Well since you asked, I play an Ibanez Radius. It is identical to the
one that Joe Satriani is holding on the cover of his Dreaming 11 ep,
except it is dark, almost black, marron. I also play a '78 walnut Les Paul.
I have a Fender M-80 Chours amp which is pretty cool, but I want an ADA
MP-2 and a realy bad. Question, why do you want to replace the tremlo
with a Floyd? If it has an Ibanez Edge they are in my oppion the best
    double locking system around.

Just got Dance of Eternity and Lost in the Sky last week. Overall,
they're excellent. My only disappointment was on Only a Matter of Time
from LitS. It's one of my favorite DT songs. The sound quality is pretty
    good (even though you can't
understand a word LaBrie says) up until the classical-sounding keyboard
solo part. What the hell happened there? It sounds like whoever was
recording it went into the bathroom for the rest of the song! I still
say they're worthing getting if you can get a copy of them. I'm anxious
to get my copy of Subconscious so I can hear what Mike did with ACoS from
    DoE.

    Greetings again,
I ran across a copy of A Kick into Into a Dream (I think that's the
one) yesterday. It's a two CD live set from a New York show in '94. Is
this worth the $51.oo they're asking for it? I can hardly wait to get it
anyway, but I am wondering if it is a low quality boot. I believe it's
made by Live Storm which is the same company that did Queensryche's
Unplugged disk. That one is good and listenable.
Anyhow, I'd appreciate opinions of this disk. Thanks.

Glad the list is back up to strength... I hope the people who got
unsubscribed are back without any damage. :)

Is there any way for those of us who live 3000 miles too far to attend
the con can get nametages?? :) Probably not, I know. sigh.

Myst: pretty graphics, too easy gameplay (from a long-time advengure gamer)
would have won it within a week if it didn't keep crashing every five
minutes, so it took me a month. The ending is really disappointing too.

I bought Echolyn's As the World. Great disk if you like mellower prog
stuff. Good thing I do. Tough to make myself listen to other stuff in
the past week, but I don't want to get sick of it too soon! :)

Hm. I thought I had more to say. Oh well.

ATTENTION, ATTENTION - WE ARE HAVING A CONVENTION

The YTSE convention is a definite! Here's the scoop:

It will be held on Saturday, June 3, at 6:00 PM at the Smithtown, Long Island
Sheraton. I have spoken with DT's Management and they have guaranteed
Mike Portnoy's attendance. Management is currently working on getting more
members of the band to attend.

This is what I will need from anyone who plans on attending:

I need to collect $25 from each person attending. The $25 covers the cost
of the banquet room rental, the bartender (cash bar), and the meal. I
have arranged for the room to be set up lounge style. The meal will be a
deli buffet (i.e. hero sandwich w/ salads, choice of sodas, desserts. I
have made arrangements for kosher foods as well.

Please send you check to the following address:

                            Barbara (my real name) Battaglia
                            PO Box 402
                            Geneseo, NY 14454

I have reserved a block of 15 guest rooms. Anyone needing overnight
accommodations at the Sheraton, please call 516/231-1100 (Reservations Dept.)
Tell them that you are with the YTSE Convention and you will get a discount
rate of $89. for single/double occupancy. ONLY CALL THIS NUMBER IF YOU
    NEED OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATIONS.

Also, please note that the overnight rate of $89. is only guaranteed until
May 21. After that the rates are scheduled to change.

Please contact me about making your reservations at the banquet hall,
I'm counting on you all to help me finalize all of this ASAP.

    Thank you.

PS: If any of you remember, I was in Germany when they showed the (limitted) fottage of the Ronnie Scott's gig and those of you in the US didn't miss much at all. Trust me. However, if this video comes out I'll be first in line.

Timere McCardle are you out there? Please email me privately. We have a mutual friend.

Anyway, that's about all for now. Anyone know if the boys got in the studio yet? When I pump up ACoS in my car stereo, the dash starts making this vibrating sound. I really need a studio version!!

    >In reply to those discussing set times of Dream Theater vrs Metallica.

Set time, especially for headline bands, should only be dictated by artist endurance, music quality (what one plays and what the audience wants to hear) and venue/travel time restrictions. Dream Theater has the ability and music to play long sets, as does Metallica. In some ways, the best metal bands play progressively at times. Metallica and Iron Maiden are good examples. And as I believe I said in a previous post, Metallica's current lead ax-man studied with the Satch man (Joe Satriani).

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that another Satch student (Steve Vai) sounds alot, at times, like his teacher. This is not a flame, just an observation.

You would think that good musicians would know how to spel R_H_Y_T_H_M. Once can be a typo/transmission loss; more often is a mistake.

On my anti-Rap sig. IMHO, Rap does not qualify as music. Anyone can chant lyrics to a 1 or 2 note dance beat while someone plays with something in the background (usually abusing a synth/drum machine in the process). I AM NOT flaming Rush or Extreme, Their inclusion of short Rap sections in some compositions (Rush, Roll the Bones; Extreme, a couple of works on Porno & 3-Sides) is appropriate and tasteful, not abusive.

    Hey y'all in Ytsejamland!

    A couple of things here.

Uh, like Bracken Odiorne asked what guitars that other guitar playing Ytsejammers played. As for me, I own two Les Pauls, an '87 standard with a special order white finish, and an '85 that is sort of a LP but sort of isn't because it has two cutaways like the Hamer Sunburst, and it has an 'Explorer' style headstock. But as a fan of intense guitar music, I could not be without a Floyd Rose, so my other electric is a Peavey G-90. (Nobody seems to know that this model existed. Too bad. It's a solid guitar after you put a Duncan TB11 Custom Custom Trembucker in it.) And I have an el-cheapo, but somewhat nice, but still a laminated top 12 string that is too hard to play as a 12, so I have it strung 6.

Is it my imagination, or are most of DT's fans musicians? At least half of all the fans I've met seem to play something or another, or have attempted playing a musical instrument in the past. I also begin to wonder at times if I only appreciate DT because I can understand what they're doing, and don't judge music primarily on it's "danceability" factor (if it's not in 4/4, it sucks).

I've been a musician longer than I haven't been. I'm beginning to wonder if only musicians perceive things that make DT great. I know that's probably not true, but, perhaps non-musicians that like DT or other bands that transcend commercialism are intrinsically 'musical' but never actually decided to pick up an instrument.

A Kick into a Dream is a decent bootleg set. It is an audience recording and you can hear a couple of guys singing along to almost every song in unison!

if you can get over that....

the cd does have TOWHTSTS and Innocence faded..

    :)

Someone said something in the last digest about Echolyn doing a few shows with DT starting around July or something. Does anyone have any word on this? Is it going to be inthe states?

ALso, I was cleaning my room and I have all of these metal video compilation tapes that I want to sell. They've got videos from all kinds of metal bands ( and yes they do have dt, fates, rush but I'm keeping those ;) ). Mail me if interested in seeing a copy of the list.

Apparently, Mr. Dominicci has a new demo tape that he was shopping around to labels..I could probably get a copy of it if anyone wants to hear it. But from what I've heard its nothing like Dream Theater..not progressive at all..and sounds like more hard rock than anything else.

oh yea and he played portnoy's wedding last year.

    Still haven't gotten Subconsious yet.

Anyone higher than 179 (or was it 178?) get theirs?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe someone said that TLF seemed slow. My copy on Subcon moves right along. It is definetly faster than the version played on LaTM.

Good news about the convention, Babs. Too bad things couldn't get nailed down before all the students went home. I hope the fact that most of them will have no way of knowing about it will not hurt attendence. But, hey, I REALLY like the scaled down version of the digest. Not looking forward to late August...

Hey, when did Echolyn come to TO? Is there any news on DT coming to TO? I'm sorry if someone has mentioned this, since I haven't been able to read the digest the last week.

Woa yea! I'm listening to it right now, and I'm just thrilled!! Great Music!! No doubt about it.

Eve: A really nice tune. I haven't heard this before. Very nicely done. I dug through some of my lyric sheets and tab music sheets and found EVE there.

ACOS: Same thing. Quite amazing musicianship...

Carry That Weight: Cool!! I like the arrangements. Just rocks. I played it really loud at work... Now all I have to do is borrow the presentation theater and sit back and listen...

Don't Look Past Me: Now this wasn't James was it? It doesn't sound like him. This song compares with the other "not-as-heavy" songs. Cool samples. Has anybody else noticed an odd fade at 0:14? It sounds like there was some sort of power brownage on the mixing board for a second.

Wanted Dead or Alive: Heh! Owwwwwwwww! (very high pitched!!)

To Live Forever: Another song to kick back and relax in the beginning. I'm quite new to the DT boots so I can't compare it to what others have said.

Gorilla Sessions: JP playing. Neat stuff

IMF thingy! I remember I had the piano music to this... but anyways, another piece I blasted at work! I just have to borrow the Altec Lansing 300.1's again!!

Bad Back Jam: Too bad I missed the show, I heard it was legendary.

Heavy: I don't remember the full name for this piece. It is almost jazzy.

Experimental: JP and his Berkley training! He continues to amaze me with his playing.

Tears: A great RUSH cover. At first I was wondering what song it was... It's been a while since I have heard this song anywhere. I'd like to hear DT do some other RUSH covers...

Winter: Yeah... <clap, clap...> KJ almost sounds like Tori at first!!! ;)

Mystery track: Hmm... a mystery all right.

Well... I'm very glad I shelled out $25 for this outstanding disc. Mike, this just ROCKS. I just can't get over this!!! Whew, blow my mind...

Well take care everyone, and enjoy the Subconscious.

This is probably true, since LatM doesn't include this song.
