You are right!
I just gave 2 2's and quite a bunch of 8's, 9's and 10's.
No DT song can be rated as low as '0' or '1' (my opinion).

Unlikely. Actually, from the results you can guess how many people
answered the extra questions. For the favorite live song it must me a
multiple of 96 (my guess : 96) (unless anybody split her/his vote;
then a multiple of 48 could be true as well). That's a multiple of 2
for EVE.
To question #2 (musicians) you can easily calculte that 41 people (or
a multiple of 41) replied to this question.
(The probability that it actually were 41 people is more than 90%.)

C'mon folks, the whole idea of Progfest was for more independent bands to
get to play, and for many diehard prog fans to get together. DT has
major label support and good crowds. But it would be nice to have a
festival of bands like DT, Rush etc. where they each get to play full
sets. What about 'progstock'?

Aww... hell, I *swore* to myself I would just let 'em go, but WTF- here I
go. :) *Tesla* a _nightmare_ band?!? No f*&kin' way dude! I really can't
understand how you can lump Tesla in with bands like Nirvana and the
Smithereens. Tesla, IMHO, stradles the fence between progressive and
straight metal very, very well (I suppose that for someone who doesn't
have broad enough tastes to listen to straight metal, I would
understand them not liking Tesla, but as I have seen many, many
posts from 'straight metal' fans out there I have to take this poster as
an exception). Want proof of their progressiveness? Try 'Changes' and
'Before My Eyes' off of _Mechanical Resonance_. There are not all that
many bands out there that can pull off metal, hard rock, blues,
classical, folk, jazz and rockabily (well) in a single album (and they've
got 5 boys n' girls). Want guitar that can *burn*? Both Frank Hannon and
Tommy Skeoch can fly... what makes them unique in the rock world is that
they know when to turn off the burn, and turn on the taste. Anyway, I am
almost positive that this has fallen on deaf ears, as most people out
there seem pretty set in their ruts/opinions regarding music, but if you
have read this far might I suggest that you give them a listen (or a
re-listen), admittedly some of their stuff is straight-ahead rock (very
good straight-ahead rock, mind you), but some of their stuff will simply
blow you away. Nirvana, Smithereens and Tesla lumped together... no way
James... not even in the same *universe*.

P.S. *hell yes* I love Kiss, Iron Maden, Ratt, Great White, AC/DC, Bon
Jovi, Motley Crue, Gn'R, Warrant, Def Leppard, WInger, Twisted Sister, Ozzy,
Quiet Riot, Van Halen, et al... these (plus many, many more that I
didn't mention) were what I *grew up* on. In my younger days the first
Safeway I graffitied was done to 'Detroit Rock City by' Kiss (OK, so I
was a punk way back when... don't worry, I grew up!) :) The first
concert I ever went to was AC/DC... these bands are my roots and I will
defend them till the day I die. C'mon people... I *can't* be the only
one! :)

If anyone else decides to go out and dive into old Kansas....DON'T
get "The Best of Kansas" CD. It's awful because it includes those crappy
early 80's songs sung by John Elefante, their replacement for Steve Walsh.
"Fight Fire w/Fire", "Play the Game Tonight", and "Perfect Lover" are some
of the worst stuff the group has put out. (2 of them don't even have
Violin!...a Kansas trademark)
What should you get? The Kansas Box Set, which includes all the
best stuff from 1974 to 1980 with live goodies and the demo song that got
them signed. You'll not be disappointed. (Although the reviewer in
Rolling Stone gave it a bashing....god I hate that mag)

I just wanted to thank Mike Burstin publicly for the marvelous bootlegs
DoE, LitS and the Toronto 94 show. This guy is fantastic!!! The
recordings are superb and I am well pleased. I remember reading about
some of you who were upset in your dealings with others that you hadn't
got were no labels, etc. Well, Mike sent me the tapes, cases, and added
computer-generated labels detailing songs and their durations!!!!!
Mike Burstin is more than legit - he's quite generous!!! I'm listening
to Mission Impossible right now (from LitS) as this is typed.....

Hey Rick, and anyone else who's wondering about the same stuff that Rick
is wondering about:
DISCLAIMER: I don't mean to be condescending. I seem that way to most
of my friends. For the most part, they are of the alterna-wanker breed,
and when I talk about music in general or about "Bands Who Deserve To
Rule The World" like DT, they accuse me of being a pompous, asshole. I
don't mean to be condescending, but here follows my thoughts, as I know
them.
Why are such six-string virtuosos denied the privilege to play in a band?
Well, here are some of my personal observations:
1. I've read the musician's classifieds for a while. I just gave up.
There are nothing but alterna-schlock wankers who have goatees and wear
socks on their heads. They're not interested in virtuosos. I'm not
saying that I'm a virtuoso (Many a Petrucci lick has befuddled me,
leaving me witha guitar around my neck, my toes on the rewind and play
buttons and a really confused look on my face). I do enjoy playing fast
and all that crap, however, and I've achieved a small degree of success.
Listening to DT is very humbling. However, I was kicked out of a band
once because they heard me play something in the vein of Van Halen/Randy
Rhoads. It's probably because I haven't been looking hard enough, but I
havent' found anyone I'd like to play in a band with. And besides, I
don't believe it should be that hard to find your niche.
2. There are many virtuosos. That also means that there are at least ten
dog-pawed axe slingers out there for every one Petrucci or Steve Howe.
And there are at least 10 guitar players for every one singer and the
ratio gets even worse for bass players, keyborads and drums - especially
drums. And of course, for each of those, the 1 guy who you can work with
is among at least 10 shmucks. It's hard enough to find musicians you get
along with and it's even harder to find musicians you can play with.
3. My guitar playing leaves much to be desired, yet there is much about
it that is desirable. However, in my 2.5+ years at a large university,
(and there _ARE_ a lot of guitar players in college) I've met a grand
total of THREE who I would say have a technique that is better developed
than mine. And there is a fuckload more than THREE other guitarists that
are the ham-handed, Lolla-pa-looser jerk offs.
4. Most people are under the assumption that if you play a musical
instrument related to rock, then you should be in a band. That is NOT
the case.
5. There would really be no fuss if I or any other musicians who are
"unemployed" did not have a sense of artistic integrity. I could find
work in a second if I were to grow a goatee and wear a sock on my head.
I'm sorry, but that's not my schtick. I will stick to playing the music
I love, and if that means not being in a band because of it, then so be
it.

BTW, It seems that DT is playing their live shows backwards. They used
to open with "Metropolis" and close with PMU. And at least for the
11/7/94 show in Baltimore, it was PMU to open and Metropolis for the
encore.

I just surfed around and found the lyrics for Images&Words. On Learning to
Live it said that John Myung did the lyrics, is that true?
I thought Lifting shadows was his first lyrical work, perhaps I was wrong.
The learning to live-text I really like ( more than LSoaD ) and thought it
was made by Moore/Petrucci.

I read through a CD-magazine this morning and found a King Crimson album,
Three of a perfect pair. Is that a good one ? I've never heard anything
about them, but people have said that they are close to Anekdoten and
A:ngla ga'rd, and those Swedish bands I love.
Is White Cross a prog-band ? I think someone mentioned that, but I can be
totally wrong. The CD is real cheap.

Hi!
I have seen DT live in Wels/Austria/Europe on Sat. The show was one of the hottest
(speaking of temperature) I have ever seen; it was sold out (ok, this was a very small
venue - 800). The band was REALLY great, but it is rather hard to enjoy the music
when you get compressed to almost half your normal volume by boiling sweat-dripping
bodies. I have seen them twice on the I&W tour, and the circumstances were a LOT better,
although these two concerts were sold out, too. I think they must have put 1200 people
into this 800 hall.
They DID play Surrounded. But no Damage Inc., no Perfect Strangers, only one encore
(Metropolis).
So people, esp. in Austria and South Germany, if you can, try to avoid buying tickets
for this venue ("Alter Schlachthof" in Wels). Try to get tickets for Munich, esp.
Terminal 1 (I have seen Queensryche there yesterday - absolutely amazing performance!!)
Everytime I have been in Terminal 1, the sound has been perfect.

I'd really like to talk a lot more about what the songs are about. I'm currently reading Hamlet again so I'm looking for those PMU references. Actually, I sort of see a bit of a Hamlet-esque theme in Light Fuse and Get Away. Which brings to mind - I'd like to talk about the songs on WDADU especially (mostly because I love the Bass Sound!) becuase they aren't talked about much.
I like the thread a lot the way it is. I look at it as information, but entertainment as well. I could even get into that drummer war a little bit. But I would like to talk philosophically about the songs.

Boy, am I pumped!! My band played its first ever "major" live show, at an outdoor amphitheater-type of place. It wasn't really huge, just sort of like a Civic Square, but we got an audience, and they liked it! (mostly, I would guess, because we played all cover tunes).
Saturday, 3/4/95 started it all.. remember that for when I hit the big time, if ever. :)
Here was our set... remember now we can't play much prog metal as we're all really just rookies. Yohann, our lead guitarist, and I have been playing for five years, but we *still* can't do much DT. Bearing that in mind, I'd like to know what people here think of our set. It would of course change every night...
I Don't Believe in Love More Than a Feeling (lotta older people grooving to this Boston tune) I Alone (huge reaction) Sex Type Thing Temples of Syrinx Lightning Crashes (the girls went frekin' nuts when we played this) Symphony of Destruction (hows that for an awkward transition) Pull Me Under (sort of a so/so reaction) Far Behind (another huge reaction) Self Esteem (rowdy, very) Enter Sandman
All in all, it wasn't bad for a 10-song set. The show ran nearly an hour, which was good timing, it didn't drag. Would _you_ have enjoyed such a set? You can sort of tell that the songs I specifically wanted to do were Temples, Pull, I Alone, and LC... the rest of the band decided on the others.
Those of you in the Phoenix area, we played this at America West Square on Mill Avenue, we just plopped down our instruments in the middle of the busy saturday night at Mill routine, and played. We will likely be found in bars for the most part... watch for us! :)

Oh my God which Steve Howe are you talking about! Rabin is great but to say that Steve is anything but a MASTER who hits every note exactly, perfectlly, and with unmatched experession is to say...Metropolis is just a bunch of noise.
I can accept an opinion of preferance but to say something as ABSURD as this cannot go unnoticed. The author is a FOOL!
