Surely you jest! While I will concede your point as to the rather sub-par
lyrics of Misfire, I must strenuously object to your implication that the
music to this song ... well, sucks. IMNSHO, Misfire has one of the
sweetest background guitar riffs ever! (I hope you know what I'm talking
about...I'd hum it for you, but...) I wish I could play something that
.. um, groping for an adjective... catchy/neat-o/*good*, as in brimming
over with the inherent qualities that makes something likeable.
Please listen to it again.

I've been on the list from one account or another for over a year and a
half, and I remember the good old days when if there wasn't much NEWS about
DT, there wasn't much discussion. I don't know about you, but my mailbox is
jammed with tons of other stuff that doesn't apply to DT. And I never have
time to read any of it because I'm busy wearing out the 'Page Down' key on
my keyboard blowing through digest after digest.
Oh, I know no one is forcing me to read this, and maybe I should reconsider.

Quick addendum: the list only reflects orders I have as of today (monday)
and your order may well be in my hand tomorrow, for all I know, so don't
panic if you don't see your name yet. :)
Here is a brief list of the orders that I have received, paid, and
the CD numbers you will all be getting... if you are on this list, I have
your order IN MY HAND and you are DONE, FINITO... all you need to do is kick
back, relax, toss back a Kypler's, and wait for my CDs to come in the mail
to me, and subsequently, to you. :)
I _am_ keeping a copy of this list, in case future authenticity issues
arise, you can be assured of the full _value_ of your Subconscious CD. Given
the number of DT albums sold total, there is one Subconscious CD for every
11,700 Dream Theater fans. Not a bad ratio eh!!
A quick note: you will notice I have set aside a few low numbers for
Kaoru, and I have done this because most of the Japanese Ytsejammers will be
doing a group order through her, and I wanted to get *some* of the low #'s
to the land of the Rising Sun, tis only fair after all. :) That's the only
orders that are not yet paid, because she still has to get the orders from
the others. Any Nihon-go Ytsejam members, email Kaoru-san if you want to get
a copy of the CD! If more are reserved than space I set aside, I will fill
another block of numbers somewhere in the 100's.

I have read all the comments and suggestions (and compliments!) in
your mail to me, both online and in the orders, and the response has been
so totally positive, so encouraging, it really brought a smile to my face.
You Ytsejammers have the most _class_ of anyone on the net. I really feel
that way. That's the impression I got after reading all that I've read. Real
class. I don't think I could ever do this over on TNMS (well, actually, on
a.m.r, since Jimmy would delete all my boot-related mail, grin) and I am
so happy about the early response on this that future CD releases are all
but assured.
I've heard everything from "This is a great service to all on the
Ytsejam" to "This is totally fuckin' awesome!" so I think I covered the full
range of possibilities on this one. :) If you see an errorr anywhere, feel
free to mention it to me and it will be corrected.
2. Discs still available
At this time I still have 63 copies unreserved, due to cancellations,
nonreservations, changes, and the clerical error I made back in my earlier
post to the 'Jam. Anyone who wants me to hold one for them, mail me here at
garion@indirect.com, and then you can send in your order whenever you are
ready to do so.
3. Discs REMASTERED!!
The CD pressing plant I got all my materials from previewed my current
master, and decided it just wouldn't do. Without charging me a penny more for
another glass master, they agreed to take on the job of fully digitally
remastering the disc! They gave me a great rate on the studio time too.
So now it's done! The disc has been totally redone in Dolby Digital
Surround Sound, compatible with any CD player but MUCH MUCH better than
before, and compatible with Pro-Logic systems for full instrument separation
on most tracks. It is also compliant with THX for all except the two covers
gig tracks and The Gorilla Session, or so say the engineers.
Don't worry: I kept DATs of both the original mix and a backup of
the mix for pressing. I've never seen a studio make so many backups in my
life, either, since they have double backups of everything, every version.
Every track stands out so much better, Eve and Change of Seasons are
_better than they were on TDOE_, and songs that I was hoping would sound
better, such as Don't Look Past Me and Mission Impossible, now have nary a
fuzz or distortion spot. It's so clean, it's the way CD was meant to be. I
was confident before that this disc would satisfy the DT collector that _had_
to have it all... now I am confident that if you like DT at all and are
familiar with the usual sound of their older boots.. it will BLOW YOU AWAY. :)
The tracks that were the worst originally; Wanted Dead Or Alive,
Tears, Winter, and The Gorilla Session, were improved tremendously. WDOA is
now on par with the best, Tears and Winter are downright tolerable (if you'd
only heard the HISS...) and Gorilla... well... we tried. :) It's okay, for a
recording that was horribly done to begin with.

One bootleg CD I've heard of but have yet to see mentioned
here is one called "Skyway Of Nightmares". I only know of
one person who has it (unless I missed someone else who does
in a digest or two).

Methinks someone should come up with a list of every single
DT bootleg CD available on the market and post it. It would
require some compilation and double checking, but it would
save a lot of time and effort (and perhaps $) so people
aren't repeatedly posting about the same things.

Hi there!
Here is my concert review of the Austrian Dream Theater show
on March 4th in Wels ("Alter Schlachthof").
In the early afternoon at about 2:00 pm my room mate, another friend of us
and myself began the long and demanding journey (15 minutes by train) from
Linz (the town where we're studying) to Wels.
When we arrived there at the "Alter Schlachthof" ("Old Slaughterhouse"), the
tour bus was already there and the stage was being set up. We were able to take
a quick look inside the concert hall before we left again.
We came back at about 4:30 pm, just right to see James LaBrie, John Myung,
Derek Sherinian, John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy (in order of appearance)
entering the concert hall.
Ticket sales started at about 5:30 and of course we were among the first
getting the tickets.
The doors opened at about 7:45. Fortunately we were at the beginning of
the crowd that streamed into the concert hall, so we managed to find a place
in the first row, directly in front of John Petrucci's place. Needless to say
we defended our positions with all our power...
A few words on the audience: there were fans from all over the world!
To my left there was a group of fans from Japan (!!!) and behind me were some
guys from Italy. I've also seen a lot of people from Germany.
At 8:15 Fates Warning opened the event. They played for about 45 minutes.
Although I haven't heard much of them before (just a few songs) I enjoyed
them. I don't remember the song titles they played (I think their set list
wasn't much different from that of the other European shows); one of the songs
that I recognized was "Eye To Eye" (saw it on eMpTyV).
By the way it was funny to compare Mark Zonder's drum kit to Mike's.
Mark's looked like a toy drum kit ;)
And now for something completely different:
At 9:30, the intro of "Pull Me Under", played from a CD, announced the
beginning of one the most impressing experiences in my 22 years old life.
The Gods themselves appeared on the stage and jammed into the song.
The next songs they played were "6:00" and the jamming part of "Innocence
Faded". Then came "Take The Time" with Mike's drum solo, followed by "Lifting
Shadows Off A Dream". John Petruccis solo came next. After "The Mirror"/"Lie"
came "Surrounded", and then Derek nailed down his keyboards solo (guitar-ish,
_incredible_). "A Mind Beside Itself" closed the regular program. As expected,
the encore was "Metropolis" (which we also heard during the sound check, btw).
The whole band seemed to have a lot of fun, despite (or because of?) the fact
that this was probably the smallest stage that they've played on during this tour.
The small stage was also the reason that they had to cut back the light show
to a minimum. Anyway, the place was sold out and James appreciated it.
But the best is still to come: During "Lie", James told one of the roadies to
bring some plastic cups and fill them with water. Then, after finishing the
song, James and John Petrucci handed the cups to the sweating audience (I was
lucky enough to grab one!) and Mike and Derek started playing a boogie-woogie!!!
During "The Silent Man", Mike was about two meters in front of me, and -
yeah - he recognized my Ytse Jam T-Shirt!!! He pointed at the Majesty logo
and showed me his thumb up!
A few other things that I remember: The sound mix seemed to be OK (at least for
those not standing directly in front of the (bass) speakers like us) - we had
no earplugs and so the mids and heights of the sound were very distorted.
During John Petruccis solo, the guitar/bass tech upset John's guitar stand
which resulted in a detuned acoustical guitar (John tuned it during playing
"The Silent Man").
All samples are triggered by John Myung (he uses a MIDIfied bass pedal) and
during JPs solo in "Silent Man" he played some chords on a guitar.
Derek did a great job, and he seems to fit into the group as much as Kevin did!
After the show, my room mate and I bought T-Shirts, and after drinking a
Coke we went to the stage exit to wait for the band members.
Derek came out soon and we asked him for an autograph. He signed our Awake
booklets, and then he noticed my "San Francisco 49ers" jacket. He told me
that he's a great fan of them. My room mate asked him what he does all the
day when he's not on stage and he answered he's sleeping. Then we told him
we liked his solo, and my room mate told him that I play keyboards and I asked
him what equipment he used for the guitar-ish sound in his solo (his JD-800
and his 01-W (if I understood him right), linked via MIDI).
After some more important blah-blah we shook hands (!) and Derek went to the
tour bus. What a nice guy! The next one who came out was John Myung, but we
noticed him too late and he disappeared in the tour bus. Then we waited
another 30 minutes but no other members appeared (After-show meetings really
suck if you're not invited). Since it was a cold, snowy night and we've already
had a lot of luck on that day, we decided to leave at about 0:30 am.

Well thanks for assuming I don't have free will enough to choose my own
path- I appreciate that greatly. :P I, on the other hand, rather enjoy
hearing other peoples interpretations and comparing them with my own
ideas, thanks. No one is forcing you to read this stuff, just go ahead

Well... Im actually a sometimes-fan of Depeche Mode, but I *do* think
that Dream Theater could play DM songs if the mood struck them. :) Seems

I am sorry, but I just don't agree. No one is saying that their
interperatation of the album art or of a song must be accepted as
what DT meant by it, they are just giving opinions and possibilities.
People have suggested things that I would have never even thought of,
not only for album covers, but also for meanings of songs.

As far as I know, (which doesn't mean a whole lot) this isn't
"RESERVED" for anything. Yeah, the posts should be mostly
DT-related, but that does not mean that people can't talk about
anything else on this mailing list. There is no way to make this
list strictly DT-content short of having a monitor or somthing.

I will not even touch this. If you don't like Rush, that is your
decision, but you cannot tell me that I need to give them up, nor
can you say that people can't mention or discuss them to some
reasonable length.

gosh i just keep getting behind and further behind on reading the digests....
im really excited about the possibilities of the Ytse conventions suggested by
BABS and i would be willing to go a good distance to participate in one...i
also play keyboard and would LOVE to be a part of a group of musicians playing
DT covers....just find me some transcriptions of the parts and im pretty sure i
could play them...
my school (univ of Toledo, Ohio) has been putting on a play called "Six
Characters in Search of an Author" the last two weeks and i thought something
would be really interesting to you : the incidental music (for piano) was
composed here by one of the profs and is all based on the song "Dust in the
Wind" by Kansas! i thought this was totally cool especially since i havent
heard Kansas before and they are so much recommended on this list... the music
was not disappointing and im working on getting a copy of it...they also played
the song at the end of the show and i was totally impressed...so much feeling
and so true to reality.....that is after all the theme of the play... it doesnt
have much of a plot but there are some great discussions about what reality
really is or isnt and the conclusions/implications are startling....i was in
shock for a full hour and a half after seeing the first time...it really left
me thinking....you may not ever have a chance to see a production of this play
but if you like to read (and like lyrics by bands like DT, which i assume you
do ) then get a copy of this play form the library and read it....very
provocative!!
ive been thinking about the discussions of meaning within DT songs
recently and it all sort of leaves me feeling incomplete...many of the songs
are not satisfactorily explained (such as UAGM, AMBI, etc) and i thought it
would be neat if we put together a compilation of the ytsejam "interpreters" to
supplement the "official" statements in th FAQ....id be willing to take on this
project....all i would need is for people to mail me their ideas about songs
which are not easily understood to me directly and i would put it together
making it available via my web page and maybe getting a spot for it on the
archives....anyone else think this is a good idea????.... anyone else want to
help????.....is this just stupid???? ;) (if you've already posted about
an interpretation of a song and have a copy ....you can just send that...)

To live forever really kicks ass, although I like the version on the
video more. But that was to be expected, it could never be better
than in Tokyo. I very much like the jazzy solo at the end, which John
just improvizes on stage ... brilliant.
Another Day is fine to but I don't like the song that much.
The edit of 'Lie' leaves out the second guitar solo, which is a
pitty. Well, I guess that's it for my first contribution to the
mailing list. There should be plenty more!

Actually, most of the people I've played Metropolis to (including myself)

I wish my band would play such a set. Our set sux. In my town,
we have a rather large following, (since we're the only band in town)
but these people all are bong-smoking, acid-droppin' metalheads (not
that I have anything against that). My only problem is that they
expect us to play nothing but Pantera and Megadeth. Metallica is too
weak for these guys. (We do play For Whom the Bell Tolls as a cover
anyway). Our next gig isn't until May, but we're playing for my old
high school's senior party. There'll be plenty of people there with
different tastes in music and this'll be our lineup...
