The song is "Come Together". Definitely a weird version - I still
like the Aerosmith cover of it better............

This is going to be long as hell. These were posted by both Michael
Opstall and Mike Burstin, I think from the same source. I listened to the
vocal audition from 1990, as well as a live performance with LaBrie on
vocals, and I noticed some words that need to be changed. Hopefully
someone can fix this on whatever source these lyrics were originally taken
from.
* - what it sounded like by John Hendricks
# - what it sounded like by James LaBrie
* and # will both be used if both vocalists seem to be saying the same
thing. Or, if I heard something different from each vocalist, or if they
are both completely indecipherable! Keep in mind that Hendricks sang it in
1990, and LaBrie in 1993(?), so the band might have decided to change a
few words here and there, or LaBrie might have felt the need to change one
or two words live...

This is for Mike, subconscious man.....
I think I speak for a couple of other people as well when
I say thanks and all that, but I was wondering, if its
possible just to make a quick synopsis/story behind each of
the songs. I was letting a friend of mine listen to the CD,
and Wanted Dead or Alive was on. The question about the chipmunk
voice came up and I was like "duh........i dunno - i think the
band may have been really drunk during a recording session or
something"....pretty original, i know, but it would be kewl to
know a couple tidbits behind each song..............
Thanks againm Mike, great job, etc.

Well, let's see...
I think it was Bafu who posted about the "songs within songs." Just to help
you out a bit: In Voices, when the recitation starts <"...I dont wanna be
here..."> about midway through it you can start t hear the keyboard playing
the main Erotomania theme. There's more, but I can't think of anything right
now.

I think I've finally figured out what the hell is going on rhythmically in
The Mirror!
In the very beginning they're doing a 3 against 4. What I would call,
superimposing 3/4 over 4/4. The Guitar and Bass are in 3/4 at about quarter
= 80. The Drums are in 4/4 at about 104. Keys come in and they sync up in
4/4 at 80. Then it feels like the drums go into a double-time feel (which
becomes the actual tempo) and the two 16ths and an 8th ryhthm gets sorta
turned around (becomes two 16ths a 16th rest and a 16th). Then the guitar
comes in with the melody and what was a double-time feel becomes real
double time (new tempo, about 160). Then they do the intro backwards. They
sync up at half tempo then go back to the 3 against 4 when the vocals come
in!! All within the first 1'30"!! And LaBrie sings over it! To explain my
concept of 3/4 superimposed over 4/4, if you listen to the drums, Portnoy
is clearly playing in 4/4 (bass on 1 & 3, snare on 2 & 4). But if you
listen to the guitar/bass, they're playing in 3/4 so beat one for each of
them lines up. The drums are proportionally faster than the guitar/bass.
This sorta blows my mind. I understand it fine but you just don't hear this
from a rock band, or much from anyone else (hey Anthony, a real world
example of polyrhythms :). If anyone wants to dispute this or back me up,
I'd like to hear it. I'm pretty psyched that I finally got it.

In response to Hairball's "On The Subject of Subjects" I just want to say
Right On! I agree with everything you said man. Except the thing about
hearing a band for the first time. I saw Cinderella when they opened for
David Lee Roth on his first tour. I had never heard them and I was
expecting them to be good. They sucked and never got better. OTOH, the
first time I heard Power Windows, I didn't really like it too much but it
came to be my favorite Rush album until Counterparts.

No flames. I understand your dilemma. Sometimes we end up
getting crap music that we don't like (even though I am not referring
to Kev's work as crap). I happen to enjoy Kev's works, and they have
inspired me to write some interesting piano pieces of my own. But
please don't refer to this as dance, or R&B, or acid be-bop music.
That kind of stuff is for (as I call them) the ECPOA. (Ethnically
Challenged People of America). Any music with the same riff the
whole way through and lyrics like "Knockin 'da boots" is for the
ECPOA, people who have no idea what real music is. Kevin's music has
intricate melodies and equally involving lyrics that set a mood.
(Yes, he does say fuck every once in a while, but who doesn't). Just
give them a few more listens or give them to someone who will like
them. Don't just chuck 'em in the trash.
Thank you,

I'd just give him the main piano riff to EVE. The riff has a
temdemcy to repeat itself every 30-40 seconds or so. I love it. I
can put the song on repeat and never realize when it starts over
again, I mellow with it so well. Eve reminds me of a song Marty
Friedman would have written for introduction. (As I am severely
lacking, I have yet to hear ACOS. I think it's the only song of

I will let everyone know as soon as I get an answer.

This has been my second post today which is a record compaired to my two post in the
past eight months!
In Y-Jam #803 I noticed the post:
<<Robert Devereux: You're partly right. The first chord in "Erotomania"
matches the first keyboard chord in 6:00, starting at "Six o'clock and a
siren kicks him from a dream." They are exactly alike. However, on
"Erotomania," Kevin continues with a progression that is only found in
"Erotomania." That second chord is just _not_ in "6:00." >>
Okay guys, I don't think I follow--There are identical chords in all of Awake (not meant to
sound condescending). In fact, the chord is played on guitar in one song and keys in the
other. I might be wrong, but guys it is only one chord; I don't see any connection! On a
whole album (especially a DT album) there is bound to be a chord used more than once.
Am I wrong? If so, be easy on the flames; an explination would be better!

Comments:
Kev's demos are hardly anything like you may expect. They are
nothing like DT material and have a stylr pretty much all of their
own. To those of you who haven't got them yet, don't expect any of
Kev's brilliant soloing, there is none. It's all piano chord
progressions, whistles, and bells, etc. It's really good, IMHO.
Kansas is still together, last I heard. My managaer at Little
Caesar's (kick-ass place to work, ain't it) said Kansas will be
playing in July (or August) at the Twin Falls county fair for $5 a
ticket. I'm there...
Anyone going to the Boise Queensryche concert on May 11? I'll be
there wearing my Images and Words T-shirt. Wear DT shirts for ID!
This is gonna rock!
Those of you owning some back issues of Metal Edge might want to skim
through them again. I found a pretty good article on DT titled,
"Dream Theater shoots Another Day." It has some good interviews and
stuff. Also, look in the Rockin Roundups. I found out a few cool
things about the band. (Like Kevin's ultimate sexual fantasy is with
Tori on a piano (like we didn't already know)).
Lastly (this is a long post), this is the list for my bands gigs,
tell me what you think (we finally ironed it out, in no complete
order. I play bass/backup guitars/keys/backing vox. Whew!)

I guess I could do that!
Eve... this is the only time we know of where Kevin Moore played his
samples from Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man in concert. As you
heard, the religious content is high. Perhaps that's why?
A Change of Seasons... enough said.
O Holy Night... this is one of the demos they did with Dominici at the
helm. Sort of an odd turn for a rock band, huh!
Carry That Weight... I suspect they were drunk when they and Dominici did
this one, because there was some drunken chatter before it that I had to
cut out (too much silence, it would have been miswritten in the track)
but it's really an odd demo from 1988.
Don't Look Past Me... this is one o the Majesty demos, and in this
instance, would-be vocalist Jon Hendricks is singing it. It's really
quite a good song, and Petrucci works part of the end melody around to
make an even better instrumental ending to Innocence Faded.
Wanted Dead or Alive... originally Petrucci did the instrumental track
for one of his students, and left the tape siting around. Moore stole it,
and his roommate Rich Kern (the one from the Moore demos) decided to make
it a bit spicier. :)
To Live Forever, acoustic version... originally LaBrie's vocal audition.
The gorilla session, excerpts. Petrucci. Wanders a lot. John really has
little songwriting ability at this early juncture.
Mission: Impossible Theme... Z-Rock uses this sometimes.
The Back Pain Jam you all know about, when Mike's back went out at a
Toronto show from 10/25/94, and he sat int he back with a chiropractor
while Derek and the Johns banged out a rare, never again played jam.
The Awake Heavy Jam was the instrumental we ALL enjoyed after (dangit)
TOWHTSTS and IF left the setlist of the Awake tour.
Experimental... Petrucci. It's source or why he wrote it remains shrouded
in mystery.
Tears, Winter .,.. from the 1/31/95 Ronnie Scotts' Uncovered gig.
Mystery track... I ain't saying. First person who tells me EXACTLY where
this is from gets a free copy of Cygnus when it comes out.
