Someone wrote in about the Modern Drummer convention in
New Jersey. Mike will be appearing and will be doing more
than just discussing various styles of music. He will be doing
a drum solo. This convention is held annually and all the bigwigs
of the percussive arts come to show their stuff. There will
be many other drummers performing as well. The only one I
can remember offhand is Alan White from Yes. Any one able to
get there should go. Ticket ordering information is contained
in any issue of Modern Drummer from the last two or three months,
along with a list of the other performers.

I got to see Derek w/ DT when they were in
KC. All I have to say about him is that he's an excellent
keyboardist, but he's boring to watch. I didn't see any
energy from him, only him playing (I was up right next to
the stage LITERALLY! I was staring at JP's boots!!!<G>).
But then again I had seen him only 2-3 weeks after he had
learned everything, so he probably was still working real
hard concentrating on the music. BTW, about Subconscious,
O Holy Night- Charlie has a much better voice live than he
ever was on WDADU, matter fact Charlie has an EXCELLENT voice!
(not as good as JL though!)

In response to what type of guitars JAmmers play,
I play a Sigma 6-string accoustic. I've just started and
I have to admit that it was DT that influenced me to
start playing guitar. I've been deciphering DT songs on
    piano for years now!

not that I'm rythmically inclined, or anything, but, did all of you who
were arguing about the time sig(s) catch this from Jen's Portnoy
    Interview transcription?

Portnoy: That intro was something I came up with, just changing the beats
around under that one rhythm. Without those guys ever changing, I change
from a triplet pattern to a 16th-note thing and then I yank one of the
eighth-notes off of it and turn it around. That's just me having fun with
    numbers.

    Just wondering.

Incidentally, I got my Subconsious CD today (FINALLY!). I'm in the middle
of ACoS. I'll type up my track-by-track review off line when I have a
chance to fully listen to it. Gig tonight, so, it'll be a day or two, at
    least.

(scary thought, isn't it? Maybe I should've paid attention at my guitar
    lessons instead of writing songs...)

I think it's mostly because musicians have a true appreciation of DTs talent. All my non-musician friends (and the tone deaf musicians too! <G>) think DT is cheese on a stick! Okay, about the Majesty Jam, here's my opinions on it. If DT ever did something like that, it would probably have to be released as it's own CD!!! Think of how many riffs and great chords there are from just these 3 albums! (Half of awake took about 6 mins (EROTOMANIA)). I think it's really cool when DT does do these theme instrumentals, but they can;t just live in the past... What I love about DT is that every album is a different mood, experience, etc.. If we had a 30-60min song within a song, it would be kewl, but it wouldn't be DT. All I would expect DT to do is do an instrumental witb riffs from songs on the same CD. Except YtseJam, that was its own thing!

I could have delayed this more, but I want to get it underway. A Subconscious update will be along sometime this weekend, since things are almost concluded there... very few copies remain. I apologize in advance for the size of the postings I usually make here.

CYGNUS CD PROJECT UPDATE current to 05/15/95

This is an update on the status of orders and such things on the Rush "Cygnus" CD... made available exclusively to the members of the Ytsejam list before anybody else. :)

DISCLAIMER: Cygnus falls into a grey area under law as an uncopyrighted recording produced in such a manner that at least one facet of the production occurs in a country (namely Italy) in which it is legal to do so. In the USA, it is permissible to sell used import CDs only if they are labeled as such. This is such a CD. Be aware that the various powers-that-be are collecting nothing for this.

Of course, that's all cover-my-butt lawyerspeak. I hope you all will want to be a part of this. I make roughly minimum wage doing it, so you know I'm not out to scam you. In all humility, I appeal to anyone who might not think too kindly of my endeavor, and ask that they might give me the benefit of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)

    1. What the hell is Cygnus? 2. When can I order and how? 3. Orders received. =============================================================================

    1. What the hell is Cygnus?

Hi all, I'm Mike Bahr, humble maker of special edition CDs. Earlier this year, in an effort that is still ongoing, I made available a special, _very_ limited edition Dream Theater CD called Subconscious. I didn't know if the project would work at all, since I had to use my own money to finance the project, and had to be very close on costs to even make it a non-loss financially. But you responded, Ytsejammers!

The CD sold, sold, and sold some more. A scant few copies are still available, but for the most part, the limited edition print of 500 copies, each hand-numbered and signed in gold by myself, were snapped up in a mighty hurry by all of you, the most devoted fans of Dream Theater on earth.

And I do mean _Earth_! I got orders from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Israel, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Greece, and a few more countries I am sure I have forgotten to mention. Truly, the WORLD made Subconscious a success for me and for the Jam, so I'm going to hope that Cygnus will be another one! My heart goes out to all of you in every country of the world for joining in!

What I did was work with a pressing plant using rental equipment and some of my own as well, and an exhausting three months of preparation, packaging, and mailing, not to mention production of the CD, and a million other things, and made it a reality. I was relieved beyond words when I read the positive comments people had for it online.

Cygnus is the project I will do to fill the gap between Spring 1995's Subconscious and Autumn 1995's WHEN DREAM AND JAMES UNITE. Cygnus will be a recording from an ultra-rare Rush show, the single best sounding Rush show in existence, from the mystical Hemispheres tour of 1978-79. I will only print 1000 copies... beyond that, there shall be no more.

Here's the information on the show.

Title: Rush "Cygnus" Source: True soundboard reel-to-reel, original length 83 min Running time: 75 min Venue: Convention Center Arena (TCC Arena), Tucson, Arizona Date: November 20, 1978 Generation: Transferred to DAT from a 2nd gen analog from the master. Quality: Beyond comparison. Higher than "Oakland '92" and "Pinkpop".

Setlist: Intro Anthem A Passage to Bangkok By-Tor and the Snow Dog Xanadu The Trees Something for Nothing Cygnus X-1 Book 1: The Voyage Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres I. Prelude II. Apollo III. Dionysus IV. Armageddon V. Cygnus VI. The Sphere Closer to the Heart Circumstances A Farewell to Kings La Villa Strangiato

Also on the original tape was a cut-off version of the beginning of 2112, the Overture and then half of the Temples section. In order to make Cygnus fit onto a single CD, I cut those seven minutes out of the DAT. Everyone has a live 2112 on ATWAS album, anyway.

Now that I sort of "have the hang of it" where CDs are concerned, I will be trying to put together some colorful art for the CD and cover. For those who didn't get one, Subconscious had a gold-on-black motif, much like the Terminator-2 and Star Wars laserdisc box-sets. It was dignified, and direct. And now, for Cygnus, I want to really make people say "wow!"

    2. Where can I order and how?

Okay, here's the deal. Anyone remember how long it took my blanks shipment to get to me when I did Subconscious? Twenty-nine days, it did. And I plan to place the order for Cygnus at the end of this week. (5/20 or so) Now, this time, I originally had planned not to even ANNOUNCE Cygnus until I had the CDs in hand. However, so many of you are leaving for the summer and/or want early copies like last time, that I will go ahead and do a pre- order deal again.

Here's how it works. I don't want anyone feeling uncomfortable sending me a payment when in all truth, your CD might take a month to get to you. So I will divulge as much information as I can to make it a sound decision on your part. For those who wish to wait, there will be NO penalty; simply order when I get the CDs in shipment. For those who order early, in an effort to reward their confidence in my project and in gratitude for them getting the ball rolling early, I will be shipping CDs out in the order they were received... thus, you'll get it sooner. Furthermore, this time I'm going to run a little contest. A random ten people in the first 150 orders (this will be done with a computer randomizer) will get a free copy of a special video montage, just as an added bonus and a thank-you for being a part of this. I think I might make two or three different montages and throw them in at random into the sets... one Rush, one Dream Theater, one Live, one Queensryche and maybe one of all sorts of progressive bands. Or more! :)

    How to order!!!

Remember when Subconscious came out, and I said certain costs were permanent, and had gone into the production cost? I didn't lie... Cygnus will be CHEAPER than Subconscious was. The price will be $23. For anyone in Canada ordering, add only $1 for postage. For anyone outside North America, add $2 for postage (so it would be the same price as Sub) and that will take care of it. There's a lot of bean-counting that I do to come up with those numbers, so trust me, it's what it amounts to. Plus, you can order as MANY Cygnus discs as you want, because you on the Jam are getting a shot at it before I offer it anywhere else.

Please use a money order if you can. The reason is simple: it's safe! I know you paid and you know I have it (it's traceable). And you know if you don't get a CD or a refund, I'll go to jail.

For international orders, I will indeed accept cash if you wish. I urge you to be careful, because every order for Subconscious that contained cash made it safely to me, but that might not always be the case. I don't want anybody to lose their money. For orders of 2 or more Cygnus discs, a travellers cheque or international money order is economical to use. If you decide to use cash, please wrap it tight in a thick envelope and try to hide it, so that nobody will steal it.

Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery. It will actually be closer to 4 or 4 and a half weeks, but in order to be safe, I'm giving you the extreme possibility. Understand that, as with Subconscious, I'll be making every effort to get them sent fast and soon. And now, I know a few things I can be doing to get them done faster than I did with Sub... like pre-making the mailing lists, supplies, process, etc.

    Here's what to do.

Send your payment, along with your Name, Address to ship it to, Internet email address (in case I need to contact you), how MANY CDs you want, and, optionally, your phone number. I say optionally, because I know some of you want to keep them unlisted.

Send all this to: Michael Bahr 3175 N. Price Rd. #1066 Chandler, AZ 85224 (USA)

If you wish to speak to me for any reason, including questions, comments, suggestions, or you just want to chat with another dedicated fan of Rush and Dream Theater, you are very welcome to call me at 1-602-777-0501. I am usually home between 11am and 9pm Mountain Standard Time. Please use this phone number with proper discretion, however, as I will be very confused if you call me at 3:00 in the morning, or if a bunch of women who thought it was a phone-sex line start calling. :)

    3. Orders received.

This reflects paid orders, not reservations, so if you have a reserve, don't panic when you don't see your name here. :)

Hello there, Outside looking in is on the new Fates Warning album, "Inside Out." OLI is a cool song, but you really have to check out the song "Monument." A great song! By the way, after Monument is a hidden track called Schroeder's Revenge that isn't on the track list because of copyright problems (Chas. Schultz wasn't into it or something). This is easily one of their best albums! Is Chasing Time out in the states yet?

Personally, the other day I made up about 2 verses of a country song _on the spot_ for my girlfriend. (Note: IMHO, Country and Rap music are very similar. Both are vocals-based with mindless music in the background...) Mind you, my lyrics were corny, but if I can make up something that sounds semi-legit _on the spot, imagine what I could do if that were my livelihood!

My point is, if I dedicated my life to it, I think I could surely make Rap music. I'd probably make a lot of money at it too. (As Hairball said, it's not that hard!) It's simply a matter of self-respect. Am I going to sell my soul to a record company while I put out shit music? How would I sleep at night knowing that I'm creating music that THEY want as opposed to what _I_ want? How could I go on living knowing I'd never reach my music potential?

Long story short - I'm poor, but I'm not THAT poor. I'm also white. =)

It made me laugh more than once. =) Personally, I think the band is okay. Not great. Just okay. Actually, that's how I feel about almost all alternative music. If I like an alt. band, usually it's the lyrics that get me. (Pearl Jam is the best example...)

    Jam on!

    Hey,

I was thinking the other day. Most of you guys, like myself are either "obsessive Compulsive" or Fanatical about Dream Theater. At work, I use the "Dream Theater Interactive" as sort of a screen saver. When I leave the computer, I start the interactive demo and go to the screen with the Awake Album cover and have it play a song. Anyway to get to the point, Is anyone out there a talented enough programmer to create a "Dream Theater" screen saver, and if there was enough jammers, could we generate enough interest in it to compensate the programmer(Also, we probably would have to get DT's permission for copyright laws). I figure since it kinda already exists (the DT interactive), all that would need to be done is create a screen saver "engine" to active it, and perhaps lengthen the sound bytes. Also, we could perhaps expand it to include the I&W songs and images. Anyway, I just wanted to know what you guys thought.

    Until Later,

Well, I don't know about you, but I don't have access to a drum-machine and a fake bass machine (or whatever the hell they use in rap.) Bascially, well really I don't know how rap artists get discovered, but I'm sure you and I could it better than they. No joke. of course, then we have to define better. most people would say Yes's "Close to the Edge" sucks. in fact my father commented on it (and this is a quote here) "It sounds like a million different beats going on at one." he didn't realize that there WAS such a thing as a different time sig than 4/4, so he thought it sucked. however in truth it's a damn tricky piece. also all the weird synth and fast playing scared him a little. :) So, in his opinion (and most peoples) Yes sucks. But in our opinion, complicated music is better than uncomplicated music. But who are we selling our music to? The dummies of the world. that is unless we haven't sold out, which almost all bands too. except for King Crimson, see comments below.

    > > On another subject, could someone review the new King Crimson disc? I > know some people are big fans, but I would like to read a review targeting > fans who have never heard them before.

In about 45 minutes David Letterman will be starting and King Crimson will be on it! If you are reading this by 10:00 on Friday night, go watch it! should be quite good, even if it will only be a few songs.

King Crimson's new CD will be a delight to the heavier-oriented listeners of Prog and the Prog-fundamentalists. It delicately weaves a web of intricate music with melodic and rhythmic oddities.

    ------------------------------

In short, if you want to scar a young girl for life, buy her this CD. Her ears will be bleeding from the strange melodic lines in no time.

One last thing to say: TURN IT UP LOUD. You won't be disappointed.

I have to say that I really prefer Satriani to Vai. I think if they have anything in common it's TONE. Their guitar sound is very similar. <Maybe it's the Ibanez's.> Of course, I would still have to stick w/ Satch on this point--Vai's lead tone is just soooooooo anemic. It has no presence. It's like he's putting all low end into it because he thinks it's cool, w/o realizing that he needs some more BITE. Joe's rhythm sound is like Steve's-- really creamy, which I'm not too fond of, but his lead sound is bright and present w/ just enough 'verb and delay to make it sparkle.

I also think that Joe's playing is far superior to his pupil's. Joe Satriani has an unbelievably emotional sense of melody; "Barouque" could bring a tear to anyone's eye, and "Flying in a Blue Dream" is a classic; but, when the time comes, Satch can rip it up like anything. Vai's soloing depends a lot more on "tricks" and effects: take away the wah and the Eventide Harmonizer from Vai and his melodies would be forgettable. The melody of "Summer Song" says the same thing even if you would play it on a kazoo.

Of course, the two are playing in different styles: Satch does Rock'n'Roll, with the occasional delve into blues and swing. Vai has a style all his own. I guess that comes from Zappa's influence. I will never deny that Steve Vai is not talented--I've heard plenty of Vai stuff that has made me do a double- take. I just think that the "experimental" Vai is sometimes just so "out- there" that his music lacks cohesion. You know my favorite Vai song? It's "Still My Bleeding Heart" off of Sex & Religion. <That 12-string tone is killer!> I think the band keeps him from reachin into his bag of tricks TOO often.

    Sorry about the length!

A good musician should now how >to read music. >You could give a guitar to anybody, and with enough time and practice >(some taking >longer than others), they could learn to play stuff easily. However, they >wouldn't know >what it is they are playing.

Check it out man. I can read pretty good and I'm a big proponant of being able to read but that doesn't neccessarily make me a good musician, only a literate one. Also, knowing how to read has no bearing on wheather or not you know *what* you're playing. I practive scales and arpeggios all day without looking at a single written note and I know exactly what I'm playing.

    >However, it is the mark of a good musician to be able to pick up a sheet >of staff music and >know how to play it, and what it means.

No it's not. That person would have to be a competant musician to be able to sight read something, interpret it and understand it but he's not neccessarily a good musician nor are all good musicians neccessarily capable of sight reading.

    >Skill is good, but to be good you need to know what you are playing.

Agreed. But being able to read has nothing to do with knowing what you're playing..

    >Reading music is essential in any walk of the music world!

Guess again! What are you, a classical musician? In classical, only, does your statement hold. It's very possible to be a great and successful musician in any other genre without being able to read

    >This is in no way an attack--or a flame--just an opinion!

Ditto (although, more than just an opinion). A reminder, I'm a strong believer in learning to read. It opens many doors from expanding the music available to you to getting work to making it much easier to learn Erotomania :)
