Damn! Maybye I'll go to Arizona instead of Idaho for my

so fucking hot in Southern AZ during the summertime. Oh
shit! Thanks for the DOL CD Mike, I like it. Sorry about

This isn't intended to be a flame, just some information...

I usually don't care all that much about spelling, but after
seeing it spelled "Zonders" several times, and now seeing
his first name typed as "Matt," I just think it's about time
everyone knew that the drummer from Fates Warning's name is

                            Mark Zonder

And he's my favorite drummer. If you want to know why, listen
to Point of View (from Parallels) and Monument (from Inside Out.)
I also really like Fates' old drummer, Steve Zimmerman, and
his work on No Exit is, in my opinion, some of the best produced
drumwork out there. The snares just hit *so* hard...

The DT Song Poll is done, and all the results have been compiled and
arranged into text files to be uploaded to the list but...
I'm having problems sending them to the list. I have access to 3
different accounts (on different servers even), and none of them (yet)
will allow me to properly ship this stuff off.

I'll try to fix this problem and mail this stuff ASAP.

    Hi!

Apparently, the other mail I sent last week got lost (shouldn't have sent it from my home account), so here's the story again (and updated). :-)

Last Friday, I met Mike at the Queensryche show in Hamburg (great stuff), whom I spotted standing at the soundboard booth, as someone else (hi, Olf!) has already told you guys. I immediately asked him for an autograph, and he signed my jeans jacket and drew an awesome DT logo (thanks, Mike!). I was so surprised to see him that I didn't ask any questions (besides "Where's James?", who was supposed to be there, too). I made up for that three days later at an in-store event in Bremen, on the day of their gig here. I talked to him for a little while -- he was again clown of the crew, all the others looked rather bored/serious/exhausted :-) -- and he told me to say "Hi!" to all you guys here on Ytse Jam! Well, I've done it now, fulfilled my duty. :-)

I was at the DT shows in Bremen on Monday and in Hamburg last night and it was just fabulous (big surprise :->)! They covered Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers", that fudgin' rocked!

    Bye, Matt

    He Dr. Mosh,

I have to strongly disagree with you about the Nuquist frequency. I'm studieing Electrical Engineering and I've learned the Nyquist frequency is twice the bandwith of the signal you want to sample. For instance for audio with a bandwith of (20kHz-20Hz)=20kHz you need a minimum sample rate of 40kHz. In the CD system they have chosen 44,1 kHz because of problems with filtering. As I wrote at the Ytsejam mailing list in Pasc (and Atrac also) Philips (and Sony) uses masking effects to reduce the amount of bits needed to encode the music. Masking has nothing to do with the Nyquist frequency, and Nyquist has nothing to do with the SPL of the music to be heard by a human being.

I'm quite surprised that nobody has discussed Cairo's new (first) CD before. The album is out for 4 weeks now or so. It's a great album in the veign of Kansas, Shadow Gallery, Magallon, Yes, Saga, IQ and King Crimson. Some solo's remind me of DT however. The album has 6 (long) songs on it. The best one (IMO) is 'Silent Winter'; it has some great parts. The last song, which lasts for over 20 mins., does remind me of King Krimson and DT. Somebody else on this list has this album? (BTW: it's on the Magna Carta label) Cairo has contact with their fans on internet. Anyone got their address? Cheers,

    > My Dream Band Consists of: > > Lead Vox - Geoff Tate > Backing Vox - James Labrie > Lead Guitar - John Petrucci (Go Fig.) > Rythm Guitar - Adrian Smith > Bass Guitar - Les Claypool (Or Steve Harris if Les Declined) Yes, Les Claypool is COOL! As we are discussing about bassist and bass sounds I wonder if there weren't any PRIMUS fans on the list, especially amongst the bassists as I am. Les Claypool, their bassist and vocalist, has, IMHO, developed a totally weird, unique technique of slapping, popping and tapping his fretless(!!) 6-string Carl Thompson Bass and so created his very individual sound, but I wonder if his"dominating" style would fit in the above line-up... Btw, he's a RUSH fan, too, I guess: Ever heard the beginning of "Yyz" played live as an intro to "John the fisherman" ?

HMM! Not a bad idea! =)

Actually, to be honest, I did recieve a few requests for my back mail posts...and, up on searching through my computer files, found a few other text files & ramblings that I had previously written.

What I really need is a site to u/l the text files to (provided they'll go with the ''s and "'s, not 7's & U's...ugh, i hate that!), so anyone who wants to can d/l 'em.

    Anyone?

    > Has anyone figured out what movie the preacher in the > middle sample of Voices was taken from?

Actually, to be honest, it sounds like Mike. Believe it or not, I'm almost inclined to put money on it (if i had any!). I've spoken to him on the phone and in person, and, I seriously think it's him...then again, if I'm wrong, I'm the first to admit it. =)

Speaking of that, I've spoken to a few engineering friends about Doc's assessment of what "Nyquist" is, and mine, and, so you all know, the Nyquist Frequency is not the SPL required for people to hear sound (or whatever he came up with).

Of course, talking to engineers (pros, mind you) can be a mistake, because they can start talking about the short-comings of all this stuff...

Anyway, I'm not flaming, just trying to inform. =)

Take it easy, all... That annoying guy who keep babbling about shit most people don't care about, Hairball

Well, as I've probably posted a few dozen times, I've met most of the guys in DT. Guess who was never around? (kevin...) Though, I did do an interview with him via the phone, I have to say Mike was much cooler, from an interviewing standpoint...it turned into a 45 minute conversation. =)

Anyway, Mike's always happy to talk to fans. Pursuant to the post from the guy from Norway (UFF DA!* I forgot his name!), Mike will sit & chat, even when people are yelling & screaming for him to move his ass. =)

The only person I've seen get him to move was his girlfriend (I think that's what he said, I was TOTALLY F.U.B.A.R. last time I saw him. Due to this, I forgot to turn on the flash on my camera before I gave it to the dude who took our picture. <sigh> Anyway...) =)

I remember one incident with this guy Dave (who was from Florida, and going to the Univ. of PA (Penn), which is right where I live in Philly). Mike, me, and Dave were standing around shooting the shit, like we had before, and Dave suggests we play the drum part coming out of the "piano" break in LtL. So, all three of us break into it (of course I fell out, 'cause I'm not a drummer!) on the bar counter. The mob that had surrounded John P. looked over, shrugged, and went back to what they were doing.

Other contact stories: Oddly enough, I never really had a serious discussion with John P., considering it's my main instrument. Was more of a roundhouse discussion of guitarists about stuff. I eventually split & went to talk to Mike.

I talked to James. He was cool, for the most part. My then roommate kinda pissed him off, because he said something that was pretty common knowledge for most DT fans ("Did you sing on the 1st record too?") I saved James the trouble of explaining it to him. =) Anyway, this was the 2nd time I saw DT, and this is where the convo between me & James about David Prater took place.

John Myung. Man of Mystery. He was friendly, but, I could tell he wasn't talkative. A funnier story came from the drummer in my old band. Eric (the drummer) went outside of the venue for a smoke. He saw John standing around, and went up to him.

Eric: "Hey, you're John Myung!" John: "No I'm not." Eric: "Yes you are..." John: "...well, yeah, I am, but, be quiet."

    =)

Hello everyone, it's BABS. This is in response to the guys in the mid-west about a convention - I want you to know that all is welcome. I realize that the cost is holding a lot of people back. I should have some prices today from the Uniondale Marriott. Also, I see where someone from the mid-west was mentioning their home for a party, save me a room I will need a place to go and hide after all of this is done. I might have to run away to Canada and visit my mother's family to get my sanity back. Talk to you all later.

Hello again, it's BABS. I want to voice my opinion on all the controversy regarding drummers (i.e. Portnoy vs. Peart, Dave Grohl sucks, etc.). I'm only 4'11" tall, but hear me roar - "KNOCK IT OFF". Just think how silent our world would be without any of them? I am a devote DT fan, but I also love all music (yes, even techno). I don't want to hear any more bashing especially of Nirvana, they too are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars, and have their right to be here too, like you and me. I'm done preaching now. I think that this convention thing is stressing me. Talk to you all later. -BABS

Someone told me that Dream Theater was going to be opening for Van Halen on their upcoming tour. Is that true? I've also heard that Collective Soul would be opening.

    Any info would be appreciated.

Well... from reading all of the reviews of the European shows, it seems like DT are really playing around with their set lists, and doing some really cool stuff... So... (you all know what comes next :) does ANYONE have tapes of some of the shows that they went to... I am really looking for some of these incredible shows... I have ALOT of shows to offer in trade... (probably one of the biggest collection around...)

    Dream band considerations:

Choose 1 (or more :) ) from each catagory ... some of these combinations may be obtuse or even comical, however, I included some players that I haven't seen mentioned (either that means, I have my head in me arse or I maybe just approached the issue differently): Please don't flame me for my spelling, I'm doing this from memory, hence, mea culpa if I've offended anyone.

    Guitar:

JP (after all this is the Ytsejam list) Eric Johnson Frank Gambale Brett Garsed Alex Skolnick Tony MacAlpine Greg Howe Michael Schenker Harry Cody

    Bass:

JM Steve Harris Stu Hamm Billy Sheehan Andy West Dave LaRue

    Keys:

Kevin Moore Tony MacAlpine (ok, he solos like a guitarist; but it is MY list) :) Paul Raymond (ok, he doesn't solo at all, I just like old UFO) Steve Walsh

    Drums:

MP Niel Peart Rod Morgenstren (stien?) Ex: Winger, Dregs Atma Anur Dean Costronovo Chad Wackerman Dave Weckle Mark Zonder

    Vocals:

Ooops, sent it before even editing... Anyway, Driving to school this morning, I totally pumped the low EQ in my car, (normally I don't do this, I have shitty Jensen speakers, but a nice stereo) and I was listening for the bass in Another Day. I really couldn't hear it as much as I could feel it, and everyone was right. But, when I started listening to 6:00, the bass totally jumped out at me. There are sooo many nifty parts where John M. goes off and solos that you can't really hear it's pathetic. I think the reason for this, is if you listen to Erotomania, All of the low end is sort of drowned out, but you can hear his high end extremely well. He saves all of his tone for soloing, and lead fills. (i.e. the intro to Voices) Solos, such as the one in The Ytse Jam (I think this is the one) would not be as audible if he had the low end as audible as the high end. Everytime he drop to a lower string, you would notice the difference way too much. It would pound a lot more and really throw your attention off. I notice this playing my bass. Too much low EQ really screws up everything. ChucK

I took these off of the studio album. I can almost talk along with all of the samples on the tape. Driving through town I find myself chanting "6:00 on a Christmas morning" over and over again... The only one I've yet to figure out is "He doesn't love you, he only wants you as something to look at like a picture or an ivory box..." I think it's been posted before... My only prob is that I don't know where hardly any of them come from...

My Kevin Moore demos hopefully will be here soon (thanx Jen!!!)

    Hi, jammers

The guy that said that the end of PullMeUnder was "Ooh that this too to SULLIED flesh would melt" made me start to think. This morning I looked it up in my dictionary ( I'm not familiar with the word). It ( SULLY ) ment something like : getting not worthy, black, unvirgin,, or something

Hey this makes sense, I thought The line is said after Hamlet and his mother and stepfather all are dying due to poison. Their souls were SULLIED , I thought

But today I talked to our library-man. He looked it up in his book and find the answer: It is solid, and that's solid.

That somehow concludes that subject I belive, and here is another: Fav band: Moore keys Portnoy drums LaBrie singing Petrucci guitar Myung bass This is a band that I KNOW is good, I doubt you can put a lot of wonderful player, each in their band, and think that the "dream-band" would be as good. It's a matter of how well you fit together. But this is the "Swedish" way of thinking of things. Often in sport we don't have the best players, but still we do win many matches, just because we fit together. You Americans do have another way of looking at things , I believe.

    SoLong dudes.

Hello everyone, it's BABS. Here is an update on the convention:

I spoke with the Uniondale Marriott in Long Island. I have tentatively reserved a block of 25 rooms. The room rate is $99. for single or double occupancy. They have put aside a banquet room for a dinner, the dinner is priced at $25 per person. Now before you all have whiplash from these prices let me further explain that we would get use of the pools, jacuzzi's, work out facilities, saunas, etc. I checked with the coordinator's and asked if their was a dress code, and further explained who we are and that a lot of people would be the t-shirt/dress shirt and jeans type and they did not have a problem with it. I also assured them that we would be on our best behavior :) Now again, I wish to stress that this is not written in ink or my blood - so if you all are not in agreement of this price we can somehow try to pursue other areas (please be merciful). Also, we can add more rooms if necessary. I just thought that it would be wise to start out small. I am currently still trying to get a hold of DT's management as we well as get a hold of John Petrucci. All right everyone, I am done with the update. I am ready for your input, and to discuss the price. SAVE YOUR PENNIES EVERYONE! -BABS
