Prog Fest

I would just like to say that I don't think Dream Theater should headline
the ProgFest show in LA or the ProgScape show in Baltimore. These shows
are a good way for small bands, many on independant labels or small
labels to get some exposure in a fairly well publicized concert.
Though I would love to see a different show become an annual affair with
a bigger Prog Metal band or good mainstream band with three or four other
bands. Something like Dream Theater headlining for Magellan, King's X,
Fate's Warning, and Echolyn. (all of these bands have decent record
deals, except for perhaps Magellan). This would make a great Prog-Rock
festival and would introduce a lot of the fans of one group to groups in
a similar vein.
Another good show would be Marillion headlining for Cairo, IQ, Enchant,
and Fish (sorry couldn't resist <grin>).
Dream & Nightmare bands

The only good thing about these threads are:
1. The lurkers get a chance to post.
2. Occationally one really funny lineup comes along. (I saw one that made
me laugh pretty loud, can't remember it now)
Otherwise they cause a shitload of unintelligent postings. If we had an
edited digest Ken would have to make a digest just of these posts. That
way I could easily hit the <DEL> key.
Echolyn and Related Band Discussions
------------------------------------
Unlike the above mentioned types of threads, these are useful in that
many of us don't exclusively listen to Dream Theater and some of us might
like another band more (Oh the horror!!!). I have discovered many new
bands through these threads (I thank the applicable persons), and I hope
I have introduced others to bands they really enjoy. Many of the bands
talked about on here are small-time Prog Metal bands and Prog Rock groups
who are just making ends and really need help in the fan base category,
which will allow them to keep making albums and keep the types of music
we love alive.
Echolyn is one such band that I love to tout, since they are probably one
of the few Prog Groups other than Dream Theater with a position to make
it big in the music industry where they were signed on the premise that
they would retain their musical integrity and not try to become "pop"
machines churning out senseless #1 love ballads (sorry Van Halen fans, I
love them but they always have to put the one or two #1 songs ie. When
It's Love, insert the one off of Balance with all of the airplay). I
think Dream Theater has avoided this, "Balls and Chunk...."
Back to Echolyn, their new album is coming out on March 7th in the USA as
Jason Hartman (glad you like the song, nice sig. <grin>) pointed out in
the last digest. They use vocal harmonies to great effect (2 and 3 part,
the guitarist sings lead and harmonies, the vocalist sings lead and
backing, and the keyboardist sings backing) and the songs are in lots of
wierd time sigs, lots of orchestral type writing styles applied to creating
the songs (the keyboardist Chris and guitarist Brett are both classically
trained and write most of the songs). They are especially strange since
the stuff off of the new album (As the World) is stranger and even more
complex than their older stuff (Suffocating the Bloom, Echolyn, both out
of print). Lyrics are a mix of Egoist stuff, (What I have, is worth much
more, than all my words could ever say (sorry, this is from ear, all I
have is a recording of the second album on tape)) to cosmic (Set a
course, up ahead, straight into heaven). They are also a bit into The
Fountainhead and other works by the famous early Neil Peart influence.
I cannot more highly recommend this stuff, since they are releasing the
album on Sony the album should be in listening stations in several mall
stores and chains, or at least be in the bins. Give it a couple of
listens on successive visits to the store, let it sink in and pick up a copy.

BTW Half of the Progressive compilation tapes I made have been mailed out
so be expecting them over the next week or two. I thank everyone who had
an interest, I wish I was independantly wealthy and had lots of time,
because I would make you all tapes. But unfortunately, that is not the case.

A few questions for technical discussion and debate on the net.
1>-On the DT song Mirror, on John's opening solo, that is the Lydian mode,
isn't it (1-2-3-#4-5-6-7)? What types of chords can you use to bring out
the sound of this mode? I've found that moving chord drones up a whole
step (I think, this is coming from memory so I might be wrong) works. Are
there any other ways?
2>-What is the piano chord progression on Space Dye Vest? It sounds like
a circle progression in several different keys. Any input here?
3>-Does anyone have the Guitar magazine with the music for Lie in it? I'd
love to know where I can back order or possibly get a copy of it from.

Many of you may know, it took about three years for the
I&W TAB book to come out. Well, that number 3 also applies
to the upcoming Awake TAB book, yet we won't have to wait
three years. Try THREE WEEKS! Yep'ur, you heard me right.
Talked to some guys at Warner Bros. and Petrucci just sent
them the edited sheets. Should be out and ready in 3 weeks.
Save your dimes and nickels. Start bugging your music store.
I'll post here with info on ordering direct if your music
store isn't good. Also, the Petrucci guitar video is still
in production. No release date as of yet. In case you are
wondering, I don't know how they'll handle the 7-string parts.
Hope they won't do any stupid alternate tunings!

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but anyway ...
I was watching my better half play the original Super Mario Brothers game
on regular Nintendo. As I was listening to the music on the very first
level (1-1), I thought to myself that it would be so cool if DT played it
live in the middle of a jam or something. Before you flame me or
compliment me, listen to it yourself. There is a high end bass that JM
could play, and two harmonizing melodies that JP and DS could play. MP
would have to make up some bet ing the rythm of the original music.
Everyone would recognize it. If you actually listen to the music, the
rhythm of the melody is kinda wacky. They could even do a medly of the
other levels, they all consist of the same elements. Anyway, whadda ya
think?

Well, I wouldn't really say that Echolyn is that similar
to DT. They do have complex music with lots of time changes and
cool rhythms though.
I would still *highly* recommend seeing them live. I've
seen them twice now and before I'd seen them live I hadn't been
that impressed by their albums. They put on a *fantastic* live
show though (rivalling DT in overall quality). Their vocals are
extremely powerful and the music is incredibly tight in their live
show. Many of the people who I was with had never heard them
before and they came away very impressed. After hearing them live,
I listened to their studio album and it was much more impressive
(I think they do come across more powerfully live though, maybe
because of the mix on the album, I'm not sure).
I'd recommend seeing them live to any DT fan, though don't
go in expecting a typical metal band or another Dream Theater.

Both great vocalists, but in different ways. I'd give Geoff the
edge, seeing as he's been around longer than Chris Scott and the boys
from Precious Death. I just thought that it was cool that someone
else posted a Precious Death guy in the same Ytsejam that I put in a
big push for PD. Great Galactic Cowboys/ King's X feel- with, IMHO,
better lead vocals.

Hum....I like Deliverance, but I don't think that either of the
forementioned ex-axes of Deliverance can touch Petrucci's playing.

As there have been some postings about bands containing Ytsejam members
recently, I should point out that Brent Phillips (panther@mit.edu) is in
a great band called LD50. I don't think he's mentioned the band here at
all, but you should check them out. There's a web page at
http://www.tns.lcs.mit.edu/~panther/ld50.html with information, sound bites,
etc. If you ask Brent nicely, he might even be willing to make copies of
LD50's demo tape for people.
I'd say LD50 has a heavier, more metal oriented sound than DT does, but I
think the DT influence does show. Perhaps the best way to describe the
sound is "kicks ass!" And, I might add, they have the only song with a
serious kazoo solo that I've ever heard. So check it out....

Forgive me for jumping on the no DT track for once but I was compelled to
respond about the person who posted in defense of Tesla (I'm sorry, I
forgot your name). I think Tesla is an excellent group. They have a
unique ability to be IMO exceptionally heavy without being fast, it seems
that's what they excel at. They may have some ballads out which always
seems to leave a bad taste in people's mouths but those ballads aren't
the super sappy songs that some bands like to put out. How can you
compete with "Paradise"?
Also, I agree on sticking with the music you grew up on as well. My
favorite bands are Dream Theater, Rush, and Queensryche but I still love
to listen to the stuff I grew up on like Motley Crue, Boston, WASP, Quiet
Riot, RATT, Twisted Sister (absolutely timeless), Dokken, and Aldo Nova
(bet no one knows who this is). I repurchased a lot of these albums on CD
since all my old copies were off vinyl.
Just thought I'd share!

Grettings 'jammers!
With all the people pissing and moaning about non-DT content
flooding the list, I thought I would try to start a new thread that
actually IS related to DT!!! (drums please). For most of DT's songs, I
get images in my head when I listen to them. For example, Metropolis
makes me think of a large, dark, futuristic looking city, Erotomania seems
like the inside of a huge clock with lots of gears and electonic
components spinning, and A Fortune in Lies reminds me of a bunch of greedy
men sitting around a table, counting money and smoking cigars. These are
just a couple of examples. It would be interesting to hear what others
think of/imagine when they listen to DT. It doesn't necessarily have to
coincide with the lyrics, but can be what the music causes you to think
about as a whole. Hopefully this can help to quench the throats of the DT
hungry.

Agreed 101%! I've dealt with Mike Burstin, sort of as a
contemporary, from back when both our collections could fill a single
porta-cassette-carry-case, and it's always been the red carpet
treatment. Same for Brian Cox. And I hope they don't think too unkindly
of myself. :)

I also see symbolism from Wait For Sleep. If you look in the girl's
hands, she's holding what looks like a picture in a frame. Hence the
lyrics,
"God give me the power to take breath from a breeze
And call life from a cold metal frame"
The bed may also be a symbol for Wait For Sleep as well. The song refers
to laying in bed twice as well as to going to sleep (also in the title).
This is just my observation. Maybe you agree... Maybe Not...

I've heard 3 is one of their weaker albums, however the song itself is
very good... of course, I've never heard the album so I don't know.
If you want a good starting point of Crimson, type Red, their most Dream
Theater like album.

Nahh... just go for individual albums pre-1980... I haven't been
disapointed yet and I'm sure I won't be... (however the quality of the
mix on Leftoverture isn't all that hot (for the piano at least.)) Well,
we can't have everything.
