I just got my copy of Petrucci's JPM 100 yesterday, and that is one
awesome guitar! Got it from a place called Eastcoast Music Mall; good
place. They don't have anymore JPM's , but they do have some 7
strings left. Feels weird to see Petrucci's guitar in my living room!
The ACOS TAB project is coming along fine. About half or more of
the song is done, and checking will soon begin. A lot of the solos
and fast runs are being scrutinized now, and I hope most of you will
be suprised by the accuracy. I'm trying to work out all the legalities
of how to get this into other people's hands (posting, FTP, or
sending in a few bucks for a laser copy). There is even a chance that
we will be able to talk to Petrucci himself about it. :)

Last night, in a fit of procrastination, I pulled out Savatage's
"Hanful of Rain." I got it for free over the summer and listened to it a
total of .7 times (that's right, never the whole way through). But this
time was different. It actually sounded good. "Chance" is indcredible,
are most of the other songs. I still don't care for the title track all
that much however. Anyway, I'm considering picking up something else by
them. What would you people suggest. I tend to lean more towards the
commercial side of prog.
I'm really starting to worry about AD. Maybe it got lost in the
mail. This is Vermont, so anything is possible. Oh, the agony.....

Same here. I'd have to say that ACOS comes a close second to
Scarred, IMO. It was the 2nd song that I loved when I was starting
to get into DT. The first was PMU.

If you've seen how bad MTV is over here (which I don't know if you
have), any metal/prog/rock show would at least be better than the
little (or no) time MTV gives. Every time I tune in, there's either
a Rap video, Green Day, or a game show.

Hello once again, kiddies. Okay, first, can someone e-mail me and
explain how to use this IRC thing? I tried it once and it confused the
hell out of me.
Second, a little advice about replying to the Jam using Pine. Here's
what I do: 1) I change the subject. 2) I cut out all the stuff I'm not
replying to. 3) I type my reply. I ALWAYS do it in that order, so that
I don't screw up and accidentally, say, leave half a Jam in my reply. IF
you do this, you shouldn't screw it up and piss us off.

Two quickies...
1. I have a thought/suggestion/whatever for Jason Giles on the
t-shirt design..... I'd like to see the words "Dream Theater" added
to the front of the shirt, possibly over the top of the Majesty logo.
Reason: there have been NUMEROUS occasions when people have seen my
shirt from the back and said "Cool! Dream Theater!," yet they had seen
the front over and over and didn't clue in.
This shouldn't hurt the appearance and we can meet more
like-minded fans this way. :) Thoughts, anyone?
Jason, is this possible?
2. If you get on IRC and there's no-one in #ytsejam, go ahead and
/join #ytsejam anyway, and hang around a bit. If you /set novice off,
you can hang around in any other channels you want (#guitar? #p/g!
for Rush fans? etc.) and when someone shows up, you'll be notified.
Then you simply /join #ytsejam and you're there. I do this routinely
and flip back and forth with ease; aliasing helps. ("/alias jy join
#ytsejam" will let you abbreviate the whole thing with a simple /jy).
Sorry about the IRC tutorial, but I'm constantly amazed by what folks
don't know about IRC.
3. (A bonus) Airfare from here in Atlanta up to any of the NY-area
shows is....rough. No-one seems to fly into JFK from here, and all
the cheaper rates require a Sat. night stay. I REALLY WANT to see at
least one of these shows. We'll see. Kylania, Freeza (#ytsejam
friends), are we still up for a Road Trip? :)

No, you aren't the only one. After graduating from college, I heard a few of Metallica's songs on the radio, and I liked them. At that point, I began making a conscious effort to expose myself to metal. However, I often needed help knowing what was metal, and where to get it. Fortunately, I met a woman who was intensely into metal (and one of those who couldn't stand to like groups after they became popular), and she exposed me to a lot of different stuff. Sanctuary, Megadeath, Saigon Kick, Metallica's other albums to name a few (some of the few that I really liked anyway). We both heard PMU on the radio and both liked it. Question: Has the concert list for each song ever been posted?? I would appreciate any info (JAM#, etc.) if it has. Please Email me directly, as my schedule doesn't always allow me to keep up with every single JAM at present. It probably would be nice to post it on the JAM, if it hasn't been done recently.
Also, I came across the following recently on the Internet:

Appearantly he's a changed man. ... So where and when did he actually get saved? I don't know. It seems to have happened just after he shot the Wayne's World movie. First the junk: If the cookie recepie is the one I think it is (and it probably is) Don't try to make them. You know what happens when you mis baking soda and vinegar? Same thing as when you mix baking soda and lemon juice, which is in the recepie (again, if it's the cookies I'm thiking of)
Now, after warning people not to blow up their kitchens, on to something else.
Because of the talk on the Jam, I went to BLockbuster Music and gave a listen to Shadow Gallery and bought it. I think it's a great album, but I can see why some people don't like it.
My attempt at a rational evaluation of the album:
It is lighter than most DT, primarily because of a higher percentage of keyboards and soft melodic segues between the songs. THey have a more "classical" prog-sense than DT's which is getting more "jazz" based these days. I'd compare Carved in Stone most to WDADU in terms of the sound, but with more keys and more vocal harmonies (they have 4 people who sing)
I think the weakest songs are the first one (bummer, that -- first impressions) because of weak lyrics, but once you get pas tthem the instrumental latter half is excellent, and track 11 "Alaska" which is a fairly standard acoustic travelogue ballad. I think the strongest (short) songs are track 3 - "Crystalline Dream" which is a good Power Ballad, and track 9 "Deeper Than Life", probably the heaviest song on the album (listen to one of these two for a better first impression than "Cliffhanger")
The 20+ minute song "Ghost Ship" is good, but definitely is more fragmented than something like ACOS -- about the same level as IGoD. One of the parts is a several-minute piano solo, which I liked (as a keys player, it makes sense)
And to those who complained about the knocking: If you clock Ghost Ship, you will see that its time only covers tracks 13-19, and track 20 is a bonus secret track. I'm not surprised they start it with 30 seconds of silence and 2 minutes of knocking on a door. Typical secret track stuff, if you ask me. The orchestral (well, keyboard orchestral) main part of the song is pretty good, though, and worth the wait if you like that sort of thing.
All in all, I give it a 3.5 out of 4, which ranks it equal to ACoS (the EP, the '92 version is a 4.0), Inside Out, Perfect Symmetry and As the World, but behind the rest of DT's stuff, Parallels, QR's RFO, O:M and Empire. (List given for comparison so you know how I rank "known" albums)
Lastly, I don't care how james pronounces it: I call it "Eet-See-Jam" That sounds most like how the word would sound backwards. (Well, "Eet-seh-Jam" would be closer, I guess)

I just wanted to mention that I am subcribed to the QR/DT/FW sub (in fact, I was the original host until my computer wnt kablooey and King Lerxt took over as host, thus keeping the sub alive). I'm also on his Rushral Music Discussion subs. Let me tell you guys, Lerxt is a CD MANIAC! <G>
BTW, it it was MY idea to put the three bands together into one subject. I used to host individual Queensryche and Dream Theater subs, but I found the subjects often crossing over, so I combined the two. I'm pretty sure I mentioned all this before, but HEY maybe some of you new 'jammers didn't see my last message.

Question about dubs: Shouldn't you only have to pay for the price a blank tape when someone dubs for you, if even that? I don't think anyone should pay $6 for a dub. Do most people who do dubs CHARGE for them?

I think I know what they represent. Does it have to do with the fact that Ytse is to played by your LEFT hand while Jam is to be played by your RIGHT hand?
I also noticed that Joe sort of switched the roles of Ytse and Jam. I'd have thought Ytse would be Brain and Jam would be Pinky, considering their personalities and intelligence levels. Of course, the problem is that the cartoon is Pinky and The Brain and to compare that to Ytse and The Jam, would make Ytse Pinky and Jam Brain.
Still, it was funny stuff. But leave it to me to analyze the intellectual content behind the humor. <G>

I've seen this before. It's QUITE old. I doubt there's any kind of "social justice" invloved. I've heard that this has had several incarnations and is not mutually exclusive to Neiman Marcus. Basically, this is a CROCK OF SHIT and it does not belong on the list!
