Hello ytse's, it's Babs. I think that I forgot to tell you that the target
date for the convention is Saturday, June 17. It was the best date available
since I had all those weddings to compete with. Also, I just remembered that
Father's Day is June 18 - so you will all be free for that. -BABS

This is a mass mailing.
I just got the word from our drummer that our band will be playing in
NEW YORK CITY!
THE DATE: Next Thursday (March 9th)
THE TIME: 10-ish
WHERE : The R-Bar, 273 Church St. (Between Franklin & White)
HOW MUCH: No Cover, to my knowledge.
For those of you who have never heard us, let me just describe the band;
It's a hybrid between Phish, The Grateful Dead, Kansas, The Allman Bros.
and varied Blues influences.
If you're in the NYC area (and some of you are, which is why you got this
mailing!) please try to stop in. It would be appreciated.
Any Questions? Send email to me (hairball@astro.ocis.temple.edu), and
I'll answer them the best that I can.
Thanks!
A very excited Hairball

Well, there's several good publications around. There's books
written on studio building. And, again, I'd highly recommend Stanley
Alten's "AUDIO IN MEDIA" textbook. Regardless of how much or little you
know about it, you'll learn something.
It's published by Wadsworth Publishing Company, Belmont, CA
94002. Its ISBN # is 0-534-19602-0.

This seems like a great way to attract some flames...
Here's mine...
Vocals -- Milli Vanilli (Heh, heh, what vocals?)
Backup vocals -- Salt n' Pepa (ICK!)
Lead guitar -- Garth Brooks (Lot's of rippin' shit here...)
Rhythm guitar -- Billy Jo (from Green Day, I think that's his name)
Bass -- This one kid I saw in a music store who thought he was really
cool, until I played Anasthesia and he bowed to me.
Drums -- They'll just use a drum machine...
Heh, heh.

I like King's X and Galactic Cowboys a lot, too. I heard about a
concert with Galactic Cowboys, King's X, and Precious Death. That
show would have rocked. For those who don't know about Precious
Death, they are a band much like GC and KX, but they're on Metro One
Records (mainly constrained to distribution in the Christian
bookstores...). They are very similar to GC and King's X. Check 'em
out- their 2 albums _Southpaw_ and _If You Must_ were also
distributed by Sony for a bigger market. (I hear that the concert
was a "side thing.")

Yes! the second book Elven Star has been my favorite so far also! A)
Because Zifnab is a predominant character, and B) Weis and Hickman craft
such a great story, so sad, yet just funny enough to remind you that the
authors aren't depression maniacs. :)
However my friend swears that book 6 is the best. I just started it. Some
interesting twists right at the beginning of the book! We find out a
little more about what Xar has up his sleve and that he isn't as powerful
or all-knowing as we though. Just go buy book 6, i've bough every 1-6,
but will probably check out 7 if it isn't out in paperback when I am
ready to read it.
Again, all Ytsejamers! If you like reading books, read the Death Gate
cycle. Weis and Hickman are masterful authors.

You want NIGHTMARE BANDS now, I got one: Dark Angel. I've heard their debut album and they boasted the most riffs on an album ever. It does, but their is no consisitency, the singer could be good, but can't find a melody over a million riffs. This band is by far a Nightmare.

Ok, since I was asked for an opinion on YTSECON, I would agree with the
suggestion that we should go with the smaller, regional gatherings for
now, so we can get to know each other, throw some ideas around and get
better organized for a large scale thing. I am all for Southern Cali
ytsecon, I think I've met all San Diego area ytsejammers by now (if
there is somebody in SD I don't know yet, please speak up! ;) a couple
from LA as well, so I know there are a lot of really cool people around
here. And!!! If we do that... we might have a wonderful visitor from
Canada as well! (Hi Tim! :)
In YTSEJAM digest 727, Mats Rydstrom writes:

You're kidding! Yeah, I was the one who suggested that line would sound
better with "on earth" the first time instead of "the hell". I thought it
would not only sound better but give an interesting contrast with the
meaning. I didn't get the impression that anybody agreed with me though :)
Anyways, I would be really interested in hearing it since this line always
bugged me somehow.

Yes!!! Can't agree more! Geoff is absolutely DIVINE! :) Sorry for developing
a non-DT subject here but I have a quick question and since on Screaming In
Digital there are no set lists postings allowed anymore (ARGHHH!!!), I have
to ask if it is true that QR is playing Neue Regel on this tour... it is
essential for me to know since it is my all time fave song. I'm DYING to
hear/see it LIVE!
Thanks for any info,

In the progressive rock/metal regime, the arena is no clearer. There's
Neil, of course. His technical style is well documented and imitated. Yet
there is a musical flavor that is so very uniquely Neil's. He draws the
listener to every subtlety in each roll and fill, and he knows when to
'cut loose' and when to reserve himself (or not overplay, in any case!).
His lyric-writing and composition skills are exemplary.<<<<<<<<<<<
I know exactly what you mean about hearing all of his subtleties. My best
friend and I worship Peart. And there is this drum part that is so subtle
but it is so awesome that every time we hear the song we go crazy over the
part, espically when we heard them live!!! The part is in Animate. It is
right after Geddy sings "My counterpart my foolish heart a man must learn
rule his tender part" then E Neil Hits one of his toms 4 times and
then three bass beats. This part happens very quickly but I think it is
a great example of what you are talking about.
Just my 2 cents.

Yes... to my error... I was thinking of some other thing, that I can't even remember the name of now... The Nyquist is indeed twice the sampling frequency of the highest frequency you are attempting to sample, therefore the 44.1Khz for digital sampling to 20khz maximum frequency response. There is a Yamaha DAT that does sample at 96Khz, effectively having a FR of twice that range, although I don't know how it deals with aliasing.
Aliasing is the sampling of higher or lower harmonics into the digital sample.
The minimum SPL that a human can hear is 0db at 3000hz, the threshold of audibility. And the threshold of pain is 140db.

Yeah, but, I'll make this brief.
I was speaking with one of my former audio instructors about the Myung Bass controversy. He, having not heard the records, seemed to think that my theory was plausable, but, would be the result of either "a bad engineer" or something "that producers do sometimes, for whatever reason."
Further, seeing as this guy is a "purist" - i.e. he hates 6 string basses, 7 String guitars, and is really into producing/recording jazz, said "too much compression squashes your frequency response." This, admittedly is one of compression's shortcomings.
Ah well. More techno-babble later, I suppose.

Since everyone is so keen on posting their dream bands, I figured I would surrender to the peer pressure:
Lead Vocals: Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) Backing Vocals and Acoustic Guitar: Jani Lane (Warrant) Lead Guitar: Eddie Van Halen (hmm....) Rhythm Guitar and Backing vocals: Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme) Keys: Bruce Hornsby (sp?) Bass: Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big) Drums: Tommy Lee (Motley Crue)
Lyrics: Stevie Blaze (Lillian Axe) and John Petrucci
This album put together by these guys would *have* to be produced by either Bob Rock or Michael Wagner.
And while I'm at the computer, I might as well degrade myself even further by participating in the Portnoy/Peart Controversy. While I agree that in the cosmic sense, musicians are of equal value, I can't help but be drawn the Portnoy's style over Peart's. I am not a big fan of Rush to begin with (though I do like some of their songs) and most of the reason is Peart's sound. What he is playing is obviously challenging and well-suited to the song, but his drum sound is lacking of, well, balls. That's probably why until the last Metallica album (which I do not own) I was not praticularly impressed with Lars. Also, although Neil plays for the song, it pretty much stops there. He has his moments of flash but they are so sparce that, in my opinion, they are almost out of place. Maybe that was wrong choice of words. They just take me by surprise in a slightly negative way. However, I will admit that the man is incredible. But Portnoy is another story. He is much more over-the-top and, quite honestly, a lot more fun to listen to then Peart. His playing is as dynamic as a roller-coaster ride and immediately commands attention without detracting from the other member's contributions. Maybe it's because of my hard rock background, but I love flashy drummers. While I have never seen Rush live, the personality conveyed by Neil's playing doesn't seem to lend itself to this type of atmosphere, which is fine. I'm not saying that Portnoy is *better* than Peart, just that I enjoy what he plays more and find myself in awe of Portnoy, contrasted with the mere respect I have for Peart. It's rather like choosing friends: some people you just have better connection with than others. That doesn't mean that one is a better person than the other, however. All right, I'm done. Sorry for the long post but I got carried away.

Hello everyone, first time caller and short time listener but don't fret, I love Dream Theater. The one thing I'd like to discuss would be the lyrics of Dream Theater. They put a lot of effort and time into their music and I feel the same about their lyrics. The lyrics are powerful but can easily be misunderstood. I myself donot fully understand every word and I'm open to any one's interpertation. Let's talk about Space-Dye Vest off of their latest, Awake. It's Kevin's tune and the song is obviously about a relationship once had. During the first break in the song there is dialogue of man explaining how his love is true and anothers is false. What I'm trying to figure out is who is doing the talking? Could it be Kevin in the sense that he is trying to convince this girl that it's his love that is true or is it his nemisis who is trying to convince this girl that Kevin's love is the false. Anyone? Mike : )

Hey there,
It's been a long time since I read my e-mail and an even longer time since I posted so forcive me if this gets long. I have an announcement first of all. My address as a Demo site has changed, anybody in the midwest wanting one should get a hold of me at Rycher@unix.ksu.edu now :-) I'd be happy to copy for anyone. Second of all, I was wondering if anybody online had info on the condition of Jason Becker. For those who don't know, he was this guitar virtuoso (at least in my mind) that at the age of 18 or 19 devolped ALS. He did a lot of work with Marty Friedman back when shred was king. (Yes, I admit, I'm a closet shredder and I'm proud I say, proud ;-)) They had a absloutely flawlesses chemistry in the band Cacophony and there solo efforts were phenominal. He was suppose to release an album produced via computers, old demos, and some playing done by another incredible Shrapnel Shredder Micheal Lee Firkins. I haven't heard about him at all lately and I never got the chance to meet Marty Friedman after the Megadeth show. :-( Oh well... hopefully one of you may know more. By the way, anybody wanting to trade copies of Jason and Marty's work in Cacophony and their solo albums for something like a boot, let me know. Finally, my dream band would be as follows...
Guitars: JP, Marty Friedman, and Jason Becker (back when he could :'( ) Bass: JM Keyboards: KM Drums: MP, Nick Menza Vocals: Geoff Tate
Thanks again, Brian

I too was at the concert held at the Roseland Theater in Portland, OR. I'd have to agree that James' voice was difficult to hear, but none the less I was very impressed. I also had no trouble hearing Derek. I'm one of those people who like a loud show, so maybe that's why I wasn't as dissapointed as you.
I also thought it was really cool at the show when James put on that guys hat.
Oh, I too brought a friend with me who was not too familiar with DT. He is now a huge DT fan who regularly plays DT on his radio show. He was mainly influenced by the show that DT put on.
