For those of you fans interested in this thread...
When I hear surrounded I think of an open field on a foggy day.
Metropolis, too, reminds me of a futuristic city. Actually, the bells in
the beginning of the song remind me of the play Les Miserables for some
reason.
When I hear LSOAD and SDV, I think of being at home on a cold winter's
night with snow falling outside. From LSOAD I get that feeling with the
quote, "the chill of winter's darkness sits quietly" and from SDV, I get
it when I hear that crack in the song around :54 seconds.
LTL reminds me of the Spanish group the Gipsy Kings when John starts
playing the acoustic guitar around 5:30.
The beginning of Status Seeker reminds me of the movie, "Karate Kid".
I don't know...there's a part in the movie that sounds very similar to
the intro of this song.
The intro to Innocence faded reminds me of Beverly Hills 90210. This
intro would work on that show.

about posting problems (as in, their dtdigest 730 had a truncated copy of

get these damn results available there.

I have just listened to 'A Kick Into A Dream' in it's entirety. I know I'm a
bit behind on this--my local boot shop just got it this week. There must have
been quite a bit of EQ monkeying done before the discs were pressed. The
instruments sound _really_ good for an audience recording. I was surprised, in
particular, by how well the cymbals came across. The big let down for me was
the quietness of the vocals. I suspect that this was the way the show really
sounded. When I saw them in Chicago, James was nearly inaudible. I've also
seen comments to this effect in several Ytsejam reviews.
One other thing about Kick--I would like to take the indidual with the 'musical'
whistle that felt he had to pepper every quiet moment of the show with his
atonal gems and fit him with a permanent gag. Oh well...
Even though this isn't the greatest boot, and I'm sure better ones will come
from the shows in Europe, I'm glad that there's a record of Derek's early days
in the band.

Those who like Asia should also check out U.K., another "combo group." It
seems that some prog musicans just got together all from different bands
and make their own. Well, U.K. is one of them, and they're awesome.
Dream Theater even played a cover of one of their songs at the cover concert!
I have U.K.'s self entitled album, which is quite good. It features Allan
Holdsworth on guitar (this is is awesome! You should hear his solos, a
must for any guitar player!) Eddie Jobson on keyboards and electric
violin (this thing is really cool) John Wetton (of King Crimson fame) on
bass and vocals, and Bill Bruford on drums. (of Yes, King Crimson, every
other prog-band in the world, etc...)
This has some of the most original music I've heard in a long time.

Hey, I RESENT that!!! I live in Duluth MN. It's a mighty fine town, I
do not think it is a place for THE Ytse Jam convention, but we might
be able to host a local one if there are enough people in the
surrounding area. I would really like to see the Long Island
convention take place. I haven't said much about the Ytse Jam
convention issue yet, but it is a great idea. But as far as my
attendance goes, I am still alittle unsure whether I could make it.
I was just out in Long Island last November, it was a nice place and
would like to go back. I attempted to gather some people before the
DT show in Minneapolis. (Remmember that Brian ;-) ) Unfortunately not
as many people as expected showed up. But it was fun any way.
For a MIDWEST regoinal convention, I think Minneapolis area would
serve quite well. Well we might have to make it an UPPER MIDWEST
convention. I think the idea of one National convention (LONG ISLAND)
and then various regoinal ones would be an excellent idea. Of course,
Everyone would be welcome at any of them.
BTW, excellent idea BABS.
The last time I was in Long Island (actually NYC) Duluth MN was also
ripped on. It was at a musical, afterwards I introduced myself to the
actor. I said, "Hi, I'm Nathan Bradley. Just flew in from Duluth this
morning." He thought that it was rather funny.....

Surprisingly enough, I actually have a question about DT,
specifically about Mike Portnoy. This would probably be best answered by

cymbals Mike used on Awake. I'm probably going to buy one soon and I love
the way they sounded on Awake. If anyone has a Modern Drummer laying
around with this info or is a big enough DT fan to know this off the top
of their head, I would appreciate it. I know he's endorsed by Sabian

I just wanted to know if any Jammers have talked to the band or
otherwise heard of any US tour dates for this summer. Better yet, when do

eMpTyV," "worst band," etc. that I miss out. Hopefully I'll see some of

To Babs: Keep working on the Ytsecon. Wherever it is I'll be there and
I'm sure there's a whole bunch more who don't give a rat's ass about the
planning details but will be there too. Keep up the good work!
Oh, and is it just me or are there other jammers out there who have a

The album is all guitar and guitar-driven sounds and no keyboard playing. Of course there is also Bass, Drums, and Vocals.
Although it sounds like a sure-fire winner, I was very disappointed in this album and felt that it is the worst thing Hackett or Howe have done. I noticed that someone on Ytesjam listed it as being in his Top Three albums ever. To each his own.
BTW, the CD is out of print, so if you see it used for under 10 bucks, you should buy it. If you don't like it you could easily sell it for what you paid.

Thanks for your input on NIN! The reason why NIN turned me off was because my friend lent me 'Fixed', and the repetitiveness really turned me off. Well, he lent me another CD of theirs. Well, kids, Spruce Street Revival started recording today. Things are sounding okay, but, it's gonna be hard to tell until I get in there and really start mixing. The kick sounds really good for a change, and I think the snare is something I can live with. Very 70's sounding. =)
The only problem thus far is the fact that I've only got 8 Tracks to work with. The track layout works like this: All Other Rythym Lead Bass Vocals Vocals/Other Snare Kick Drums/Cymbals guitar guitar Guitar Shit... 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
I don't wanna hear about sub-mixing drums to DAT. Blech. Yuck. =)
Anyway, as silly as that may seem, it *generally* works. I need that kick/snare separation. Has to be there. The room mikes? Eh, well, ya kinda wing it, and watch the levels. I'm actually better at fixing stuff that's f**ked up than actually coping with engineering. =) (Yes, I admit it, I'm an idiot. Sue me, don't listen to a word I say from here on out.)
I'll let anyone who's interested know when we're done. We cut some basics today - because I'm the bassist and I'm busy engineering, we do drums & rythym guitar 1st, then add everything else. This kid across the hall thought that our set up was "silly," and that I "should be in the room with the band recording." Bahahaha...yeah, okay, whatever.
The sign on the door of the room I converted into the control room was changed from:
SPRUCE STREET REVIVAL CONTROL ROOM & PLEDGE PIT
to:
SPRUCE STREET REVIVAL SILLY CONTROL ROOM & PLEDGE PIT
Yes, we're doing this in a frat house. I should point out, however, that this is one of the few frats where guitars outnumber people 2 to 1. =) And there's 4 bands that have members in this house. No jocks here. ;)
Anyway, so this is somewhat relevant, I got some mail regarding the bass issue again. The question was something along the lines of "Would a Chris Squire-esque bass tone work for Dream Theater?"
And, the answer to that question: Did it work on WDADU? =)
Too thin. Metal needs a thicker bass tone. <shrug> I still contend that Baron/Purdell did an excellent job. Prater did alright. We won't talk about WDADU. =)
Okay. The other semi-relevant thing: MIKE BAHR! My sh*t will be in the mail on monday. Hope you enjoy the "picture." (You'll understand when you get it...hehe...)

They didn't have Squire-esque bass on WDADU... you see, you can actually HEAR Squire-esque bass lines... :) Never have I heard Myungs bass sound has thick, rich, and full as Squires... I'll still maintain that is's both the problem of the people producing (we need Eddie Offord!) and Myung's shyness.

The Wall is on Leftoverture.... all songs on that album are good. I also have Point of Know Return, and from what I've heard of it, all the songs are equally just as good. Both highly recommened. While your at it, try U.K. They are more progressive than Kansas, but they are quite alike. (Just substitute the violin for an electic violin.)
