I just picked up this fine CD and was wondering if anyone knew the date
of the show on it and the club/theater/wherever at which it was recorded.
Also, big thanks to Jon Kretschmer and Dave Peterson for dubbing stuff
for me... my roomie and I can't listen to 'em enough.

Mr. Bahr--I looooooooooooooooooooooove Long Island Expressway!! Too bad
jams like this aren't usually major release material... Myung is great
on this one! (Not that he isn't great the rest of the time... I'm a bass
afficionado and bassist wannabe and this track is ear candy for me.)

On the "I'm tired of wading through Ytse and Jam" thread, I like 'em. I
think creativity keeps this place alive.. To me, reading nothing but posts
like "DT rulz" and "wow prog rock is cool", although being reassuring
that there are people out there who have exquisite taste in music, would
be boring. Wackiness, like a spoonful of molasses in the morning, is
good for you. Well I don't know about the molasses. Thanks for reading.

    You know what?
I can't think of two DT songs that are alike. I'm not talking about
real vague things, like time signature, or key signature, or length. I
mean, like Metallica for example, there are lots of songs that sound alike.
But, I can't think of any DT songs that are. Hmmm.
About my visual music. E-mail me and let me know if you like it or
don't like it. If more people don't (Adam Cook) than do (Bafu Vai), then I
might think about stopping it. In the meantime....HERE'S ONE!!!

                                          dada (repeat)

doing this? I'm just curious. :-)

    re: similarities

i dont really see the similarities... i have really good ears and
perfect pitch and all, and after listening to acos and horizons
immediately after, i cant see the similarities... different keys, chord
progressions, melodies, different development, etc. i did however
realize that horizons is the acoustic guitar thing that's been rolling
around in my head for about a year now... probably since the last time
i listened to it (foxtrot isn't really my favorite genesis cd).

after this i kinda doubt your ideas of similarities. i dont really see
the one between SM and TRS. i'm very familiar with both and i dont see
    it...

what is similar to you about acos and horizons?

I'm with you on TTT, sounds too commercial to me but I do like Surrounded . As for AD on AD I don't care too much for that either.

    >strange. and i sometimes feel like the only person who likes "innocence >faded".

Funny you should say that because I thought that was DT's stab at radio on Awake, again too commercial. I like it about as much as I like TTT, but I can't stand SDV on Awake. They should have left SDV on the cassette instead of Scarred.

just tying 2 threads together here (even if they were started by the same person), the thing about helmet and the thing about jazz and bringing varied outside influences into one's music:

page hamilton, the lead singer/rhythm guitarist/principal songwriter, has a *master's degree* in jazz guitar (he shows it off on "beautiful love," a song that truly touches my heart, on "betty"). you wouldn't know it by listening to their music... but they still kick ass. davegod, take note.

Sorry to use what some women may feel is a derogatory term (no offense intended, I assure you), but I just read three letters in arow by people who read the Ytse and Jam thing and wanted to be unsubscribed.

    Pussies.

That's all I can think of to say. The net is 90% noise, 10% signal, and the ratio here on the Jam is FAR better. All I can assume (especially by the fact that they didn't learn how to unsubscribe properly) is that they're newbies, and they're going to "surf" the rest of "cyberland" on their "info highway" and learn just how fucking good things ARE here on the Jam in comparison.

It just sort of annoys me that a forum such as this, which is readable even in a degenerate state (which happens now and then), is thought to be not worth reading, by someone who apparently does not even know any better. Those wimps should be punished by being forced to read 10 straight days of rec.music.metallica... THEN come on back over to the Jam and tell us how degenerate we are! Muhahahahaaaa!

Although I gotta admit, Bafu, it got old fast and the last incarnation of it probably should have been left on the shelf. Originally it was fantastic though. But then again, on the net, in this fastest of all information media, I would be surprised if trends DIDN'T die the second they started. MTV _wishes_ they had it so good. :)

In other news, I spent the evening drinking heavily, as I did last weekend. Is this post coherent? Because I can't tell for sure, myself. I drank six long island ice teas before I realized what I had been doing, and, feeling perfectly sober, proceeded to attempt to get up from the barstool, and fell flat on the floor. Talk about a hidden buzz!

BTW what are you Jammers' favourite drinks?

I know Mike Portnoy likes Jagermeister... argh. That stuff is jet fuel, I swear it. I like cinnamon schnapps in the same way as Jaeger: good for a sip or a shot, but damned if I'm gonna drink it all night!

I rather like LIITs, Colorado Bulldogs, Three Wise Men (Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, and Jose Cuervo), Vibrating Pussy, and of course the old standby: beer...

For all those guitarists on the point of consigning their axe to the fire after listening closely to TTT or the live TLF solo, or the Lie solo, or the Erotomania solo, or........., here are four things to listen for:

    (i) After the funky solo in TTT in the LiT video, JP plays a scorching missed chord just before the run leading up to the keyboard solo.

(ii) The missed note in the PMU intro on LatM.

(iii) JP's tone (as mentioned recently on the jam) in live versions of the PMU intro. I think this may be because he's using a distorted tone with the volume down on the guitar for the clean part. This allows him to play the first part clean, then whack up the volume for the distorted part without having to change guitar patches. (Just a thought).

(iv) A dodgy patch change in the live version of Ytse Jam on LiT coming out of a solo.

None of these are criticisms - if guitarists make mistakes, its often because they are stretching themselves, and I'd much rather they did this than played stuff they are comfortable with. And yes, in case people are in any doubt, JP is my favourite guitarist!

Hello everybody! How the hell are ya? Bafu... I just read the 'jam with your explanation of Ytse & Jam. I must agree that the 'jam was in a 'Downward Spiral' (Sorry, I forgot, no NIN) and needed a lift. I thought your Y&J posts were very good. For some odd reason I found myself chuckling at the fact that there were four requests to unsubscribe because of your Y&J posts that followed your explanation. I don't know why I thought this was funny... Maybe I'm just a bad seed like you and Mike Bahr ;) ....I agree that we all need to lighten up. Hey... I'm surprised that you haven't been flamed by your reference to Tiamat as a male figure ("...Tiamat himself..."), because Tiamat was a female figure in mythology... although I can't remember which... Babylonian? Don't flame me because I'm ignorant... I'm not discriminating against any particular mythology. Really, I think Odin, Ptah, Zeus, and all the others are as equally cool ;) Oh shit, look what I probably started... religious flames... I'm a good old- fashioned Roman Catholic so don't start any flames about being a pagan for mentioning some mythological figures... Aw shit... Don't flame me for being Roman Catholic... Aww screw it... go ahead... I probably deserve it anyway ;) Bafu & Mike... Keep that humor coming! It is appreciated and enjoyed! Later, Oh, Bafu, speaking of DT, did you see Powder yet? ;) Craig .............................. "Adesso che ho perso la vista,. Ph: 313-337-5671 ..ci vedo meglio e di piu".... Fx: 313-323-8706

Let's decide on a time (or many times) to get together on IRC. I check it every now and then, and nobody's on! So, I say Sunday (tomorrow) at 7:00pm Eastern, since there's an hour off from football. :) Those of you that want people to talk to on #ytsejam, be there at 7:00 tomorrow.

As for pre and post Malibu parties, check my web page for updates. It's at http://www.uvm.edu/~cmerlo/dt.html. See ya later!

I don't know how Mike got the quality so clear from "bootlegs", but I love the sound! A few comments: Why do more than half the songs get faded into? From the rest of the production, I don't think it was a mistake, but half the songs are missing the first measure or two! There's no acoustic song with piano. I have a great version of To Live Forever from James' vocalist audition with Kevin on piano and John P on acoustic guitar...it's beutiful,. Of course, it's too late to request it, but I was wondering why this song did not make it onto the disc? Last, I wouldn't have minded hearing the spoken introductions (especially if it meant not cutting the beginning of the song!)

Thanks for the collector's item, Mike Bahr! I appreciate your efforts! -Adam

Hey all, Let me try this one:

    >Okay, here's one. Hint: It's not Dream Theater (you don't like it??? >Go bugger a hedgehog, okay. Smeghead. (: ) but it is prog. > > bip bip bip bip bip > >boop boop boop boop boop boop bzzt! >

It reminds me of the part in Extreme's _Am I Ever Gonna Change?_ just before the guitar solo. This may not be the "real" answer, but that's what it sounds like to me.

I recieved my copy of Acoustic Dream yesterday, it was number 328. I'd like to thank Make Bahr for the CD and the extra.

Another Day: James singing is really bad, and it seems like John's guitar playing is a tad bit sloppy.

Lifting shadows: Good version of this Song, I'd say it is very different from the album version.

Wait For Sleep: I don't like the tone of the guitar at the beginning of the song, but I guess it is a good imitation of a piano. The rest of it is pretty good.

Silent Man: Pretty muc hthe same as on the record.

Long Island Expressway: Is this a jazz song?

Tears: Really like this version of the song. I'm glad I never heard Geddy singing it. Geddy's voice is really bad.

O Holy Night: Never heard the original, but it doesn't seem like it is all that good of a song to begin with. The recording of James singing didn't seem like it was of the highest quality.

Perfect Strangers: Eerie how much Bruce Dickenson sound like James. This might be a more impassioned playing of the song then on ACOS by the intrumentalists.

Six O'clock, Caught in a Web - I guess I like the new version of caught in a web better because the guitars are more crunchy, but on six o-clock the synthasizer just doesn't seem like it's doing what it needs to.

Voices - Not good sound quality, and they cut out some really cool parts by going to the end to early.

    Bad - don't like U2, and I don't like this song.
