Hello, it's BABS. Here is another update:

I called the Smithtown, Long Island Sheraton. Here's what they can offer
us: they can reserve a block of 25 rooms. The room rate is $89 for single
or double occupancy (It can only be at that rate if reserved by May 20, by
credit cards). I could arrange for a dinner that starts at $18.50. I
checked they have a pool, jacuzzis, etc. and they can arrange for us to
have a party room, but the catch to the party room is a charge. Here is
what's in it's favor: it's right off of the Long Island Expressway and
has free shuttle service for anyone who fly into McArthur aiport. This is
just another option for us to explore. I will be receiving material from
both the Sheraton and the Marriott to read and I will try to go from there
and set up a whole list of pros and cons. I need for people who live on
Long Island to write back and let me know how this sounds. Also, I need
someone from down there (LI) to let me know a little bit more about geography
of the area. I want for it to be easy for everyone to get to. Also, I
want it to be easy for some of the DT guys to get to as well. Jeff/HuntNKill
asked me if there were going to be any commerative materials for this (i.e.
posters that say regional convention, t-shirts, etc.) Does anybody have
any ideas on where to start with this? Well I gotta go, time for some
Excedrin and and icebag (ha ha). -BABS

Sigh, I'm sorry but I cannot tell you. The latest news on his
condition (and where I found out about it) was from a Guitar Fro the
Practicing Musician magazine that had a letter (a nice long one,
almost made me cry) to his fans. I don't know the month of the

thank you Poul Holloway and AirDance for the poll-result.
Really liked it. But it is somehow strange that the lowest score were 5.2 ,
but of course it is hard to give a DT-song low scores.
I saw that only 2.1 % liked EVE the most, and that should be round 5 people
I think. I know that I am one of those. Who are the others. It would be
    nice to know !
overall I must say that the mainstream-DT-fan has the same favourite songs
    as I have. That's nice.

    That should do it.

I would like to thank everyone here who has reccomended Kansas as
a great band to listen to. I bought "The Best of Kansas" (since I
didn't know which one was the best anyway) and I've fallen in love
with it after the first listen. Funny, too. My friend was a closet
Kansas freak. I played it for him and he was singing along with it.
He though I'd make fun of him for it. (Much the same way he makes
fun of me for liking Journey, Toto, Bon Jovi (flame me and die!),
Asia, and others (he likes Europe, though!))

Hello everyone, it's BABS. I just got off the phone with Dream Theater's
management. Explained everything, and mentioned the Uniondale Marriott.
Management is very interested in this and they don't see it as a problem.
They think that the guys would already be in the area doing promo stuff.
I am overwhelmed with this - I feel like I could do a cartwheel. CAN YOU
BELIEVE THIS? One thing though - management would like to keep this as
just a get-together/socialize type of thing. Cameras are welcome, but no
jammin'. I feel elated, I feel stressed and nauseous - almost like being
in love (ha ha). Somebody slap me! I will be floating on a cloud for a day
or two so bear with me. I will keep you posted. -BABS

Hello to all Dream Thespians on this list! As customary, I must now announce that this is my first post. "This is my first post, I've been lurking around for quite some time now..." Okay, now that that's out of the way...

The Awake Cover. This may be a bit lengthy, but please hear me out. On top of the symbols themselves, I may also include a bit of insight into the lyrics to help out with matching the pictures to the songs. I did all this the first week I had the album, and I can't say my opinions have changed much. Enjoy! (and please remember that this is just one opinion. It is not necessarily correct!)

6:00 - the moon with the clock reading 6:00. Caught In A Web - the spider in the web by the mirror, though that spider could also be from Voices. I also thought that "caught in a web" could be another way to describe the factory in the corner, describing man being caught in his web of technology, "spinning the lies devised in (his) head." I mean, CIAW seems to be describing a no-way-out situation, and that situation could easily be represented by the factory spewing out pollution. (but somehow CIAW seems to be written from one person's point of view, not to represent a group, such as mankind) Anyone? Innocence Faded - written about Kevin Moore by John Petrucci. I don't think it is represented on the cover, although one explanation could be the statue of the old man (who I will describe later) looking into the mirror and seeing a youthful man, one whose outlines are fading. He's growing older and looking back on innocence he once had. Erotomania - this song is made up of other songs. It's an amalgam, just like the COVER! So in my opinion it is not represented by a single picture on the cover itself, but sort of MIRRORS the cover. Voices - this could be many, many things. The only direct one from the lyrics is the spider beside the mirror. The song seems to be about having one's identity picked apart and analyzed. "Others steal your thoughts," "swear my skin is inside out," "See my diary on the newsstand," so it reminded me of the viewpoint of someone in an asylum or similar place. Maybe Petrucci wrote it sympathetic to those stricken with mental retardation. The face look out of the mirror reminded me of this, being someone almost looking for help, trapped in a mirror where everything is reflected clearly whether we want it to or not. He's alone and frustrated, or should I say, "Withdrawn and introverted..." Make any sense??? The Silent Man - those of you familiar with the story of Oedipus will understand this better. That statue on the cover is, I'm 90% sure, Oedipus. It's striking the exact same pose he is pictured in, standing with his staff, speaking to the Sphinx. He answered the riddle, which we all should know by now, and freed the city from the ravages of the Sphinx. "When there is reason, tonight I'm awake. When there's no answer, arrive The Silent Man." Oedipus answered the riddle, granting reason upon arrival. ALSO: "Has man been a victim of his woman, of his father." Oedipus was fated since birth to marry his mother and kill his father. A victim of fate! "If he elects not to bother, will he suffocate their faith?" If Oedipus chooses not to be a "victim," and accept his fate without running, he will not meet up with the Sphinx, save the city. etc. THUS suffocating, or destroying, the faith of the city that a "savior" will come and save them from the Sphinx. This whole analysis reminds me of Pull Me Under and Hamlet...hmmm...that is to say, DT writing a story based on Oedipus wouldn't be all that far-fetched. The Mirror/Lie - obviously, the mirror on the cover. But this could also relate to the landscape being in full color in the mirror itself, things being seen more clearly when reflected, which would correlate to the lyrics of the song. "Reflections of reality are slowly coming into view." Lie could be also the face glaring back at us from inside the mirror. In relation to The Mirror, however, this face would be US looking at ourselves and promising not to deceive ourselves ever again. Anyway, I think both of those songs are imaged on the cover in the mirror itself as well as the face in the mirror. Scarred - more help!/reaching out lyrics, which seems to be a major theme of this album. (Speaking of major themes, it is possible that the symbols on the cover represent multiple songs, since the songs themselves do have similar themes at times. There are running ideas throughout the album, so some of the album cover pictures could mean more than one thing. Make sense? Anyone?) Okay, Scarred: my only guess is the factory scarring the landscape, even though deserts, which is the cover landscape, are considered SCARS upon the earth because of their bleakness and limited capability to maintain animal or plant life. Space-Dye Vest - the starry sky pictured in the higher half of the cover. "Beauty projection in the reflection always the worst way to start," I took this to mean that someone looks at themselves in a mirror and says, "You're beautiful. You can live without them. You don't need them," since the song is obviously about a loved one that HURT someone and is no longer with them. That line could mean that the road to recovery does not begin by telling yourself you're better than the other person. I also thought that the "space" images on the cover could mean that love is vast and inunderstandable. (???) "I saw the future dressed as a stranger," means that the person doesn't know where they are going to go next, "Love in a space-dye vest," could mean that, as said before, love is a mystery and when someone truly loves another, that love cannot be defined or analyzed, it is ambiguous, much like the contents of the endless universe pictured on the album cover.

Sorry about the length, but I just had to give my .02 (more like .08) to this particular topic. Does any of this make any sense to anyone??? I thank you all for your patience and time. BYE!

A quick note on the SUBCONSCIOUS CDs....

Unlike my CD burner, the glass master burner at the factory was multisession-capable, so I threw Tears and Winter onto the CD! The total time now is 73:42, so you're all definitely getting your moneys worth. They are "bonus tracks" really.. quality isn't as hot as I'd wished, but they're there.

22 days and counting till the expected delivery fo the blanks...

My dream band is RUSH. But I wondered what sort of hybrid might make the best hybrid album, sorta like Temple of the Dog or Contraband. Those two were kinda weak, so I got this weird arrangement:

Vocals - Ed Kowalczyk (Lyrics) - Neil, Ed, and Kev Bass - Geddy Lee Lead Guitar - John Petrucci Keys - Kevin Moore Rhythm guitar - Dane Sonnier Occasional backing vocals - Tori Amos Drums - Neil Peart Orchestration - Michael Kamen (I agree with the other jammer on this one)

I think a hybrid like this could have the intensity of emotion of Live, the technical excellence of Rush, the versatility and musical tonality of Dream Theater, a touch of Galactic Cowboys gristle, the occasional Tori touch, and a big, full, orchestrated sound. Whaddya think?

Hello again! It just occured to me that I left a song off that list!

Lifting Shadows Off A Dream - firstly, this reminded me of a John Myung version of Surrounded. Anyone? As for the cover, the only corresponding image is, (yet again) the face in the mirror. "He seems alone and silent, thoughts remain without an answer, afraid and uninvited he slowly drifts away." The face is alone and silent, and the edges of the face itself could be thought of as "drifting away," being faded and almost blurred. I think a few fellow jammers suggested the mirror, which contains a landscape of full color, as being the theme of lifting "shadows" (from the black and white landscape) off a dream. My only difficulty with that is that even the full-color sand dunes have shadows, and at one point you can see the orange sand turn to blackness - a large shadow on the horizon, so the shadows remain even in color...

Thanks again for putting up with this loooong analysis.

But maybe they're >lying to me. Trevor Rabin is a great musician but I can't comment on his personal attitude. I have always been a fan of YES but was never really impressed with Steve Howe (please, no flames, it's my opinion). While Steve had a good talent for acoustic guitar, his electric style was sloppy (missed notes, screechy tone etc.). I will give him credit for some superb stuff here and there (Starship Trooper for one). When Rabin joined YES for 90125, I thought they had finally gone over the top. The only more enjoyable line-up might be with Wakeman instead of Kaye and Bruford instead of White. I saw YES recently on their tour for TALK and Rabin was equally impressive on guitar, keyboards and vocals. He plays their older material much better than Steve could ever hope to do. By the way, he played all the keys on TALK except for the Hammond organ played by Kaye and also produced the whole effort. Yes has really become more his band than Jon Anderson's and I think that's great. Paul

With all of this talk about the images on the "Awake" cover symbolizing a song on the album, I reviewed my "Images and Word" cover and I noticed that it too has images on it that symbolize songs on the album. What I am wonder is, are all the songs off of I&W on the cover? If so, how are they symbolized?

So far, I have seen the obvious symbols, like "the sparrow falling", the moon in the background, and others. Are there any other yjammers out there who have noticed the same and can offer any other ideas?

BTW, on the "Awake" cover, does the guy in the mirror have a scar on his forehead, or is that just some sort of wrinkle?

    Hey...

Speaking of Mark Zonder, the ending of Point Of View is some of the most uninhibited drumming ever put to tape! It rulez! He's really a great drummer. Just to throw another monkeywrench into the machinery of this drum debate; how about all of us Satch fans raving about Gregg Bissonnette.<sp?> He's really technical, but at the same time is still a ROCK drummer. Very talented and yet underrated. Not to mention Jonathan Mover. He's more of a "drummer's drummer" than Gregg, but I still think he's great. I must add that I know nothing about the drums,--I'm a singer--but these guys are really good as far as I can tell. The fact is I don't know how ANY drummers do it!

And now a joke from an old GftPM mag:

"How many vocalists does it take to change a light bulb?"

That's my idea, sort of. I'm takin' my Washburn with me to the concert in SLC. I'm definitely gonna wait for them, I don't care how long it takes. It's not just Myung showing me how it's done (I know he'd kick my ass any day), but I wanna see if I can get it signed by 'em all! At least by JM. That would rock! (The only thing is, I don't want my nifty paint job marred if they smudge. I guess I'll lacquer over it when it's all over!)

I've already gone without DT for 2 days now, by choice, not contest. :) I've been too busy listening to my new stuff I haven't had time to. I'll break down in a few hours though, I bet. I still have Voices in my head (no pun intended :P ).

    Hey everyone!

I am reading all of this about a YTSEJAM CONVENTION...and I am thinking, what about the MIDWEST? (ie Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, etc.) Are there people out there interested? I would be interested in collaborating w/ other YJ members to put one together for us midwesterners.

---->I think that it *would* be a wise idea to wait until the US tour schedule comes out before making dates and things. It would really be great to have a convention including a show, and then (hopefully...) maybe an appearance by misc. band members...I am sure if the word got to them... Well, anyway...

    Let me know.

    Erik

    P.S. I can't help it

WORST BAND: Vocals/Guitar: Kurt Cobain Bass: Whatever that tall freak is (Nice catch!) Drums: Dave Grohl oops...THAT'S NIRVANA! (it's all the same anyway)

    SCARRED!

Oh yes! They won't play it, WE WILL!!!!

Learn it now, boys and girls!

Satch's music is rather guitar oriented, to the extreme. The rest of the stuff (like his voice - YUCK!) should not take away, from that. Satch has various people doing drums and percussion for him, some of it just drum programming :( I went up and listened to some specifiacally to find some parts that would make everyone stop in awe, and I realized that, yeah, you're right, the drum beats aren't all that exciting. I am not saying that these guys aren't good, it's just that they aren't real showy drummers. Jonathan Mover does have a solo on _Time Machine_'s live disc, and it isn't bad, not Neil or Mike, but it isn't bad.
