Wether you like chart rap or not is irrelevant, that are some great gendre
fusion groups kicking around anyway. Rage against the machine has be
mentioned but one that takes it to the limit is a British band called
Senser, with tracks such as Age Of Panic, and No Comply, their music will
hit hard enough to satisfy the most hardened Ytsejammer, just skip past the
couple of dance orientated tracks if you are too narrow minded to give them
    a try...

I disagree that it's harder to show emotion while playing keys than other instruments. Look at Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis! Now I doubt anyone could put as much into any instrument as Mike Portnoy, but I think it depends more upon the person rather than the instrument. And look at Nuno--he's a really talented guitarist, but he always looks like he's just getting through the night--like he's _playing_ but not _performing_. He always looks pissed off at something or someone, anyway.

And _that's_ what I hate about Kevin Moore. He just looked like he not only would rather be _somewhere_ else, but _anywhere_ else than up on stage playing DT's music. I really have never seen him crack a smile on stage. His whole attitude pissed me of. The other guys looked like they were having a good time, why couldn't he? Derek smiles. Derek moves. Derek looks at the other guys. Derek's faster anyway. I think Kev was a better soloist, but all that soloing ability isn't really going to help him on the crap he's doing now, is it? I'm glad Kevin Moore is gone.

Well I got some of the German dates (thanks Ties) but it looks like they will be playing big festivals over there. I really don't want to spend a shit load of money to only see DT play for 20 minutes. Does anyone know of any dates with DT as the headliner? I thought someone mentioned that the boys were going to be in Holland or something. Dows anyone have more info on this? I guess I could take the train from Hamburg, Germany or something. Any help would be appreciated, just e-mail me please.

I just thought I'd share this. Last night I had the weirdest dream (well, all my dreams are weird) that I was at a DT concert. There were tons of people but no seats and tons of space. I think it was outside. There was a big group of people wearing read shirts that had U2 in black on the front. They thought it was a U2 concert and wanted U2 to play. I was right up front watching. Then they took a 2 hour intermission and I was in a room talking to Petrucci. He was really cool - hey, it's my dream. But I didn't see Myung and I really wanted to meet him. Petrucci and I talked for a long time but I don't know what we talked about. That's about all I can remember. I thought it really wierd. Hope you enjoyed it :).

Two items. First, an unsolicited plug. The audience bootleg video that "Allan" of Toronto has (box532@idirect.com) is really decent. From the I&W tour, 1993. The sound quality is definitely better than Live in Long Island and never falters. Have traded with Allan a few times and never any problems. Cash to Toronto and tapes back to me in short order. Just be prepared to receive something in the mail that supposedly looks exactly like what the Unibomber sends.

Secondly, if someone has the Dance of Eternity (single disk from Luxembourg), I would appreciate a favor. If the disk's liner notes contain and address, phone number or fax number for the company that produced the CD, please forward this information to me. Please send this info to me directly and dont post it to the list. Thanks.

Howdy all! I just got a call today from my local music store. They told me that they just got a note from Warner Bros. about the Awake Tab book and it said that it's "Permanently out-of-print". What's up with that? Anyone have any idea why this is?

I really need to get this tab book, if nothing else to get the complete tab for "The Silent Man". If anyone would happen to see one and would be willing to pick it up for me, I will pay you all postage and even a small finder's fee. If anyone can do this for me, please leave me e-mail. Thanks a bunch!

    Whoever asked, read:

The ending on the CD is how they end it live. They just stop there. Bang.

Most people think there's something wrong with their CD when that happens.

The end resonance was simply left off...but, they (straight out of Mike's mouth) DID STOP PLAYING...and that's how it was.

    Hope this helps.

Ya know, somehow that doesn't surprise me. Every time I peek into that pitiful little newsgroup I have to laugh at some of the questions they ask:

"Since there's a Metropolis Part I, where can I get my hands on Part II?"

"Has Dream Theater made any more albums besides Images and Words and Awake?"

"Ya know, I've been listening to DT a lot lately and ya know, it's hard to dance to."

My advice: Stay away from this newsgroup at all costs! The people there are basically people who post once or twice because they heard "The Silent Man" on the radio and would like to hear more about this "Folk Band". =) Stick with the 'Jam. We'll set ya straight. ;)

the ending to PMU *IS* a 'Real' ending. wut's wrong w/ it? so it pisses some ppl off. so wut? i like it :) both times i saw DT live (I&W: Bayou, DC and Pier 6, Balmer. yeah yeah, so i missed the Waking up the World Tour :\ ) they ended PMU exactly like the album. it shows how tight the band is.

The following appeared in Ytsejam #827:

    >>Is it my imagination, or are most of DT's fans musicians? At least half >>of all the fans I've met seem to play something or another, or have >>attempted playing a musical instrument in the past. I also begin to >>wonder at times if I only appreciate DT because I can understand what >>they're doing, and don't judge music primarily on it's "danceability" >>factor (if it's not in 4/4, it sucks). > >I think it's mostly because musicians have a true appreciation of >DTs talent. All my non-musician friends (and the tone deaf musicians >too! <G>) think DT is cheese on a stick! All I can tell them is I'd like >to see Stone Gossard or some of the other alternative bands play anything >by dream theater!!

Well, just don't tar all of the non-musical with the same brush! I attempted to dabble in flute, piano, and guitar, without a whole lot of success. (My sister is the wonder who can play a song after only hearing it a few times!)

I should say that my hubby thinks I'm too hard on myself... When we get the dream house, with the sound proofed room for his drums, he has told me we'll have an awesome computer-keyboard set-up, so I can "write," in a way...

Let's think about art for a moment... Just because a spectator can't identify the imposto paint style or talk foreground vs. background, does that mean s/he can't appreciate the painting? The uneducated spectator sees the overall work, the efforts of all the individual components - and isn't that what the artist intended? (Pointilism is just a bunch of dots when you look up close, but, stand back, and, wow!) And, on occasion, that spectator might pick up on those smaller parts...

So, I can't write music or identify a time sig change...but I can hear particular sounds and isolate them...I can hear the interwoven melodies in many DT pieces... Maybe DT is a "band's band," but it's not an exclusive club. :)

The do this because they want to. The way I heard it, the couldn't think of a really good ending. But, they had all those layers of guitars and keyboards and voices and they figured it would be cool just to stop the song dead in its tracks for effect.

    >and what do they do with this in live performance. Do they change the ending,

Nope. That's how they play it.

    Anyway, I think it's a cool way to end a song. :)

    Hi all!

A few common questions have crept up about Cygnus and I thought I'd answer them all at once here. :)

YES, you can already send orders. When I _do_ get the CD shipments in, I will be sending them out in the order I originally got your payments.

YES, you can wait if you want. Like I said, the incentive of getting your CD sooner is just my way of saying "Thank You" for ordering early and helping with the effort.

NO, you don't _have_ to reserve a copy before you order. You may, if you like, and I'll be glad to. But there will be enough to go around, I promise! Nobody on alt.music.rush or .progressive gets to order this until the Jam has had its share! :) You can, if you like, just send orders outright. Remember to include your vital information! :)

YES, it will take about a month before I get the blanks shipment for pressing, just like last time. That's why I'm offering early ordering as an option. I'm doing everything in my power to get it done faster.

and YES, I THANK YOU, all of you, for your kind words for me and these projects. Thanks for being a part of this!

I play an Ibanez RG770 through a Crate GX80 (w/celestion). No effects. Period. I also have a 20W Matrix amp which kicks, basically because of humbuckers on the guitar. Single coils blow, they are the biggest reasons that strats suck. This is all my opinion. If you're a blues blues blues player, a strat is nice, but their tone is weak.

Jeff - AP tests? which ones? I took 5 last year and AP CHEM test this year. Last year I scored: Calc (5), Macroecon (4), Microecon (3), Gov & poli sci (2) and comp. gov (2). ouch on the gov.

One of the things I like best about DT and proggy music in general (like the DIXIE DREGS) is that every time you listen to it it gets better. BTW, I just used a reference to The Mirror in a music theory paper I wrote to get out of marching in a parade that takes place after I get out of school. It'll confuse my band director so much, he'll have to give me an A. I hope so anyway.

Well, they could have also heard "Lie". I've never heard "Silent Man" on the radio.

My advice would be to enlighten these people, answer their questions, and maybe get Dream Theater a few new fans. At the very least, DT would get an extra sale- even if the people didn't like the album.

Excellent point. If DT is using time changes and key changes just to impress musicians, then they would *only* have musician fans. The fact that DT can impress non-musicians means that the time changes and key changes have done their job. It's the total picture that matters. They utilize their impressive talents to paint a more beautiful picture.

    SUBCONSCIOUS CD Update!!

    Current update: 5/21/95

Due to a cancellation, there are some copies still available! Go ahead and send orders in... CHECK THE NEW ADDRESS LISTED BELOW. If you wish, email me at garion@indirect.com to make sure I have a copy to save for you. I do have some more left still.

Keep an eye on the Ytsejam as people are posting reviews of Subconscious right and left. So far, nobody wants to kill me. For this I'm relieved. :)

THE BLANKS ARE HERE! THE SHIPMENTS ARE HAPPENING! :) I'm currently _caught up_ with shipments, which is about 350 at current. I am trying to stay with less than a week lagtime with new orders. I am also finally sending out all the freebies! (to all five of you who helped provide the source tape for this endeavor).

    1. Orders received 2. A quick review: what the hell IS Subconscious, and how can I get it? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

    1. Orders received

Here is a brief list of the orders that I have received, paid, and the CD numbers you will all be getting... if you are on this list, I have your order IN MY HAND and you are DONE, FINITO... all you need to do is kick back, relax, toss back a Kypler's, and wait for my CDs to come in the mail to me, and subsequently, to you. :) Chances are you have it already. I _am_ keeping a copy of this list, in case future authenticity issues arise, you can be assured of the full _value_ of your Subconscious CD. Given the number of DT albums sold total, there is one Subconscious CD for every 11,700 Dream Theater fans. Not a bad ratio eh!! Every copy is numbered and initialed in gold to make it very hard to counterfeit.

Note: the Japan order is in the mail from Kaoru to me and I am waiting for it. I will send out ALL of the Nihon-jin-Ytsejammer CDs at the same time. :)

If I messed up, TELL ME! I've proven to be far from perfect with these orders...

Also, I just bought a new desk to keep all this stuff in order with, so a few envelopes might have slipped in between the cracks. If you sent your order a decent long time ago and it hasn't shown up, tell me. I'll either be able to solve the puzzle or I'll join you in befuddlement. :)

    2. What the hell IS Subconscious, and how can I get it?!?

Subconscious is a CD, a project I undertook simply because I thought maybe it should be done. It's totally privately financed, and I think with the number of reservations that have been made, I will come out of it with my head above water, for which I owe the trustworthy members of Ytsejam a bow of gratitude. :)

As pertains to legality... I admit I'm skating the line here. I hope (and so far) DT will be overlooking it. I'm only making enough to cover cost and pay myself roughly minimum wage. Since certain "permanent" costs (hard drive, etc) were covered the first time around, any other CDs I offer will be slightly less expensive. Basically, I'm not making a killing doing this, and it's taking an awful lot of time to get done, so I hope any of you who don't think too highly of me, will find it in your hearts to give me the benefit of the doubt this time. Friends? :) . I sincerely thank all of you Jammers who have had nothing but kind words for my efforts. And yes, the members of Dream Theater are all going to receive complimentary copies. Let nobody say I'm a tightwad. :)

What happened was, I felt it was time to release some of Dream Theater's rarer songs on CD, and thus I sought good copies from everywhere, including some that came from sources connected directly to the band! Thus, I think I can safely say that these are the best copies you can find outside of those in Portnoy's vault at home. (God, I'd love to peruse HIS tape collection... we might find DT covering "Blazing Saddles" or something)

I bought a CD burner and rented equipment from a CD pressing plant nearby, so I could produce the discs. They will have printing on them and a liner cover. I had to order blanks and jewelcases in lots of 500 or more, though, and thus the risk was made: I emptied my bank account and placed the order. Fortunately, it seems I will make up the difference with CD sales.

The blanks made it and I'm underway filling the orders. The price is $25.00 US per disc. It was originally going to be $27.50, but the CD place had a good price on blanks. Its true, as one Jammer pointed out, that I could have kept the higher price and said nothing about the blanks being cheaper than before... and nobody would have known. I did it in hopes of furthering the fans-for-fans attitude that has (thankfully) already spread throughout the net, and to make sure this project is seen as distinct from those of the high-and-mighty quality-none big boot CD pressers.

The CD pressing plant I got all my materials from previewed my current master, and decided it just wouldn't do. So, the disc has been totally redone in Dolby Digital Surround Sound, compatible with any CD player but MUCH MUCH better than before, and compatible with Pro-Logic systems for full instrument separation on most tracks. The remastering involved a thorough noise cleanup and proper re-phasing of the instruments for center/left/right/surround.

Things have, thankfully, been cleaned up as best they could be in the process, and I guess based on the early commentary on the CD by people on the Jam who have already received theirs, it seems that the quality is satisfying to the Dream Theater Fanatic. :)

    Here's the still-final tracklist:

    1. Eve (live w/samples) (instrumental) 2. A Change of Season (live, JL on vocals) 3. O Holy Night (CD on vocals) 4. Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight (CD on vocals) 5. Don't Look Past Me (Jon Hendricks on vocals) 6. Wanted Dead or Alive (Rich Kern on the so-called vocals) 7. To Live Forever (acoustic version) (JL on vocals) 8. The Gorilla Session (Petrucci) 9. Mission: Impossible (Instrumental) 10. The Back Pain Jam (RPM Warehouse) (Instrumental) 11. Awake Heavy Jam (Instrumental) 12. Experimental (Petrucci) 13. Tears (JL on vocals) 14. Winter (JL on vocals)

In some cases, the rawness of the original recording will be evident, but at least you know you're hearing it the best way it can possibly be reproduced. Subconscious is _the_ DT event of early 1995! :) Or at least, it will be until DT's EP comes out... and I'll gladly yield the title if it does. I love their music.

Here's how to order: (or how to pay for your reserved discs)

    1. Please use a money order. It's simply the best way, and they cost twenty to forty cents. Make it out to me for $25.00 per disc that you want (limit 5 to a person) and I am paying the shipping cost. Each CD will be mailed in a padded mailer so it won't get damaged. Please make out the money order to me, Michael Bahr, not to Feel The Rush or anything like that, since this is really just my own personal endeavor.

I accepted checks for the Rush Video Montage, but a few bounced, and I was left holding the bag. I've put too much money into this, and can't afford to be stuck with bad checks, even though I trust 99% of you Ytsejam members. Plus, best of all, a money order can be traced by you, traced by me, and you know for a _fact_ that you will either get a CD, a refund, or I will get thrown in the slammer! :)

    2. International customers, I know international money orders are expensive. If there is another way you wish to pay (wire, transfer, or other) let me know and if I can do it, we'll do it. So far just sending cash has been 100% successful, so I guess there's no real harm in it. If you choose to send cash, send it in a thick envelope so it is less risky. For orders of more than one disc, it is economical and safe to use a traveler's cheque.

    3. Please allow 2-3 weeks for delivery. By now, you know why. :)

    4. I finagled myself a bigger mailbox at my apartment complex, so in order to keep the orders moving fast, send it to me at the new address. It is:

Michael Bahr 3175 N. Price Rd. #1066 Chandler, AZ 85224

That's my real address, not a PO Box... so don't worry, I'm not planning on fleeing the country any time soon.

If you happen to live in the Phoenix area feel free to call me at 602-777-0501. Besides all the CD stuff, I'm always up for lunch 'n' trading with local Jammers. I can't guarantee I'll be home very often to answer (always out buying supplies, or at work, or camping at the post office... grin) but if I'm there, we'll chat.

Actually, a few of you have called me long distance on this line from wherever you live. It's a real treat to talk with you, but just be careful of your phone bill, I do not want to cost anybody a lot of money. If you do call, try between 11am and 9pm Pacific time, since that gives you the best chance to catch me at home. I look forward to talking with any of you who care to call. I hope you don't mind my bastardized Arizona-Canadian-Southwestern-Pacific-New Yorker accent. (the product of mixed accents being prominent in my upbringing...) So far people get a real kick out of it. :)

    5. Send in your order: . Your NAME . The ADDRESS for me to SEND your CD(s) to . The NUMBER of CDs you're asking for . The money order, made out for $25, $50, $75, whatever . your EMAIL address, in case I need to contact you (emerg.)

    . (OPTIONAL) your home phone.

I won't require home phone because I want you to all feel safe that I am not selling mailing lists. :) If you _do_ include it, I will use it in case of emergency (maybe the mailman spills coffee on your order and I can't read your address or something).

    3. Original press masters...

The gold disc is sold. The glass master, I didn't get to keep. That was sort of a sore point for me, since I paid for it, but the plant says they just re-use them anyway. Ah well.

    4. Epilogue

I am at garion@indirect.com and will remain there until the end of time, so please mail me if you are confused, need information, are angry, sad, lonely, maybe even a little whimsical, and need to get in touch with me. Thank you ALL for showing such solidarity that a 21-year-old college student emptied his bank account to order tons of plastic! :) You are truly, one and all, ladies and gentlemen, the best fans Dream Theater could hope for.
