    Hi there,

    >On my anti-Rap sig. IMHO, Rap does not qualify as music. Anyone can chant >lyrics to a 1 or 2 note dance beat while someone plays with something in >the background (usually abusing a synth/drum machine in the process). I AM >NOT flaming Rush or Extreme, Their inclusion of short Rap sections in some >compositions (Rush, Roll the Bones; Extreme, a couple of works on Porno & >3-Sides) is appropriate and tasteful, not abusive.

Okay...It seems as though I'm the only rap fan who's going to defend rap's MUSICALITY (am I the only one?). First let me start off in actually relating RAP to DT (brace yourselves). DT is not on MTV. Most of what MTV plays nowadays is rap. BUT.....the rap I listen to, however, is NOT on MTV. Most of us have ventured out to find bands such as Dream Theater without the spoonfeeding of MTV. Well, all I am saying is that there is MUCH MORE to rap than what MTV shows. Bands such as the Pharcyde, the Roots (both of whom are on Lollapalooza's second stage this year), KRS-1 (he's just one guy), Boogie Down Productions (KRS-1's old band, now defunct), the Heiroglyphics, Souls of Mischief, Disposable Heroes of Hipocrisy (also defunct), De La Soul (yeah yeah, they were on MTV in like 1988) and many others are NOT on MTV and, IMHO contain many good thoughts as well as poetry that I personally find quite pleasing. They are the one's who move rap towards a positive and, dare I say it, PROGRESSIVE level. But, as I said before, neither they nor DT are on MTV. I believe that these groups contain a good sense of musicality in their own realm...I mean you can't compare DT to rap. But you can't compare DT to Madonna either, can you? Many of these groups also play their own instruments, I might add (I won't even get into the Beastie Boys). There are also bands that use rap too mesh with other styles...we all know that Rage Against the Machine's lyrics are rap....but are they rap? I argue no....other bands such as Soul Coughing (one of my faves), Alphabet Soup, and G. Love and Special Sauce (another must have...blues induces rap! woo woo!) break the bounderies between rap and other various styles of MUSIC to make it a style all their own. I just can't imagine saying that rap is not music. I really don't think it is our judgements to say that. You may say that it is basic compared to other styles (even though I argue a lot of thought goes into rap...at least the rap I listen to). You may say it's BAD music...but nonetheless, music. Any thoughts, opinions would be greatly appreciated.

But enough of that....now on to Vai. I am quite surprised that none of you have thought that his experimentation came from his playing days with FRANK ZAPPA. Well, IMHO, I'd have to say that Zappa was one of the most experimental artists of ALL TIME, and to say that he didn't rub off on Stevie would be just NUTSO! Especially since this was before his solo days, Whitesnake, and David Lee Roth (not Van Halen). Anyone else agree or disagree?

Well I think I've rambled on too long, so I'll await any opinions, gripes, and complaints from what I've written.....have a nice day.

I say drummers unite, let us crush those smartass good for nothing guitar players ! You don't have to have a 1000$ guitar in order to be good. You could have a 100$ premier 1970 drum kit like I do! Never mind the bass drum pedal is making strange squeaky sounds and the snares are falling apart - you can ROCK with it! See ya!

Hey Jammers. I play an Ibanez aussi, but am I the only person here who likes their S series better than the RG series? I love the feel of the sleek slim mahogany body, and my guitar looks awesome in its transperant red finish. I play through a zoom 1012 and a Boss Metal-Zone, into a fender amp. I really want an ADA-MP1.

I'm shopping for an amp as well. I want something good for a small price i.e. the guy who got a 350W amp for $100. Right now, I'm playing through a piece o crap Crate 15W amp. If anyone is willing to part with a more powerful amp in exchange for a little $, e-mail me!

My idea was that "The Majestic Jam" wouldn't include just parts of old songs but new material as well, which provides the transition to other songs. Also, the song wouldn't actually have any segments that sound exactly like their predecessors, they would be redone and reworked until some of them end up being very obscure. Kind of like Erotomania, except with all the albums, not just one. Again, this is just an idea, and I don't really expect DT to do it anytime soon. Just on their tenth album :)

Yeah, that would be pretty cool, having the Majestic Jam on an album all its own. Then people who wouldn't support the idea wouldn't have to buy it.. but then it wouldn't really sell much... hmmmmm.... :^\`| (<-I was trying to draw a guy holding his hand up to his chin in deep thought. nevermind..)

Two weeks ago today was one of the best days for new cds I've had in a long time. I _finally_ found a copy of King Crimson's THRAK (I was beginning to consider a record store conspiracy to prevent me from owning it). And apparently lending the Kevin demos to a friend increased my karma points to the bonus level, because I came home to find _Subconscious_ in the ol' mailbox. Dilemma, dilemma, which to listen to first? So they've been dominating my disc player for two weeks now, and finally have the time to talk about them.

King Crimson for newbies: I have just recently been introduced to KC, so I think I can provide this insight - *get it*! Get VROOM, too. THRAK has a wide variety of songs, from light tunes that could be radio hits if they weren't too good for that medium, to instrumentals that could leave you with a vacant stare and drool running down your chin if you are only used to 4/4 and straight, predictable melody lines - the complexity would fry your neurons. I would compare the instrumentals to some of Primus' stuff, in that the first couple times it may sound like random noise, but eventually you find yourself grooving to a beat you really can't put a finger on - quite subtle. William Wright <wwright@galaxy.galstar.com> summed it up pretty well with:

    > In short, if you want to scar a young girl for life, buy her this CD. Her > ears will be bleeding from the strange melodic lines in no time.

    :^) :^) :^)

    > One last thing to say: TURN IT UP LOUD. You won't be disappointed.

Whole-hearted agreement: LOUD it must be. I can't wait to see them in Seattle on 22jun. They were on Letterman last night? Bummed I missed it, but successful first dates take precedence (see, I'm not a totally pathetic music fiend.)

Quick Primus tie-in: it makes much more sense that Larry LaLonde and Kirk Hammett took lessons from Satch when you realize they're all from the SF Bay Area.

Subconscious: Thank you, Mike! This is my first (and probably only) boot. I'm just too much of a stickler for sound quality (and lack of inane crowd prattle). The opportunity to hear unrealeased tunes, at quality better than that of the original boots, is much appreciated.

I like darn near everything on this disc (although Gorilla Session only every other day or so). Some random thoughts: Eve was released as the bonus to the Japanese _Awake_, right? I'm going to have to try to dig that up, now. I will definitely be near the front of the line for the ACoS EP when it is released. Never thought I'd utter the statement, "O Holy Night _rocks_". I really like their version of "Carry That Weight," even though I've never been a huge fan of the Beatles. I liked Charlie's voice before, but even more so on these songs. I'd like to hear more along the line of Myung's "Experimental" in the future (not total direction, just flavors hear and there). "Wanted" is hilarious! I played it at the office, and the secretary said, "Is that a new Bon Jovi live album? I love that song," and I could hardly contain my laughter - "Gimme a gun, I'll shoot him". I am now in the process of trying to obtain a high quality vid or aud of the Uncovered gig (yeah, I know I said _only_ boot earlier, but...)

Aaaagh!! It's like you're reading my mind!! I walk around campus, mumbling DT lyrics under my breath, fingering out Kevin's keyboard stuff into the air... people must think I'm some sort of wacko! I just can't help it though. I can remember one day when all I said to myself was 'Evil genious, this secret plan must be dealt with a losing hand...'. The chords kept ripping through my thoughts, my hand kept tapping my leg, the desk, my pen magically became a drumstick. I eagerly grab guitar tab, and the first thing I do when I get home is to transcribe it to keys, just to see how close (or sadly, how far) I am from being able to flawlessly imitate what Dream Theater has crafted. I must have played Kevin's intro and long solo from TTT 1000 times, and I still can't do it right! Every compilation tape I make features DT in one way or another, but _no-one_ I know appreciates them, or their kind of music, the way I do. It's really sad actually: DT (and the genre) music, with all it's effects and impact on the activity of my brain and my emotions, yet no one to share it with.

Ok, but if there's supposed to be a point to this post, this is it. I think those of us that listen to this kind of music, commonly called 'progressive', are alone at the top of the aural spectrum. Maybe it's just me, or us, but this stuff does _so_ much for me, I wonder if we're luckier than everyone else to be able to appreciate this, or just crazy?

Although this question has probably been answered in some earlier digest, before I subscribed: Why doesn't DT's Pull Me Under have a 'Real' ending rather than just the cutoff, and what do they do with this in live performance. Do they change the ending, or do they bridge into another piece? I've never had the opportunity to see/hear any live recordings as of yet.

I've got a few things to say... I hope I don't forget them before I get to the end!

Does anyone think that there is someone else singing the second verse of O Holy Night? I think it is someone else or maybe Charles is just singing different than he is in the 1st verse. I figured I'd ask this question now that about 500 more people have heard this song thanks to Mike and Subcon.

I like Chris Cintrons rendition of Don't Look Past Me (or should I say Look?) better, although that version doesn't have any guitar in it. It was kinda cool, I didn't listen to the other versions for a long time and I never noticed that the Chris version didn't have guitars and then one day I decide to try one of the other versions and it sounded like a completly different song with guitars in it!

Someone inthe last jam was looking for a good keyboard for around $500. I would say to go with the Yamaha PSR-510. It's a newer of the 500 that you are using. I'm not sure what the differences all are but I think the main was is that this one is configured to the General Midi standard so most midi files should be ready to play without doing alot of doctoring of voices. It has onboard effects such as delay and built in DSP for Hall, Room, Plate etc. reverbs. You should easily be able to find it for $500 maybe even $450.

Does anyone on here have a Tascam 644 Midistudio that they would like to sell? I'm in desperite need of one of these. I'm gonna jump off of a bridge if I don't get one soon.

I think I actually remebered everything I wanted to say! huh huh cool...

In all fairness to Mike and the engineer who probably pulled their hair out, it sounds pretty good over all. I don't think I really WANT to go into specifics, because I'd just be pointing out engineering things that they REALLY had little control over, which I understand.

So, let me just say that this CD is a very cool thing to have, and Kudos to Mike and the engineer-type (grin) who put it together for an outstanding effort.

And, for any of you who might have gripes about little sound drop outs - there's not much they can do to fix them once they're on tape. There's not much ANYONE can do to fix 'em! That big wipe-out on one of the tracks actually sounds like the tape (I assume it was a DAT) got overloaded - it's right after a big crescendo, so, that's probably what caused it. I'll listen again later - right now, I have to be to work in about 6 hours (and have to get up in about 3.5)...so, I'm gonna bolt.

Later all, Hairball, the misquoted train engineer.

    (hey, who did that?)

hacks me off too. a LOT. my guess is this: they lined up two bands, KC and the other band who was on it (forget their name.)

KC played such cool songs the audience hated em, booed em off the stage, just becaues Fripp started shredding on his mellotron while the two drummers started playing in different tim sigs. And everyone loved the other band. Well Letterman isn't live because at that time it would be 4 in the morning, so they had it pretaped, and they just put the more popular band on there. but who knows?

I'm sure pissed though, because KC isn't coming anywhere near Tulsa, OK this year and they're one of, if not the best, live acts to see.

    >Anyone know the source of the female vocal singing samples used in Kev's "shallow"? I heard the original song (some dance thing) while in a cafe recently. I didn't know it was sampled (thought it was his jd800 or something) and am curious. Not that I'd buy a dance album -- just curious :)<

Actually, I mentioned this particular tid-bit early on, but I don't think anyone was paying attention! :(

The vocal sample is of the Icelandic vocalist Bjork, formally from the band The Sugarcubes. It comes from "Crying," off her solo debut album (it's used in the chorus).

Something I didn't mention the first time, though, is that in Bjork's song there's a line that says something like, "Crying because I'm *shallow*." Coincidence? I really don't know.

So I have a very eclectic music collection! :)

I don't think the Majestic Jam is a good idea, but I'd still buy it.

Colony Music (I think that's the name of it) on Broadway and 49th will probably have it. They had the I&W book the week it came out.

Hope that helps, good luck in finding it,

Oh, this is funny. Yes, that Kevin Moore was a real dynamic stage presence, wasn't he? Let's face it. Most keyboardists I've seen who really try to look 'into it' with lots of body and such just end up looking like jackasses. Don't get me wrong. Keys are cool, but the physical impact just isn't there - not like crunching on a power chord or cracking a drum.
