Hey Hairball! I got one word for you...

                            AMEN!!!!!!!!!

Also, to the guy(huge apologies for not having your name) who
said that he didn't like the LFAGA and TOWHTSTS intros, I have two comments.

One, on LFAGA, if you don't like that intro, then its your
    opinion and I completely understand.
But on TOWHTSTS, I hope I can clarify what I call the "intro". I
think of the intro to that song as the moment the drums and bass begin on
the odd-time rhythm to the point where the singing starts. I DON'T
really care for the bass and guitar harmonic intro over the rain sample.
Does this change your answer about TOWHTSTS?? Let me know!

I just got my Awake TAB book today, and I thought
I'd give the specifics for those interested:

    What:::::: Awake TAB book
    Publisher: Warner Brothers
    Cost:::::: $24.95
    :::::::::: ALL songs tabbed out

Front cover reads: Edited by John Petrucci. Inside says
same and: Transcribed by Dale Turner and Jessie Gress.

The book is 157 pages of music. The seven string parts
are written as....seven string parts. No bass parts (like
    I&W TAB book).

Keyboard parts notated and tabbed out: 6:00 (intro),
6:00 (solo), CIAW (intro), Erotomania (intro),
SDV (pretty much the whole thing), and various oddities.

I'm glad they transcribed the 7 string as that, even though
I only have a 6 string. I would rather use a pitch shift
    than retune anyday!

Oh, for those who debated about the timing for Mirror, here
    is what this book says:
    4/4 (1st bar) 3/4 (2nd bar; drums enter) 12/8 (4X) 4/4 (7X)
        2/4 (1X) 9/16 (1X) 4/4 (16X)
And no triplets; just 16th notes (well except for the 12/8
part). I didn't think this up, so if you don't like it,
    tell Petrucci.

If you need the telephone number to Warner Bros., let me
know. That's where I got mine. Or order it from your
music store. Let's support these TAB books so they'll
release future ones later (and maybe even a WDADU TAB
book; though I doubt they'll do it, but who knows if there
    is a potential market....).

    So long faithful guitar slingers,
    Brandon Vaughn ***** edleader@uwf.cc.uwf.edu *****

a band i was that broke up about a year ago covered PMU. it was only 1 of
a couple covers we did. my guitarist played it note for note, even the
keyboard solos (lack of a keyboardist called for it. i kinda prefered it that
    way too). i played bass and i must admit that i indeed changed a coupla things;
sometimes to cover for the lack of keyboards; sometimes becuz of artistic
license (meaning i cudnt play the part ;) actually, the only part i really
couldn't play what John M. plays was the super fast part right before the
2nd(?) chorus. my poor lil fingers just couldn't move that fast :) so i'd play
the keyboard part, which sounded better bcuz it carried the main feel.

at one point we were going to cover UAGM but our drummer was a dork and too
lazy to practice it (the reason we broke up...bastard..."the worse thing in life
is wasted talent." - a Bronx Tale). anyhoo...

my guitarist and i messed around w/ playing the Ytse Jam and figured most of it
out. but alas, i am not the virtuoso that Mr. Myung is. so i'll stick to playing
    Mr. Dibiase's fun lines :)

we wrote our own material. 90% of our set was original. i'll spare the details.
anyone interested enough (aka bored) can see my story at:
    http://www.site.gmu.edu/~jjens/polaris/polaris.html

about Nirvana: actually, at a gig, in front of 4 ppl, i switched to guitar,
guitarist to drums, drums to bass, other guitarist to vocals, vocals to guitar.
and then we played Smells Like Teen Spirit. well, we thought it was funny :)

to recap: DT roolz! and i can't play Mr. Myung's fast or flashy parts.

    later,

There is a connection between Innocence Faded and Erotomania. Actually, this is the only connection that I have found myself in Erotomania. The vocal melody in IF at 2:11 "Wearing apathetic displays, Sharing flesh like envy in cages" is repeated with they keyboards in Erotomania at 2:38. It's not exactly the same, but I believe it's intentional.

    hey guys,

I just got home from my bass lesson. I asked my teacher if he'd heard of Dream Theater and he said his band opened for DT at the Berklee Performance Center. Petrucci did a clinic before and he got to play with Petrucci and Steve Morse and some other guy I don't know. He thought Petrucci was a "real nice" player but he said the show was beyond loud. He said Myung had a wall of like 20 15" bass cabs and he couldn't make out anything. Berklee Performance Center holds about 1500 but he said they were set up to play a stadium. Anyway, I was telling him about some of the stuff on Awake and he said he might pick it up.

On the cover of "Awake" I see...

6:00 The clock in the moon reads this.

Caught in a Web Spider-web next to the mirror.

Innocense Faded The guy in the mirror is slightly transparent. Also, the mirror reflects what was once good (Beautiful blue sky, etc.) and now this innocence has faded in the the dark reality of today

(A Mind Beside Itself) The statue looks at itself as it was in the past

Erotomania The guy's face is all stressed out. =)

Voices Stressed face = voices conflicting within? =)

The Silent Man His stoic face shows an unwillingness to speak. The Mirror It's the centerpiece of the whole cover for God's sake!!!

Lie The beauty of youth's innocense has now become an ugly lie as we see today's shadowy reality.

Lifting Shadows off a Dream Could the statue be trying to lift off the shadows of his reality to uncover his former state of innocense, which he dreams about constantly?

Scarred Finding his plight futile, he remains in this shadowy world, desined to spend thousands on a psychiatrist to help him strip it all back and uncover his scars that he's had since he left his world of innocense.

Space Dye Vest Since I have no clue as to what a Space Dye Vest is, I'll just have to break it into parts. SPACE: Jupiter in the upper right hand corner gives the cover a spacey look. DYE: Um, you can only B.S. so far on this thing. I haven't a fuckin' clue. VEST: Could the statue be wearing a vest??? You could call it that.

    Other observations:

Silouhetted in the background, I see a "Metropolis". The moon-clock could represent "Another Day" and "Take the Time" as well as "Under a Glass Moon" and "Wait for Sleep". This struggle with his past and the reality of today is his way of "Learning to Live". The statue is "Surrounded" in sand dunes. The dunes may pull at him, causing him to say "Argh! They're trying to Pull Me Under!"

I took a look at When Dream and Day Unite, and only saw one correlation: "Only a matter of time" with that moon-clock thing again.

One final thing: When I first bought Awake, I thought the statue was holding a torch. I guess however that he's just tugging at his beard or something. Does anyone know if this is an actual statue or just something the artist made up? Any thoughts as to who the face in the mirror might be? (Sans-hair of course...)

I always thought I was a master at bullshitting. I wonder if there's a contest or something for this. I could just submit this crap and possibly win it all!

Thanks to George who reminded me of all the neato stuff on the cover.

Synopsis: If it's not Scottish, it's CRAP!!!

True enough. =) That "Learrrrrrned" gripe was just an example of how he could maybe use some more training or something. Listserv is one of the most popular programs for running mailing lists, so it's worthwhile to learn how to correctly unsubscribe.

To unsubscribe from a mailing list, you *don't* send mail to the main address. This mail will (usually) be ignored by the list manager.

Please send the mail to the appropriate mailinglist-request@site. For example, if you're trying to unsubscribe from ytsejam@arastar.com, you would send:

    unsubscribe ytsejam

to ytsejam-request@arastar.com with a subject of "asdf" (if the subject has words like "unsubscribe" in it, the request will be denied).

This won't work if you're trying to unsub from a majordomo list (none here). Nor will it work if you're trying to unsub from a manual list like elephant-talk@arastar.com. In the case of the majordomo site, send a message to majordomo@site with the word "help" in the subject and you should get a message which will explain how you can unsubscribe.

If you want to unsubscribe from a manual list, there is usually an unsubscribe address. (In Elephant Talk's case, send email to elephant-talk-request@arastar.com and ask to be unsubscribed.)

As far as Rush, I only have "Chronicles". The Chronicles version of 2112 is 6:48 long and consists of about 4.5 minutes of an instrumental "Overture" and then the goofy lyrics of "The Temples of Syrinx". People keep praising this song as one of Rush's greatest. Do I just have a really condensed (bad) version of 2112 or should I just get a life and listen to the lyrics harder?

Parts of this tune have long plagued me, but I am certain about some parts that others seem unsure of. Here they are....

    * trudged in the depths of winter snow [2:00] * In my den of inequity [3:25] * with desire unfulfilled (at least in the DOE version, I hear a very distinct "un" before the word) [10:00] * Utopia high in the sky [10:56]

What the heck is the last line before the closing section? "They all meet at twelve" and "the oft-beaten trail" don't do it for me...

After learning the source of the first sample in "Space-Dye Vest", I went out and rented "A Room With a View" <first time I've ever seen a movie with a good five minutes of total male nudity and it was NOT RATED!> I didn't catch the chord progression in the background music <I'm tone deaf to begin with> but I did pay particular attention to the scene from which the major sample is taken. I understand it a lot more after watching the man to whom George Emerson is referring. But I couldn't help but do a double take at watching such a heartfelt profession of love from _Julian Sands_, demon man defined from the two Warlock movies. <G>

    Greetings and salutations, fellow ytsejammers!

This post is for those of you who are NOT musical gurus who play 7 instruments in an amazing band (am I the only one who doesn't?). Have any of you non musical types found that after listening to DT for a while, your general appreciation of other music increased? I found that after "discovering" DT and enjoying their great music, I went back and listened to many other artists with more appreciation and insight into their work. Conversely, I think I'm soon going to find that some music I listen to WASN'T as good as I thought it was.

Examples of the former category for me were: Queen, Tori Amos. No specific artists for the latter category, but I haven't listened to much besides DT for a while, since my newly purchased I&W (I can't get enough of this album. Most CD's will eventually wear thin for me, with me perhaps returning to them every once in a while, but this is always amazing!) and Awake CD's have a habit of hogging the CD player.

By the way, one thing that has amazed me about DT is Mike's drumming! I've heard amazing vocals and guitar work before, but never drums like that! Sorry to bore you ppl that is old news to, but I just had to let it out. I get sick of hearing "Dream Theater? Who?". (or worse, after a bit of a listen, "just more heavy metal crap.")

    Post your thoughts, ppl!

I just had a question for Mike Bahr and anyone else that has Subcon CD already. Is the version of To Live Forever that is on there at the proper speed? I have a tape of the vocalist auditions ( I think I got it from Mike Burstin) and the few songs that James does are sped up a bit, thats way he sounds like 15 year old girl! :) I have a 4 track record with a pitch knob which slows down the tape speed and therefor also lowers the pitch. When I played James' songs back with the pitch turned down a bit, he sounds like he normally does, not as high.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Is your copy of the Vocalist tapes like this? Is Subcon like this?

Does anyone have all 3 of James' songs in their entirity? I have Forever, Learing to Live and Take the Time. I think it is TtT that is last and it cuts out at the end of the instrumental section.

BTW - to the person who wrote in the last 'jam about the odd times in The Mirror. The only part that is in a odd time is one measure right around when the drums first come in while the guitar is playing. But once the drums come in with the steady beat (bass 1+3, snare 2+4), everything is in 4/4.

this is the part that is repeated from 0:06 to 0:14

    1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 guitar xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx b drum x x x x snare x x x x

this is what starts at 0:15

    1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 guitar xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx xxx b drum x x x x snare x x x x

The only part that is a bit odd is right before the 0:06 part above when the drums come. Everything else is straight forward as you can see.

I guess 11 years of drum lessons just reading rythmes instead of pitches helps out in that department. :)

[stuff deleted involving superimposing time signatures, etc.] I actually got it myself a couple of months ago, through a hint that somebody dropped on the DT newsgroup. I don't know anything about time signatures and all that, so what I did is just write "XXX XXX XXX" over and over again for the guitar and bass notes. Under that, at the correct spots, I scribbled in "B" for bass drum, and "S" for snare, and I could finally SEE what the hell was going on. Before that, I was just bewildered and was wondering why Portnoy was fucking around and why it seemed to work so well. Ever since then, I've been showing that to people, adding (casually:)), "My favorite band is Dream Theater and this is the kind of stuff they do. Nacho ordinary heavy metal band, huh?" I actually surprised a couple of people, who couldn't believe that a metal band would (or could!) do something like that. > > Marc Respass > mer@sol.iii.net > http://www.iii.net/users/mer.html > > > > Date: Mon, 1 May 1995 12:40:42 -0500 > From: Ryan J Benedict <rbenedic@gac.edu> > To: ytsejam@anthor.arastar.com > Subject: Ayn Rand, etc > Message-ID: <199505011740.MAA04727@mora.gac.edu> > > David John Baranski wrote in Y-Jam 802 > > <<(nor do I plan to get it [WDADU] - DT without LaBrie > is not DT)>> > > Is Dream Theater without Kevin Moore DT? > > Just curious. That is strictly up to you. I think that's a pretty personal question and will vary a lot from person to person. As for myself, I just think of DT as the band that Mike P. happens to be involved with right now. If HE ever leaves DT, I probably will dump DT too. > > Nypsie Younis "Yup, I worship Mike" Hilal

People keep praising this > song as one of Rush's greatest. Do I just have a really condensed (bad) version > of 2112 or should I just get a life and listen to the lyrics harder?

Very condensed. All of 2112 is 20:47 in length, and comprises a lyrical and musical journey that Rush never Quiiiiiiite reached again. (though their other epic efforts, Lamneth, Xanadu, Hemispheres, et al, were definitely worthwhile). The first overture sets the theme for the whole piece, much like a classical overture. The Temples is the most bone-crushing part of the 2112 epic, and not representative of the whole. It represents the antagonists of the story. You never get to hear the plot development, climax, or conclusion on Chronicles... only on 2112. I feel if you pick up a copy of 2112, you will be pleasantly surprised.
