    Hey guys!

I have another item I'd like to discuss here on this list
and (drummmmmmms) I think it's DT related...

So, how do you define 'PROG MUSIC'?

Is it just music with many unexpected breaks in it?
Is it music with many changes in songstructure, harmonies, tempi, ...
Is FW other prog than DT??
On this list there was mentioned QR is doing prog music too and
if that's true, where do you find the prog elements in the music
    of QR?

Earlier I used to think that prog music was music that is based
on instrumental complicated structures and vocals 'running against'
the instruments. When I heard DT then, I noticed, that you can call
this prog too although there is a 'normal' song structure and not
just incredible breaks added to oneanother. Now I think that prog
music is (somehow) intelectuel music because it's based on intelligent
song writing and arrangements. Can you agree to this?

I hope this wasn't discussed on this list before and I could
perhaps give you one more interesting theme to talk (mail) about.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Bernd.

Yes, yes, and... yes. I listen and enjoy all three... it was Tesla,

    Mike Bahr,

I wouldn't assume no one knows of Aldo Nova. You know how diversified our
    tastes are.

I have to agree with the people who've posted their likes of 80's rock.
Although I'm into very technical playing (DT, Yngwie, etc) as a guitarist
of 14 years, I also love the simpler rockin' stuff such as Ozzy, Dokken,
AC/DC, Maiden, Tesla, MSG, as well as some newer stuff (Pantera, Jackyl,
    etc).

Another note: I think we're too hard on people that can't spell Dream
Theater or abbreviations (DT). I notice a lot of grammatical mistakes as
well as spelling mistakes all the time, but I get the general idea. And
this is coming from an engineer!

I'll be there on the 15 to see DT for the first time (seems like I've
    waited ages...)

Can anyone tell me how the band is arranged on the stage (ie who stands
where). If I'm going to queue for hours so I can stand under Myung's
nose, and then he comes on the other side of the stage I'll be a tad
    peeved :-)

    Well, hello...

Amazingly enough, I will refrain from posting anything having to do with
a_d_o e_g_n_er_ng. (i'm not even gonna SAY IT! HA!)

This regards the "lyrical interpretations" that are going on here.

IMO, "A Fortune In Lies" is about sacrificing your artistic integrity
    to make money. (selling out)

"Here is a poor man, the heart of this monster creation"
Trans: "I'm broke, and that's why I'm thinking about doing shitty music"

"He said we both would be heroes, and I was lead into temptation."
Trans: "The starving musician in me says, 'I wanna eat. Do something that
will make money. Play brilliantly, and everyone will respect you.'
               This sounded okay."

"You can make a fortune in lies" - make money doing music that's not you
"You can keep a giant alive" - sell lots of records for the record co.
"You can ride the red" - you can slide by on the "blood" of your
                                            artistic sacrifice
"Until everybody smiles" - pretty self-explanatory.

Christianity? Eh. I don't think so.

I mean, as long as you can support what you're saying, you could say that
"Mary Had A Little Lamb" was about beastiality - "had" in a sexual context.
"His fleece was white as snow" - "fleece" = metaphor for semen.

Okay, well, MAYBE that's a little ridiculous, but, I hope you see my point.

As Freud once said..."Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

(and, incidentally, did you all know that the line "Sail on silver girl"
in S&G's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was interpreted by someone as a
reference to a hypodermic needle, and therefore, the song was about heroin?)
    -----------------------------
    Since I'm on my soapbox:

The only "BLATANT" religious references seem to come in "Voices." But,
personally, IMO, the whole "Mind Beside Itself" trilogy just reeks of
Extreme's "III Sides to Every Story"'s _Everything Under The Sun_.

If you haven't heard it, you should. But, to save you all some $, think
about this: The _3_ songs that make up "EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN" all
have to do with self-introspection, and many religious topics.

Is this coincidental? I don't think so. I know they listened to that
album, especially that "side." How? Because, as I previously (about 6
years ago) posted that when Kevin called my radio station to do an
interview I wasn't aware was gonna happen (thanks to my roommate), I was
in the middle of playing the 2nd out of those 3 Extreme songs, and told
Kevin we'd have to go on the air live, and we'd do it after this song.

When we hit the air, I said, "Sorry to interrupt that song..." blah-blah.
Kevin goes, "Yeah! Really! Put that Back On!"

Me: "Oh, you guys like that?"
Kev: "Yeah! We listen to it constantly on the bus."

Okay, it's paraphrased a bit, but, those words did come out of his mouth.

It has often been said that DT is "Rush for the '90's." Well, consider this:

A member of Rush (forget who, probably Neil or Geddy) said they act as a
sponge that absorbs what's going on around them musically, and squeezes out
their own interpretations with their own influences.

Now folks...(god, i sound too much like that other RUSH...DON'T GET ME
    STARTED ON LIMBAUGH!)

I'm not saying this is bad. No, no. Maybe the statement about DT being
"Rush for the '90's" has some validity! =)

    Ahem. <insert commercial>

I have a file that was probably d/l'ed off the internet before I got it
that has an interview with Kevin explaining what "Wait For Sleep" was about.

I can post it up if someone wants.

I picked up the Silent Man single CD yesterday evening. Track list
    is as follows:

    Silent Man (of course)
    Take the Time (demo version)
    Eve (studio version)

Silent Man is direct off of the Awake CD.
Take the Time demo version is pretty close to the real version. The
only thing that seems to have been removed is the annoying glam
metal echo that was on James' voice. Makes it sound like real
    pussy metal.
Eve is an instramental song. First time I've ever heard it, it's
pretty cool. Has a Marty Friedman/Kitaro sound to it.

I also picked up the new Van Halen CD. I'm still kinda mixed
feelings about it. I also haven't given the thing a full listen
    yet.

    Hey guys (and gals??),

I have now been receiving this digest for a week and I have a few comments/
observations/questions. First my questions: Since I am new, what
is this Subconscious cd thing, it sounds good but I have not seen much
in the way of details. Also, some of the acronyms are a little cryptic
( I can figure out some of the DT references to songs, but some of
the more conventional abbreviations have escaped me, like IMHO and
the likes). I also would like to know the accepted means of replying to
people, for instance can I e-mail people directly, or do I have to go through
the digest, are there preferences/restrictions I should be aware of??

OK, enough of the questions (For now). Now my observations:
I can definitely relate to the complaints about non-DT related materials,
but get a grip people, ignore it, read the contents of the digest, no
biggie. There is a lot of junk, but someone might learn of something
new and/or interesting if they read something they had no intention
of reading. I am hoping to find out about a 'Rush" list, and have
already seen some bands mentioned here that I have never heard of
that sound like they are AT LEAST worth a listen (Echolyn, Magellan,
etc..). Another observation is that many of your taste's out there are
VERY narrow (while, of course, others are not). I myself have a Very
eclectic taste in music (RUSH, Queensryche, (old) MARILLION, DT,
NIN, ...Thrill Kill Kult, KMFDM, Stone Temple Pilots,etc...), and do
not enjoy having bands that I have found some value in being slammed by
people who have not 'Taken The Time" to look at what some of these bands
are trying to say or do. I agree everyone has a right to their opinion,
but can't we all accept the fact that while we might not appreciate the
music, the bands are (hopefully) out there doing what THEY want to do,
and finding people who can relate to THAT. If some of it seems mindless,
that's OK, that might very well be what they are trying to appeal to...
and may in fact be doing it in an original way.

That's enough of THAT for now.
Now for a comment/rebuttal: NO one can slam RUSH and get away with it...
Rush may seem like a sell out to some metal aficionados(?), but
what they have consistently tried to do is stay current with what is
happening musically around them, as well as experiment with things (and
not always successfully, look at what happened to 'Roll the Bones').
The instrumental excellence as well as the multifaceted lyrics make
this band a hard one to top. (Any wonder why DT is consistently compared
to them??). And Finally (yeah, I know I've gone on and on but...),
I know you guys have already answered about MTV's first video,
but I am not sure of the level of awareness this list possesses about
    the members of "The Buggles" who did Video Killed the Radio Star;
Two of the members joined YES for the DRAMA LP, and then went on to
form ASIA, they were Geoff Downes, and Trevor Horne. Just thought I
would throw that in (THAT SHOULD EARN ME THAT BEER AS WELL, HUH???)

There were a couple of people talking about the lyrical content of some
Dream Theatre songs, and I couldn't let the discussion die without addding
    my two bits.
Dream Theatre are technically superb. Almost God-like in their mastery of
their respective instruments. But insturmental mastery won't make a good
band on its own. A truly great band is able to communicate ideas and emotions
through there music, which Dream Theatre does. In fact, you can take the lyricsto almost any Dream Theatre song and you will have a very good piece of poetry,
which isn't all that common in todays world of music. The song Space-Dye Vest
sticks out in my mind as an especially good example of this, which is why I'm
so sorry to see Kevin Moore leave the band. Space-Dye Vest expresses almost
perfectly the feelings I had in a relationship I was in with a girl in my
apartment building. I listen to the song, and it's like I'm with her all
over again. The words apply "I'll smile and I'll learn to pretend",
"Love is an act of blood and I'm bleeding", "Don't ever come near me again,
Do you really think I need you?"
Yep. Dream Theatre are musical Einsteins. Awesome musical ability, relevant
lyrical subject matter, poetry, excellent live shows and tight, crisp, playing.
Who can ask more from a band? LONG LIVE DREAM THEATRE!!!!!!!!

Personally, (and a few other people I know as well) it reminds me of
a bugs bunny cartoon. The 'Untouchables' one. When Elegant Mess
(Bugs) is being chased around through that food processing plant, the
background music sounds very similar. I always get visions of Bugs

still linked to my childhood in many ways).

Please don't Flame me for the non-DT content but I am posting this for anyone
    interested in Skid Row.

Last night (March 7) I had the chance to see Skid Row at RPM's in Toronto,
next door to the Warehouse of "Bad Back Jam" Fame (DT content) on their Live
Listening Tour. I can say this much after the first couple of listenings
(yes, they played the CD in full prior to show) that the new stuff is much
heavier. They played for approx. 2 hours (two encores included). They played
all the new songs and a few old ones. Last song of the night, "Get the Fuck
    Out".

Best thing is, tickets were only $13.00 Canadian. For those in the US that's
about $5 US :) Going to see them tonight again but in Buffalo @ a much
    smaller club (Blind Mellon's).

FYI from Buffalo they go to Providence then New York then to Europe to play
    in 10 different cities.

BTW Toronto & Buffalo were both sold out.

    Bob

Ahem (throat clearing noises), can you play better than Steve Howe?

I rest my case. I like the comment about accoustics, but I really
like his soloing, too. I don't know about Yes, never really listened
to them, but with Asia, his solo work is very impressive. His new
work with them on "Aqua," he only plays the rhythm accoustical parts.
Al Petrelli (a very good lead guitarist) has taken his soloing
position for it. Overall, it makes an excellent album.

Silent Man seems to be about someone that really sits back and doesnt'
care about the bad things that are going on in the world. First, Petrucci
asks whether silence is a voice never heard - nothing is being said, or a
message with no receivers - something is being said but no one is
listening. The Silent Man, apathetic, thinks he is a victim of his
parents, brought into a cruel world by their earthly desires. If he
remains apathetic and rebels, do they stand to lose their values in
depression because they care about his future. Meanwhile, he is only
awake when there is reason and balance, he enjoys the good but ignores
the bad, when "they have to suffer" or "when theres no answer" He wants
to hide behind the great wall of security and separate himself from real
people. At the end the Silent Man considers sin and God, and decides
rather than "sailing by on the winds of silence" or remaining unknown and
separated from the world (a theme of Caught in a Web, and a recurring
theme from Awake, possibly because Dream Theater considers themselves
removed from the world of pop music), he will swim as a productive member
    of society.

Not so sure about that ending, but that's my feelings on this song. I'll
    have more later.

Space-Dyed Vest has inspired me lyrically like you would never
believe. I think it's one of the best songs (Kev's best) they have
written. It kinduv reminds me of this girl I had a crush on and was
too chickenshit to talk to her (I don't even have the balls to just go
up and say "Hi"). Everytime I hear this song, it almost me
think, "Try." It's weird. Much better than the Bugs Bunny
    experience, I think, anyway...
