one ear to make sure he was in tune (I'm not sure if this is now a regular habit with him, but I didn't notice him doing anything like that when I saw them the year before on the I&W tour...which, by the way, I saw in the same venue, and didn't notice any problems. In fact I distinctly remember being blown away by James' voice, and in fact the entire band...it wasn't long after seeing them live that first time that they ascended to the rank of My All Time Favorite Band).
I think a lot of people were enjoying the show, because it was really rocking, and the drums and bass were thump-thump-thumping away, but I was kind of disappointed because I didn't want to see just another loud rock concert, I wanted to see extremely talented musicians do their stuff, and I only got part of the package. I brought a friend along, who I know would've been blown away just like me if he had seen them last year, but who just thought it was a good concert (ie, another loud rock concert).
So, has anyone else had this experience, or is this just an isolated incident? I hope DT doesn't always turn the instruments up to the point that it hurts to listen (yes, there were a couple times I felt actual pain in my ears for a couple seconds). Has anyone seen them in multiple venues and can comment on which theaters are good to see them in? I don't mind if the music is loud, just so long as I can hear everyone playing.
Comments welcome, flames ignored...

Topic #1 -- "Best" Drummer:
Recently, I've been reading a lot of opinions about the "best" drummer. Dave Weckl (note the spelling!), Neil Peart, Mark Zonder, Buddy Rich, Mike Portnoy, etc etc etc.
First off, the label of "best" is so subjective so as to be nearly meaningless. Nearly all of these drummers are near the top of the class in their own respective ways. Weckl is an *unbelievable* technical master, but IMHO he's not very *musical*. Compare his solo efforts to his Chick Corea days. Much more balanced *musically* under the auspices of Chick than on his own. Not to take away from his technical prowess...
Buddy Rich (and don't forget Gene Krupa!) were also technically brilliant, but also had a broader, more general, more *musical* flair that's not limited to just a drum kit. And then there's Louie Bellson, who has been at the top of jazz drumming for 40 years. If you get the chance to see him, DO IT! :)
In the progressive rock/metal regime, the arena is no clearer. There's Neil, of course. His technical style is well documented and imitated. Yet there is a musical flavor that is so very uniquely Neil's. He draws the listener to every subtlety in each roll and fill, and he knows when to 'cut loose' and when to reserve himself (or not overplay, in any case!). His lyric-writing and composition skills are exemplary. Nuff said.
Now, there are a series of very good musicians who are forging the rock/metal drumming scene in other ways. Innovative drummers like Matt Cameron of Soundgarden, Mike Portnoy of DT (of course!), Chad Gracey of Live, Matt Zonder of Fates Warning, etc etc. All of these guys have made strides in adopting new and innovative drumming techniques. Some are more technical, some are more groove-beased, but all are awesome rock drummers today. And this is only a partial list of course. I think it's very exciting to see drumming really moving forward these days -- especially after the 80's when there was some real stagnation...
Topic #2 AWAKE Cover
Michael Van Opstall writes:
> Here's my awake cover opinions:
> Scarred - like someone else said about the factory, or the baldness of > the man in the mirror
Did EVERYBODY ignore that image of Jupiter (during the SL-9 collision) at the top right side? If it is an image of the impact (it is kinda small, and that black blotch may or may not be the impact site...), then it's clear that it's been "Scarred".
Well, WHY ELSE would it be there? Just decorative? Possibly...
TOPIC #3: Mixing and Production
<someone> wrote:
> The album that has the absolute best mix has got to be Rush Presto. You can > hear each individual instrument prefectly!! Rupert Hine is a genius.
I'd agree that the separation of instruments is very clear and distinct. But jeez! The instrumentation is sooooo processed, it's not funny! Neil's bass drum[s] on both Presto and Roll the Bones sound like he's hitting a pillow! The drumming sounds sharp, but overly so. It comes off sounding 'tinny', and not at all full-bodied and natural sounding. This 'small' sound is what Rupert is known for. I don't think it's very agreeable.
I'd say the production style on Counterparts and Awake is infinitely better! The drum production is remarkable (esp on CP), and the rich, "organic" essence of the music comes right through. No comparison... IMHO

Must have something to do with bassists. The other night on stage my guitarist couldn't go wireless, so our show wasn't panning out to be as energetic as usual. I finally got center stage and started doing these rapid spins during a simple bass line, when my hair stuck to my face, my singer's mic stand reached out and grabbed my right foot in mid spin, and I took a dive into a crash cymbal or two. Knocked it into my drummer, who trying to catch it, crushed his hand with it. Cool thing is, I didn't miss a note.

I don't have the Pull me under one. If someone still has it, would they send it to me, too? (reischar@ucs.isu.edu) Also, I'll get to like 2112, when I start listening to it again. I'm really trying to get started on my Fates Warning stuff right now, not really Rush. I just bought No Exit yesterday, and found it rather good. I like the drummer on this one rather than Zonders also. It stunned me when I heard all kinds of fills and PROMPT time changes. I can't stand subtleties. Subtle doesn't catch your attention. No flame on Zonders, though. He's still a better drummer than I am. (considering I don't play drums).

Hi!
I think the thread about the (in)audible bass on I&W is interesting. I'm not having any problem with hearing the bass on I&W, (but I don't have a problem with hearing the keys on Awake either so I'm biased), but that might be mostly because I'm a bass-player myself. I know (I have learned) what to listen for, and I think that the bass is just what it's supposed to be on I&W. I don't think there's any musical room for louder or more aggressive bass. That might fit with Anglagard and Jaco Pastorius or Rush but remeber that DT is a four-piece (I know they're actually a five-piece, yes! :-)) and with heavy distorted guitars and complex keyboard-arrangements there isn't much room for the bass. And I actually prefer the bass when it's hard to hear, not like that four-string-lead-guitar on WDADU :-)

Hello again!
I just remembered the thing that I wanted to tell all of you after seeing DT in Stockholm the 20th of Feb. When walking home that night I promised that I would write first thing in the morning and tell you but I forgot.
We previously talked about the lyrics to the mirror and said that "how on earth could you possibly..." would fit better than "how the hell..." or whatever he sings. When hearing DT perform the Mirror live last tuesday I think I heard just that one lyric-line changed. Yep, I'm 80% sure, if there are other Swedish ytsejammers with opinions please tell me! And jammers in other countries, listen for this moment when you're seeing DT live the next time, I think James has changed it!
I haven't made up my mind yet if that's amazingly cool or not, but I probably think it is!

On to the third topic of the day:
I saw Queensryche live last Sunday and I must say that if there's anyone that really is god, it's Geoff Tate! I command all of you: Go and see Queensryche when they're playing your town, (Americans will probably have to wait until late-95). Extremely good show, enthusiastic crowd, great setlist including all songs from Promised Land and most of Operation Mindcrime (not Suite Sister Mary however). Great staging with the 2 screens and lots to look at and to listen for. Best sound I've ever experienced on a concert and also probably the most flawless performance.
I apologize for the lack of DT-content but I think this was important!

Now that this dream band stuff has come up again, I thought I'd flamebait a bit and name my NIGHTMARE BAND. So ladies and gentlemen (drumroll, please):
Bass - That egoist from Manowar (this guy's been playing years and still doesn't know the bass is a RHYTHM instrument... He really should have chosen the guitar..) Guitar - Kurt Cobain (self-explanatory) Drums - The guy from Scorpions! (BTW: I've heard him play a fill!! live!! Maybe he got carried away a bit.) Keys - This is a tough one. How about.. Uhm. Who played the keys on Inside Out? That sequenced bit in The Monument is HILARIOUS. :)
I guess that's enough!! Hope you don't mail bomb me too much, boys and girls, because I just mentioned your favorite artists! :) Gee, I think I need some sleep! Dream on everyone!

Just because Neil says Buddy is the best does that make it so? Buddy Rich was an incredible drummer, no doubt. You may want to listen to some other players, though, before saying he was the best. For instance, Louis Bellson was a lesser-known contemporary of Buddy's but one doesn't have to listen to him long before realizing that he's as good if not better than Buddy. His chops were just as good as Rich's but Bellson *felt* the music much better and his phrasing, IMHO, was much better than Buddy's. Just my opinion, of course, and sorry for the non-DT content.

Hey, guys, what's Up? Just wanted to express my extreme pleasedness (hey, did I make that up?) with this production thread. I have been very displeased with the lack of Myung's presence on the last two albums--hell, even looking along with the bass line in TTT, you can still barely make it out--and he's shreddin'! It's a true disgrace. If they could just give him Ged's bass tone from Signals or MP, now that would be cool. But whoever raved about Presto's production must be smokin'--I listened to it for the first time in a long time, and was taken aback by how thin the production was. Hell, and not only is Rupert Hine not a genius, he tried to turn Rush into a pop band! His two albums are the worst (relatively, of course, they do have their moments) in my opinion. The ytse convention idea sounds pretty cool, though doing covers would be TRES difficult--let's face it, Metropolis is not Wild Thing! Thanks again goes to Hairball for the insight.
Later, folks, and keep sheddin' the I&W transcriptions!

Hey all,
Babs, this is a truely great idea and I think James would be utterly stoked! I think that since its most likley impossible for us all to meet in one place that we should all plan our local con's as close to the same day as possible. Then maybe a phone conversation with other sites or even people donating their computers for a massive online party.? (I'm not to sure if that's possible?!?) Then maybe once everyone is online everyone could sort of "sign on" with their addresses so everyone accross the world would know who's attending and who's not. Just a thought. Until next time,

More ramblings . . . .
1) Looking for the symbol for "Scarred" on the cover of Awake? I've got an idea: Remember the WDADU cover, and that guy is being branded with the DT symbol? That would leave a scar!! heheheh Now look at the Awake cover. The DT symbol is down there, "scarring" the otherwise flawless plain. Oit could be the factory, or . . . .
2) Look at the Majesty CD (the one from '86 that says Majesty on it). Notice how on the CD, right inside the clear plastic part, it says MAJESTY. But it says it on the back! So, when looked at from the front, it says "YTSEJAM"! Maybe that's where they got the idea of spelling it backwards. Or maybe . . ..
Until next time!
ps- I'm tellin' ya, Voices is soooooo awesome!!

SUBCONSCIOUS CD Update!
I've been playing with the pro pressing equipment all day, after going this morning to the shop and having the straaaaaaaange procedure of a GLASS MASTER made for Subconscious. I can assure you all that this will hang on my wall when it's over! :) I never knew you had to make glass masters, but now I do... oh well.
I also took a pile of blanks to test pressings with. I'll be able to do the vast majority of pressings, as I said, in several weeks, when the blanks come in. I only have maybe a dozen anyway right now.
Ah, but I digress. I had to make some critical choices since the making of the glass master pretty much finalized the setlist... I can no longer change it unless I want to spend a needless $450 more on a new cut glass master. :( But I can only hope I got it up to snuff for you all, and hope you enjoy it. I've listened to a test disc and the sound in the good tracks is SUPERB, in the marginal tracks above average, and even in the bad tracks (WDOA and Gorilla) it's listenable and better than most boots. I think the vast sound improvment has to be due to the plain outright sound fidelity of the CD format.
Here goes nothing, time to jump and pull the parachute! :)
1. Eve (Limelight, NYC 3/4/93 w/samples "Guide us on...") 5:38 2. A Change of Season (Limelight, NYC 3/4/93 LaBrie on vocals) 20:04 3. O Holy Night (studio, Dominici on vocals) 4:20 4. Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight (studio, Dominici on vocals) 6:24 5. Don't Look Past Me (To The Sun) (studio, Jon Hendricks on vocs) 6:35 6. Wanted Dead or Alive (joke, Rich Kern on vocs and Moore & Kern in the background making fun of it) 5:20 7. To Live Forever (acoustic version, LaBrie on vocals) 4:42 8. The Gorilla Session (most of it, anyhow, Petrucci solo) 3:10 9. Mission: Impossible theme (studio demo) 1:26 10. The Bad Back Jam (RPM Warehouse, Toronto, 10/25/94) 5:21 11. Awake Heavy Jam (Majestic Theater, San Antonio, 11/14/94) 4:00 12. Experiment (see notes below, Tucson, 12/4/94) 1:40
For a total time of 68:20! Whew! Notes:
8. I noticed in pre-recording that this was long, tedious, and boring, even for a guitar nut like me. I took the best three minutes or so out of the six total.
10. Remember this? Mike Portnoy had to see a chiropractor in the middle of the show, and John, John, & Derek jammed in his stead? It'll never happen again, and here is that jam.
11. This is the later jam that was brought into the set in the place of TOWHTSTS, and this is a particularly excellent recording of it.
12. I wanted to save this as a surprise, so I didn't mention it till now. When I met Mike Portnoy after the show in Tucson, he tossed me a tape he said he had copied from Petrucci's recorder. It's a short acoustic song that seems to be taking shape. Of course, for all I know, Mike could be bullshitting me and it's really himself, or Myung, or whoever. I hope you enjoy it, whatever the hell it is. :) Most of the rest of the tape was aimless guitar noodling.
Take care all! I've already received quite a few orders, and I'm genuinely impressed that you're willing to go the extra mile early, to get your CD. It takes a certain kind of integrity to send money weeks before shipment and trust that it will be worth it. Thanks to all.
