Actually, the jazz chord progresion in the beginning of Scarred sounds a lot
like the music from one of the earlier levels over Super Mario Bros. 2 I'm not
sure which one exactly, but that's the first thing that popped into my head
when I first heard the song.

    --- FORWARDED MAIL FOLLOWS ---

    Hello everyone...

A matter has come to my attention that is of the utmost
importance to all of us online.

Simply put, a couple of senators have proposed a particularly
heinous piece of legislation titled the "Communications
Decency Act of 1995" (Senate Bill S. 314). Basically, the
bill would subject all forms of electronic communication --
from public Internet postings to your most private email --
to government censorship. The effects of the bill onto the
online industry would be devastating -- most colleges and
private companies (AOL, Compuserve, etc.) would probably have
to shut down or greatly restrict access, since they would be
held criminally liable for the postings and email of private
    users.

Obviously, this bill is designed to win votes for these senators
among those who are fearful of the internet and aren't big
fans of freedom of speech -- ie., those who are always trying to
censor "pornography" and dirty books and such. Given the
political climate in this country, this bill might just pass
unless the computer community demonstrates its strength as a
committed political force to be reckoned with. This, my friends,
is why I have filled your mailbox with this very long message.

A petition, to be sent to Congress, the President, and the media,
has begun spreading through the Internet. It's easy to participate
and be heard -- to sign it, you simply follow the instructions
below -- which boil down to sending a quick email message to a
certain address. That's all it takes to let your voice be heard.
(You know, if the Internet makes democracy this accessible to the
average citizen, is it any wonder Congress wants to censor it?)

Finally, PLEASE forward this message to all your friends online.
The more people sign the petition, the more the government will
get the message to back off the online community. We've been doing
fine without censorship until now -- let's show them we don't plan on
allowing them to start now. If you value your freedoms -- from
your right to publicly post a message on a worldwide forum to your
right to receive private email without the government censoring it --
you need to take action NOW. It'll take fifteen minutes at the most,
a small sacrifice considering the issues at hand. Remember, the age
    of fighting for liberty with muskets and shells is most likely over;
the time has come where the keyboard and the phone line will prove
mightier than the sword -- or the Senate, in this case.
Here's what you have to do to sign the petition:

send an e-mail message to: S314-petition@netcom.com
the message (NOT the subject heading) should read as follows:
    SIGNED <your online address> <your full name> <U.S. Citizen (y/n)>

    Hey Brett,

Lighen up! Let's keep our differing opinions on a civil basis. You say you
can accept an opinion of preference and then go on to flame that opinion so it
appears you don't accept it. You obviously like Steve Howe and you're entitled
to that, HOWEVER, there is nothing ABSURD about my opinion. I stand by my
observation. I don't consider Steve a MASTER like you do. If you recall, I
gave his some credit for some great stuff but I don't think he is as good a
technician as a Petrucci or a Rabin. Could be a style thing but I'm more
inclined to believe it is actual ability.

I wonder, are you a musician? If so, I'll pay more attention if you can
provide a more compelling case for Steve's playing. If not, then I don't
weight it quite so high. I AM a musician and listen and watch for technical
skills when critiquing other musicians. This is why I like DT so much. Each
of them are SUPERB technicians and it's generally not the case to have EVERY
member of any band on the same musical level.

BTW, Metropolis isn't just a bunch of noise and I really can tell the
    difference.

    Paul

             Yeah, I am...heh. Spruce Street Revival. =)

We mostly do original material (which makes us a bit of a
hard-sell to Philly area bars, but, whatever...our friends come in great
numbers and drink excessive amounts of beer, so, I don't know what the
hell they're so bitchy about), that is influenced by many different
sources. It's getting wierder all the time.

With any luck, we should be starting to record (haha, yeah, i've
said this about 15 times in the last 2 months) a new demo tape, here, at
the "house" (more on that some other time) with my semi-trusty 8-Track &
some other garbage (hey, YOU engineer with my 1/2 functional Magnavox boom-box
as monitors and get cleaner mixes! haha...), plus some equipment (a much
needed compressor/gate, and a couple mics) that was borrowed from a
friend of mine for running his band's live sound for free - actually, HE
got paid for running the opening band(s) sound; and, giving him a ride to
pick up his car from the shop. (Not that any of you care, but...)

So, we're kind of a hodgepodge of a bunch of people - imagine The
Grateful Dead meets Kansas meets the Allman Bros. and Phish at a jam session
with Pink Floyd, Journey, with a phenomenal (i.e. did drum clinics with
Neil Peart and studied with Rod Morgenstein) and some random blues/jazz people
who happened to be standing outside doing b**g hits, and you'll kinda see
what we sound like... =) (Eh, we're a rock & roll band, what can I say?)>

<sigh> It's *something* like that. Melodic blues/rock/fusion stuff.

So, why don't you? I'll come out & sing SiL for ya. I do a great
    Steve Perry impersonation. =)

My band played a gig the other night in Binghamton, NY, and we
did a jam on the Sesame Street Theme Song. That was a great way to end
the 2nd set. People fell on their asses laughing.

Try it out. Works great. =)

    Hello everyone, it's jerry...
Just want to point to a terrible mistake i made.
I have the great advantage to listen to my favourite CDs all day at my
office (thanks to my boss). The bad thing is, i've only got a small
radio and my CD-portable hooked up to it.
So while i was listening to Awake nearly once a day for about the last
two months, it really started to annoy me :-(
Guess what, I just had to hear it at home, volume up to 11 (S.T.amp) and
    the old magic reappeared!
This album is great, perhaps the best ever done... but don't spoil it on
a small radio or lousy car-hifi! It's like watching Bladerunner or
Wild at heart on a 13" TV-screen... no fun either.
    Just my humble opinion.

    ..read you - jerry :--)

P.S. If you don't like a certain thread, sometimes the best way might be
    to just ignore it.

Hey guys and gals!! Been about a month since I last posted because
of the chemical engineering design project. Anyone else a chem-e??

Anyway. Just wanted to thank Mike-Man Bahr for the incredible
amount of crap he's going through to get us the Subconcious CD. I don't
think there's too many people on this list (or any other list for that
matter) that would go to this much trouble to give fellow fans something
this special. So everyone with a beer close at hand, hoist it and yell
"FUCK YEAH MIKE!" at the top of your lungs! He deserves it!!

Also Mike related. A while ago I posted a help question for
people who don't like Fatez. Well, I dragged Parallels of my shelf,
LISTENED to it once or twice all the way through, and now I can't make it
through the day without singing the melody to "The Eleventh Hour" (the whoa-
whoa part). I LOVE THEM. I need to go out and buy the others now, but
just thought some of you long time Fates fans would like to know that
your "conversion" efforts are not going unheeded. Thanks gals and guys!

Now for some crappy news. I just read this month's Rip Magazine
(not the whole thing though) and there's an interview with Jim Matheos.
They talk about the bands current direction, address allegations that
Inside Out sounds too much like Paralells, and then it ends on a
disturbing note. Jim says that (I'm paraphrasing) the band is currently
considering new directions. The interviewer says then that he's glad
that there still going to do another album, then Jim says that the
interviewer cut him off before he could say "IF there's a new album"
SHIT!!!!!! There BETTER be a new album. But maybe somebody else caught
the article and can further corraborate my story.

My name is Dan...and I too, am a Tesla fan...

Seriously, though, I started getting interested in music by these
guys. They weren't the usual commercial crap out there. They could
actually play. My first artists that I listened to were Tesla,
Stryper, and Steve Taylor. I then got into more heavy metal like
    Deliverance (now Queensrychean prog), then Tourniquet, then Megadeth;
then finally I got turned onto progrock and Dream Theater and
Queensryche (and King's X, Galactic Cowboys, Precious Death...).
But, I still hold Tesla in high regards.

I'd never lump them with Nirvana or the Smithereens.

Someone wrote a few digests ago wondering why if there are so
many good guitarists on this list why aren't they all in bands. Someone
else wrote back with a pretty good reason about goatees and socks,
    (classic thoughts by the way).
My .02$: I used to be in a Skid Row,Warrant, Ratt type band
about 3-4 years ago. I've now been playingfor about 10 years (maybe 6
seriously) never taken a lesson but I canstill play fairly well. I can play
"Erotomania" all the way through exceptfor the following parts: 4:36
through 4:51 and 5:06 through 5:23 on yourlocal cd player. Reason being
not because I physically can't play them,I definitley can muster up the
ability, but because there are so many songs I want to learn how to
play and only having an hour a night if I am lucky to remember a million
notes isn't easy. I learn what comes easiest to remember and thats about it.
I would love to be in a band right now also, but 1. The music I like to
    play,
short hair doesn't go over to well (damn I should of never cut it off) at least
not well in a club type situation. 2. I am looking but not to seriously because
I don't want to go the paper ad way of finding a band, I just want guys to
get together with on a saturday, jam out some DT and Metallica and QR,
whilst getting alittle blurred from some guy named Sam Adams. If
everyone could play guitar like JP, or hit a baseball like Frank Thomas,
    we'd all be millionaires.

Sorry for the length and non-DT content. Later

This is listed for $55 at cdnow.com. Mike Burstin's boot list says this is the
same as LitS. Is this true? Is it just as good? If so, this is good news,
because I heard somewhere that LitS is now selling for $150. Thanks.

Well, isn't there something like 700+ 'Jammers out there? Surely opinion on
this must be mixed, and we should all realize that not all 'Jammers share our
*individual opinion*. We have to consider both lurkers and posters - Ytsejam
    belongs to all of us.

Just because one person doesn't like tangential postings doesn't mean such
postings should end. It's the perogative of the individual to read, ignore,
or delete such postings. That's the beauty of not having a moderator - we
can choose what we want to read...or not read.

Yes, I think some of these so-called "off-topic" threads are silly, but I've
also learned a lot from others... This very issue came up on AOL, and a lot
of people defended "favorite music" postings. As for myself, if it weren't
for the other Ytsejammers and AOL'ers, I don't know if I would even be into
Magellan and Marillion, or be able to track down out-of-print albums like I
    have.

Okay, I'm off the soapbox now! <g>

Hey - *no one* knows the address for "Screaming in Digital"?? I have yet to
get an answer on this... Please e-mail me privately if you can help me out.

I found a really cool way of making a set list great. play your own music!!! My band has supported many cover bands in the past and always played sets with ALL original songs. Sometimes it went over real well, sometimes not. The important thing for us is: its OUR music and we play for our own enjoyment, if other people like it great, if not -- who cares anyway...

Does anyone know where I can get a CD copy of the Dance of Eternity bootleg? I heard it the other day and it sounds very good. Email any info to: DaggarJon@Urvax.Urich.Edu, Nightmare band post optional...

Interesting thread... I'm almost the same way myself. When I listen to PMU it reminds me of gray and flowing clouds, and all full of energy. It's just an energetic song for me and the mood seems gray/black to me. 6:00 is yellow for me, and Voices is gray/dark too. LTL makes me think Blade Runner for some reason. (Walking throught the winter streets alone, he stops to take a breath blah blah watching from above; just reminds me of Decker) The Killing Hand gives me a lot of imagery. It reminds me of a war-torn futureistic battle field, kinda like in move Terminator, but not all the machinary etc. Weird...

    Here's an idea:

You can all redeem your beers at Ytsecon '95!!! :)

I'm still working on a time'n'place for the Phoenix Ytsecon. I'll very very likely use my own home for it, since I don't suppose more than a couple dozen people can come, and I am going over the logistics of it while simultaneously listening to pre-presses of Subconscious and pumping my adrenaline up chanting to myself "they're gonna SHIT when they hear this stuff!! this is too cool!" over and over.

And my dog told me it sounded totally cool.

I would like to comment on some of the earlier interpretations of DT's music:

Michael Van Opstall <mavanop@grfn.ORG> wrote: >First, I'd like to look at the commonly debated "Christian" content of >several DT songs. It is rumored that Moore and Myung are fairly >religious, and you can see it in a little of their songs. But there's >some "Christian" phrases in Petrucci's songs. For example, what is the >significance of the phrase "he is risen", usually reserved for Christian >songs in Killing Hand? Petrucci also argues against greed on WDADU in >Fortune in Lies and Status Seeker. Dominici's lyric for Afterlife also >could be read deeper, not literally "Will the blind have sight in the >Afterlife", but as the common difficult questions of the state of the >body and spirit in Heaven. Maybe there's an implied "will there be >animals in Heaven in there." Moore's Only a Matter of Time makes serious >allusions to some form of religion with the lines about his faith. Like >the song is about only a matter of time until Christ returns. Maybe the >dream-stricken prince of a pauper's descent is Christ, prince as Son of >God, but pauper as a poor carpenter on Earth. The dimly lit room could be >the darkness of the world. There's a lot more evidence of Christian >content in that song.

I agree with most of the interpretations above, although I don't think that Fortune in Lies or Status Seeker have too many (if any) religious or Christian connotations. I think they are generally social commentary. I see how your interpretation of Only a Matter of Time is plausible, but, personally, I think that it says that if faith is your guide then personal success (or self-fulfillment) is only a matter of time. I think the Killing Hand is sort of a fairy tale with "he is risen" as an allusion, but I don't think it carries any of the traditional religious or Christian connotations.

    >like solid to me. Another Day sounds like its about suicide "die another >day" "better to save the mystery", etc.. Take the Time is probably just

Another Day (if memory serves) was a song Petrucci wrote for his dad long ago when his dad was very sick; happily, Petrucci's dad is now doing well.

    >about more serious questions. Surrounded sounds like it may have >Christian themes "let light surround you" Moore says he sent those >spirits (evil ones) tumbling down the hill but will hold this one (holy >spirit) on high above him still. One last comment on I&W, Petrucci still >can't make up his mind, night awaits the lamb's (a reference to Christ in >the Bible) arrival in under a glass moon, but dreaming of the next world >will secure you a place in a lake of fire (Metropolis).

And I would add that Metropolis ends with "love is the dance of eternity"; sort of speaks for itself.

    >Awake blows all previous reasoning away as Moore opens the album with an >anthem that seems to express his wishes to do his own thing "nobody knows >what they want until they finally let it all go" - he wants to let DT go, >"found the sound but he's in too deep" - maybe he realized the sound he >wanted to play, but will never escape being known as a wild synth soloist >from DT (maybe that's why the synth solo is especially crazy in 6:00) >"Don't cut your losses too soon" - Moore wanted to do another DT album, >"cause you'll only be cutting your throat" - maybe he needed a little >more experience or $. Someone said maybe Innocence faded was about >Moore's faded Innocence, but maybe Petrucci wrote it about himself, if

??? I don't see this, but I don't really see anything else, either. After DT's first real tour, perhaps they are waking up to some realities of totally unsheltered life (with no place to call "home" for more than a day or so) and these inspired songs like Innocence Faded and Awake's darker edge in general.

    >some aforementioned contents were Christian in nature, because Voices >certainly isn't. Or maybe it is. Maybe Petrucci himself is struggling in >his mind. "Should I turn on my religion?" - implies religion is present. >"Reveal the Word when you're supposed to" -I'm waiting... "Don't expect >your own Messiah" - disillusionment? I'll come back later with more on >The Silent Man. It has been theorized that the "she" in LSOAD as well as >some KM songs is the Sister Wisdom mentioned in Proverbs. Maybe so. This >is getting real long and is quite general, but I'd like to know more >about the content of some of these songs.

If anything, I view those references as anti-religious. He's starting to question things, and when he gets to some answers he doesn't like, he is tempted to "turn on his religion" and forget the questions. But, he decides that it is just the "voices in his head" telling him to, and that it is HE (the singer/character in the song) who must answer these questions, not a Messiah. I don't get the impression that many of Petrucci's songs are religious or Christian with the possible exception of Metropolis. It has been said that Metropolis is kind of a fairy tale (between two brothers, the Miracle and the Sleeper), so maybe that answers this question, but I still think it has Christian overtones.

Sorry this message is so huge, but I hope it's content justifies it. I tried to quote only the necessary information (which is quite a bit for a good analysis effect). Please e-mail all flames (I hope I haven't offended anyone; it was not my intention); let's keep the list clear of them.

    Steve
