I just saw Telsa the other night in Milwaukee and they kicked some
serious ass. (Played a ton of stuff from the first album!) One thing they
do at their shows is not to go backstage at the end of the show and make
the crowd cheer and applaud to get them to play encore songs. They stay
right out on stage and ask the crowd if they want more and then get right
into it. DT and others should do this. It seemed like an ETERNITY waiting
for DT to come out and play Metropolis. The Telsa show was unique in that
Tommy Skoech(sp?) was sick so they were only a four piece that night. It
still sounded good with one guitar though. Frank just did double-duty in
    some places.
Ever wonder if DT would do a show if say John M. or John P. was
sick and couldn't play? Probably not....they'd cancel. At Tesla, I
thought a roadie might step in. I doubt any of DT roadies could pull off
a show on a moments notice. (BIG shoes to fill)
BTW....someone said that Trevor Horn went on to Asia. Geoff Downes
and Steve Howe went on to Asia, but not Trevor Horn. The other Asia
members were John Wetton and Carl Palmer. Now the only original member in
the group is Downes. Trevor Horn went on to produce Yes' 90215 album. He
was up for a Grammy this year....I think for producing an album by Seal.

Ya know, I bet you people think I don't have a life.

Anyway, that being said, I was thinking (seems I do too much of that,
considering I'm on break) about this discussion about how the bass guitar
and bass tones on AWAKE (token DT content) sound better on bigger speakers
than those little dinky ones on your boom box.

Well, of COURSE they will, don't be silly!

However, the problem gets to be this:

When mixing, one should use speakers of VARYING SIZES to see if they
reproduce everything with a high degree of accuracy.

If you go to a reputable studio (and I'm not talking about the guy next
door who's got a 4 track cassette hooked into his home stereo), I'll bet
you this yummy Bacon Double Cheeseburger I'm eating that 8 times out of
10 you'll see a minimum of 2 sets of speakers: one set will be the size of
rack unit home stereo systems (or BIGGER), and one set will be smaller - and
most likely, some sort of Yamaha NS's (Yamaha NS-10's are among the most
widely used professional studio monitors in this country, despite how
bright, thin, and fairly mediocre they are, for the express purpose
    stated above!) or similar speakers.

I'm 90% sure the low response frequency is around 85hz (someone correct
me if I'm wrong), where as a good set of home speakers can reproduce down
    to around 50hz.

Therefore, theoretically, if you can hear the bass on those dinky
NS-10's, you should be able to hear it on your crappy (or 1/2 decent)
    boom-box speakers.

Problem gets to be, if those NS-10's are BOOMY, chances are the mix will
be muddy, which is why studios have BOTH (at the very least). A friend
who built his studio from the ground up (and did a killer job) has 3 Sets
Of Monitors: the NS-10's, the home-sized speakers, and this MASSIVE assed
set of speakers that are like 5' tall that serve no other purpose than to
see what the mix will sound like at extremely loud volumes. =)

Brilliance at work, I tell ya!

The other thing is something that someone allured to a while back: The
    Fletcher-Munsing Curve.

The brief explanation of the F-M Curve is that when the overall VOLUME
(or Sound Pressure Level (SPL)) is lower, the low & high frequencies tend
to fall away, and become less audible. You can check this - turn off the
"loudness" button on your stereo, and start at a loud volume, slowly
turning it down. You'll hear more mids & lower highs. It's just one of
those physics things...which is why the "loudness" button was invented:
it gives your lows & highs a bit of a kick in the ass for when you're
    listening at lower volumes.

To account for this, engineers/producers will do mixes at a "normal"
listening volume - not too loud, not too soft; about average volume. When
they think they've got something good, they'll turn it up to a loud
level, and see what they've got. They'll turn it down, and see what
they've got. The whole idea is to find a happy medium - the mastering
people take care of making everything sound fairly consistant (volume &
EQ-wise) - so that it'll sound good in any stereo, in any town, in any
    room, to anybody.

Of course, this is damned near impossible. So, you find that happy
medium, and hope for the best. =)

All this is why things tend to kick your ass at loud volumes, and seem
    more powerful. (F-M Curve)

Anyway, Barron/Purdell did a nice job, overall. In fact, I hope DT chooses
    to work with them again.

Any other audio type questions/concerns? Lemme know. I'll do what I can.

I won't apologize for the length: these things take time to learn, and
years to fully understand & effectively apply.

-Hairball, that annoying bastard who thinks he knows something about
                    audio engineering...

    >Okay, now can anyone tell me what's the connection between Video Killed The
    Radio Star and Dream Theater?

This is my first post, and I hope that this works. Anyhow, I remember seeing
that video vividly. Had a lot of early eighties crap in it. I'll take a stab
at the connection between the two bands. The buggles sucked and Dream
Theater rock. They are perfect foils to each other. It could also be that
the buggles got a Good spot on eMpTyV, and Dream Theater gets no airplay.
Well, I did see them at 3:00 AM once. I really don't know. Oh yeah, there was
someone who wanted to know Dream Theater's arangement on stage. I went to
the Oct. 31 Columbus show, and it was as such: Far left, Derrik(spellling?)
    Sherrrrrrrrrrididian (major spelling) ; middle left, John Myung; middle;
James Labrie/ Mike Portnoy Right John Petrucci. This is from the audience's
point of view. These guys rocked the house. It kind of sucks here musically
because my roommates see the Offspring as complex music, but I have the
loudest stereo, so ha. If there are any Buggles fans out there, I didn't
mean to offend ya, just a little joke, after all, they have a guarenteed
place in history. That's more than DT has ( as of yet). The way things are
going with the rock and roll hall of fame, Rush will have a hard time
    getting inducted.

    Please e-mail me. Thanks!

BTW - anyone get the new Echolyn album? What do you think? I'm

Does anybody know what kind of volume pedal John uses?
What about his wireless unit? I know he uses a Triaxis
Mesa preamp and Mesa cabs. But any other specifics
about his equipment would be appreciated. By the way,
for you guitarists, is the Sans Amp any good? I priced
the Triaxis at around $1000-1200, and I heard the Sans
Amp can emulate the sound decently. Any suggestions
    for imitating the Mesa sound?

Aldo Nova released 4 albums as a solo artist ("Aldo Nova", "Subject",
"Twitch", and "Blood on the Bricks") and has done work with other
musicians. One that I happen to know of is Jon Bon Jovi. I'm not sure
what he's up to now though. Can anyone fill us in?

    Jeff

BTW, just to clear up one thing. The song referred to as "Life is Just a
Fantasy" is really titled "Fantasy" and is the first track on his first,
self-titled release recorded in 1981. Check it out, that album is excellent.

Greetings. YtseJam is a mailing list with class! No childish flames, no
bullshit (except for the dream band and nightmare band stuff).

Remember the Rick Henley thing I responded to? I've seen nothing but
positive feedback. Thank you all for displaying a sense of class and
maturity. (Mature music = mature fans)

And yes, I too am sick of that Dream Band/Nightmare band thing. But I
can't resist. The answer to that is as follows:

    Dream Band:

    Vocals: James LaBrie
    Keys: Kevin Moore/Derek Sherinian
    Guitar: John Petrucci
    Bass: John Myung
    Drums: Mike Portnoy

    That oughta shut y'all up!

I've heard it was getting kinda boring on YtseJam lately. But what can
we do? How's about that. Let's start a new thread. What can we do to
    make YtseJam more exciting?

VKtRS was written by The Buggles (Trevor Horne and Geoff Downed). They
were became members of Yes when Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson left the
band. This Yes setup produced only one album called Drama in 1980. DT
covered the song Machine Messiah from that album at their covers concert

It wasn't the way the song was *written*, but it was *intended*
to be cut off like it is. It's kind of hard to pull that off
live, but they come fairly close to doing so.

As an engineer, I really hate to analyze a song to death, but I do agree
that there are references to god. HOWEVER, anyone into satan/evil/etc,
could "create" references that seem to be in that vein. Just like "let
the light surround you" was given christian overtones by a 'jammer, here
are a few examples I've just thought of:

"Pull Me Under" - take me to hell
Mirror ("I spent so long trusting in you") - man given up on God
"Just when I thought I believed in you - same thing
I think it's time for a change - given up on God
Spinning the lies devised in my head - a bad dude
    etc,etc...

My point is that you can find any meaning you want in small segments.
You have to take the song as a whole. I think a lot of times DT uses
words more for the imagery or sound of them than the actual meaning of
the words, especially on I&W. By the way, I don't believe those quotes
that I came up with above; I was just trying to make a point.

    Will

P.S. The word is spelled r-i-d-i-c-u-l-o-u-s.

I used to like Tesla (the first album is one of my favorite, period.),
but the last two (although I did eventually buy the third) leave something
to be desired. I saw them in Sacramento @ Cal Expo (their hometown)
a few years ago and I was *greatly* dissapointed. The only decent parts
were the the acoustical set and the last song (Modern Day Cowboy, my fav).
When they did Heaven's Trail, intead of saying "kick ass" at the end,
they substitued "do crank"--- really low class, IMO. Maybye it was a
bad night for them, but I won't ever pay to see them again. Four other
people with my came to the same conclusion when we got back together
    after the show.

A few of my buddies went to The Boardwalk last month to see two of the
members on the club tour, and although they said they weren't too bad,
they were sure the boys were pretty jacked up. Sorry bastards.

Well, you think this isn't related to DT? Wrong! DT played a
show at The Boardwalk a few years ago (as did Fates), so there.

Yes, I am a Geoff Downes as well as an Asia fan.

    >Actually, isn't it Trevor Rabin? Also, whatever his last name is, he was
    >never a member of Asia. Only Downes went on to that fame.

No it wasn't Rabin in the Buggles. It WAS Trevor Horn. Both Downes and Horn
did play with Yes at one point (1 or 2 albums?) but only Downes went on to PLAY
in Asia. I believe Horn may have been involved in producing the first Asia
album (I'll have to go back and look at it to verify).

It's interesting that I commented in a prior digest that I wasn't all that
impressed with Steve Howe but I will admit I did like some of his work with
Yes, was least impressed with him in Asia but liked almost all of what he did
with GTR (you should try them if you like Asia).

To me Asia was a band of ex-prog types who wanted to cross over into more
accessible material. It had Downes and Howe from Yes, John Wetton from King
Crimson and U.K. etc. etc. (this guy's been around!) and Carl Palmer from ELP.
Got to see them on their first tour and they were great live! I found the
first two albums to be the best, thought they sucked when Greg Lake was in the
band and then wasn't all that impressed with later stuff even with Wetton back
    in the saddle.

    Sorry for the non-DT content.

    Mike Bahr,

<<<> Okay, now can anyone tell me what's the connection between Video Killed
    The
    > Radio Star and Dream Theater?

The buggles were the first band to appear on the network that got
Dream Theater its first exposure, and, as it happens, their most
successful song. Hows that for stretching! :)>>>

Actually, there's an even closer connection:

Geoff D. and Trevor H. joined Yes for their album "Drama." Then, of course,
the guitarist was Steve Howe who recently did the covers gig with DT! In
fact, they even played something from that album, a tune called "Machine
    Messiah."

Someone else mentioned that they thought it was Trevor RABIN instead of
Trevor HORN. Nope. Trevor Horn was in the Buggles and went on to produce acts
such as Yes, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, and Art of Noise. Trevor Rabin wrote
most of Yes' 90125 (which Horn produced) and is their current
    guitarist/producer.

    Hello everyone,

I just wanted to let you all know that Silent Man is now, and has
been for the past week, the champion of the Battle of the Bands thing on
a local radio station. It beat out Green Day to first win and since then
has beaten out even Boyz II Men to retain the title :-) Imagine that, in
midwestern Kansas people besides me are actually getting into Dream
    Theater :-) What's next.... anybody's guess :-)

I like to think they were more than just a supergroup... unfortunately
the stuff they did after their debut was never quite as successful
commercially. The original members (Howe, Downes, John Wetton on vocals,
Carl Palmer of ELP on drums) made 3 albums, and then all but Howe
returned for the Then & Now album, which had both new songs and
classics. Then Pat Thrall played guitars with the other three on the
Live in Moscow Cd, recorded in '91.
In 1992, though, Downes, Palmer, and Howe hooked up again, with the help
of Al Petrelli on guitars and John Payne on vocals for the Aqua album.
Then, last year, they released Aria, with the same cast, but no Howe, and
Michael Sturgis taking Palmer's place. Like i said before, these guys
rule in my book. I encourage everyone to check them out, if they already
haven't, especially the newer stuff. Aria can be found in the import
section, because it wasn't an official US release -- only in the UK.
Aqua is in ost record stores, though.

    > >that he did not continue playing with them on Aria (their latest),

    > I cannot find this anywhere... I just barely found Aqua and Astra in

Ok, like I said above, Aria was a UK release. Either check an import
place (or the import section somewhere), or if you still cannot find it,
I can give you the name of a guy who sells import cds over the net, and I
know that he has Aria, for 15.95 I think. I think it's well worth it --
    it's my favorite album.

I agree about Alpha. I think it was one of those 'our debut was so
successful, let's put out another one really fast' albums. "Open Your
Eyes" is a _great_ song, though. Some other ones are good, too, but not
as good as some of their other stuff.

    > >there? With me, they rank right up there with DT, Rush, and Journey
    > Yes! Another Journey fan. It appears our numbers are growing! (Heh)

But of course. Actually, I must give Journey credit for geting me hooked
on this music. I first listened to their Greatest Hits, and I have spread
out to other bands of the like from there, if you know what I mean.

    > Hell, yeah! Asia is one of my all time favorites! Funny, though, I

I couldn;t agree more. I am 19, as well, and I love most of teh
aforementioned groups. Although, I didn't have any older sisters who
constantly played the stuff... Toto is great. They have a fairly new
album too which is pretty good.

Yes, I too saw the first video on MTV - those were the good ole days. Now
keeping on this apparently useless but fun thread - who were the VJ's?
    Hint: there was four.

    Okay - DT/Asia connections:
Steve Howe played for Asia and then played with DT for a night. :)
I *LOVE* Asia - except for Aria. But I'm trying. Each day I force myself
to find something good - which mostly constitute the patches Geoff gets.
It was Trevor Horn, not Rabin, who was in The Buggles/Yes and who is now
    one of the hottest producers.

Everyone go see Patrick Moraz who is currently on a tour booked
completely by folks on the Internet. Musician types will be very
impressed and non musician types will get their money's worth!

Folks in Europe - ask the DT boyz what the plans are for a spring tour in
the U.S. for us. Outdoor venues? Opening or headlining? Will there be a
    tour? Thanx in advance.
