Thanks for all your definitions of prog-music.
I agree with you that it is very hard to describe this kind of music.
I think a good definition is that prog is music that wants to break
out of this 'normal'-music-thing that you can in the charts for
example and music that progresses album by album of a single band.
I agree too, that QR is on the edge of prog music just because their
every albums had different sounds, songstructures and so their albums
progress.
I first was a little surprised when I read that statement that DT is a
semi-prog band. But now if I think about the songs I think I can com-
prehend what you mean. There are songs which are very prog (Metropolis,...)
and others what are less prog (The silent man, ...) in the meaning
of complicated songwriting. But when I look at the unique song-
structures they create I would say they are very prog. Because there
is no band who creates the songs like DT does. And their music
progresses too because every album they did 'til now sounded a little
different in all meanings. Not to mention the breaks and timings
and and and...
Just MHO.

Subj: Cool Music on the Howard Stern Show
A while back, it was noted that Howard was playing THE MIRROR as intro music leading back from commercial breaks. Recently, I heard him also playing 'I Don't Believe in Love' by Queensryche. Howard let that one play quite a long time, then asked "This rocks, who is this? {Queensryche} Queensryche, eh? They sound really good, I think I'm going to have to get into them. What is the name of this album, Fred? Operation Mindcrime? Hmmm, well, very good..."
It was nice to see so much 'plug' given to QR on the show!
Subj: The ytsejam convention
Just quickly want to add my 0.02 that I strongly feel this event should take place on Long Island. I think that is the best locale for a couple of reasons. All these people in here touting "The convention should be in Duluth, MN -- The convention should be in South Bend, IN -- how bout a ytsejam convention in Topeka, KS... need to get a friggin life. DT has no association with any of the places recommended to date on this list, sans possibly playing there on one of their tour dates. The history of Majesty/Dream Theater lies on the Island, and since they live there as well, that locale would probably better serve the possibility of them actually attending this soiree.
I've got to send my personal kudos to BABS for getting this together -- bravo! As to those people who were miffed about BABS arranging for a hotel rate down on the island, once again, get a life people. The person who noted "Gee, I thought that maybe 25 or so of us could just hang out at someones house for this ... you know, make a party of it and drink some beers, etc." is an IDIOT! Grow the fuck up ... I suspect you're not noting from your high school CS dept. user account, so, if you're an adult, act like one. Thank you. I think a more realistic approach to this, should $$$ be a concern, is asking ytsejam members who plan on attending if they would like to share lodging/traveling costs. Most hotel rooms can squeeze in 4 people comfortably. Just a suggestion...I thought the keg party one was rather sophomoric.
If indeed the event is scheduled for 16 JUL, I won't be there -- have a conflicting convention to attend that weekend in Charlotte, NC (and yes, I'll be paying for my own hotel room). Have funs, anyways...

Subj: I&W music book
Just picked this up last night. The notation, esp. the TAB section, are MUCH imporved over the transcriptions which have appeared in mags like GFTPM (which had some really stupid positions recommended via TAB for TTT). Between live viewings of JP playing and videos I have, I have a good idea of where the main lines on I&W are played in position, and this book definitely reflects that.

I have been thinking DT's track "Pull Me Under", exspecially the end of it. It sounds like it stops too early. When I heard it first time I thought that there is something wrong with my cd-player or cd itself, but no. Is there some explanation for it? Then about 6:00 on Awake. I don't understand why some people don't like it(only with a good reason) I think it is the best possible way to start the album!!!!!!
And then a bit non DT staff....Did anyone hear QR on MTV last night. I think it was Ray Coke's Most wanted show....Oh lord how the sounds were great!!!!

I remember reading a mention of Asia before. Have you heard "Aria" yet? I got the impression from the earlier mention that somebody thought "Aqua" was the most recent album. "Aqua" is very good, but "Aria" just blows it away...

On a more relavent note, where might a person get a copy of some of Magellan's work. From all the talk, I have to believe this is a band I would like. Also, if any of you saw Dream Theater last fall in the Twin Cities, I would like to know if you thought they were a little unruly to their opening act, I Mother Earth (spelling?). Some friends who saw the show thought they were rude, and I find that hard to believe. When I saw them in Milwaukee, they seemed well behaved. Mike Portnoy came out and did a killer timbale/latin perc. solo during IME's last song, but otherwise DT let them have the stage. Enough for now. Later.

Well, it looks like I am going to become a regular voice on this digest (with more DT related material, I promise). I was in High school (uh oh, now MY age is showing, I think I have most of YOU beat though) when Asia hit the road, they sold out the Santa Monica Civic auditorium BEFORE their album even hit the streets. I saw this show and Geoff Downes was a virtual show stealer (he was on a second level built on some scaffolding, basically raised above the stage about 10 feet), and was simply awesome. This band was the 'Prog' genre's answer to pop. It was better than most pop, but not as intricate and lengthy as most prog stuff. This band's existance seemed to inspire the reunion of ELP, and forced Asia to splinter (giving us the GTR effort, which I agree was Great, still popish, but more guitar/prog oriented than Asia). Anyway, this was the way it was way back then.
Next subject: DT (can you believe it??)
On my way in today, I was listening to IAW, and tried to do so in a way that I could gauge my reaction for this digest. I observed the following: PMU creates this maelastrom-like feeling; like some larger than life energy is "spinning around me," and then all of a sudden I get caught up in this maelstrom, seeing this image and then that image, and then finally, after becoming enlightened (as far as the song is concerned, that is) facing the power of the force (easier to type than maelstrom), and eventually actually becoming empowered by it, realizing that this force is the way of life, and if you want to get something out of it, you must face up to it, and persevere. Like a trial by fire like situation and time is running out. I know that the words do not support most of this, but these are the images/feelings the song produces in me.
Next, Please people, is there really ANY need to slam ANY band??? I mean really, we are here to discuss DT and the likes, not bad mouth other bands. Besides, with my eclectic taste I like a lot of the bands that are attracting the flames, and I feel obliged to defend them. Please allow these bands (which I need not remind you that some of these bands are WAY more successful than DT is, which means NOTHING in relation to talent) to do their thing, and lets talk about bands WE LIKE. (to the person who thinks NIN sucks: musically speaking, I am not even sure if it can be considered 'music' but it IS art, and VERY expressive, original, and in some cases very moving, try listening to Wish from the Broken Cd, VERY violently expressive; Art is interpretive, lets remember that lots of artists are not even appreciated until well after they are dead and buried, these artists are true to their vision, if you do not get it, tough shit, let those of us that do.. enjoy it without having to listen to others who do not).
There, I hope I have not made TOO many enemies, but I really think the negativity has no place here.

Concerning the Petrucci gear <as well as some Myung gear, if anyone's interest- ed> I have several articles from various magazines giving detailed descriptions of each of their rigs. The one question you specifically asked about was the wireless that the Johns use, and that would be a SONY. Actually, the same one that EVH uses. They both formerly used Samson Stage 22, but the 22 has been dis-continued, so they probably were worried about have a "dinosaur" wireless systems. <Oddly enough, James LaBrie still uses a Samson from the Stage series it may be the non-diversity Stage 2, but not likely.> The gear knowledge preceding comes from such publications as GftPM and a relatively new mag called GUITARSHOP. Guitar Shop is IMHO the *best* guitar publication out there. If anyone would like any more info, or to post exerpts from these articles to the list, just ask.

When I started recommending I&W to my friends on a local BBS, I got email asking if there was something wrong with their copy of the CD.
The fact of the matter is, they end the song right where "stop" was pushed on the tape unit.

I don't think so...I know Horn did some Co-production with Yes on 90125, but, I believe that Mike Stone (who worked also with Journey & Whitesnake) produced that particular album.

Well, hey - Wetton & Howe were at each others throats. They couldn't stand each other, so, that's why Lake came into the band. Howe left when Wetton was convinced to come back, and he did the same when Howe came in for Aqua.
And, I personally LOVE Astra. True, many songs are very depressing lyrically, but, it's a very good, often overlooked album.

I don't know: I really like that album. There's very little Asia's done that I don't like.

Journey! I started listening to them in 1981, and went on to buy every Journey album in existance (at least the ones put out by Columbia related records), except "In The Beginning," a 'best of' the early, pre-Perry days - back when they were a progressive/acid rock band. I swear, that's the truth!

Third, Asia.
Wow, I shouldn't be suprised that there are Asia fans on this list. I like Asia although I have not heard much of their newer stuff. This is what I know. The original lineup was Geoff Downes, John Wetton, Carl Palmer and Steve Howe. On tour of their second album, Alpha, the lineup changed Greg Lake replaced Wetton on bass. I have the Asia in Asia concert and Lake was awful. Steve Howe did a live version of *Sketches in the Sun* (which later appears on the GTR album) Well, Wetton came back and Howe was replaced with Mandy Meyers (of Krokus fame) and the third album was called Astra. Then they have seemed to have dropped off of the face of the planet for a while. About 2 or 3 years ago they put out an album called *Then and Now* It covered their previous hits and a couple of new ones. The lineup for that remained as Wetton, Downes and Palmer. I wasn't too impressed with it. I have recently seen Aqua on sale but for the most part, Asia stuff hasn't been too plentiful in the bins at the record store. Steve Howe joined forces with Steve Hackett (Genesis) and formed GTR. Geoff Downes produced one of the songs off of that album. The prementioned *Sketches in the Sun* is on that ablum. An awesome song! Now, I gotta go and dig out my copy of Asia's first album and spin it on the CD player...

Yup, I'd agree with all that. Damn good concert it was too (couldn't resist having a boast! Sorry :)
On the subject of Trevor Rabin (using the Yes connection as a suitable starting point) I really like the work he's done with Yes. I'm not that familiar with Big Generator but 90125 and Talk were, IMHO, excellent. But as for the person who said that stuff about Steve Howe, you were way off. You should have seen him play at the covers gig. His hair may be silver and his features somewhat wisened (or whatever the phrase is) but his guitar playing was up there with Johns. I imagine this is partly because he was playing stuff he wrote, but it was all spot on.
