Ok, I posted something like this about a week ago, but I never saw it in
the digest, so I'll mention it again real quick...

I saw Echolyn in Toronto, and the guys in the band say that Echolyn will
do 10 or more dates with DT between July 15 and August 12 '95.

Subconcious note: ACOS was much better than I thought it would be, and
that's saying alot!! James didn't sound _too_ bad (like he did in LiT).

Maybe LaBrie is a vocalist only. He was trained as an opera singer and in classical, you just play what they give you and learn to interpret it. I'd be more interested in how much input he has in the vocal melodies. I'd imagine he has a lot to say about it. I remember that Sinead what's-her-name song that Prince wrote. People couldn't believe that she could be so emotional singing words she didn't write but I don't see the difference between that and playing music you didn't write. Just my thoughts.

Man, it would be awesome if DT would cover some Green Day. HA! I can't even say it without laughing, he he.

Date: Wed, 17 May 1995 00:29:08 (CDT) From: Ryan J Benedict <rbenedic@gac.edu> To: ytsejam@anthor.arastar.com Subject: Who is Cassandra???? Message-ID: <199505170529.AAA05257@juno.gac.edu>

This is going to be an answer to the question. It is VERY interesting and kind-of long, but read on please. This could open a great debate and what not. As a Classics major, this is very interesting to me, and hopefully to you!

In Ytsejam #821, Chris Caminiti wrote:

<<Anyway, does anyone know who Petrucci is referring to in the line "Maybe I'm just Cassandra fleeting" in Voices? Is it biblical or literature-ical? I didn't know if it was some reference to a famous book I didn't know about. . . I'm still young, you know ;)>>

I was wondering if anyone was going to ask this question! There was a thread just recently going around about the interpretation of A Mind Beside Itself. I have heard the name Cassandra before, so I looked it up. I came up with something very interesting, but I just never really got around to it. Now that someone has asked, I will tell all you Y-Jammers what I have found.

Cassandra is the name of a "slave" girl that Agamemnon (ancient Greek literature) brought back from the Trojan War. I read this story called the Oresteria by Aeschylus. It is the story of the return, betrayal, and death of Agamemnon. The story continues with the death of Clytaemnestra and Aegisthus by the hand of Orestes. He killed them for their deceitfulness and murder of his father, Agamemnon. The story continues on, but . . .

Anyway, Cassandra is able to see the future because it is said that Apollo "lives" inside her. So she is able to see both the near death of Agamemnon and herself. She goes in to try and warn Agamemnon, but is killed by either Clytaemnestra or Aegisthus (it is unclear in the book). These are the lines in the book that Cassandra gives before she dies.

(talking to a leader who is trying to get her to flee from her own death)

Cassandra: No escape, my friends, not now.

Leader: But the last hour should be savored.

****Cassandra: My time has come. Little to gain from flight.

Leader: You're brave, believe me, full of a gallant heart.

Cassandra: Only the wretched go with praise like that.

Cassandra was going to stay and try to save Agamemnon when no one else would--even at the cost of her own life.

What does this mean for the song?

Someone during this thread gave the idea that it was about someone trying to deal with another lover beside his WIFE. (Sorry I don't remember who this was.) I think it has something to deal with a crises in the mind of someone.

I think it is interesting. In the beginning of the song it is ". . . HE used to say to me . . ." Then the song goes on a few lines later, ". . . SHE used to say to me . . ." I think this person with the old thread may have been correct. There is a love [marriage] of these two people. However, the man in the relationship is either 1) having an affair 2) thinking of having an affair 3) going to leave his wife 4) or is contemplating killing his wife or 5) a combination of any of these. The rest of the song is his trying to decide what to do--thinking in his mind. However, it is driving him crazy--the pick up in the feeling of the song coincides.

Know when he says "Maybe I'm just Cassandra fleeting" he thinks that he is going run from the death of his wife (maybe it even was that he had someone try to kill his lover and now what he had done is driving him crazy). All he wants is his sanity back.

I think that in the end he finds out that he must decide himself--he is on his own. He knows there is no one--no "Messiah" to help him.

The fade into The Silent Man is the continuation of his thoughts. Now he has come either to a decision or has completely lost his mind. What does The Silent Man mean? I'm not sure. I think the man just decides to wallow in his own actions and misery.

Well, I hope this answered your question--and then some. Sorry for the length, but I just started and just kept on going. But it was interesting--RIGHT?

    Thanks for stickin' around!

    Later,

    Nypsie

P.S. I wonder if John is even into ancient Greek/Roman Literature? God this is so damn long--sorry!!! Any questions, comments, discusions, or smart remarks can be made at:

    Hi jammers!

It's been a while since I posted so this will possibly be long (as usual):

I wouldn't really want MTV to do an Unplugged with DT, (they said that the Page/Plant thing would be the last one ever, it would be appropriate to close the series with them, but now they've seemed to do more Unplugged-shows than ever: Eagles, Dylan, Hole, Live...), I think that series should be put to rest, but if they did a small gig unplugged that would be fine:

    They'd start off slow:

    * Eve * To Live Forever (similar to the voc.aud. version w/ piano and no drums) * Lifting Shadows Off A Dream (Mike on a small kit and Derek on Hammond) * A Late Summers Rain (yes, short version going right into...) * Voices (will have to make quite some changes) * The Silent Man (feat Myung on violin)

I think that DT is so electrified and that their songs are so much depending on powerful sounds (dbl bass-drums, fat keys, leads...) that it would be extremely hard to convert TTT, PMU etc to unplugged versions. I don't think it would sound good, but they should be able to do for example what I suggested.

Oh, BTW, I'm not a guitarist, I'm a bass-player but I'll tell you anyway: I use the good ol' Fender bass. It's a black Fender Jazz Bass Special, from the late 80's similar to the one played by Duff from Guns'x'xxxx (he's no hero of mine, I promise! ;-))

The guitar-player in my band uses a home-scalloped, totally fucked up Japanese Strat, a complete piece of shit but he refuses to change to another guitar. Oh, and he uses a pick made of stone too, he's strange! ;-)

Has anyone on the list heard of or listened to DT's Live at the Marquee? I saw it at Best Buy. It is an import from Germany and I believe that it is an official release because it has the Warner Bros. label on it. If it is any good I would like to pick it up. I would appreciate any info about this CD. Thanks! Shon Hargis 183500@sbuniv.edu

It is an official release, at least it is in the UK.

I recomend that you buy it because it is good, so is the sound quality

I got this CD awhile back: it's pretty much widely available in the UK. There are three tracks off I&W: Metropolis, PMU and Surrounded, two off WDADU: Fortune in Lies and Another Hand: The Killing Hand and an instrumental jam: Bombay Vindaloo. The Killing hand has a whole new intro with a nice melodic solo from JP and JL does a heroic job of the vocals - a great improvement over Dominici's tragic attempt on WDADU. I actually bought this CD before WDADU, so maybe I'm biased a little. I do agree with the guy who mentioned Dominici's over-enunciation on Only a Matter of Time, though - his style suits this song - I don't think JL's sometimes lazy-sounding style would have come across too well on this song.

Anyway, buy Live at the Marquee!

    Hello!

I don't remember saying that King's X had been dropped...I might have mentioned that my friend said they had...but, I'm not sure.

Anyway, I liked the toilet/sound guy joke.

A friend of mine said he worked with this sound guy who had a sign on his mixer (that faced the band) that said:

    SHIT IN ---> SHIT OUT

I ran sound for my old band at this one place. The openers were GOD AWFUL. The singer couldn't find the key if he had a lock the size of the Empire State Building...the guitarist's tone sucked. I had to coerce him to let me mike his cabinet...

(I remember making a comment to the singer of the headlining band (who was sitting next to me at the board); "Hey...I'm a soundguy, not a miracle worker." I then realized the family of the singer who we'd been lambasting for about 15 minutes was sitting diagonally behind me, well within earshot. OOPS! <grin>)

..and then they COMPLAINED that I sucked at running sound!

Well, when Freak A'Nature (what my old band is now called) got up and started playing, I think everyone in that bar knew it wasn't my fault the other band sounded like shit...

******I'd also like to congratulate BABS for all her efforts getting ******YTSECON coordinated! That was no small feat!!! ****** =) =) =) =) =) =) =) =) ******I hope everyone takes a moment to thank her.

    Anyway, ya'll take care! =)

Hey! At least you GET Headbanger's Ball!!! Here in the states, they cut it out of their lineup and we're forced to listen to (Ho-Hum) "SupeRock" where we listen to old Ozzy and Ratt in between cuts of Dr. Dre and Warren G!!! So eMpTyV's thinking, well, at least metal still sells in Europe... What the hell? Has America turned to mush? Have we all become a bunch of Rap-heads? I say unite DT-jammers!!! Unite, and we shall rise up and crush them! And we'll make our OWN channel! And we'll call it "The Cool Channel"... And we'll play the LONG video version of TtT even though it doesn't exist quite yet...

Sorry if I suddenly got irate. It's just that I want my HB's-Ball back! =(

    Depressedly yours...

    'Jammers,

Someone asked about Live at the Marquee. GET IT!!! They do a few off of WDADU and in my opinion, improve them dramatically (mostly do to James LaBrie). There is also a great instrumental on there. The only bad thing is that there aren't enough songs on it!

Does anyone know what Vinnie Moore is up to? Anything after Meltdown?

Here's a thought... How does everyone pronounce Ytse-jam?

Personally, I say, "Yist-jam" just because originally I thought that Ytsejam was instead spelled Ystejam. Anyway, I learned differently through subscribing to this list, but my pronounciation has stuck.

I think the problem comes in the "ts" sound. Where in the English language do we hear this? Okay, how about "farts". So we could call this the "Yits-jam" I suppose.

What about the letters "tse" in succession? I only know of one word like that... the "Tse-Tse fly". (Pronounced Tsee-Tsee fly) So we could call this the "Yitsee-jam" I guess.

What do y'all think? Any other suggestions? Should we take a poll?
