    Well, this is sorta DT related... I just bought a CD by the Jon Finn
    Group called "Don't Look So Serious"... anyway, they opened for DT
    here in Boston at Berklee... The band is a Satch/Vai/Hoey kind of
    band... Anyway, the CD is really cool, so for those of you in the New
    England area... Its a great CD to buy... I got it at Newbury Comics,
    so most of the local area shops should have it... If you saw DT here,
    and were as impressed with them as I was, I would definatly recommend
    it...

    The neat thing about this passage is that during the "Pain inside..." part, the keyboard and bass are doing this without the guitar. Then on the heavy double-kick part (the jam!) the bass goes back to its normal part while the guitar joins the keyboard, still playing this riff. Then when the vocals come back in ("So many ways...") the keyboard continues with this same exact riff while the guitar and bass both go off into their own thing. I guess Kevin wanted this line to be held through several measures by different instruments, or he liked it so much he played it for 12 counts of 8 on his own and let the other guys do what they wanted!

    Hmmm....the end of "Innocence Faded" has been mentioned a lot...hmmm...so has that fast lick from "Pull Me Under"....hmmm....don't suppose anyone would be interested in either of those....? ;>

    This is a message I wrote to Bafu Vai (Steve) yesterday. I wanted to see what was up with him before I posted.

    1. This stuff about copywrite shit and such that Jen brought up depends on where you stand morally. Legally it is OK to sell a master copy of an album for whatever price you want. Jen is the only one with a DAT master and the rest of us have tape tree copies, unless you include all of the tapes distributed by Jen as masters, and the rest as copies. Still we only have copies and not a master, so I don't like someone selling them. Like Jen replied, persuing this over a couple of tapes is not financially smart. You lose less money not pursuing it then to actually spend time and money on a case.

    2. If this guy has a second generation copy and he is selling them for above cost of a blank tape and supplies, then I find that morally objectionable. Same as someone selling a dub of a CD that is released. This is also illegal, but again it isn't usually pursued unless this practice is being done in volume by someone. Like in China with the illegal copies of American artist's studio albums.

    3. Boots, you know that I own them. My thing with them is that it is an opportunity to further extend your collection and appreciation of an artist. If I can get the material legally I will not buy them. I will also only buy them if they are something I really want. I don't treat them like studio albums. I would rather trade for them and get them on tape where neither the artist or the bootlegger profit. (As opposed to just the bootlegger profiting)

    4. I agree with you that it is uncool to post other people's personal stuff to the internet without their permission. Unfortunately, this is just my view.

    5. Jeremy. Well I traded with this guy a couple of times and got my stuff, but this was back before Christmas. He took a long time on the second trade, but after bugging him I did get the stuff.

    6. My estimation of Jeremy is that he is someone who got in over his head with trading and either couldn't deal with it, or he decided it would be OK to jump ship since he really doesn't "know" any of us because we only communicate through the net. People on BBS systems seem to have this problem more than those of us on the internet. This generate an alias and an identity which justifies immoral actions. He could be mentally fucked up, like some of the crackers I know. Any number of possibilities, but these are my theories since I do know he was a good trader for several months.

    8. My projects, I have a question about related bands material on Ytsejam. Are you for it? I plan to write a whole bunch of band reviews over the summer and put them in a database. Should I post related band capsules to Ytsejam or just put a pointer to the WWW page I am going to build, I would only be posting info on progressive metal bands to Ytsejam, that hopefully would be of interest to the people who read the digest.

    my opinion would be we would have to sell Petrucci and James on the idea. Mike doesn't have a problem with bootlegs, it seems, so of course he wouldn't mind the project... the other 2 represent the other end of the spectrum, and if they were convinced, then there probably wouldn't be a problem with any of the band. Have to remember Mike isn't representative of the band on this issue (come to think of it, Mike is sort of a wild card ;) ). Probably the most interested party would be James... has anyone heard about his opinion?

    Greetings Jammers -

    First of all, this post is dedicated to Mike Bahr. I think I'll be toasting his name at the bar every friday night for many years for what he's done on tis CD. Mike, we can't possibly thank you enough fr bringing this rare, special material to all of us fans who appreciate it best.

    Now, on with the review!

    EVE- This is a great version of the song, but not really anything special since I've already got the "Dance of Eternity" set. It is nice to not have to hear that lousy beginning to Pull Me Under right at the end, however!

    CHANGE OF SEASONS- Same story, second verse as far as this not being new for me. I love the song, however, and I'm very anxious to hear a studio version (perhaps with the samples that are on the Chris Cintron version!) on the EP later this year. I do appreciate that Mike toned down the _overdone_ bass from the DoE boot.

    O HOLY NIGHT- I'm not much of a fan of Charlie, but I _love_ this song. I've never quite heard a hymn done this way before, but I really like it. Petrucci's great string work and Portnoy's skins are very good, and don't ruin the feeling of the song. I sure can't wait to hear this one with LaBrie on the EP (at least I _hope_ the fan club bio is correct in predicting this release!!) But what's with that intro?!

    CARRY THAT WEIGHT- Again, not being a fan of Dominici, I think he sounds fine here. I really like the guys' treatment of the Beatles here. Respectful to the song, yet still definitely Dream Theater! Great conservative drum solo, there, Mike!

    DON'T LOOK PAST ME- This is one of my favorites on the album. It's too bad that it's only a demo, so the original recording wasn't probably that fantastic to begin with. I'd really like to hear it well recorded with James at the Helm. The song itself is a lot like a WDADU track. The samples are cool, and Kevin's keys sometimes remind me of Status Seeker. I really like the time changes, as well. Sorry, but Hendricks has got to go.

    WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE- I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. This is a song that DESERVED to be heard! I know that's Rich doing the chimpumk imitation in the background, but is that Kevin on leads? This will entertain me for quite a long time

    TO LIVE FOREVER- This is a fantastic treatment of this already great tune. I really love the piano, and is that Myung playing the second "rhythm" guitar part? Too bad it's sped up a bit, though.....

    THE GORILLA SESSION- Musical masturbation by _THE_ man! Kind of pointless, but still good.

    MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE THEME- This is great! I already have the version from the Lost in the Sky boot, but it's nice to hear studio outtakes like this. So, Mike, how DID Z-rock get a copy of this to use on the air?? :>

    BACK PAIN JAM- Recording leaves a bit to be desired, as does the guy talking (!), but the music is impeccable! No wonder these guys can always come up with geat studio tracks! I'd be perfectly happy to watch them jam all day like this!

    AWAKE HEAVY JAM- I like this better than the Back Pain Jam. I like the John/Derek interplay on this song.

    EXPARIMENTAL- Mying? Give that man a guitar! Yes, a little pointlass agan and without much structure, but I like acoustic stuff. I hope a version of this appears later, either on an album or live.

    TEARS- As a hard-core Rush fan, this is a dream (no pun) come true. Before I heard this, I had no idea how James was going to pull this off, but I'm impressed. (now I'm anxious to hear how he handled Marillion's Easter) I hope this appears as a B-side, either on the Silent Man single or the ACOS EP. These covers deserve to be heard as well...

    WINTER- I'm not a Tori fan, but after this (as well as Kevin's _Song For Tori_), I think I'm poised to become one! James handles this one well, and I think he does it justice without sounding like Tiny Tim and being Mr. Falsetto.

    MYSTERY- Okay, so it's a software thing. Does everyone know this but me? Clue me in?

    Overall, I'm very very happy. This one won't be leaving the CD player for quite some time -- or, until Mike's Cygnus CD shows up at my house!

    This compilation was well worth the wait, and is one of the stars of my collection. Thank you again, Mike.

    By the way, where the hell did you get "Vigil" from? Geez, you'd think you worked for an Italian Boot company the way that tracklist was labeled! :>

    Naaaaaw, you forgot the improv material. Should be at least 5 (one for each of the band to showcase), plus another where they ALL go at it, and a 7th with a *special guest*.

    Here's a q: who should the special guest be and what should they play?

    I say maybe Mattias Olssen from Anglagard on concert bass drum (they'd better order the spare drumheads ASAP!), with them perhaps launching from an extended jam into "Mars" from Holst's The Planets? Hmm... been done too many times already. How about Orff's Carmina Burana? THAT should give James plenty of material to work with.

    After all, we want to get our money's worth. :) Maybe we should expand this into a 2-day festival... Dream Theater's WOIAW (World Of Images And Words)... with free Portnoy-autographed Pro-Mark drumsticks and Kevin Moore Sample CD-ROMs for YTSEJAM list members... AND let people from the audience jam with them! ..naw, now I'm DEFINITELY dreaming... :)

    12/8 is the proper way to write that part, I agree. It eliminates the need to transcribe a tempo change. However, it is a mere technicallity, as either method of transcription gives the same results. Most musicians I know freak out when they see 12/8, but they are perfectly comfortable with 4/4. For that reason I stuck with 4/4. My next question would be-Is Take the Time also "officially" transcribed in 12/8? I would suspect that it was, as it is nearly the same case.

    Concerning Rob Devereux's post, I'm damn glad at least Mr. Portnoy agrees with me.

    Enough said.
