Hello, again, everybody. It's Steve. Ignore my last post. I just started
reading old jams, and saw that someone posted the Mirror time sigs as printed
in the Awake tab book. Personally, I wouldn't have used 9/16 time, but who
am I to argue with John Petrucci? I can't believe I actually jumped onto
that bandwagon. <insert DJ segue...> And speaking of bandwagons, I would
have to say that my DT "dream set" would be:

    "Wake Up!" intro tape
    Pull Me Under
    Innocence Faded
    Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
    Under A Glass Moon
    Scarred
    A Change Of Seasons

    Intermission

    Eve<with samples>
    Xanadu <yes, the Rush song!>
    The Mirror
    Lie
    To Live Forever
Caught In A Web <NO drum solo, please!>
    A Mind Beside Itself
            i) Erotomania
           ii) Voices
          iii) The Silent Man

    Encore

    Improvisised Jam
    Metropolis

Sorry I don't have the lengths of the songs, but from memory it looks like
    about a 2 1/2 hour show <bring your oxygen!> And another thing, I don't want
to see them in another dive. I want either a nice mid-size venue, or a
Theater. Nothing against Hammerjacks, mind you, but somewhere you can be
comfortable and not have to stand for six hours in a general admission seat.
I'll also be mixing sound, so nothing overpowers anything else when there's
no solo going on. Their studio sound is awesome, but their live sound leaves
much to be dsired. Does Hairball want to help me? :)

So, who wants to come to _this_ show?

    Hey everyone,

This is regarding the "dream set" issue that has been going on
recently on the list. Maybe there IS a way we could get to see these
lists (well, part of them at least). I seem to recall hearing that
Megadeth had fans vote on what song's they would play on the tour through
their WWW page. It's possible that we could do the same, or get DT's
management to agree to do it. I mean, hell we have enough support on the
Internet to try and get what we want (the SoundFX mailbox is proof
positive of that) so maybe someone could get in touch with the mangaement
and see if them would agree. I know that people on here have some
connections and I think it would be worth a shot to give it a try. Make
some of these dreams true I guess you could say.

    Just a thought, :-)
    Brian

    Hello everyone! :)

My hubby recently had a DT related dream that you may find amusing...

He said that we were some place in Southern California, looking for my
"natural parents" (in reality, I am *not* adopted, although I sometimes
wished for it when I was much younger <g>). Well, he gets to their house...
He sees some kid riding his bike down the sidewalk, so he asks the kid if he
knows my parents. The guy is too distracted by my husband's Dream Theater
    shirt to reply...

"Hey, cool band!" the kid says.

"Really? You're familiar with 'em?" [My husband's standard bemused reply
whenever he meets someone who comments on DT.]

"Yes - this is the Dream Theater neighborhood. Look around!"

So, my husband starts to look around him, and the very first thing he sees is
a garbage can with the stylized "M" logo!

Unfortunately, he woke up before he had a chance to investigate the rest of
    the neighborhood. <g>

I used this as a chance to rib him - that Dream Theater must be in my blood.
    :)

No, DT's not going to be on "Unplugged" anytime soon, but if they were, what songs do you think they should do. I guess they have an hour. Here are the songs I think would translate well to the Unplugged context:

Wait For Sleep Learning To Live Surrounded Lifting Shadows Off A Dream Space-Dye Vest Pull Me Under A Mind Beside Itself i) Erotomania <this would have to be modified, obviously> ii) Voices iii) The Silent Man <of course!>

Again, I don't have the times, but I think that's about an hour.

Before you all go nuts because of all the keys-heavy songs, picture Derek up there with a baby grand, a detuned upright<for a bit of a jangly sound>, and a Hammond organ, which I think would be an acceptable Unplugged instument. I think Voices would be really great acoustic, since it relies heavily on the chords for texture rather than special f/x. Pull Me Under acoustic would probably _still_ bring the house down, and if you don't like the song it just might change your opinion a bit. Imagine Lifting Shadows with the main bass harmonic intro played on a soft piano, and JM doing that string synth pad on the violin, which of course is the instrument he started out on. They could just tell James, "Hey man: settle down. No screaming, OK?" You could do the instrumentation like this:

James: Vocals, that little shaker-thing John M: Bass, acoustic guitar, violin John P: Guitars <6 and 12 string>, mandolin Mike: a little, tiny drum set, lots of percussion Derek: Piano, Organ

They could also do a rippin' acoustic version of Wanted: Dead or Alive. Mike Portnoy on background vocals. Watch out Bon Jovi. :)

    What do ya think?

Well, I have not seen the Japanese Video, but I just got a bootleg called "Wake Up" which is a 2-CD boot of that show.

The CD is okay... I love the instrumental jams, especially the one after Lifting Shadows... (I think.. all the bass harmonics... I wish I could see John Myung play that....grrr!)

Anyway, since someone was saying something about James' voice... I was really impressed with Silent Man... Sounds just like the CD. I think he has to push his voice to get past all teh guitar, bass, keys, drums... But when the rest of the band was quiet, he didn't have to try so hard... It's the same during the beginning of "To Live Forever" anything quiet...

With all the talk about Ibanez Universe 7-string guitar, I thought I'd pass this on:

If you want one, you're screwed. Ibanez dropped them this year. If you can find one, grab it. Pay up to about $1000.00, but no more.

I got mine for $600.00. It's white. I could've had the black one, but it was $1000.00.

    Hi everyone,

Before anyone asks, NO, this post won't be as long as my last one and there's plenty of DT-related content! :D

To Steve Borzilleri <silenzio@elwha.evergreen.edu>, aka "Bafu Vai," who loudly proclaimed:

    >>>Yes the issue is dropped.<<<

I think I just heard all of YJ heave a huge sigh of relief. ;)

    >>>Oh well. Better to be all-done than well-done. ;> thanx airdance!<<<

    You're welcome, anytime. ;>

And to those people who didn't seem to enjoy my last lengthy discourse, TOUGH! I put spoilers in the heading explaining what the topic was and that it was a long message, I included another warning in the beginning of the text telling you that it was a long note which you might want to skip if it didn't interest you, and then I even basically apologized at the end for having to post the message in the first place. Next time, if you don't want to deal with a somewhat off-topic, yet necessary post, DON'T READ IT. You'll probably be a lot happier and then YOU won't end up taking up excess bandwidth complaining about it. :)

More wisdom from your favorite and mine, Bafu Vai :) :

    >>>Space-Dye Vest, spoken samples:

    [snip]

Could a few jammers please listen to the song while reading the above transcri ption to verify the parts, make corrections, or add spicy comments full of panache? Thanks.<<<

You're welcome. :) I asked Kev about these sound bites once, so I thought it was about time I got around to commenting on them since I know where they're from. :)

Here are my own transcriptions of what the sound bites say, plus info on where they came from:

    1st quote:

"...he's the sort who can't know anyone intimately, least of all a woman. He doesn't know what a woman is. He wants you for a possession, something to look at like a painting or an ivory box. Something to own and to display. He doesn't want you to be real, or to think or to live. He doesn't love you...but I love you. I want you to have your own thoughts and ideas and feelings, even when I hold you in my arms...it's our last chance...it's our last chance..."

I think it's pretty common knowledge now to everyone here that that one is from _A Room With A View_.

    2nd quote:

"...I was gonna move out...ummm...get, get a job, get my own place, ummm, but...I go into the mall where I want to work and they tell me, I'm, I was too young...."

This quote and the fifth quote are both from a documentary on dysfunctional families which was shown on PBS last year (I _think_ it was '94). Those aren't actors, unfortunately, they're real families going through some very real turmoil. :/

    3rd quote:

"...Some people gave advice before about facing the facts, about facing realit y. And this is, this without a doubt, is his biggest challenge ever. He's going to have to face it. You're gonna have to try, he's gonna have to try and, uh, and, and, and get some help here. I mean, now no one can say they know how he feels..."

This is definitely, absolutely, without-a-doubt commentary from the OJ Simpson freeway chase last year. I don't know the name of the person speaking here (a sports commentator from one of the networks, I think someone said once?), but Kevin told me it was from the OJ thing, so there you go.

    4th quote:

"...That's what they say that, like that in Houston, or something. They say, 'yeah, it's 180 degrees, but it's a dry heat.'

    In Houston they say that?

Oh, maybe not, I'm all mixed up.

Dry until they hit the swimming pool..."

    >>>[Bafu Vai] * - this voice sounds an awful lot like Conan O' Brian.<<<

This is definitely Conan O'Brien. :) Don't know who the guest was who made the alternating comments in-between, but that's where it's from.

This 5th quote is a bit harder to hear, but this is what I could gleen:

"...(unintelligible)...I get up with the sun...she doesn't, she doesn't want you to sleep in?...I don't care what you do, I don't care what you say, you're grounded...that door gets locked, that door gets locked at night by 9 o'clock. If you're not in this house by 9 o'clock, then you'd better find someplace to sleep...you think you can go to your mom's house and sucker her into it?...(unintelligible)..."

As I said, that one and the 2nd one are both from a documentary on dysfunction al families.

Hope that helped! Anybody want to tackle some of the audio clips from Kev's demos? I can help with those too, but I didn't want to just give them away. :)

And finally, Jeff Chew <HuntNKill@aol.com> asked:

    >>>Air Dance: Man, how long did it take you to type out the interview w/ Mike P.?<<<

I don't know; I did it in bits & pieces, whenever I had the chance to sit down & type. :) Glad so many people enjoyed it, and whew, aren't we ALL glad Mike helped clear up that Mirror debate thing?haha

See, I told you it wouldn't be as long. :)

    Take care everyone,

    Jennifer <airdance@aol.com>

    Dear jammers,

I've read a lot about CD singles releases in the past digests. One of the things that amazed me was the fact that "The Silent Man" doesn't seem to be released in the UK (and probably also not in the US).

Well this single was released in The Netherlands somewhere around Februari (could be earlier, because production date is 1994) already and has the following tracklist:

The Silent Man (album version) 3:48 Take The Time (demo version) 7:58 Eve 5:11

The single release of "Lie" (came out around October 1994), also Dutch version, containts the following tracks:

Lie (edit) 5:00 Space-Dye Vest (album version) 7:29 To Live Forever 4:54 Another Day (live) 4:43

If I am right "Eve" and "To Live Forever" should not official been released in the US(according to the comments in Ytsejam). So could someone tell me which songs were on the US release of "Lie". This because the DT Homepage discography is accurate till "Awake".

Maybe people are willing to exchange copies of CD singles to complete collections. I am dying to get more DT input, because I get jealous after reading all those American DT overkills, specially about "Subconscious".

    Good morning Jammers,

For those of you who havn't gotten a hold of Dream Theaters bootleg from the "Waking up the World" tour 94-95, FIND IT!! It was recorded on October 28,94 in New York City. I saw the same concert on November 8 in Minneapolis. There are a lot of changes they throw in.Nothing that sounds crappy though. The sound quality isn't the best right away.Mike and john(s) really over-power K.J. at the beginning. After K.J announces Derek Sheridian the sound levels even out pretty good. This bootleg entitled "A KICK INTO A DREAM" is two C.D.s. Yeh, the price is another $50. If you happened to see them at all during this past tour, your'e going to want to buy this. I guarantee you'll literally re-live the concert you saw! It's sweet! Well the instructors of my education beckon me. Later. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - " Balls and Chunck Is Where It's At"----->Mike Portnoy ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Scott Sneen "The Monkeyman" C.V.F.N. Hello everyone, it's BABS. I want to let all of you know that there has been a delay in the decision making process on which members of Dream Theater will be attending the convention, if any. Dream Theater has not been able to get into the recording studio as scheduled which is possibly going to put the convention on the back burner. I spoke with their Management this morning and they are doing everything possible to make their attendance possible. Their top priority is to see that the recording of A Change of Seasons is completed. I will keep everyone posted as more information becomes available. I can assure you that both entities (DT's Management & I) are working really hard on this. Thank you for your patience. What you all could do for me is I need to double check the exact count of people interested in attending the convention. I will need you full name and a backup telephone # for you in case I need to call anyone (as you know some of you are in different time zones and the internet can only work so fast, I can assure you that I will keep the time change in mind when calling as well). Thank you for your cooperation with this. -BABS

Here's the information I forgot to post about the Awake TAB book: ISBN #: 0-89724-608-X Warner Bros. Phone #: 1-800-327-7643 (ext.(?) or option 2) I believe option 2 is personal sales. Anyway, you can get either I&W or Awake TAB books for $24.95 plus s/h.

The time sigs I posted for Mirror were taken from the book which was edited by John Petrucci. I didn't mean to imply anyone was right or wrong; I didn't work it out. I just wanted to tell all of you what this book said. Just eighths and sixteenths according to the book. He does just play a straight rhythm, so it must be Mike who is causing the different time sigs (like the 12/8 part). Anyway, I'm sure there is more than one way to look at it or notate it. One thing I noticed on the Awake TAB book's transcription of SDV is that John used an EBow on some of the parts in SDV. I thought that was interesting. Looks like he really experimented with equipment on Awake.

Hairball, did I hear you say that King's X was dropped from their label?! What has happened to them, anybody?
