    Yo, YtseJammers!

Here's a big ol' dissertation on DT lyrical content etc. Hope you like it
    and respond.

First, I'd like to look at the commonly debated "Christian" content of
several DT songs. It is rumored that Moore and Myung are fairly
religious, and you can see it in a little of their songs. But there's
some "Christian" phrases in Petrucci's songs. For example, what is the
significance of the phrase "he is risen", usually reserved for Christian
songs in Killing Hand? Petrucci also argues against greed on WDADU in
Fortune in Lies and Status Seeker. Dominici's lyric for Afterlife also
could be read deeper, not literally "Will the blind have sight in the
Afterlife", but as the common difficult questions of the state of the
body and spirit in Heaven. Maybe there's an implied "will there be
animals in Heaven in there." Moore's Only a Matter of Time makes serious
allusions to some form of religion with the lines about his faith. Like
the song is about only a matter of time until Christ returns. Maybe the
dream-stricken prince of a pauper's descent is Christ, prince as Son of
God, but pauper as a poor carpenter on Earth. The dimly lit room could be
the darkness of the world. There's a lot more evidence of Christian
    content in that song.

Moving on to I&W (anyone notice you can find an I&W in that symbol?
weird), it is accepted that PMU is about themes of Hamlet, I still can't
make out the quote exactly at the end concerning solid/sullied, sounds
like solid to me. Another Day sounds like its about suicide "die another
day" "better to save the mystery", etc.. Take the Time is probably just
about a personal pet peeve of mine, people who ask stupid questions and
don't take the time to think first, although I think the song is talking
about more serious questions. Surrounded sounds like it may have
Christian themes "let light surround you" Moore says he sent those
spirits (evil ones) tumbling down the hill but will hold this one (holy
spirit) on high above him still. One last comment on I&W, Petrucci still
can't make up his mind, night awaits the lamb's (a reference to Christ in
the Bible) arrival in under a glass moon, but dreaming of the next world
will secure you a place in a lake of fire (Metropolis).

Awake blows all previous reasoning away as Moore opens the album with an
anthem that seems to express his wishes to do his own thing "nobody knows
what they want until they finally let it all go" - he wants to let DT go,
"found the sound but he's in too deep" - maybe he realized the sound he
wanted to play, but will never escape being known as a wild synth soloist
from DT (maybe that's why the synth solo is especially crazy in 6:00)
"Don't cut your losses too soon" - Moore wanted to do another DT album,
"cause you'll only be cutting your throat" - maybe he needed a little
more experience or $. Someone said maybe Innocence faded was about
Moore's faded Innocence, but maybe Petrucci wrote it about himself, if
some aforementioned contents were Christian in nature, because Voices
certainly isn't. Or maybe it is. Maybe Petrucci himself is struggling in
his mind. "Should I turn on my religion?" - implies religion is present.
"Reveal the Word when you're supposed to" -I'm waiting... "Don't expect
your own Messiah" - disillusionment? I'll come back later with more on
The Silent Man. It has been theorized that the "she" in LSOAD as well as
some KM songs is the Sister Wisdom mentioned in Proverbs. Maybe so. This
is getting real long and is quite general, but I'd like to know more
about the content of some of these songs.

Just my buck and a quarter. Flame me if you don't like long posts and
want me to post a dream band or something.

    It's Rick again-

I've read the responses to my previous post and it's great to see that I
am not the only one who holds the same feelings and opinions. I must
disagree with the comment that a band is not necessary goal for a guitar
player to have (this is all my opinion, BTW).

I posess some chops which I can play at rediculous speeds, but in reality,
I may never get to use them. It is tough to find good musicians who are
into technical music. Thus, I must find another musical outlet. Here at
Gustavus, I was lucky enough to become part of a band. The music we play
is simple (DA-DA, Cranberries, 10,000 Maniacs) and though I don't find it
personally satisfying to play these songs, the thrill of sharing a musical
experience with the members of my band and the crowd watching us more then
compensates. I consider myself fortunate to have found four other
musically inclined persons who are easy to work with, because it's true:
there are some BASTARDS out there who should not have instruments. And
the green-hair-let's-write-a-song-about-sponge-boy image is getting really
    FUCKING old.

So aspiring virtuosos, my message is this-
You must either step down a level in playing and have fun in a normal
band, or wait for real music to come back in style (which should be soon,
grunge is getting really old) and start a super-shred band.

I just don't have the paitence to sit around and wait for the latter.

                                                    Rick

    Hello fellows!

This is the first time I'm sending a message for DT mailing list!
I was wondering is there any other DT albums available? Here in Finland
the selection isn't so wide than for example in U.K.

I have When dream and a day unite(or something like that), Images and Words
and Awake. I know that there is some live albums as Live at the Marquee.
I would be thankful if someone could give me advice.

By the way I was listening DT in Helsinki on 22th february. The place
was sold out! It was a very amasing experience. First there was FW( it
was very good too), they started at 21:00(about) and played for an hour.
Then DT started with Pull Me Under! The show ended when clock was
over 01 am!! It is a very good experience to hear live my favourite band!!!

Waiting for advice about the albums.....thank you

    Pekka (pejusa@tukki.jyu.fi)

    *Quoting Jay Peele:
    >Also: To you sound engineer types (Hairball, The Doc):
    >Is it true that the instruments on Awake were recorded with effects on
    >(as opposed to adding the effects during mix down)???

I read an article in Guitar For The Practicing Musician w/ Petrucci
saying that they had indeed committed his guitar effects to tape.

As for everything else? Well, that's really hard to say. Probably here &
    there (i.e. the distorted keyboards, some of Myung's bass f/x). I wasn't
in the studio, so, everything I say (and have said) is/are merely (an)
    educated guess(es).

    (Major Gramatical Error Alert! Whoa...)

Then again, compression is an effect, and things are usually recorded
with compression (and gates), so, if you really want to get down to it,
chances are 90% of what you hear was recorded with SOME sort of effect. =)

But, I'm assuming you're talking about John's guitars, and, as it says
above, *he* said they did it, so, it MUST be true. =)

I don't feel the need to explain why this isn't frequently done, so,
unless someone asks, I'm not going to.

    Later,
-Hairball, one of those sound engineer types.

Somebody asked about the Lydian mode, and chords to go with it.

I can't tell you right now if John uses the lydian mode in the mirror
solo since I haven't thought about what mode it is. I think he just
created a melody that fits over the chords he used. You don't
necessarily have to stay in one mode.

About the lydian mode though: I feel the best way to think about modes
is to relate them to the relative major scale. For example F Lydian
would be C major. So the chords would be F, G, Am, Bmb5, C, Dm and Em.
When you wrote 1,2,3,#4,5,6,7, that would mean that you just take a major
scale and raise the 4th. Looking at the F lydian you see the intervals
are whole, whole, whole, half, whole, whole, half, so if you lowered the fourth
you'd be back at the major scale. So for chords to fit it, just build
chords in thirds using the notes of the scale. For more complex chords,
stack more thirds or add other intervals. If in the key of F you hear a
raised fourth, it might not be lydian, but the chord used might call for
a raised fourth in the melody to sound good.

I can take a closer look at Mirror and give you a more specific answer.

    Ben,
My email to you bounced, so I'm posting this to the list...

They only have one other album, "Hour of Restoration", which was their
first album. Unfortunately, it's hard to find these days since it went out
of print. If you like I could give you some phone numbers of mail-order places
that may be able to order it for you.
I'd say that "Hour of Restoration" is just about as good as "Impending
Ascension". If you like one, you'll almost certainly like the other. I'm not
really sure which I like better. I do listen to the second one a little more
    often, I think.
Magellan is supposed to release a new album this year (tentatively
called "Test of Wills") but last I heard they still had not started recording
    it.
I'm always happy to help out a new Magellan fan! :-)

"Forever" is "To Live Forever" (I don't know where James gets off saying that's NEW, that's one of their older songs!)

"Unknown Dreamsong" is "Eve" with a religious narration sample at periodic intervals, like those on "S-DV"

It was the first time I'd actually sat down and LISTENED to "Change Of Seasons" and PAID ATTENTION - I've heard it only twice, when I saw them live in July '93 and on the Bayshore instrumental jam, and not being a musician, I generally >> don't pay attention to every bloody note they play in jams. But this was really cool, vocals and all. Does anyone have lyrics to this? (And while I'm thinking of it, a set list for Bayshore? I ...ahem... misplaced my copy)

    Hello, everyone!

Last night I went to the Queensryche gig in Hamburg (Germany) -- which was absolutely fabulous! :-) -- and after the show, while heading for the entrance, I spotted Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater standing at the soundboard booth! I was quite surprised and stunned to see him and barely managed to ask him if he could sign my jeans jacket. ;-) I was so speechless that I even forgot to thank him for it.

    THANKS, MIKE! :-)

He told me that James was supposed to be there, too, but couldn't tell me where to find him. Oh, well ... Does anyone know whether the two bands know each other well? Or did Mike just come to see a great band perform? ;-) I wish I had had more time to ask him "everything I've always wanted to know -- but hadn't dared to ask". ;)

I can't wait to see Dream Theater on Monday in Bremen and Thursday in Hamburg. Hopefully I'll be able to add some more signatures ... :-)

    Greets, Matt

I think it was Mike Bahr who asked, but the first video ever played on MTV was "Video Killed the Radio Star." Now where's my beer? :)

The first MTV video was "Video Killed The Radio Star", wasn't it? I can't remember the group's name (The Wuggles?) If I get the full-beer, I'll take a large black-and-tan, please.

I can remember watching it when MTV first came on-the-air. I must have watched MTV for 3 hours straight! It was so cool back then, we didn't dare miss a single video.

Heh... maybe he was saying if you dream of being evil (or about Satan, or Hell, or whatever) you're going there! Who knows?

I've always read this to be... quiting dream theater will be hard... but now that I've made the descision to quit, I see that if I start thinking that I made the wrong descision, it could be bad for me...

Basically he's telling us to avoid saying "What if...?" to ourselves.

And I have it! Shelled out sixty bucks for the sucker, too!

It was recorded "Live in NY '93"; it isn't specific, and it features three unreleased songs as well as most of the stuff they usually play live, "Forever", "Unknown Dreamsong" - and "Change Of Seasons". Disk one is titled "Tragedy" and disk two is titled "Comedy". I haven't listened to them yet; I'll post after I do!

I checked with the guy at the counter and "Skyway Of Nightmares" is evidently a CD from the Rockfabrik concert in Augsburg, Germany. There was nothing else on the list I hadn't seen mentioned here or elsewhere. Each rare live import at this shop is thirty dollars, which isn't bad when you consider they're sold anywhere from $40 to $60, usually. If they don't have a particular import you're looking for, if it's on this (rather extensive) list they have, they can order it for you. Feedback later...

When I listen to songs, I get dinstinct 'colors' if you will... its hard to describe... sometimes these 'colors' coincide with album cover, and sometimes I just get a certain song is a certain color. For example, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's "Tarkus" gives me a color of yellowish-green. Its just the key, the way the song is wrote... and some of the color on the cover is that same color.

However, for DT songs... well, let me see. I definetly see red for Metroloplis... why? I don't know. For Innocence Faded purple or perhaps a dark blue. For A Mind... I see blue, especially Voices. Space Dye Vest gives me a ruddyish orange haze type feel. Scarred is almost the same, a little more yellow.

I know..... it sounds weird, but really, when I think of a song I think of a color too...

No static on the recording. No deeps bass (nothing above 12 kHz). The demos sound better than the "Official 1986 Demos" CD. The packaging is ok, with a chrome font for the dream theater, and all 5 guys' heads floating over a live stage shot, with the stage mostly dark.
