I was at the Minneapolis show last fall that Mr. Gundry was talking
about. I don't think the members of DT treated I Mother Earth badly. It
was IME's last night as the opening act and you know how that goes. The
headlining band ALWAYS has fun with the opener and does all kinds of crap
to embarass them, but believe it or not, it's all in fun. I Mother
Earth, IMO, was a very enjoyable band. I have yet to buy any of their
CD's (Lots of DT imports on order lately) but I definitely plan to soon.
At the Minneapolis show, DT started in on them when Mike started walking
across the stage under a sheet that said "Canada or Bust" on it. Not
long afterwards, the doors of the dressing rooms opened a bit and all
kinds of vegetables came flying out onto the guys of IME. This went on
till the end of IME's set. The last song IME did turned into a jam with
members of DT. Derek, Mike, and John P. came out to jam with them and
needless to say, I was in heaven. Near the end of the last song, all the
guys in DT got hold of a bunch of cans of silly string and proceeded to
fill the stage with it. You literally could not see the members of IME
or thier instruments when DT got done with them. It took a LONG time to
clean all the string off the stage after that but DT finally took the
stage and played and EXCELLENT show. They all came out wearing I Mother
Earth T-shirts as a sort of tribute to their openers. Wow...that was
rather long-winded. Getting back to my point, I don't think DT treated I
Mother Earth badly at all. You just gotta understand what happens in
those situations...it happens all the time.

Hello!
RUMOR RUMOR RUMOR
-----------------
This is something I heard in Philly last Friday night from a guy in a
record store who spent the afternoon talking with Sony executives (he is
braver and has more free time on his hands than I <grin>). Right now
Dream Theater is planning to do a headlining tour during the summer. I
know this because it is a large possibility that Echolyn will open for them.
I really cannot see why this match-up would happen (as one of my friends
later stated, "Mike, it is your wet dream becoming reality." <Grin>)
since the images that the two bands convey is totally different. Both
are tremendous live and neither would show up the other in performance.
Related Music Ravings
---------------------
On the ytsejam digest this is generally not a problem, but several people
are posting to a.r-n-r.m.p and complaining that they bought the Echolyn
CD "As the World" and that it is not heavy and therefore sucks.
Whatever, but I would just like to warn people on this list that if you
pick up this CD you will be buying some very complex, well orchestrated
music with 2 and three part vocal harmonies, tremendous group playing
(all of the band members are classically trained and excellent musicians)
and there are some harder songs. This is not metal but Prog-Rock. I
feel better now that this disclaimer is up. If you like Prog-Rock as
well as Prog-Metal I highly recommend this disk. I saw them live on
Friday and they always put on a show as good as Dream Theater and often
better since they have three vocalists and don't have to rely totally on
one person's voice. James has one of the best voices in metal but he
gets burned out and hoarse after an intense tour, which only knocks him
down a couple of pegs against other metal vocalists).
Cover Concert
-------------
Has a tape surfaced for this? I heard someone posted about this but they
must have been assaulted by mail. I'd be willing to three for one trade
for it. I have a lot of Floyd, Rush, Dream Theater, Yes, Echolyn, The
Who, and Marillion.

Mike

Says in big letters, "PRODUCED & ENGINEERED BY MIKE STONE FOR MIKE STONE
ENTERPRISES, LTD." on both "Asia" and "Alpha."
Also, Mike co-produced "Frontiers" and "Escape," with Journey's live sound
guy, Kevin Elson.
Mike also co-produced "Whitesnake" and "Slip of The Tounge."
As for 90125, I know a slew of people worked on it. From consequent
discussions on it with YES-heads, I believe what happened was that they
weren't all that happy with what they were getting, so, they called in
Trevor Horn. Apparently, he deserves a lot more credit than what he was
given.
Anyway, I don't know what I was being Bzzz'ed on, but, there it all is.

Actually, you can hear the bass on WDADU. It just sounds like a
well-executed fart.
And, IMO, I think earlier Squire bass tones were very thin.
Has nothing really to do with Myung's quiet nature. If you've
stood in front of his amp at a live show, (which is where I always seem
to end up) you'll hear how thin his overall tone is. Sure, there's bass
in it, but, there's also a lot of upper mids.
And again, people: you're comparing two different genres of
music! What works in one situation may not work in another.
I've never heard a Yes record with guitar tones as heavy as
Petrucci's. Granted, Rabin's are heavier, generally, than Howe's, but, I
mean, really! Can you imagine Yes with that kind of guitar tone? It
wouldn't happen.
Technology has advanced itself to the point where it's damn near
impossible to get a bad recording, UNLESS you don't know how to use what
you've got effectively.
From what someone else posted, WDADU sounds an awful lot like the
band was stuck producing the record themselves. The same thing happened
to my friends in a christian thrash band called Sacrament. (Went to H.S.
with the bassist) I bought a copy of their album from Erik (bass), and
listened to it. It sounded horrible. Being the friend that I am, I asked
him what happened. "The guy didn't do anything. We had to engineer &
produce it ourselves." What a bastard.
Prater's shortfall came when he decided to make a straight-ahead
heavy metal album. He's not a bad producer - he did a great job on Glen
Burtnick's "Heroes & Zeros," and a 1/2 decent job on both Firehouse
records, if you like triggered kicks & snares.
And for the umpteen-billionth time, I honestly believe that B/P
(not spelling their names out again) tried very hard to make a competent
record, and succeeded, for the most part.
But, comparing Yes & DT? Sure, Yes is an obvious influence, but,
Yes was never influenced by the likes of Metallica & Anthrax. =)
Eh. The one thing that sticks out in my mind is what Mike told
me: "We never set out to be a progressive band....Rush was the common
denominator, but, we listen to all kinds of stuff."
Whatever.
Okay, that's it, I'm outta here. Later.

I had to get into this.
I'm a big fan of Asia and it's interesting to see what albums people like. I
was very surprised to see that someone actually though "Aria" was better than
"Aqua." Personally, I though "Aria" was very weak, no substance. "Aqua"
ain't the greatest album, but there are some very good songs on it (fantastic
cover). I am very partial to "Asia," "Alpha," and "Live Mockba." That live
CD is great, even though Steve Howe isn't there. The solo on "Time Again"
suffers. The two Crimson tunes on there are awesome.
I also like the GTR CD. Max Bacon's voice isn't real strong but he does and
OK job. I compare him to John Elefante when Steve Walsh left Kansas. Good,
but not quite there. Some of the lyrics on "GTR" are a little weak, but the
guitar work is what to listen to. On a Steve Hackett note: Doesn't he have
a "best of" CD out as an import? I thought I saw it at a record convention.
If anyone has any info on this, please let me know. Thanks.
The U.K. stuff is pretty cool, too. I have the first one, "U.K.," and I like
it a lot. "Alaska" is a very cool song. It's great for a completely dark
room late at night. Spooky, kind of like Pink Floyd's "Echoes." I've been
meaning to get "Danger Money" and "Night After Night" for a while now. This
was a great supergroup, too bad they didn't stay together longer. BTW, what
the hell it John Wetton up to these days?
A DAB OF DREAM THEATER MATERIAL...
I'm still looking for the "Caught in a Web" CD single. Does anyone have any
info on where I could get it? Also, what is the track listing? Thanks!!

layouts of their sponsored drummers. Mike's rig is included in this

Otherwise I'll keep looking for the copy that I have laying around.
..And yes, his cymbal sound is awesome on Awake.
Concerning the Christian content of Dream Theater's music:
Does anyone think that Metropolis is about the three battles in the book of
Revelations? It may sound like a stretch, but I'm not the first person to
see a resemblance. Several other DT fans have pointed this out to me on
separate occasions.

Hi Chris,
I have all of Kansas' albums and/or CD's. I would strongly suggest Song for
America (their 2nd), Masque (3rd) Leftoverture (4th) and Point of No Return
(5th). Two for the Show is a live compilation of some of the above and also
very good. You won't find them to be a lot like DT because their style was a
bit lighter. There was more orchestration in their music because they had
additional instrumentation. There was 2 guitars: Rich Williams and Kerry
Livgren (who used to switch from guitar to keys even in the same song), keys
(Steve Walsh), Bass (Dave Hope) Drums/Percussion (Phil Ehart) and Violin
(Robbie Steinhart).
They also did a later album that I like a lot with a different line-up from
above. It's called Power and features Steve Morse (from the Dregs). By then
the violin was gone and the material was even more guitar focused.
William Wright writes:
>> Howe joined forces with Steve Hackett (Genesis) and formed GTR. Geoff Downes
>What does GTR stand for, and what kind of band are they?
I don't think GTR stands for anything, however, I believe it was an
abbreviation for GUITAR. They are a prog-rock band, not as heavy as DT but
very good. Guitar and vocal harmonies and great arrangements. I think they
had two albums but only their first one was released in the States (could
someone confirm this?).

I just picked up the new Warrant album "Ultraphobic" and it is
incredible!! Now, before you skip over this message there is a reason I'm
posting my praise for the album on here. Warrant has definitely changed
their sound like you wouldn't believe, which is probably due to their new
guitarist Rick Steier and new drummer James Kottak. They now use really
cool time changes and harmonies which fans of DT will appreciate. This
message is aimed more at the people on this list who like both hard rock
and DT: get this album!!! If you've written Warrant off as a dead 80s
hair-band, this should definitely make you think twice. The songs range
from the really heavy "Undertow" and "Followed" to the Beatlesque sound
of "Stronger Now" with just the right amount of old Warrant as in "Sum of
One" and "High." I can't stress enough how much this album breaks the
"Cherry Pie" stereotype which seems to have plagued this band. I know there is
at least one Warrant fan on this list, so I'm hoping there are others as
well. I just hope that my cries have not fallen on deaf ears. This is
YTSEJAM after all, where people are supposed to be more open-minded, at
least as far as music goes. Thanks for listening and if you really,
really, really hate Warrant, so be it. I just think you're missing out on
one hell of a killer band and new album.

Regarding Tesla, I am going to defend them also. They have been my favorite band for 7 or 8 years now since Mechanical Resonance. Check them out if you haven't already.
I'm a drummer and I'm not going to lie and say that I can play any DT songs. Has Mike been featured in Modern Drummer magazine yet? For that matter has DT in general been featured in any?

Hey Ytsejam cowboys...
Just found Live at the Marquee today, so now I have every official DT release (except a couple of the singles). I love it. James is a crazy man. Killing Hand live kicks. Not to mention the cover is awesome.
Anyway, one question has arisen - does John P. use serious delay (~300-400ms) on the guitar entrance in "Surrounded" on the studio version? I noticed that kind of delay was going on on LatM when listening to it on a decent stereo. On my personal CD player, however, I notice nothing. Just wondering...

HMM... I think I have an idea why you say this... have you heard the new remastered CDs??? The bass line is incredibly thick on the new remastered albums. Check out Close to the Edge... woah. :) If I had subwoofers, I wouldn't need an air conditioner, I'd just play Close to the Edge all day. :) And keep in mind, I have fairly cheap 300 dollar stereo... it ain't high-fi, but you can sure hear Squires bass loud a clear.

Hmmm. Well, have you heard Queensryche's _Promised Land_ ?
You can hear the bass really good. It has heavy guitar. It has vocals. It has special effects and shit. It has drums.
QR has the same type of line up as DT and you can hear the bass really good, and it has heavy loud guitar. Why can't DT do this? Shit, the bassist in QR sounds like Squire to me with his loud and fat bass sound.
You could say that QR's Promised Land is "Yes meets Dream Theater"
I'll probably get flamed for saying that but It's my opinion...

They were recording their second album when they broke up. If anyone bootlegged the San Diego concert, one of the "new" songs was premiered here (according to Max Bacon). I think it was called "The Fighter" or "The Boxer" (it was a long time ago).
Hackett has released a couple of interesting albums since then.

I'm after the same thing you were when you posted this message and I was just wondering if you'd received any response about this (specifically about drum transcriptions of Portnoy's stuff). In response to your message (I know it's a little late!), there's some guy in Hackensack, New Jersey (called Howard something) who actually does this. I have one of the albums he transcribed (Metallica's "...And Justice for All") and it was really very nicely done. I thought he had good notation, he included an interview he did with Lars Ulrich (according to Howard, Lars even helped him out with the transcribing). Anyway, I recommend him. The only problem is that he's done transcriptions for a limited number of bands (Metallica, Guns 'N' Roses, L.A. Guns, and a couple of others I can't remember). I know because he sent me his catalog. Anyways, if you'd like a list of drummers he's covered, or you want get a catalog for yourself, e-mail me or (if you have a copy of Modern Drummer handy), try checking in the classifieds section of MD. His phone number should be there under the boldfaced word "Drumscriptions."
Please let me know if you hear of any Dream Theater drum transcriptions. I posted about the same thing you did sometime last fall, and got no response. I'm hoping maybe things have changed. Thanks.

*PLEASE* don't send unsub requests to the list--they will be processed much more slowly than the unsub requests that are sent properly (they are done automatically). They are also slower than sending a request in to me, so *please* don't send unsub requests to the whole list.
For those who don't know how to unsub (and who want to), send:
unsubscribe ytsejam
to ytsejam-request@arastar.com with a subject of "asdf". If you get an error message back, send mail to ytsejam-owner@arastar.com with a subject that includes the word unsubscribe in it.
Thanks!
