Hi...
I still have approxiametly 5 copies of the RISING POWER : POWER TO
THE PEOPLE CD. This is Mike Portnoy's old band before he joined
Majesty/DT. He was 17 when they recorded this album. The music
sounds very good quality-wise..Musically, it is great 80's metal.
power chords and all!
If you are *seriously* interested in purchasing one or more of these
cd's from me, email me at the address below and I will give you a
very special price now for a limited time only till these cd's are
gone!
thanks,
Tim

I noticed the word "Cairo", and had to say something :-)
Wessel Marquering (w.a.marquering@kub.nl) writes:

No, the last song reminds me Tarkus(EL&P) rather than Crimson.
I think the album is fun, but too much Emerson influences :-)
The keyboardist likes Jeff Downes and Emerson a lot, I guess.
> (BTW: it's on the Magna Carta label)
Seems keyboard dominant style is the feature of this label.
Though I like it. The bands belong to this label are Magellan,
Shadow Gallery and Cairo. I'd like to note that Cairo has a drummer
as its official member, some of you know what I mean... :-)
If you guys like more guitar dominant metal album, you should buy
King Crimson/Thrak. It's the greatest progressive heavy metal in
this year as of now(sorry, I'm not sure when it's avilable in world
wide, but it's already available in Japan. I think you may have the
info on "elephant-talk").

I volunteered to take over FAQ duty from Mike Bahr. (He needs time to make
CD's!!!)
I'm looking forward to it quite a bit.
The latest version I have was revised on 11/15/94 - it is available out in
the Dream Theater Archives at:
ftp.netcom.com
/pub/dr/drkhoe/dt/dtfaq.txt
Feel free to e-mail me with any info, issues, etc. you want me to try to
cover in the new revision. I hope to have it out in a week or two.
Also, if I could have a couple of volunteers to proofread - I'd appreciate it.

I have this album too, and I love it! Bret Douglas is a wonderful singer with
a smooth, clear voice, while Alec Fuhrman is what Allan Holdsworth would
sound like if he played with ELP or Genesis (I'm not kidding! Whammy for
days...); Mark Robertson is the finest new keyboard talent around (along with
Citizen Cain's Stuart Bell)--his compositional talent (which has earned him
comparisons with the one and only Keith Emerson) is surpassed only by his
soloing ability; and the rhythm section of Rob Fordyce (bass) and Jeff
Brockman (drums) is solid yet inventive. They've got it all: chops for weeks,
great melodic sense, and a flair for complex arrangements and superb ensemble
playing. Kind of like another band we know...
If you see this album, buy it IMMEDIATELY! It's a wonderful example of
where progressive rock is going in the 90s--bands like Cairo, Echolyn,
Mastermind, Shadow Gallery, Enchant, Magellan, and of course Dream Theater
are taking it to realms never before explored.

Not to restart the "solid"-"sullied" argument, but no matter where you
look, you will find different versions of this line. It is spoken by Hamlet
in his first major soliloquy in contemplation of suicide (Act I.II). To
fully understand this issue, you first have to realize that Shakespeare
NEVER wrote plays for print. As a matter of fact, after his death, his
folios were compiled by "friends" of his for publication. There are many
different folio's and quarto's of most shakespearean plays, and in each
it is easy to find little differences like these. Among many editors notes,
I have seen it explained as, "Quarto 2 contained the word Sallied, which
was later modernized to sullied (soiled or stained). Later in the 1st Folio
it was changed to solid which seems correct because it works better with the
word "melt" and the following line: "Thaw and resolve itself into a dew".
The only rule to Shakespeare is that he is extremely complex. Some of his
stuff is torture to we English majors. However, the next time someone tells
you they have THE answer to anything Shakespearean, punch them for being so arrogant.

Does anyone else remember the Guitar Heroes concert from Expo 92 in Barcelona?
I still have it on video. It was a couple of years ago, but the music was
unforgettable.
Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Brian May, Nuno Bettencourt & Gary Cherone, Joe Walsh, Paul Rodgers, Cozy Powell, Rick Wakeman and others, all jamming on each other's own material, as well as covers of oldies like 'Hey Joe' . . . .
Vai, Satriani and May playing on Vai's instrumental 'Liberty' was a truly
orgasmic aural experience!!
Petrucci would have been in his element . . . he obviously loves the
covers/jamming idea!!
Just feeling a little nostalgic today, I think :)

I don't know... after all of this discussion about the bass on I&W
and Awake, I am sitting here, just listened to a few tracks from Awake
and I&W (TTT on right now) and I have no problem picking up the bass
at all... I do have the eq pretty much balanced... so it isn't being
EQed up to high... Anyway, I think it has alot to do with what you
are listening to the CDs on... I have no problems on my Bose 301s
(which are known for good bass response) or on the Bose speakers in my
car... I think it would almost be difficult to miss the bass on songs
like Scarred or Erotomania from Awake... I do think that they are a
little clearer on Awake than on I&W though...

Since the jam isn't that interesting these days, here's something to
think about:
I was just thinking of the Seinfeld episode where they all had a bet to
see who could last the longest without masturbating.
What if there was a contest to see who could go the longest without
listening to Dream Theater. That would be tough since they are so
addicting, but it would be interesting to see how long someone could last
without them.

Hi everyone,
Kev mailed me the lyrics for the demos "Normal Words" & "Sun Orange, Small,"
so I thought I'd also post them here for everyone's convenience! I typed
them out exactly as he did, BTW. :) Enjoy!
He also said to please thank all of you for your reviews of and comments on
the demos, he really got a kick out of reading them, so thanks again! :) I
will continue to pass your comments about the demos onto him, so feel free to
e-mail them to me if you haven't already.
I'll be posting an updated list of KM demo dub sites tomorrow. Almost all of
them are in place now & I won't be making anymore copies in the future on
requests of Kevin (we both think there are enough copies out there by now ;),
so if you haven't contacted a site for a copy yet but have been planning to,
do so as soon as possible. Thanks again for your kind words & support! :)

(I'm horrible with names, so I forget the title of the first song
on side 2 (second to last song total). It's called Sun Orange or
something. I'm really curious about this song. There were no lyrics
on the sheet, but IMHO, it's the best song! it's those samples I've

I seriously think that Matt's, I mean Mark's! (just kidding)
drumming on IO was heavily influenced my Mike's style. The
song two before Monument (forgive my lapse of memory, I
haven't had the album since November when I loaned it to a
friend just before the DT concert) has an almost identical
double bass beat as UAGM.
As for Idaho, I am seriously thinking of taking a trip up to
Pocatella (sp?) this summer, and if I do, I'll look you up,
maybye we can get some other people together, too. Of course,
this depends on how much vacation time I have saved up by then.
Unless the shows happen to fall on weekends (hopefully), a few
vac. days will go to the (one or more - SFO, Sac?, Reno?) DT
shows and, of course, Queensryche!

Hello, 'jammers!
What is the DEAL w/ Space-Dye Vest? I'll admit theat it is a great song--very
powerful; made me cry w/ the rest of you--but I just read the results of the
poll and I can't believe how high up on the list it was! Please don't
misunderstand me <I'm going to see the flames from hell for this one> but I
just really have a hard time considering it an actual DT song. I know that JP
has said time and time again that they all thought that the song really suited
the band, but it just seems so self-indulgent on Kevin's part. I regret not
having the time <or the computer know-how> to put in my $.02 to the poll,
because then superior compositions like Take The Time, Only A Matter Of Time,
Light Fuse And Get Away, or Under A Glass Moon may have had the couple extra
points that they needed to edge out SDV by a couple notches. I guess I'm just
a sore loser--the loss being Kevin as a member of DT.:(
I LOVE all the "nightmare bands!" Here's mine:
Vocals: Sebastian Bach
Backing Vocals: En Vouge+Boys II Men <tonic triads, anyone?>
Lead Guitar: This guy in my band, Lonnie. Nice guy, though...
Rhythm Guitar: This guy in my old band, Skip. He thought he was good...
Bass: Kip Winger
Keyboards: David Bryan
Drums: Bill Berry <is that his name? the guy from REM?>
I know that this is probably someone's dream band, but these people just really
get on my nerves!
See Ya
Steve Z
PS-- if anyone gets the new set list for DT, PLEASE only post it if you head it
up w/ a spoiler cuz I'm sure some of us don't want to know till we see them
again. thanks in advance!
PPS-- Kinga: Neue Regel <and all of Rage...> RULES! I especially like LONDON!

is it just me or does BABS's recommendation of reserving 25 rooms at a
marriot seem a bit much? i was thinking it woudl be at someone's house or
something, not a hotel room. we need places where we can check out tapes,
jam with other musicians, get drunk, etc. i would think it would be better,a
lot more fun, and cheaper, to have everyone crash at one or two houses
in the area. i would certainly volunteer my place for a texas gathering.
i still think all of this should wait until we find out the north american
touring schedule of dt. the regional meetings all happening at the same
time sound good, but i think it would be better to have everyone meet at
a show, maybe we could persuade them to play ACOS or something :)
anyway, i was actually considering driving up to new york or wherver
(all 30 hours one way of it!) but i can't if it is in june, i have classes
all day every day during the summer. only free time for me is the two
weeks at the end of may and beginning of june.
oh well..

I have a question about the dream theater logo. What does it mean? A
friend of mine said it looks like the symbol for a music fraternity.
(Phi Mu Alpha) Could there be a connection?

Hi, one final comment about the DT show in Stockholm (20/2-95). I played
a gig myself the same night so therefore I had my bass with me to the
DT-show and we sat around afterwards and hoped for the band to come out
like they use to. Unfortunately they didn't (we waited for more than an
hour I think) probably due to the fact that they were not that pleased
with the show, they had some technical problems as previously reported.
But what a great opportunity for having John Myung showing me how to play
for instance the tapping thing in Metropolis or the Ytsejam solo, I had my
bass right with me and were just waiting for him to come out...and he
didn't :-( Fonk Dat!

AMEN BROTHER!!!!!!!! I WILL verify this point...I went to a gig once, and
hung with the sound engineer the whole day (he used to mix for the likes
of Tears for Fears)...and the entire show he was asking me how it
soudned...and let me take care of the EQ and crap for him...the poor
guy...but it DID sound good (as Eric bows). Later!

According to the circle of fifths, and the pattern of sharps and flats:
If the alphabet continued as notes progressed (Using Major Key Sig's) (i.e
A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, etc.) eventually the key of Z Major
would have 4 sharps.
