Ok, since everybody's talking about the ending I thoguht I might talk
about the lyrical part. What is James singing there? I can't understand
it live or on record. It sounds like it changes so he's not repeating it
I guess..well bye

maybe since eastwest got bought by elektra, and is no longer owned by
atlantic, then c-man has nothing to do with the EW bands anymore. his
c-notes promotions or whatever might also have just had a short term
promotion contract with atlantic, who knows.

i would like to hear from him again, he did us a wonderful service with
the boxes of stuff and the backstage passes.

last ytsejam, dr mosh accused me of being "rabid" and going off the deep
end. :) i just wanna say that i just *reallY* want to make sure that these
dt/echolyn shows get taped. especially if dt busts out with ACOS or
something.

last night was the qr show at the Gorge in washington
it was a fine show

but first
a word about the opening act

I admit that I was a bit wary about typo negative (heh)
because of what I've heard about them here and in other places
but I have to say that they were pretty cool
they played about five songs I think
for a forty-five minute set
and two of those songs were covers
though which ones they were, I'm not going to tell you
(yes I do remember, and yes
I knew them both as originals)(the lead singer's comment about
under-twenty-fivers notwithstanding)

more about the lead singer:
I found him to be cleverly amusing and self-depreciative
and loved his *outrageous* accent
his voice was decent when he wasn't death-rattling
and I'm sorry I don't know his name

though I think I liked what I heard of them
I don't think I'm quite going to rush out and
buy their stuff
but they sure were interesting

as for *the* show itself
easily the best visuals I've seen at a show
qr had a *lot* of stuff going on at times
unfortunately the sound was not great
as this venue is a rather large outdoor ampitheatre
and where I was
was about three hundred yards from the stage
(which is the farthest away
I've ever been for *any* show)

even thouth I'm not the hugest qr fan
(I only have promised land)
(though that will change after last night)
I still had a blast

incidentally
I thought geoff did a very good job
and his voice was not noticeably poor
except for the beginning to silent lucidity
and I enjoyed watching him act(!)
is it just me
or was he drunk
or does he just stagger around a lot?!
also I was not previously aware that he played the sax

the guitars were tight and crunchy
(just the way I like it!)
and the rhythm section could be *felt*
even back were I was
I feel sorry for the poor souls with reserved seating
(they were not only pounded with sound
but also with water balloons from some joker in GA)

all in all quite impressive
and the worst part about the whole experience
worse even than the four-hour drive back
including a futile attempt to find a denny's
at every city we went through
the worst part was the pre-show music

I just have to say that dt excels in that department

If you don't wanna read it, I'm giving you space to skip it... :)

In Ytsejam #834, Brian provided a pretty good Q'ryche setlist from memory...

What about "Disconnected"? I think that was right after "Promised Land."
Anybody else able to verify?? The reason I think this fits in there
somewhere is because it has all those sirens and other sounds at the
beginning - and in the video footage, this train comes bearing down on Nikki
right then (there's train whistle here). I *think* this was right after the
bar scene ("Promised Land") 'cause Nikki is sort of blitzed or dazed or
something...

DT content: Right now, I think Dream Theater and Queensryche are tied for
favorite band, for me. :)

I only caught the last half of the live QR broadcast. Is there anyone out there who taped it that would like to trade with me? I have some soundboard boots from Rush, DT, Yes, and the Police. Please respond via e-mail. I need this tape! I've seen QR on the O:M and Empire tours and i'm going to two Promised Land shows (Orlando - 2nd row, and Tampa). Can't wait!

I've been meaning to bring this up. Someone in the last digest hit it right on the nose about the Beatles song that ends all of a sudden. Somewhere I heard or read that Mike got the idea to end PMU that way from that same Beatles song. Mystery solved...

I'm sooooo tired right now I can barely type

> last night was the qr show at the Gorge in washington > it was a fine show

it was one of the finest shows i've ever seen (although i still think that the dt show was a bit better :) )...well as far as the "show", i'd say that the QR one was better...but as far as "concert" dt was better. QR did really put on a "show"...geoff is an incredible singer, and a terrific actor. the visual aspect of it was outstanding. > > though I think I liked what I heard of them > I don't think I'm quite going to rush out and > buy their stuff > but they sure were interesting

well i missed them....i arrived for the actual show 20 minutes late... yes i missed the first 4 songs of QR's set. > > as this venue is a rather large outdoor ampitheatre > and where I was > was about three hundred yards from the stage > (which is the farthest away > I've ever been for *any* show)

being late for the show was actually the best thing that could have happened, as i still didn't have tickets, and i managed to get a 3rd row center seat for $30!

> is it just me > or was he drunk > or does he just stagger around a lot?!

if you're refering to the part in promissed land, then it was intentional :) i think promissed land, and the bar scene they created was the highlight of the show for me...very cool!

> I feel sorry for the poor souls with reserved seating > (they were not only pounded with sound > but also with water balloons from some joker in GA)

nope...we weren't pounded...in fact my ears weren't even ringing...it was great sound

> all in all quite impressive > and the worst part about the whole experience > worse even than the four-hour drive back

hmm...i can top that...mine was a 6 hour drive back (to vancouver, b.c.) in fact i didn't even know that gorge was that far away from seattle... i thought it was just outside of seattle...explains why we were so late!

for my DT content, i didn't see any ytsejammers...but i did meet one DT fan...well it was when i was squeezing through, trying to get to my seat...it was really hard, as the people wouldn't let me get past them. anyways one guy grabbed me by my jean jacket, and i thought he was gonna punch my face in (he was a big guy :) )....he looke at my DT patch (the flaming heart)...he stared at it for 10 seconds or so, then looked at me, smiled, and shook my hand.....it was weird :) i wore my ytsejam t-shirt also, but didn't get any comments or anything like others did.

sorry for the long post :)

Tim

ps...does anyone know what the attendance was? i know gorge seats about 18000, and from where i was, it looked pretty full! my guess about 15000...but i could be wrong...it was a great crowd!

The latest word on C-Man: he is alive and well and still doing promos for WEA... I talked to him just this week, and we'll probably see him a lot more once the U.S. tour begins to kick in around the August time... (hopefully)

Yes, my man Brian is rabid, but of course that is a good thing, cause he'll have all the masters and copies that I'll ever need or anyone will ever need, we'll just call him the media archivist... :) Time to get another DAT machine dude! (me too...)

They had a nice song on HBB.

Did you see this on HBB in Israel? If so, wow!

> Are they really your freinds?

Yea, as best we could be considering they're based in Arkansas and we're in Atlanta, GA, USA (that's, mmm, about 1000 km distance). We met them after a show and found them to be refreshingly cool (and incredibly young; bassist Jeff Morgan was a tender 15 when they recorded their album, 16 when we met them). We stay in touch with them and with their management. Send me email if you'd like more info on 'em, or you can try http://www.crl.com/~vanyel/mdo/mdo.html (let me know if it doesn't work). Nothing fancy, and I need to update the text a bit. :)

They're no DT by any stretch, but they've got potential if they can ride out their current hiatus. They are MUCH bigger in Europe than here; for example, in Paris they were almost mobbed at a record-store signing.

> About Type O Negative - I think Peter Steele is incredibly talented, if > somewhat disturbed in a beautiful way.

I've met him. He's an odd one, but unfailingly cordial and self-effacing in front of fans. At least one of the net.rumours about him are true.

> Their songs are really weird and > boring at first, but as you get to know them a little better, it's great > stuff. Really sad, in a way.

I like Type O because they really don't sound like too many other bands out there. They span the range from slow near-ballads with background choirs to raging thrash, and IMHO they're quite talented.

>I have their EP, "The Origin of the Feces", > and it's good. Includes some old live stuff, with incredible covers for > "Hey Joe" by Hendrix (they made it "Hey Peter"...), and "Paranoid".

I think this is a "faked" live album, e.g., these are studio or demo tracks with augmented audience sounds in the background. This has been discussed on Usenet.

Greetings again, I thought I would add my $0.02 to the Geoff Tate voice thing. I saw Queensryche in Denver on the 9th (has it already been 3 weeks?!) and they were incredible. They remain the best show I've ever seen in my life (four times over) and they get better every tour. But on to the real subject. When they hit Denver GT's voice was as close to note perfect as I have ever heard a voice sound live. He was phenomenal. I would suspect that touring can get to a singer after a while. As a guitar player I am going to make a guess here, but a singer can't replace his voice ever few plays when it doesn't sound bright anymore. The broadcast show may have just come after too many ciggarettes too. GT is a great vocalist, but he's lacking a little common sense there (not a slam against smokers in general, but we all know what smoking can do to your voice in the long run). I'm a real wimp when it comes to my fingers, I would never do anything that would keep me from being able to play the best I can. Oh well, that's enough from me. EVE- This is a great version of the song, but not really anything special since I've already got the "Dance of Eternity" set. It is nice to not have to hear that lousy beginning to Pull Me Under right at the end, however!

CHANGE OF SEASONS- Same story, second verse as far as this not being new for me. I love the song, however, and I'm very anxious to hear a studio version (perhaps with the samples that are on the Chris Cintron version!) on the EP later this year. I do appreciate that Mike toned down the _overdone_ bass from the DoE boot.

O HOLY NIGHT-

I'm not much of a fan of Charlie, but I _love_ this song. I've never quite heard a hymn done this way before, but I really like it. Petrucci's great string work and Portnoy's skins are very good, and don't ruin the feeling of the song. I sure can't wait to hear this one with LaBrie on the EP (at least I _hope_ the fan club bio is correct in predicting this release!!) But what's with that intro?!

CARRY THAT WEIGHT- Again, not being a fan of Dominici, I think he sounds fine here. I really like the guys' treatment of the Beatles here. Respectful to the song, yet still definitely Dream Theater! Great conservative drum solo, there, Mike!

DON'T LOOK PAST ME- This is one of my favorites on the album. It's too bad that it's only a demo, so the original recording wasn't probably that fantastic to begin with. I'd really like to hear it well recorded with James at the Helm. The song itself is a lot like a WDADU track. The samples are cool, and Kevin's keys sometimes remind me of Status Seeker. I really like the time changes, as well. Sorry, but Hendricks has got to go.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE- I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. This is a song that DESERVED to be heard! I know that's Rich doing the chimpumk imitation in the background, but is that Kevin on leads? This will entertain me for quite a long time

TO LIVE FOREVER- This is a fantastic treatment of this already great tune. I really love the piano, and is that Myung playing the second "rhythm" guitar part? Too bad it's sped up a bit, though.....

THE GORILLA SESSION- Music by _THE_ man! Kind of pointless, but still good.

MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE THEME- This is great! I already have the version from the Lost in the Sky boot, but it's nice to hear studio outtakes like this. So, Mike, how DID Z-rock get a copy of this to use on the air?? :>

BACK PAIN JAM- Recording leaves a bit to be desired, as does the guy talking (!), but the music is impeccable! No wonder these guys can always come up with great studio tracks! I'd be perfectly happy to watch them jam all day like this!

AWAKE HEAVY JAM- I like this better than the Back Pain Jam. I like the John/Derek interplay on this song.

EXPERIMENTAL- Mying? Give that man a guitar! Yes, a little pointless agan and without much structure, but I like acoustic stuff. I hope a version of this appears later, either on an album or live.

TEARS- As a hard-core Rush fan, this is a dream (no pun) come true. Before I heard this, I had no idea how James was going to pull this off, but I'm impressed. (now I'm anxious to hear how he handled Marillion's Easter) I hope this appears as a B-side, either on the Silent Man single or the ACOS EP. These covers deserve to be heard as well...

WINTER- I'm not a Tori fan, but after this (as well as Kevin's _Song For Tori_), I think I'm poised to become one! James handles this one well, and I think he does it justice without sounding like Tiny Tim and being Mr. Falsetto.

MYSTERY- Okay, so it's a software thing. Does everyone know this but me? Clue me in?

Hey folks - I'm just a WEE bit behind, but that happens when you spend a week running around the ENTIRE Disneyworld park for a week and forget to unsubscribe from the list while you're gone. <GGG> A couple things:

AirDance: I'm BAAAACK, you can send those bizillion replies now! Did you get the... ahem... _box_ I sent from Orlando a couple days ago? <evil wink> Make sure you tell Kevin it was YOUR goofy idea, not mine! hehehehehe...

Babs: >...stop picking on my western New York/Canadian twang<

Hee - try having the same twang combined with a southern drawl!

Steve Zebrowski: >he just looked like he not only would rather be _somewhere_ else, but _anywhere_ else than up on stage playing DT's music.<

Give him a round of applause, ladies and gentlemen, he has seen the light!

>I'm glad Kevin Moore is gone<

I'm not going to make a run for the flamethrower simply because I'd be wasting my time. I don't think there's anything AirDance or any of the other DT fans who are still loyal to Kev besides myself can say to make the latent hostiles relent in their attacks on him - forget trying to make them understand that he did what he thought best and he's the happier for it. If you hate Kevin and refuse to open your ears to a different brand of music that, while it may not be Dream Theater, is still undeniably KEVIN, then that's your loss. End of flame.

End of post, too!
