I remember an interview with Mike Portnoy in Europe, with DT warming up in
the background, and I think Kevin was playing a Tori Amos song, but I can't

Can anyone tell me what song Kev was playing? And didn't they cover a Tori
Amos song when they plays that cover show in NY a while ago?<<<
Kev was playing along w/"Song For Eric" while Mike was doing the interview
(if it's the same interview I'm thinking of). DT did a verse or two of
"Winter" at the Ronnie Scott's cover gig earlier this year & I _think_ that's
the only time they've covered a Tori song, but someone please correct me if
I'm wrong. :)
A lot of people have asked me via e-mail about the origins of Kev's version
of "Song For Eric," some going so far as to ask me how Kevin enjoyed
_working_ w/Tori on the track(!!), so I should probably elaborate on this a
little bit. :) I had a feeling I'd have to answer this on the list sooner or
later, so I'm including some additional information for questions that may
come up afterwards as well. This is going to take up some space, so please
delete now & avoid the rush if you don't enjoy rambling reminiscences of DT
days past. :) Read at your own risk.
That aforementioned interview w/Mike P is sort of the reason Kev's version of
"Song For Eric" exists. I believe that interview was actually posted here on
YJ a long time ago, during the _I&W_ tour. I wasn't subscribed to YJ at
that time, but a friend of mine was & was nice enough to forward the
interview to me. (My references to this interview are entirely from memory,
so please excuse any minor discrepancies. :) I was taken aback when I read
that Tori was being playing over the PA system while Mike was doing the
interview, not only because I was a huge fan of hers & only knew of maybe two
or three other DT fans who were also Tori fans at that time (you all know who
you are :), but also because I already knew Mike, yet had no idea that anyone
in the band had even listened to Tori's music at all. I was even moore <G>
shocked when Mike joked in the interview that she was Kevin's "idol" & that
he was playing keyboard accompaniment along to her singing "Song For Eric" at
the soundcheck. I'd never even really talked to Kev at that time, but I knew
that if he was a big Torifan, I would have to make a point of doing so in the
future. :) Since I already knew Mike somewhat, as soon as I was able to get
in touch w/him again, I told him that I would love to talk to Kevin about our
mutual appreciation of the "red-haired goddess" & he said that he'd make sure
that we were introduced properly the next time they played LA. :) Obviously,
as you all know by now, we _were_ finally introduced &, not surprisingly,
initially became friends mostly because of our mutual love of Tori's music.
Anyway, I told Kev at that time that I knew about him playing along w/"Song
For Eric" at the soundcheck over in Europe & asked if he had somehow managed
to record it because I would have _died_ to have heard it. ;) Unfortunately,
no, he didn't record it, and to make matters worse, he said that his Tori CD
single that contained that track, along w/most of the rest of his CDs, were
stolen at an airport at customs when they were coming back to the US. :(
(For those of you who are not rabid Tori collectors, "Song For Eric" was on
a limited edition CD single that was already out-of-print by that time. It
is available on several Tori bootleg CDs now, however.) He then asked me if
I would be so kind as to tape that Tori CD single, along w/some other
hard-to-find Tori audio, onto a DAT for him so that he could at least have a
copy of the song. I said, "sure," of course, and added, "I'd really love to
hear you play along w/it one day, that would be like a dream come true," not
knowing what my innocent request would ultimately turn into. ;) So I made
Kev a tape & sent it to him shortly thereafter. Although I asked for
absolutely nothing in return, he was kind enough to send me an original copy
of the _Majesty_ demo, an Afterlife promo CD single & a DT Japanese tour
t-shirt to say thanks for the tape. :) Whatta guy. :) As if THAT wasn't
enough...
..I didn't hear from Kev again for about three months, then I got a call
from him late one night, which really surprised me because I had never given
him my phone number! (He called directory assistance, thank God I was
listed. :) The first thing he said was, "I just wanted to ask you if you'd
like to hear MY version of 'Song For Eric'?" Like he even had to ASK?? ;)
He said that he recorded it for me to say thanks for helping him out by
giving him a copy of the song, and also as his own little tribute to Tori. :)
He said he was also going to put a couple of his own, personal demos on the
tape, even though he thought they "sucked." ;) (As those of you who have the
demos know by now, that tape that he sent had the "Space-Dye Vest" &
"Blanket" demos on it too.)
Sorry this is getting so long, but hopefully, it will answer everyone's
questions at one time.
The next most commonly-asked question is, "has Tori heard Kev's version of
'Song For Eric'?" Happily, the answer is YES & she loves it. :) I'm also
proud to say that I'm the lucky person who was able to get a copy of the song
into Tori's hands. :> Kev knew that I had managed to meet Tori a couple of
times before in the past & he asked me if I would "head the campaign" to get
a copy of his "version" to her if I ever met her again. Once again, I said,
"sure," of course, and I did manage to do so during her last tour, enclosing
w/the tape of the song a letter explaining to her who Kev was, what was on
the tape, etc. I didn't think I'd ever find out what she thought of it until
she was scheduled to be a special guest on-line at Prodigy. At least a
hundred people must have asked her questions and I knew she would only be
answering a few, so I didn't think I would get a response from her. Luckily,
I _did_ and she said she "loved it." :)
A lot of people have also asked me if there's any chance that Tori & Kev may
actually work together at some point in the future. I wouldn't hold my
breath, but anything's possible. :) She knows how to get in touch w/him if
she's interested & I'm sure if she does, I'll be the first one Kev calls to
brag to about it. ;)
Ok, that's it! Hope you learned something! ;) It's strange to think that
Mike's innocent comment about Tori during an interview led to all this, huh?

There is an EXCELLENT band called Braindance playing in NYC the night of the YtseCon. When I saw them open for Hawkwind last month, I immiediately thought they're like a more gothic version of DT (though the lead singer seems a bit "up himself" if you know what I mean). I truly can't imagine any DT fan not liking them at least somewhat. Even me coming from the prog-rock area rather than metal. Anyway, they come on at 11pm at a club in Manhattan (I have the info at home). I'm toying around with the possibility of going. If anyone's interested in going, we can talk about it Saturday at the con. No need to really make any definite plans now; just thought I'ld throw it out as a suggestion. See ya in 4 days!

I won't do a long review since so many of you already have, just some words:
Many of the recordings were in fact familiar to me, but it was great to have the sound improved like this. Then there were others that I'm very glad that I now have heard!
THE BACK PAIN JAM this is so cool, I've never heard them doing a REAL jam, just their so-called improv sections which are not THAT jammed. This, however sounds to me as totally free-form. Ok, they stick to a simple chord-pattern but the do it oh so well. Pity that the original recording wasn't that HiFi, but what the heck!
HEAVY JAM also very cool, starts off the usual way with Myung doing harmonics, well I don't mind that. I wouldn't mind seeing a whole show with John M just doing his harmonics-stuff ;-)
TEARS wow!!! one of my favourite Rush-tracks, and a good version too.
And while on this subject: Could someone please post the complete COVER-GIG setlist. I know they did medley-type-stuff so please also post what they included. This could be in the FAQ!
MYSTERY TRACK Now that the competition is over, could someone please tell me what it is, it relates to computers I guess, but what about DT?!?
Other faves: Gorilla Session (glad he kept the speed down!) and of course Golden Slumbers, Wow, that number would fit perfectly well into their usual set. Maybe as an encore, yeah the last one, ending with the last part The End. Guys if you're reading this, feel free to do this one if you're doing a cover!
Sorry, I don't really think we should try to influence them on what to do, even if they don't care it feels like a strange thing to me to even try. The artist should keep away from doing strictly what the audience wants. We should instead appreciate them for what they do. And if we don't, screw us! ;-)

Oh yeah, there was a 10 minute report/interview with DT (Mike and James) on Swedish TV5 this Saturday. Great to see that a small (relatively) channel like that, that seldom do music-reports, do a report on DT. Not much new stuff to us, but still interesting.

Second, Jason Hartman wrote that the DT shows in NY and NJ were sold out. The NJ show is not. YES! If you order from Birchhill Night Club directly, you have to go and pick them up. Otherwise you can order from your local Ticketmaster... my local Ticketmaster doesn't show a listing for them so I called the one in North Jersey (201-507-8900). The show starts at 8:30.

I can't believe it took me so long to get it. I haven't listened to much else. I guess it's because it came out during my anti-rock-music phase and I was afraid it wouldn't be good. Jeez, was I mistaken. The whole album is so fucking awesome.
In other news, are there any drummers on the list? And do you think that Portnoy is just fucking amazing!! I'm a bass player and I can't play one beat on drums but I've been paying a lot of attention to Portnoy lately and he is blowing my mind! I hope he influences a lot of drummers because he is incredible.

Really? That's funny, since disco was created and destroyed in approximately ten years while rap, on the other hand, is more popular than ever after over fifteen since its birth.

Nice...very nice. I suppose you are much more intelligent than rap's listeners and could write much better envisioning poetry than the likes of KRS-1. I'm sure. I have encountered many people who say that progressive died ten years ago. It all depends on who you talk to and who is more IGNORANT than the next. This is not a flame.

The more I listen to the instrumental sections on Dream Theater's albums, (especially "A Change of Seasons") I hear so many similarities to one of the greatest bands of the mid-eighties... Helloween. You can call me a poseur all you want, the guitar solos in ACoS resemble the cord progressions in "Keeper of the Seven Keys" and "Halloween". If you've never heard Helloween I strongly suggest you give them a try. Each band member has a strong knowledge of his instrument and, if by some strange occurance, James LaBrie ever left Dream Theater I think the only singer qualified to take his place would Micheal Kiske of Helloween.
