Hi all,
Just had a few questions for the all-knowing people on this list. First
what does Echolyn sound like? I saw their newest CD in a store and was
wondering if I should buy it. I also saw "For Madmen Only" by Atomic
Opera and was wondering if this disc was any good. Any info would be
much appreciated. Please respond to me so that we won't clutter the list
up like I am doing now *laugh*.

Hi all... I just wanted to respond to a number of things that have been
happening on the list the last few days. First of all, I'd like to add my
voice to the growing chorus of prog fans who've been recommending
Echolyn--they are a truly phenomenal band; in fact, the last band that had
such a major impact on me was, well, Dream Theater! I kid you not, these guys
are very, very special, and now that their new album, "As the World," is
finally out and available everywhere, you all can finally hear what those of
us in the trenches of the prog-rock underground have been talking about for
some time now. I'm going to see them this Friday night in Philadelphia (their
home town!) at the Theater of Living Arts, where they'll be performing the
new album in its entirety (all 70 minutes of it!), along with material from
their independently produced earlier discs ("Echolyn," "Suffocating the
Bloom," and "...and Every Blossom.") and perhaps even a new song or two. I
really think most DT fans will really like Echolyn, as they share many
characteristics: they're all virtuoso musicians; they write really complex,
well thought out arrangements, with lots of tricky time changes and wild
progressions; and their music comes completely from the heart, with zero
regard for commerciality. Granted, they're not nearly as heavy as DT, so fans
who are more into the metallic side of things may shy away from Echolyn's
more textured sound, but if you've been looking for a band with a fresh,
unique, and undeniably progressive style, look no further than Echolyn.
Secondly, I'd like to mention the fact that I happen to * like* reading
these 'dream band' lists, because I think it's interesting to see what kind
of stuff other DT fans are into besides DT. I think the eclecticism and
diversity of tastes displayed in these lists demonstrates that DT fans are
among the most musically open-minded fans around. With this in mind, I'd like
to post my own 'dream band' lineup--which, like my mind, is subject to change
at any moment. :^)
Vocals (female): Annie Haslam (Renaissance) or Mary Fahl (October
Project)
Vocals (male): Ray Weston (Echolyn), Geoff Tate (Queensryche), or Steve
Hogarth (Marillion)
Electric guitars (this is really tough!): Allan Holdsworth, Steve Morse

Violin: David Ragsdale (currently with Kansas), Jean Luc Ponty or Eddie
Jobson (UK)
Keyboards: Stuart Bell (Citizen Cain), Mark Robertson (Cairo), Chick
Corea, or Patrick Moraz
Bass: Michael Manring or Jeff Berlin
Drums: Terry Bozzio, Paul Craddick (Enchant), Chad Wackerman, or Mark
Zonder
Spiritual Guidance: Rush, Keith Emerson, and Jon Anderson :^)
I didn't pick any of the Rush guys, in spite of the fact that they've
been my favorite band for years, simply because I don't think they'd really
want to play with any other musicians besides each other, and I didn't pick
any of the DT guys because, as I said earlier, I think it's cool to give
people an idea of what other stuff you're into besides DT. As you can see,
I'm heavily steeped in progressive rock and jazz-rock fusion. :^) Well,
what do you think--is this an eclectic grouping or what?

The buggles were the first band to appear on the network that got
Dream Theater its first exposure, and, as it happens, their most

Queensryche is semi-prog. Its on the edge of prog-metal. Songs like Suite
Sister Mary could be consitered prog... and they did afterall do a
concept album. And they use keys... so they could be called a prog band,
but really they're just a very talented rock group.

Somewhat... bascially its hard to find a prog-love song. :)
But then again, Gentle Giant did a semi-love song (the only reason why I
remember this is because I'm listeing to that very song right now!) But
still its done in a poetic sense and the singing is very good. Not just
"I want to make love to you." Shit....
Anyway... to define Progressive. (Note the big P.)
It is a style started in 1969 and is a direct descendent of the
psycadelic era of music. All those weird long jams of that period were
starting to be done by more musically inclinded or trained people and the
lyrics were changing since the anti-war movements was ending. Instruments
of that era, like the mellotron carried over to Prog and is used quite a
bit by many of the bands of that period. The first true Prog band was
King Crimson (note that they are still the only band from that era that
is truely playing Prog. Their current line up has 2 guitars, 2 bass, and
2 drums, and they all play different songs at the same time... really
cool stuff. :)) All other prog bands have either turned commertial or
broken up. The style of Prog generally had these tell-tale signs:
1) Long songs (I have one album that is a 70 minute song. Woah. :))
2) Weird orchestration. Along with the guitar, bass, and drums, were
mellotrons, trumpets, timpini, xylophones, violins, violas, cellos,
flutes, oboes, saxaphones and any more classical instruemnts
3) Complex writing. Weird time sigs, counterpoint, out of tune dueling
mellotrons, Prog had it all. :)
4) Intelectual lyrics. No love songs here, no, they wrote about strange
ancient rituals involving worshiping the sun. (No joke... check out Tales
from Topographic Oceans!) Robert Fripp, guitarst for King Crimson once said:
"In the 50's and 60's people were writing 3 minute songs about teenage
love, and in the 70's people were writing 20 minute songs about nothing
inparticular." Most Prog lyrics are really, really, weird. :)
and 5) Bill Burford. Yes. This person was in EVERY prog band ever made...
eh, well no, not all of them... just most of them. :) But he's a damn
good drummer.
Now... then there is progressive music (note the small p.)
It is music that, just like it says, progresses. It is continually
redefining itself. If a band releases 5 albums and all are in different
styles, then it could be consitered progressive. That is why progressive
music is so hard to define. Dream Theater is a semi-Progressive
progressive band. Dream Theater is relitively simple compared to some of
the Prog bands in the 70s, but don't get me wrong, they are still
incredibly complex.
Peter Gabriel wrote about progressive music in one of his songs... I
think one of his quotes sums it up best,
It is the jugsaw, it is purple haze.
It never stays in one place, but it's not a passing phase.
It is in the singels bar, in the distance of the face.
It is in between the cages, it is always in a space.
It is here. It is now.
When you eat right thru' it you see everything alive.
It is inside the spirit, when enough grit to survive.
If you think that it's pretentious, you've been taken for a ride.
Look across the mirror soony, before you choose, decide.

I will take this to mean that YOU are an Asia fan. It is too bad that he
did not continue playing with them on Aria (their latest), but I agree,
Petrelli is an excellent substitute. I also must agree that Aqua is a
fabulous album. I love Aria as well, and am eagerly awaiting (hoping?)
another release. Glad to finally find another Asia fan. I was beginning
to think that a couple of friends and I were the only ones...

I know this isn't exactly a DT topic, but are there many Asia fans out
there? With me, they rank right up there with DT, Rush, and Journey as

I've just meet DT there in Milan! I've got an AfterShow pass
(thanks to my biggest friend Barbara!)... so let's start:
first of all a big "HI!!!!!!" to all from Mike Portnoy, I've give
him the Polling results and he seems really interested...
We talk a lot about bootlegs (I've also give him "Majestic
Harmonies") and of course about Ytsejam! He's really cool!
I also got signed my Ibanez Flying V by John Petrucci!
The gig was cool, but James sang really bad... I think he has
really great problems with his voice... they played also
Deep Purple's PERFECT STRAGERS as cover... amazing...
JP solo was really great, first an acoustic part, and then
a "Plugged" solo a la Santana...
well... this was a great night for me... Sorry for my English!

Hello everyone, it's Babs. In response to Chuck's post regarding Aldo Nova since I'm an old peep (26) I will fill you in. He was one of those musicians who was known in the early 80's for being a guitarist and a singer at the same time. If my memory is clear I think that he was real popular around '81 or '82. His one hit wonder was "Life is Just a Fantasy" .... I think that he is a Canadian import, but I'm not exactly sure. I think that he had another hit around '85 or '86 called "Monkey on Your Back". Well that's all the info. on him that I have. Here's my question to you all Does anybody remember the band ASIA? It had Steve Howe and I think a member of Yes, etc. They were like a supergroup in '81. -BABS

Regarding all these "conventions:"
Seeing as I'm one of those (besides audio) video inclined persons, a thought struck me. (the lawsuit is pending)
Why don't people videotape each "convention" and mail a copy of the tapes (don't send originals, that would probably start fights) to someone, and edit them all together into a kinda YtseJammer Documentary of sorts?

I've thought about this a lot, and I still can't quite come up with a concrete definition. There seems to be many ways to look at it, one way is as you mentioned: Complex music with unexpected breaks, multiple time and key sigs, etc. This is not unique to prog music though, but also jazz and classical, so what else makes something prog? The fact that it is in a "rock" context?
Another way to look at it is this: a group could be condsidered prog if they are associated in some way to the 70s prog rock "movement" or a group stylistically similar to those vintage groups like ELP, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, groups that were sort of well known in the 70s to tried to break away from the mainstream pop trends. I know some people who look at prog music more along these lines (prog as more of the musicians attitude rather than a description of the music). In this sense Marillion would maybe fit in, a group with very simple (relatively) music but whose style kind of carries the spirit of early Genesis and maybe Pink Floyd.
I think the definition of progressive I like best is the idea that the musician(s) do no not limit themselves within certain mainstream or other "boundaries" (2-3 minute songs, formula song structures, same set of chords) but strive to incorporate ideas from other styles of music and experiement, not limiting themselves to established forms, but inventing new ones.

Well in the sense of the latter definition I think QR (particularly Rage for Order) were very innovative in developing a unique sound different from most other metal groups, with the operatic quality of the singer and tasteful use of synthesizers, and a unique "gothic" type of composition style. Maybe they are more derivative of groups that were influenced by then I realize but I'm not too knowledgeable of metal groups before them. They sound pretty original to me!

Aldo Nova was at one time (early eighties) considered one of the best up and coming guitarists around. He had a song in HEAVY rotation on the radio (Life is Just a Fantasy). He also has a killer guitar solo on Blue Oyster Cult's song "Take Me away". He faded from the limelight though, and I do not know where he went to.

What attracted me first to DT was when I was living in the LA area, a local station had PMU in heavy rotation, after hearing it, I was immediately impressed with their power and Honesty (YEAH, honesty, when you hear these guys sing, you know they are behind what they are singing 1000%). I went out and purchased the tape and was equally impressed with TTT and Metropolis (anyone have a nice abbreviation for this one??). Now I have a new band to look up to since Fish left Marillion!!! Just thought I would throw in "how I got here" anecdote. C-Ya Brian

Hell, yeah! Asia is one of my all time favorites! Funny, though, I don't think age means much (I'm only 19) and I love all of this stuff. I also like Journey, the Eagles, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Rush, Pink Floyd, Toto, Jefferson Airplane, Air Supply and a hell of alot more older groups. (I think it helped having older sisters who constantly listened to this stuff, too.)
