    Hi Jammers!

This is for the guy who asked about the guitars Ytsejammers play. I play an Ibanez RG550LTD and a Charvel Predator. The Ibanez is an incredible axe (For me!) because you nearly can get every sound out of it, you can make with a guitar. I used to play many other brands (ESP Kamikaze, BC-RICH, MOSER...) but the Ibanez is as if it was made for me. :) My other equipment: ADA-MP1 pre-amp, Rocktron INTELLIFEX, ENGL 2x35 AMP, Marshall cabinets.

DT-related: I would like to know how long it took to write such a song like ACOS. I think this song is incredible. The more often I listen to it, the more I'm astonished. I just can't wait 'til the EP comes out. The sound on Subcon is good (Mike rules !! :) ) but if I think about a studio-version of this song ... incredible.

    Bye.

    Bernd.

I am looking for the album which has (On the) Outside Looking In on it.

    Is it "Parallels" ?

I bought "Chasing Time" thinking that was the one (I had to order it...), but instead I got a sort of "best of" without any lyrics in it.

I'm not sayingthe collection is bad, but as I have "Night...", "No Exit" and "Awaken..." already, it was kind of reduntant, 'cause all I wanted was "Eye to Eye" and "Outside...".

    Hope you can help,

    Tor

PS: Any news on DT lately? I've sort of pushed this mail alias through the grinder (not too much time to read it nowadays - exams and stuff), so I'm not exactly up to date.

Since people are talking about guitars, any other keyboard players on the list and what gear do YOU have? As for me:

Roland JV-90 Kawai K1II Casio CZ-101 (not used, sits in the closet :) ) Emu Proteus-1 Digitech TSR-12 effects (mainly for the proteus as the others have built-in FX) MIDIed through an Atari Falcon030 running Notator Logic 2.0 A little Kawai mixer

    Hey -

    Here's a thought:

Someone give me MTV Europe's address. Let me get a straight answer out of them - I'll tell them I WANT to know the technical reason for it, since I do video professionally! (well, semi-pro, but, they don't have to know that!)

    And, here's another thought:

If someone at eMpTyV "discovered" say, Nirvana, playing covers, with the same "technical problems," wouldn't they do EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to get that tape "working" and "air quality?"

They're blowing sunshine up your asses. If it was Nirvana, Green Day, or whoever is the "artist of the week," they would do everything possible to get it on the air.

Someone send "Vanessa" back a mail that says THAT. It's a crock o' shit. But, this time, mention that you have a People Meter in your home.

Also, the chances of "HBB" coming back are slim to none, and slim just walked out the door...

Why? For the same reason they got rid of Rikki; metal isn't being forced down people's throats by the record companies anymore because they know they can cash in on these "fast food alternative" bands, make huge amounts of money, and take the people in the bands as a tax write-off.

Okay, that's NOT the reason they got rid of Rikki - not directly. He represents that "metal." I hope I'm not overstating the blatantly obvious.

Oh - and one other thought: The new "band of the week": BUSH. Gag. My girlfriend bought the CD. You wanna know what it sounds like? It sounds like Eddie Vedder off the heroin, but, on something else, fronting The Offspring.

Regarding Deebor's ultimate DT medley, I'm not sure I'd like to listen to it and I really doubt DT is going to write it. What you describe is a medley of tunes that might be nice for a live setting but not an actual recording project. It's one thing to quote a passage of one song in another song it's something else entirely to write a song that's just made up of older songs. Portnoy has already said (much to my dismay since I've yet to see them live) that they are not likely to play any WDADU because they don't need to; they have enough material now. I can understand that though. For a long time, Rush wasn't playing any of the older stuff and Neil has even said he doesn't like anything before Moving Pictures. I'd also like to throw in that I just don't hear bits of every song in Erotomania nor do I hear lots of songs within songs. The only one that sticks out is the Space-Dye Vest melody in The Mirror. Maybe I haven't been paying attention or it's just going over my head but I think people are making a much bigger deal of this than it really is.

BTW, anyone have the bass transcription to CiaW? That is damn hard to play. I think it's much harder than Erotomania. Very cool though.

This is in response to the question about DT fans being musicians: I am a musician whose first exposure to DT was when PMU came on the radio. I found out who it was and got the CD two days later. Because my principal instrument is drums (13 years of playing) Mike was the first thing I noticed. However, I started picking up on all the other parts later in the week. I guess I can say being a musician increases my appreciation of DT, but I would've liked them anyway...

My guitar is a Washburn N2 Nuno Bettincourt model in Padauk finish (Red wood grain). It plays like a dream and sounds awesome.

Well, I pronounce Ytsejam as It-see-jam with the emphasis on It. This seems the most logical way if you think about how you pronounce the "sty" part of Majesty (although I called Ytsejam this way before realising that it was Majesty backwards).

Kev's keyboard parts aren't really _that_ difficult and any accomplished pianist/keyboardist shouldn't have any problem with them. Just my observation.

I've played a bottom of the range Charvel guitar through a Peavey Bandit for about three years now - I haven't been able to afford a new guitar/amp. The point I'm trying to make is that you don't really need expensive gear to play well (and I believe that I do). Sorry if I sound a bit arrogant/pissed off, but I've just been flaming this guy who made a load of really shit comments on rec.music.guitar or something - he was really pisssing me off. So, apologies in abundance.

If "anyone" can do this, why aren't you (and me!) millionaires, too? If it's so easy, let's do it! I could use some quick, easy cash. I personally don't care for rap as a music form, but I do respect the ingenuity required to produce some of the better records. On another subject, could someone review the new King Crimson disc? I know some people are big fans, but I would like to read a review targeting fans who have never heard them before. Whoever was plugging the new Coroner CD was right. Very interesting disc. Those enjoying the heavier side of prog-metal will like it. However, the vocals aren't as pleasing to the ear as Ray Alder's or James Labrie's. Along the same lines, I would recommend Anacrusis, especially Screams and Whispers. Very innovative music on the harder edge. That's all from me! No more college forever!! Well, some of us sang IN KEY ;-) BTW, do you people who have this boot like the version of Mission: Impossible. I think it's awesome, Petruccis solos are much better IMO than on the demo-version, he's going for all the Lukather-notes! And also I think the coolest version of Wait For Sleep is on that one too. Ok, the audience is not clapping along very good, not very appropriate either! You should have seen the look on Kevin's face during this. But what makes it great is the small bits of bass and guitar that comes in at the end of the 2nd verse, very jazzy!

    > From: borlangw@dcs.gla.ac.uk > > Technical problems my ass!!!! No, I don't really think so. I talked to her via email today and asked for them to play more unusual footage in general, I knew that it probably wouldn't have much effect. It didn't for exactly the reasons I expected. She said that concerning live-footage, all the bands, record-companies, managements or whatever are very secretive and there are lots of rules. When MTV does a report they usually shoot a lot of footage I reckon, but the artists choose small parts that they want to have aired. Those may be parts that sound especially good, do appeal to a large audience, or even the record company will have a saying. They would probably want them to show something from the 'current single/video'. Artists don't allow MTV to show whatever MTV wants, that could damage the artist's reputation. I can imagine that for us seeing the covers-gig would be amazingly cool, but most other people would not really appreciate it and I don't think DT would want THAT of all things to be shown to a large audience...it then gets synonymous to them. It'll be alright for them to release it on home video because it would just be the DT-fans buying it and hopefully liking it. If aired on MTV lots of possible fans would probably go 'what the fuck's up with these guys, they don't rock, why is he singin like a girlie, why this why that, show the new .... video instead!'. That type of mentality. If MTV shows PMU or Lie the same people would go "oh, this might be interesting, I'll buy this". It all comes down to sales, maybe not to DT, but certainly to their record company....

    .nuff said?

And also I'm getting tired over all the people slagging Vanessa, she's not that ugly, she's just got multi-colored hair ;-) and she's not that stupid. Sometimes she's uninspired but I know I would be if I were to present a show of mostly bands that I don't like. It's not her chosing the videos or the reports by herself, alot of people are involved.

And don't expect the rest of the world to be like yourself. Many people here on the list are just as rabid as the average Rabid RushFan (tm), and think that DT is the most important thing in the world. Well maybe they are to them (maybe to me too) but not to that many other people, you've got to realise that. You don't accomplish anything by saying: he's stupid, he doesn't like DT, and then leave it at that. You should say: well he's stupid and he doesn't like DT but I could do something about that ;-)

    enough ramblin for today!

Hey everyone, My DT collection is pretty well rounded out, but there are a couple of items that I need to still get my fingers on.

The Covers Gig (audio) - If anyone has the audio portion to the entire show, I need it. I think it does exist and that's where Tears and Winter on Subcon came from.

The Gorilla Session - the whole thing, not just the portion included on Subcon.

A Kick Into A Dream - I need dubbed copy of this disc.

    Wake Up - Same

Any other Awake shows, especially Toronto which I was supposed to get from Jeremy Haynes, but we all know what happened to that. I have the Denver and New Haven shows, but I'm interested in a few more.

Anyone interested in trading, send me your bootlist and I'll send you mine.

'Jammers, near and far, young and old, Blessed be - Imagine if you will a small, indoor music hall. The center stage is as new as can be. The audience is small, yet driven. In the eyes of each of them burns a light - is it lunacy or lumination? Faces scarred by a lifetime of empty words and clanging rhythms, they stand in expectation of a Dyonesian display. There is a discontented murmur running through the crowd - the opening band played less than spectacularly and the fans are restless. Anticipation grips each of them like a vise; they couldn't leave now if all of Hell's furies were set on their heels. Then... a chord cuts through the darkness, off-beat drum begins, bass kicks into a ripping counter melody followed immediately by the eery resonance of an organ - the baptism has begun. Dream Theater has taken the stage in Austin, and the inner struggle fades for a time as you stand immersed in liquid poetry. The light surrounds you... Has there ever been a band like this? Can they continue to improve and diversify, yet retain their passion and unity? Where does all the emotion come from, and why can't anyone else seem to get it right like these guys? As a survivor of the '80's, I can tell you that I had given up on metal as an evolving form of rock. While Metallica rocked on (a given) and Dave Mustaine vented his smack-induced anger in very progressive ways, the rest of the genre seemed plagued - even doomed - by cheesy, love-really-sucks-and-I-hate-you lyrics and over-distorted attempts to cover for lack of musical talent. Yet throughout the entire end of that blighted decade, these guys were playing, writing, playing, writing, playing, playing, and yes, transcending the realm of heavy metal completely. Why didn't one of you Yankees in Long Island get the word out? To think of the many nights I lay weeping, praying for deliverance from the ceaseless crap that aired incessantly - proving to me that radio DJ's have no taste. And the New York guys were holding on me - we never denied you people Stevie Ray! In my darkest hour, I found 'Images and Words.' Now, I have sold my soul to Petrucci. There IS none higher. I recently attended the Stevie Ray tribute show here in Austin and beheld, up on the same stage D.T. graced during WUTW '94, a collection of some of the finest guitarists of our time. (For those of you poor bastards who don't live in The Live Music Capital of the World,) I shall recount the names of the gifted who shared that stage: Jimmie Vaughan, Eric Clapton, B.B. King and Buddy Guy - not to mention Eric Johnson and Dr. John. All appearing in tribute to Stevie Ray, and covering his greatest work united. Yet I couldn't help but be distracted by memories of another night, another concert, same stage - yet only one guitarist... would I have wanted to see John on that stage with Jimmie, Eric, B.B. and Buddy? Most vehemently - NO WAY! In the two and a half hour set, he quit playing for no one. In a sort of tag-team jamming, the D.T. wizards would each pause briefly while the rest of the band played on, uniting the entire set into one long and glorious tribute to the muse. Petrucci paused for no man, his guitar ringing out to the final note of the last song. I was transfixed by emotion - I felt drained by the majesty of it all. Nowhere else have I found such a union of emotion and dumbfounding skill; his soul exposed in the haunting wail of guitar. I can now die - content and complete. OK, so I am a fanatic. But, "If I know I'm going crazy I must not be insane." I cannot say enough good things about Dream Theater. They singlehandedly restored my faith in metal. Disks 5 and 6 in my Sony are permanently reserved for I&W and Awake. I suppose when WDADU arrives at Tower (I AM SO STOKED!) it will assume the number 4 slot for a month or two until I can hear each song in my head like an anthem. Can you get an I.V. for this stuff? My top ten list: (how could they let Kevin go?) 10.) 6:00 (...can't hack 'em up with a chainsaw...) 09.) Space Dye Vest (sort of a giantish caamora to me...) 08.) Pull Me Under (tis nobler indeed...) 07.) The Mirror/Lie (admit it! they were made for each other!) 06.) Another Day (isn't DT reason enough?) 05.) A Mind Beside Itself (it's complexity baffles me!) 04.) Scarred (if John hadn't, I would have had to) 03.) A Change of Seasons (couldn't they have played longer?) 02.) Metropolis (Petrucci is God - prostrate yourselves!) 01.) Surrounded (uh,.. uh,.. uhm,.. yeah. What he said...) Now you know - fear me. I'm the guy in the Megadeth T-shirt standing next to you on the elevator. The wild look in my eyes is devotion. I am moved by a higher power - I'm on a mission. All men must be told - we must join in carrying the word to every land. A new religion for an apathetic mass of faceless humanity searching for a reason to exist and to bother even drawing another breath. We shall call it 'Petruccianity!' Our holy text will be the complete lyrical transcription of every Dream Theater song ever written! Cry, oh you people living each day without inspiration. Weep for your salvation... I know that the immensity of this post and the psychosis it bespeaks may intimidate some, but it's my first to the Digest and I wanted everyone to be perfectly aware of my fanatical devotion to these Avatars of Metal: I have looked upon the face of genius, and the Light will surround me until the longest Night darkens my soul forever! <<Besides, what does being a good musician have to do with know how to spel (sic) ;)? That's like saying a good musician would know how to read music. (not a flame and not to be read in an angry tone :).>> I think you had better rethink this one. A good musician should now how to read music. You could give a guitar to anybody, and with enough time and practice (some taking longer than others), they could learn to play stuff easily. However, they wouldn't know what it is they are playing.

However, it is the mark of a good musician to be able to pick up a sheet of staff music and know how to play it, and what it means.

Skill is good, but to be good you need to know what you are playing.

Reading music is essential in any walk of the music world!

This is in no way an attack--or a flame--just an opinion!

I believe Joe Satriani has taught these great guitarists...

    * Steve Vai

    * The guitarist from Primus

    * The present lead guitarist from Metallica

On Hairball's assessment on Satch's playing solos over boring 4/4 beats, I guess you're right. It's just that his melodies are very catchy and emotional. He appeals to the mainstream more than Vai because of this 4/4 "Summersong" style. Though Vai does this a LITTLE... "I would love to" and now "Juice", I think he's just much more experimental than Satch, and sometimes comes out with some fuckin' weird shit. It's like Satch gave him the tools, and now he's experimenting with stuff that's a little more off the edge. (As I've said before, my favorite Vai is when he had a band and a vocalist, and he wasn't in his "experimentation" mode...)

Anyone got the total scoop as to when Vai played a few songs with Van Halen? Like what album that was and what singer VH had at that time?

An even more extreme case is that of the guitarist from Primus. (I don't really have the energy to go up to my room and look up his name right now.) If you've heard the guitar from that band (Particularly "Pork Soda") you're lucky to hear a note that actually MAKES sense. Luckily Les's talent gels the band and keeps it from totally falling apart. Would you believe that with all that, I'm a big Primus fan??

(This post really humbles me. I can't remember the lead guitar of Metallica!!! Is it Lars, possibly?)

Whatever. Sorry about the total lack of DT content.

    Talk atcha l8r, kids!
