Yeah, I already posted a meaningless message, but now I can contribute
to a thread. My 45 secs would be from _A Change of Seasons_. Sorry, I
really don't mean to torture those who havn't heard this, but I have
was that way for a long time, and I feel your pain... :) I would choose
one of the following: 1) 18:10-18:55 (_Subconsious_ version), which
starts with "looking into the sun he says..." and continues to right
    after an ending drum fill type thing, where the audience starts to clap;
    2) 6:26-7:11, from "I said I love you... goodbye" until a new guitar lick
starts, about 20 seconds after the line #3 starts with; or 3) 6:48-7:33,
from "PLEASE DON'T GO" until just after a keys solo starts.
These all have at least some James, but include lots of instrumental
    fills and some solos....
Again, I apologize for those that I have pushed over the brink... flame
me as you wish... but not Mike, he doesn't deserve it... :)

So what have I posted... The lyrics to "To Live Forever." Sorry about that
bullsh*t. I really shouldn't put Van Halen lyrics on this list. What else?
A transcription to the instrumental part in "6:00." What was I thinking?
Such bullsh*t! No one wants transcriptions of Winger songs on here. What
else. A dream setlist, just like about eight other people. I guess we're
ALL full of bullsh*t. Then there's the spoken parts to "Space-Dye Vest."
Yet more bullsh*t, not even remotely related to this band called Dream
Theater. Geez, and all this after the event Andrew is referring to. :)

excuse me???? i know a lot of bands (or "artists") write 3 minute, crappy
songs, but metallica is not one of them....i dont recall ANY metallica songs
that short save maybe Anestesia: Pulling Teeth (i know i didnt spell that
right) .... check out "....and Justice For All" my friend ... the average song
length is seven or eight minutes with "To live is to Die", a cool instrumental,
coming in at just under ten minutes... even the black album (their
"multi-million selling album" ) contains many songs that are close to seven
minutes long ... this music isnt as diverse as Dream Theater, but it aint
short, and it aint "non-quality" ....

    IMHO,

    Howdy all!

I just had the coolest thought the other day. 1st I should mention
that it sounds like the idea of Echolyn opening for DT has now gone a
bit farther than just Mike saying "Hey, you guys should open for us some
time!" It seems that this might very well happen. Anyway, it would
be totally awesome (sorry, I thought I was in the 80's for a second)
if Echolyn would come out during Take the Time and sing the background
vocals during the chorus!! In fact, there are several other spots
that could use some more vocals, like the chorus in CiaW.

Lets see... oh yeah, I picked up another copy of the Pay-per-view video,
this one is alot better. PIcture is clearer and the sound is in true
hifi (sorry Brian, but I think the one you sent me is two channel mono).
On this one you can hear the drums panning from left to right so its
diffinetly in stereo. I was told that this one is 1st generation.

Well, I'll let ya get back to the AirDance mailing list, sorry for
the lack of copyright infringment (sp?) content.

Cool! Thanks to Bafu Vai (Steve) for "taking the time" (there's that damn DT pun again!) to post those spoken parts on "SDV"! Now, if I could just figure out how they relate to the song...

    Anyway, on to other things...

(This is more for my fellow bass jammers, but anyone is free to join in)

I just purchased the WDADU CD (OK, so I'm _a_little_ slow...), and I'm trying to figure out just whom John Myung is paying tribute to here. Tone-wise (and, occasionally, playing-wise), the resemblance appears to be to the style of Billy Sheehan, yet I don't recall John listing him as one of his influences (as far as I know). Closer to the truth would be Geddy's sound and style circa _MOVING PICTURES_, as he is definitely one of John's idols. And yet, I just can't help thinking "Sheehan" when I hear that distorted tone and style. Any comments?

(BTW, imagine my reaction when I was looking at the individual pictures of the band members inside the CD cover, and found that the synth Kevin is holding is the very same one I have...that ol' Korg DW-8000. I mean, they're good synths, it was just a bit o' a pleasant surprise.)

Peace, love, and the pursuit of low frequencies,

    Hi Jammers!

I'm proud of fellow jammers Jennifer and Steve who managed to solve their dispute in a mature way, unlike many other people in this world!

Ok, here's my fave setlist (--- indicates chit-chat, otherwise the songs done together):

Metropolis - part I Mission: Impossible Afterlife --- 6:00 (w/ extra-extended Keyboard-solo) Caught In A Web The Ytse Jam (w/ quite short Drum-solo) --- Scarred (long jam at the end, fading into Bass-solo and...) The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun --- The Mirror Lie --- Take The Time A Change Of Seasons

    ---encores---

Lifting Shadows Off A Dream Learning To Live (vocal-solo like on the rehearsal-tapes, and loooong ending)

    Eve (played from tape)

    -----------------

Ooooops, forgot AMBI and PMU! Well, that'll be another time! My set would make approx 2:20 hours. Also forgot solo-spot for JP, would be able to squeeze in somewhere I guess.

The most important part to me would definately be: Scarred/Bass Solo/The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun, and then the encores.

    Can you tell I'm a Myung-worshipper? :-)))

    -----------

Oh, BTW, I'm still waiting for my Subconscious-CD to arrive, damn that overseas snail-mail! I hope the mailman treats it a little nicer than the tape I sent to myself last week (for copyright reasons :-&). It cost me $8 and the tape arrived almost without the envelope which made it all completely useless, I'll have to do it again, GRRRRRRR!!!!

    Ok, signing off!

    /Mats

A friend of mine rented a 3DO machine and I played in with him for a while. Apparently, it has the capability to play any music CD and whilst it's playing, it adds weird color graphics to the music. They graphics are to the rhythm and you even have a few options as to what you feel like looking at. They all, however are kaleidoscope in nature.

Now if this 3DO thing comes out with its OWN Dream Theater CD, I haven't heard it. All I know is that you can play any DT CD on it and it'll give you the cool graphics.

(BTW, 3DO of course makes some pretty cool video games too...) =)

Who knows! They play it during the Z-Rock 50 a lot, as well as Gary Hoey's heavy metal "Peanuts" theme, and that one band's heavy metal "Addams Family" theme.

    > WINTER- > I'm not a Tori fan, but after this (as well as Kevin's _Song For Tori_), > I think I'm poised to become one! James handles this one well, and I > think he does it justice without sounding like Tiny Tim and being Mr. > Falsetto.

It'd be worth it. Tori's got some incredible stuff. Buy her Little Earthquakes album and/or video, you'll fall in love with the stuff that much sooner. I'd say Winter, Little Earthquakes (the vampire song, hehe) and Song for Eric are her top three.

    > By the way, where the hell did you get "Vigil" from? Geez, you'd think > you worked for an Italian Boot company the way that tracklist was > labeled! :>

I know a lot of you have noticed the odd labeling and asked about it. There's kind of an intersting story behind that. I was not prepared to go with one of the better printing companies at the time, and the one I _did_ get stuck with, would not cast the dies for a bootleg album. I had to tell them Subconscious was the name of _my_ band, and we do a lot of covers, said I. But, on the other hand, I hate those italian mislabels, so I wanted it to be clear to the Jammers which song was which. Vigil is a synonym for Eve, Change is for ACOS, Live is for To Live Forever, and you notice I was able to fully label all of DT's covers by putting the original artists (C) dates on it. I am hoping not to have to be so drastic with Cygnus. I believe I'll be having it printed as the work of a "Rush cover band" since those are known to exist. Then I can put all the real song titles, etc. :) The above story also explains why it dosen't say "Dream Theater" anywhere.

<plant tongue in cheek for this portion> Because Those dang Italian/Taiwanese/Luxembourg bootleg companies screwed up the track listing (like they always do!) and left no liner notes for that FANTASTIC Subconscious CD they put out, I wrote the following insert for my CD, using a post Mike Bahr made a week or so ago as a basis. It's written so that any passing DT fan could pick it up and have a clue as to what they were hearing on the CD. Actually, I think they're pretty good histories/descriptions of the songs.

I post them here to help out any of you Sub owners who are wondering what they're listening to and want to remember what it is next year, too! Please cut and paste them freely, and if you've got any suggestions/questions/comments, I'm open to them! Thanks!

DREAM THEATER SUBCONSCIOUS 1. Eve (5:21) Recorded live at the Limelight, New York City on March 4, 1993. This is the only time known of (that has been recorded) where Kevin Moore played the samples from James Joyce's Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man in concert. 2. A Change of Seasons (19:19) This was also recorded at the New York City Limelight show on March 4, 1993 -- one of the few times it has been played live with LaBrie on vocals. This 20 minute epic is slated for release later this year. 3. O Holy Night (4:10) This is one of the demos done with ex-frontman Charlie Domi nici at the helm. This song was a part of a few live shows during the Images and Words "Music In Progress" tour, and a version featuring LaBrie is expected to be released in the future. 4. Carry That Weight/Golden Slumbers (6:13) A demo of a Beatles song, recorded in 1988 with Charlie Domi nici on vocals. I suspect they were drunk when they did this one, because there was some drunken chatter before it that I had to cut out. 5. Don't Look Past Me (6:21) This is one of the original Majesty demos, and in this instance, would-be vocalist John Hendricks is singing it. It's really quite a good song, and Petrucci works part of the end melody around to make an excellent instrumental ending reminiscent of what ap- peared later on the Awake track, "Innocence Faded." 6. Wanted: Dead or Alive (5:08) Originally John Petrucci did the instrumental track of this Bon Jovi cover tune for one of his guitar students, and left the tape sitting around. Ex-keyboardist Kevin Moore stole it, and his roommate Rich Kern (also featured on the Kevin Moore demos) decided to make it a bit spicier, and is the "other" voice heard in the background. 7. To Live Forever (acoustic) (4:54) This track was originally recorded as one of the four songs for James LaBrie's vocal audition. The others were; Take The Time, Metropolis, and Under A Glass Moon. 8. The Gorilla Session (excerpts) (2:59) A home-recorded solo session by Petrucci. At this early juncture in his career, John has really little songwriting ability and conse quently this track wanders quite a lot. 9. Mission: Impossible Theme (1:17) This song also made it into the live set occasionally on the "Music In Progress" Tour. Z-Rock uses this studio outtake on the air sometimes. 10. The Back Pain Jam (5:07) When Mike Portnoy's back went out at the 10/25/94 show in Toronto, Canada, Derek Sherinian and John Petrucci banged out this rare, never again played jam while Mike sat backstage with a chiropractor. 11. The Awake Heavy Jam (3:51) This rare instrumental was played between "The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun" and "Innocence Faded" -- before they left the setlist on the "Awake" tour. 12. Experimental (1:23) Once thought to be another solo Petrucci instrumental, possibly of him warming up before a show, this song was actually written and performed by John Myung. It's source, or why he wrote it, remains even now shrouded in mystery. 13. Tears (3:09) This is a Rush cover song, recorded live at the famous "Uncov ered" concert at Ronnie Scotts in London, England on January 31, 1995 14. Winter (2:23) A Tori Amos cover, also played live at the January 31, 1995 Ronnie Scotts' "Uncovered" gig. 15. Mystery track Compiled and Prodced by Mike Bahr, garion@indirect.com March, 1995

Hi jammers! Could someone with the Awake tab book please post the ISBN number? I tried ordering it from the same music store that got the I&W tab for me but they said they called last week and Warner Brothers told them that it wasn't in stock yet. Thanks a bunch!

Hello, all...a quick question here about everyone's favorite OTHER progressive metal band: is there a Fates Warning mailing list? I live in Minnesota and have never once seen them come this way on tour, but would like to find out if they ever have or will. So, if anyone has any info about a Fates Warning mailing list, it would be mucho appreciated. Oh, one other question: has anyone ever heard of a band called Powermad?

    Long live DT....

This kinda has some DT content since they do play the Mirror pretty often on the Howard Stern show. :)

Anyway, I was wondering if there were any jammers out there that had some Howard stuff that they would want to trade. I was getting some from Jeremy Haynes but ....

I would like to get a copy of the Crucified by the FCC and the last pay-per-view special. I've got a bootlist with lots of good stuff include tons of DT stuff. If you have any Howard stuff and would like to trade, please let me know and I'll send you my list.

    Thanks!

    Ya know what...

I just listened to "The Mirror," and there are 4 <count 'em: 4> time sigs in the intro to the song: 4/4, 3/4, 12/8, and 5/4. As many jammers have already posted <b wherry, j hartman, others...> there is one measure of 4/4 followed immediately by one measure of 3/4, a slight accelerando, and then four measures of 12/8, a slight slowing in tempo, eight measures of 4/4, seven measures of 4/4 in a double time feel, one measure of 5/4<or 3 and 2, however you want to count it> one measure of 4/4, another slight accelerando, and then into 12/8 when the vocals come in. I don't have the Awake tab book, but I think this is pretty accurate even if it doesn't coincide exactly w/ the book. All that stuff about accelerando and stuff is just for clarity--nine times out of ten there will automatically be a slight tempo change when you go from a simple to a compound meter <i.e.: 4/4 to 12/8>. I'm sure tomorrow you'll all tell me I'm wrong, but I just got back from my registration app. and for the second semester in a row I didn't get a class I really wanted to take, so I really felt like pissing some people off.

Well, I hope this starts another flame war, and everyone have a nice day.

Hello, again, everybody. It's Steve. Ignore my last post. I just started reading old jams, and saw that someone posted the Mirror time sigs as printed in the Awake tab book. Personally, I wouldn't have used 9/16 time, but who am I to argue with John Petrucci? I can't believe I actually jumped onto that bandwagon. <insert DJ segue...> And speaking of bandwagons, I would have to say that my DT "dream set" would be:

"Wake Up!" intro tape Pull Me Under Innocence Faded Lifting Shadows Off A Dream Under A Glass Moon Scarred A Change Of Seasons

    Intermission

Eve<with samples> Xanadu <yes, the Rush song!> The Mirror Lie To Live Forever Caught In A Web <NO drum solo, please!> A Mind Beside Itself i) Erotomania ii) Voices iii) The Silent Man

    Encore

    Improvisised Jam Metropolis

Sorry I don't have the lengths of the songs, but from memory it looks like about a 2 1/2 hour show <bring your oxygen!> And another thing, I don't want to see them in another dive. I want either a nice mid-size venue, or a Theater. Nothing against Hammerjacks, mind you, but somewhere you can be comfortable and not have to stand for six hours in a general admission seat. I'll also be mixing sound, so nothing overpowers anything else when there's no solo going on. Their studio sound is awesome, but their live sound leaves much to be dsired. Does Hairball want to help me? :)

So, who wants to come to _this_ show?
