    Hey,

I've gotten an overwhelming response from Florida area Ytsejammers. I
think we can all consolidate our efforts at getting up to see the show on
the 29th. There is talk of a Ytse-Caravan from Florida. From the looks
of it, there are about ten people from the Sunshine State attending the
Dec 29th show in Old Bridge, NJ. All the Florida Jammers can get their
own little section and a huge sign that says "Florida" - kind of like the
    Democratic or Republican National Conventions.

1.> Name Tags - It would be nice to be able to easily identify each and
every Ytsejammer. Some Ytsejammers probably don't plan on buying
t-shirts, so a name-tag could identify them as a jammer, while some
people like BABS just plain refuse to wear theirs. :)

2.> Was there talk of getting together before/after the Birch Hill show?
Let me know if I missed it and fill me in.

3.> We might all want to get a coordinated effort together to print out jams
for Mike Portnoy. Someone can be elected to print out jams 1100-1105,
someone else can do 1106-1110, etc etc. That will eliminate duplication
and Mike will have tons of jams to read. If enough people are interested
in doing this, I'll work out the details and volunteer to print out some.
If this project does get implemented, PLEASE try to conduct yourselves
normally as if you all didn't know that your words will be seen by
Portnoy. (though no one will complain if the posts got genuinely more
intelligent because Portnoy will see it.)

It would really suck if we started getting 6 or 7 jams a day again, but
this time around, 6 or 7 jams full of one-liner "Hi Mike!"'s and the
resulting complaints. I trust each and every one of you to use your
discretion. If a Jammer pounds out a brilliant post and includes a _very
short_ hello to Mike, that should be okay. I don't want to be the one
responsible for an avalanche of jams and unsubscribes. Even Bafu Vai
has a life, and cannot spend time wading through 6million "Hi Mike!"'s.
I wonder how he maintains his formidable piano and guitar chops
(perfectly executed/articulated 16th note runs at 190bpm!) AND finds
time to write up the crazy shit he's known for. (not to mention
    schoolwork)

Greetings, everyone!! I have a HUGE favor to ask of some kind-hearted
Philadelphian on the list. I just got myself a ticket to the 12/29 Birch
Hill show, and I find myself with no way to get there, so I really really
need someone to take pity on me and give me a lift. I live right outside
Philly (Lansdowne, PA, in case anyone' ever heard of it), so if you're
going to this show, I could make arrangements to meet you about anywhere
in the Philly metropolitan area. I will be eternally grateful to anyone
who can help me out here......this will be my FIRST time to see DT, so I
don't want this ticket to go to waste for lack of transportation.....

    Thanks in advance,

    hey folx,
first off, thanks to MIKE BAHR! for Acoustic Dreams. this disc roolZ! the
sound quality beats every boot i've ever heard -ok, so i only have SubCon
and the InstruMentals :) i agree w/ whomever said AD tops WDaDU
production-wise. the cover is really kool. kudos to "George Fan". and onto
    the songs:

~ AD ~ still not sure if i like how James sings here. very
~ LS ~ wow. the John's smoke this one. i like it.
~ WfS ~ kool. again, the John's shine brightly. i almost like it better than
    the IaW version.
~ SM ~ eh, similar to Awake so my feelings are similar. givin' the correct
    mood it's kool.
~ LIE ~ oh yeah! this kicks. i think i'll learn this on bass. Mike, put that
tamborine down. ahhh...thank you. ok, bongos...kool...damnit, there's that
    tamborine again. oh well ;)
~ Tears ~ i definately know i like James better than Geddy.
~ OHN ~ is it Christmas yet?
~ PS ~ did someone learn how to work the stereo pan? :) Bruce gives it that
nice British feel. i still hear the basic feel of Ytse Jam in there. you
know the part, dunn dundundun dun-dun-dun dun-dun-dun dunn
    dundundun-dundundun.....
~ 6 ~ kinda raw compared to Awake version. keys solo different? "inside
coming outside" part extended 1 time.
~ CiaW ~ let's bury James in reverb and push him back into the mix ;) i miss
the vibraslap (right after the guitar solo) in the Awake version hehe
~ Voices and Bad ~ someone tell that damned audience to StFU!!!! i'm tryin
    to listen!!

welp, once again, Mike puts out a truely great cd. good job! and consider
this my formal request for 2 WDaTU.

like my .sig for the bandwidth-impaired? ;)

The following is some email I exchanged with
    Bill Berends of MASTERMIND today:

    >Also, are you going to be playing anywhere in
    >New York from the Dec. 27- Jan. 3? A friend and
    >I are flying in to see a friend. Incidentally,
    >we're taking him to the DT concert at the Malibu
    >on Long Island on the 27th.

Well, the good news is we *might* be opening one (or more) of the Dream
Theater shows in December, the bad news is, I don't know yet! I've been
talking with their (ex) manager Jim Pitulski, and he said he'd have ask
Mike Portnoy if it was cool - if it goes over with Mike, then we're on. I
expect ot hear back from him about it soon. Hopefully it'll work out, I'll
let know know ASAP. You're coming out from CA for a visit? Enjoy!

    <<and, later>>

    >I can't imagine why he *wouldn't* want
    >you guys to open for them.

Me neither, but I haven't been able to get in touch with Jim Pitulski the
last few days, so hopefully I'll know more by next week. He says Mike is
really cool though and doesn't see a problem - but you never know!

    >Do you mind if I forward this "rumor"
    >to the ytsejam list? I would make a
    >lot of people very happy !>)>

Sure, go ahead, it might help get them moving on it if they thought there
was an interest! Another show in the works - Electric Factory Concerts of
Phila. has promised us the opening slot for Jethro Tull when they come to
town. I believe we can count on them as they did get us the gig with John
    Wetton as promised.

Wish us luck and thanks again for your interest! Hopefully we'll meet up in
    December.

    Bill

Has anyone heard of this band the Tea Party? I've ehard them on the
radio here & there. They sound real interesting, but I don't know if I
want to buy the CD after only hearing 1 song. Zep riffs ala _Presence_,
but angrier, with a cool synth sound doubling the bass and guitar, and
kind of an Eddie-Vedder-meets-Mike-Patton type singer. Any recommendations?

            Hello folks.

While I thank those of you who are providing the wonderful public
service of posting directions to the december shows... you might as well
just wait and post them in late december, since everyone will be asking
again anyway. :) No harm done, just noticed this...

Am I Mike Portnoy? Don't I wish!! It'd be pretty damn cool, but I
have to level with you all, I'm definitely not The Man. (of course, all
the conspiracy theorists amongst thee will no doubt take that as
definitive proof that I'm the hirsute drummer we all admire.)

The Light Fuse I'm using, for general knowledge, is from Deer
Park from January 1993. The only other public performance of it was in
Pennsylvania, that had James singing. This is for WDATU.

The "Lie" groove works well as the base for instrumental
improvisation. Not only on Acoustic Dreams, but in my own band as well.

I don't know if my rhetorical whimsies so far in this post have
made it clear, but I am totally blasted... completely drunk off my ass.
And enjoying every minute of it. I've had eight... count'em, eight of
those big-ass cans of Fosters' Lager. This is so cool, I'm trippin. It's
been a while since I had nothing important to attend to the morning
after a potential drunkenness. You know, if you get drunk enough, listen
to Tori Amos, and sort of dance slowly with the flow of the melody, it's
really neat, and your knees and elbows feel pretty numb.

    > gulp <

So did you all hear about the constipated mathematician? He
worked it out with a pencil. OK, nasty one, I know.

I'm listening to the Back Pain Jam from Subconscious as I kick
back here... boy, I dig this. Derek and John really shine.

I just saw a few baiting posts for a potential religious argument
on the Jam. Please don't bite, folks. Religion is one issue upon which we
can be sure we will *never* agree.

I believe in God and in Jesus Christ, but there are many who seek
a different path. I would hope that their path will lead them into the
ultimate reality as surely as I hope mine does for me.

    God bless,

    Hi,
I'm not German but I'll translate this. I speak Dutch, English, French and
    German.

    Original text:
Hi, I found following article on Germany Rock Hard magazine(September
issue). Would any Germany Ytsejammer like to translate this?
    -----

    Translation:
After his self inflicted exile in New Mexico, where he moved to after he quit
the prog kings Dream Theater, keyboard magician Kevin Moore returned to the
'civilazation'. He pitched his tents in the New York area on the West Coast
(should be East Coast I think...), where he works together with Fates Warning
drummer Mark Zonder on songmaterial for his new-age sounding solo project.
Some companies, among them prog-rock label Magna Carta, are showing interest,
but Moore isn't considering a deal at this moment because this project is
    just in its initial stage.

Some one wrote about getting into prog/metal, etc without much outside
    influence....

Well I share that characteristic. I didn't have friends who listened to
rock/metal especially Prog at that time (grade 8/9) I come form a
classically trained piano background. At that time, rap was the "in"music
and I listened to it partly cuz it was cool and I did like it (I still do
today to a certain degree) Nyways, I started getting into real metal. I
don't remember what got me to change, but I started to listen to just
heavy and speed metal. (oh ya... I also listened to the MOST SAPPIEST
stuff ever at that time too!! I know almost all of the Chicago songs by
    heart now :) )

After a while, I started picking some "good" music. Saigon Kick, King's
X, Queensryche, Metallica, Van Halen, etc. I kind of want to thank MEAT
magazine for pointing out some good picks. I think from reading a couple
of their reviews, I was persuaded to buy Empire. I think that was about
the extent of any influence I got.

For the most part, I've been exposed to more good music through the
YtseJam. I've got to thank most of the people that are really mature
about their attitudes towards music. Some don't slam other types of music
and they try to get others to try out the stuff they like. I really
    appreciate that.

Most of my friends are not really into my type of music, except for the
pop-rock, but I've found zounds of people at U... and on my floor.

Anywze, this is getting long winded, so I'll just end with

    DT Roooolz!!!!

Hey Ytsejammers....I'm not by any means a drummer nor do I have any
expertise in understanding anything tecnical when it comes to drums. But
I just wanted to share some of my favorite drum parts in Dream Theater
songs. I hardly ever listen to whats going on with the drums (too
focused on the guitar and keys usually), but several times in DT songs
they just jump right out at me. For example, in ACoS, at about 12:00,
Petrucci is playing a pretty simple riff and Portnoy is just playing
along (I'm not a drummer, remember, so bare with me when I try to explain
this) and he just cuts the beat in half while Petrucci just keeps playing
his riff in the same time and according to the same beat. I'm sure this
is not tecnically that difficult for a good drummer, but it has the
effect of making that whole part seem to go in "slow motion." Really
cool! It reminds me of some of Peart's work at the end of Red
Barchetta. I also really like the segue between the second chorus and
the guitar solo of Scarred where the guitar rhythm/time and the drums are
completely different but they eventually catch up with each other so that
they are both playing the same thing. Again I apologize for my horrible
description of these things. I'm a biochemist, not a music theory
major! <grin> I just love when bands can escape the typical 4/4 time
and each of the musicians can break away from the mold, if you will, go
off and do their own thing in the context of the song, and come back and
join the band. It creates such a cool effect and shows the talent of the
musicians. To have such a concept of musical "time" is astounding.

Anyone else ever pick out these parts as their favs?

    Hey all!

DT rules! If anyone has received Acoustic Dreams in the high 200's,
let me know. Still waiting for #305!! (Obligatory DT content).

Now the important business. Have any of you heard of the group
Avant Garde? They were a prog-rock group who played a lot around the NT, CT
area in the mid-late 80's. Two guitarists, bass, drums and singer. Like
Dream Theater, they were all virtuosos. Amazing double leads, odd
time-signatures, etc. They sounded a lot like DT, but their singer sounded
very Yngwieish. Compared to many 80's groups, they were *very* progressive.
Here's the catch. One of their Shrapnel-esque guitarists changed his name
from Pete Rivers to Rivers Cuomo and joined (drumroll please) Weezer...yes,
    Weezer.
I have obatained a *very* rare tape containing their studio demos,
live soundboard recordings and some four-track recordings. It's great if
you ever get into a musical argument with a prog-basher. You can just play
this tape and say, "Look! Even Weezer got their start in prog-rock! Haaa!"
But the playing is very good and interesting because of the Weezer guy.
(You should really hear him on this. It's hard to believe it's the same
    guy).
If anyone is interested in this or has heard of Avant Garde, e-mail
    me personally. Later guys!

It would be even more amazing if Mike DIDN'T cue other guys by clicking his
sticks together. After the drum solo they could all just close their eyes,
take a deep breath, and tune into each others' psychic energy. After a few
seconds of silence.... BAM! they all come in at exactly the same time. :)
