Just a quick note for any European 'jammer who is going to see a show
soon... Make sure to print out a copy of the poll and pass it along
to the guys if you see them after the show... Especially Mike...
(hey... maybe they'll add LTL to the set list by the time they make
it back on their 2nd tour... :)

I started looking for this CD the week after it was released and was able
to get my hands on a promotional copy that my local music store sold me
since they were out of them. I do have to say that it is an EXCELLENT CD
and a must for ANY drummer whether you like Big Band music or not. It'll
absolutely blow you away. The idea of putting drummers from all genres
of music into Buddy's shoes is phenominal. Check it out.

Ok, if more than one person didn't get the DT Poll results included in
YtseJam730, then something is definately wrong here. Airdance (Jen) so
kindly posted the results a 2nd time for me because I thought the problem
was at my end, but now I'm starting to think that it may not have.

Zonder is also my fave drummer and I`ll actually get to see him play on the

what amazes me is that he can have such power when he plays orthodox (left

Yo!
As I tried to express already I must also underline that I find it
absolutely wrong place here to discuss what band everybody likes and
what not. Causes really big traffic - but not any information that this
list should really lead to. Man, I'm here to discuss and to hear
interesting things bout DT that are not covered by any magazine and not
to pay big amounts for my mail traffic and waste my time by flying over
millions of messagelines about who likes which singer and so on. Better
we have few traffic....if there are no new things to discuss. Ytsejam
gets very uninteresting with all these disucssions because many people
(at least me) tend to ignore the few intersting things which are hidden
between all these "i like that band...think of that bad basser!"-mails!

Hi everyone it's Rick-
I've only posted on the digest once before (pertaining to a DT lick) and
received great response from fellow guitar players. There seem to be a
lot of experienced six-string virtuosos floating around on the net. I've
even read several letters by persons claiming to have the ability to play
such songs as Erotomania and other DT masterpieces. I have a few things
to say about these, and I am in no way being critical or skeptical, I'm
just curious:
1>-Why would someone of this musical ability not already be in a
band? Good musicians are in demand; anyone who can truely play at this
level should not be looking for buddies to jam with on an internet mailing
list. They should have an add in the paper as well as a demo tape, which
leads me to number...
2>-If these are true claims, I would LOVE to have a recording of
these persons playing their instruments! I am a guitar player myself and
would be excited to hear other players who have established a solid level
of playing ability. I would gladly pay postage and a buck or two in
return for a home recording of a DT guitar track, as well as a commentary
on how this person developed their ability (warm up drills, practice
routine, etc...). I am not ashamed to admit that there are many, many
John Pettrucci (sp?) licks that I cannot do, including the string skipping
part in Erotomania, the UAGM solo (excellent tune), and just about
everything else he does. If someone could give me guidence, I would more
than appreciate it. I've got the speed, but no direction.
If anyone is interested in giving me a mail-order lesson on how to
play a few DT tunes (UAGM, Lie, AFIL in particular), E-mail me at
rhenley@gac.edu and we'll work something out.
One more thing...
Here's my own nightmare band:
Vocals - Jabba the Hut
Guitars - Jimmy Buffet and Dwight Yokum (sp)
Bass - That kid in the guitar store who is always playing Nirvana
Drums - Garth
"Everyday I turn little cogs that turn bigger cogs. And for every hour I
do this, I receive a penny, half of which goes to pay the big screen that
tells me I am very happy indeed..."

Hi
This message is for Rob Chinneck, Liverpool !
The man that recorded Dream Theater's COVERgig in London some time ago.
I would really want a tape or two of that.
Accidently I must have erased your E-mail address, and I really want to get
in contact with you. I think I can get some GBP now and I wonder if I
should send them to your *REAL*address, that one I've got. Still it would
be nice to hear from you first, just to make me more sure that you really
are out there.
So please Email me as soon as possible.
BTW if someone else reads this, and have Rob's E-mail, feel free to send it
to me.
================
AND to the persons that keep starting those *nonsense* question like:
who's the oldest YJ
Dream band
How long you can live without DT
-Please stop. I find them at NO interest, and so do a lot of others, I believe.
There are too much of this. some question once in a while is nice, but not
half of the YtseJam-mails.
==============
AND to all of you little private-eye's out there. I doubt that Dream
Theater really is trying to put a little bit of every song in the picture.
I do enjoy reading your explanations, though. It's great to hear another
persons opinion on the songs, they aren't that easy to figure out after
all. Earlier, that is some years ago, there were a lot of these sort of
"what the songs where about"-talk on YtseJam. I liked that, sort of miss it
now.
Hopefully no one got offended.

Hi there everyone, I've just recently joined the YTSEJAM mailing list
and have read a couple of batches of posts before I decided to post
anything here.
- Jason Becker. Much as I love Petrucci's playing and style, Becker
and Friedman will probably always be my 'gods'. Even though Friedman
has had to tone his solo's down a bit due to Mustaine's selling out,
he still displays an ability to play anything with almost utter
perfection (listening to him live is like listening to the album)
As far as Becker, I thought I heard rumors that he might have another
solo album out (tribute?)
- On the subject of Bootlegs, I hope it's not a forbidden topic
because I haven't heard it spoken of much on here, but here
goes. Anyone have a good source for DT boots? One place I know
of (other than the very rare one popping up at my local album stores)
is http://cdnow.com. They have a few up there, including the only
one I have so far (Dream Out Loud). I've read the bootleg list and
I see that I've got quite a ways to go!
- The Death Gate cycle is a very good series...I have to get the
sixth and seventh book and finish it. For those of you w/ CD roms
and a fast computer, you should check out the CD game version of
the series, I have that too and it's pretty cool.
Enough for now, no need to fill up one digest by myself :)

Let me respond and ask a question:
Are Prog metal and Prog rock mutually exclusive in terms of billing for
something like this? I happen to like both and would rather go to an event
like this that included some of each. How do you all feel about a combination
event? I've noted in the past that some jammers don't care for Prog rock just
metal while others (most I think) listen to both.
I got your info offline on how to reach the company that sponsors ProgFest and
I think it's worth pursuing.

Great idea! I think the crossover pull of QR and Rush could pull in a number
of people who've never heard DT and other progressive music. If the promoter
sees big ticket sales it might interest them.

Message-ID: <Pine.3.89.9503051627.A3241-0100000@elwha.evergreen.edu>
To Zack Gemmill - Keep in mind that all of what I said was off the top of
my head, from when I first got the album. I never even thought to
investigate "who" that statue was, the reason being that the gold mirror
on the cover looked suspiciously computer-generated, so I wasn't about to
assume that the statue was as real as it looked! True, the statue could be
a real one, it could be Michelangelo's "Moses." It's good to see that
someone has actually identified one of the symbols on the cover! (as in,
"that mirror was used by Joan of Arc," or something) Now, we must open our
Bibles to the story of Moses, hee hee, more literature for Dream Theater
analysis!!! Yessss, I can feel the insanity setting in...
Anyway, "The Silent Man" is another song I am basically "clueless" on when
it comes to its meaning. I was able to explain a few of the lines for a
partial understanding, but the song as a whole is beyond me! Something
tells me even if Petrucci were to say what it was about, his answer would
be another lyrical riddle to figure out! He's probably laughing at us
right now! "Clueless! You're both utterly clueless!! Hahahahahaaaa!!" So
maybe if we figure out what the song means first, we could relate it to
one of the symbols on the album cover.
Seriously though, even without the statue, the song would still remind me
of Oedipus. And vice versa, even without the song, the statue would
probably still look exactly the same, exactly like whoever it is supposed
to symbolize(Moses?). I guess what that all means is that "The Silent Man"
may not correlate with the statue at all! (more laughter from Petrucci)
But still, based on the angles of the statue and the mirror, the man is
definitely looking INTO the mirror. So now we have to figure out who the
statue is and why he's looking into a mirror...anyone? (not to mention
the 241 other questions there are to answer about DT symbols and lyrics!)
A while back someone asked who the best female vocalist would be to match
James LaBrie in a "Suite Sister Mary" type of duet. Only one comes to mind
(similar sound and range): Ann Wilson of Heart.
As for a Dream Band: Sammy Hagar (vocals), Blues Saraceno & Nuno
Bettencourt (twin-attack rhythm & lead guitars), Billy Sheehan (bass),
Mike Portnoy (drums). Now this might not be the best possible five-person
band that could ever exist, but I REALLY think that those five would work
well together, being five extremely rhythmic musicians!

too fun. Aside from some nightmare bands that have actually existed -
like Nirvana, Tesla and the Smithereens - here is my lineup.
Vocals: Kurt Cobain
Acoustic Guitar: Willie Nelson (ever heard him try to play?)
Guitar: The chick from the Breeders (not the lead singer, the other one)
Bass: Michael Anthony
Drums: Anyone who has ever played for AC/DC, and/or dude from U2.

ATTENTION BRIAN COX!!!! Could you please send me your e-mail address?
I wanna trade with you but most of my mail box got wiped out.
I've seen the band Echolyn mentioned on here a few times so I just thought
I'd talk about them for a few lines. I first heard them on a sampler
tape (thanks Mike) which contianed one song called As The World. This song
is great. I would kinda describe the band as if Dream Theater, after
Images and Words, had gonna in the opposite direction of Awake. Its a
lighter, more jazzy type of sound. The band has great guitar work and
excellent keyboard work. And one thing they have on DT is vocal harmonies,
not just one guy but usually 2 or 3 others and they even can pull this off
live (or so I'm told). The harmonies are on par with Extreme and the
Cowboys (the Galatic ones, not the Dallas ones :) ). The singer is also
good and I would describe his voice as sounding kinda like Joe Jackson.
You can tell that the drummer (who is awesome) definatly has more of
a jazz background, for those of you (like me) who enjoy that style of
druming. I think they have 2 or 3 old albums which are very hard to get.
They were signed by Sony and there new album , As The World, is coming
out this Tuesday, March 7th. I would recommend checking it out if you
can. If you do any trading with me, I'd be happy to give you a copy of
some of their stuff. Oh, for a sample of their lyrics, check out my
new sig.

I really in no way want to offend anyone, but IMHO:

Joe? I don't know that his stuff is really prog metal, but then again
that's just a label anyways...

Now this might be cool. What kind of screaming? Would it be progressive
screaming? :)

Yeah, maybe those songs are kinda cheese, but they were kinda meant to
be. John and Roger have done good songwriting, look at [SOME GOOD SONGS]
of course, this is only IMHO.
OK, OK, I just looked, and you probably have somewhat of a point. Roger's
lyrics are really really repetative, and he is repetative. John has done
some decent lyrical work, but nothing good enough for me to remember right
now. I will disagree on them writing bad music, very very little Queen has
even close to bad music.
BTW- One thing I noticed, Steve Howe played on _Innuendo_!

Well, I think that this is a cool thread, and in fact I like most of the
threads. It may not be the easiest thing to skip over, but what do you
want, only one digest a day? ;)
I am probably wrong, but it seems to me that there is a quite finite
number of things that you can talk about about a single band. IMHO, most
threads are cool, adding spice to our discussions.
