If you want heavier stuff, try their live albums. "Live at the
Whiskey" might be hard to find, but you'll love it. Leftoverture is
generally considered their best album, and I won't argue that point.
Song for America is great - extremely progressive stuff, along with
some bluesy/jazzy songs. Their latest album, "Freaks of Nature" is
pretty good too, and has some rockin' songs. Truly, if you like
Monolith, you'll like all of their stuff.

Leftoverture is a good album. It is well produced and fairly progressive.
It has the song "Carry On Wayward Son" that is part of "The Big Medley" on
ACOS. There are some better songs than that on the cd.

Sorry, but I don't believe this. I cannot fathom why anybody would want
the vocals done on that song to be heard ever again, let alone released
on CD, unless thats the real thing. I mean, if they were gonna replace
the vocals, then James could sing with some emotion, with some energy, I
mean seriously.
I was gonna rant and stuff about the vocals on the rest of the covers,
and about how if/when I have the power, I will make it either highly
illegal for covers to be recorded. They are wrong. Evil. They're like CDs
and bad acid, not for production or consumption. Oh yeah. But I wont rant
about that.
Of all the people who have recently been claiming_to_be/
asking_if_they_were unique in liking/not_liking a song, knowing about a
band, ect, I probably have something none of you can touch. I have
listened to ACoS like once in the last 3 or 4 weeks. Top that.
The problem is that I don't like the covers, and while the title song is
amazing, I neither like it as much as previous versions nor have a great
urge to listen to it recently. When I do listen to it, it is great, save
a few parts that really bug me. However, it seems to be missing that
something that will make me pick that CD over someother one...

That last one-- I've seen that in a few different places
1. In CiaW right before where Mike usually goes into the drum solo live.
2. In The Ytsejam, at the end of the little drum solo part.
3. In ACoS, at 1:44:50 (one minute, 44 and a half seconds into the
friggin' thing) -- except only the last two sextuplets of those you
mentioned.
4. In The Ytsejam, a little before the first key solo, except that one
isn't a descending tom thing and it's straight sixteenth notes, done
kinda polyrhythmically, if you know what I mean (he alternates between
the snare and a tom for each set of four, and then two on the feet).
There are probably many more....

I thought Jon and Paul O'Neil wrote *most* of the last 2 albums?
I've only recently discovered Savatage, and I wonder why Jon Oliva wasn't
part of the band anymore while still maintaining quite a bit of creative
control.

OK, time to vent.
Why is it that people can't figure out how to unsubscribe?
I'm tired of seeing all the dumb*ss emails from whining
jerks requesting that they be removed from the list. For
starters, if you want to unsubscribe, do so; and do it as
instructed in the email you recieved when you first
subscribed to the list. I don't know about the rest of you,
but I could care less about someone's reasons for leaving
the list; what's the point in posting them?
Also, I want to give a big thumbs up to Bafu Vai for the
YTSE & JAM chronicles. Pardon the harsh obscenity, but FUCK
the people that whined about this. They're the ones that
need to take a closer look at what was being said. I
personally found the whole thing hilarious and well worth
the time spent reading it.
Ok, I DO have some DT content in this email. Does anyone
know if there are any keyboard transcriptions to anything
off of Images and Words? Preferably Metropolis? I would be
eternally grateful. (Hopefully this question hasn't been
asked before, I've only been on the list for a month).

Well, been real busy and haven't had time to post, but I am
actually caught up on jams for once.
First, big thanks go to Mike Bahr, Mike Burstin, and Jason Giles. I
had a wonderful chock full o'dt week and half because of you guys.
Got my copy of AD, Kev's demos (finally) and my Ytsejam shirt.
They all just rock. I LOVE Acoustic Dreams. It's just amazing.
Nothing more to say. No long review :) As for Kev's demos, I really
like em. I think its a real interesting direction and I can't wait
to hear the new demos as soon as we can get dubs :) The
Ytsejam Tshirts are very cool too. I love how they look and the Glow in
the Dark "Let the light surround you" is cool.
Oh, question on Kev's demos. I know this has prolly been asked 1,000
times before, but what album is Song for Eric originally on?
New CDs. Well, I have bought way too many CDs in the last week. I've
gotten the New Alice in Chains, Tori - Little Earthquakes, Iron Maiden -
X Factor, Korn, both Life of Agony Cds, the new Anthrax, Acoustic Dreams,
Kev's demos, and the new Machines of Loving Grace. Quick Reviews:
AiC - good so far. Haven't given it a real listen yet.
Tori - very cool.
Maiden - Ummm, It's Maiden, not good ole Maiden, but Maiden.
Korn - Heavy, Emotional, very cool.
Anthrax - pretty good, so far
Life of Agony - Ugly is not as Heavy as River runs Red, but both
are very cool. You gotta hear these guys do "Don't you
forget about me" It kicks ass.
Acoutic Dreams - AMAZING AMAZING.
Kev's Demos - I think I reviewed these already
Machines of Loving Grace - not as Industrial as their last one,
but still pretty good.
Stuff on the Jam. Jam seems like a kinder , gentler jam lately,
I'm really liking it (especially since I am keeping up) Mike Bahr
a bigot? Nahhhhh ... I don't think someone who has been so giving and
helpful to all of us should even be accused of this shit. Ytse & Jam
ruled. I'm gonna put it on my new and improved web page which I may
actually have time to work on this weekend :):) Anyone wanna do
some sort of cartoon characters for em??? I think that would rule.
It's ytsejam's own version of Ren and Stimpy or Beavis and Butthead.

If all you have is _Monolith_ and you love it, then you're in for a treat, because they have a lot of stuff that's better. It's almost universally agreed that _Leftoverture_ is their best work. However, if you like longer, progressive epic-type songs, go for their earlier stuff like _Song For America_.
If you like Steve Morse, get the two albums for which he was in the band- _Power_ and _In the Spirit of Things_. If you like loud, fast, and heavy, get the new album, _Freaks of Nature_. Anyone who likes DT should LOVE this album!!
If you're just not sure, I recommend the KANSAS boxed set-it's a great deal-2 75 min. CDs, usually for less than $30. That way you can see what you like the best.

HELP!!!! I just found out that another NYC-area band is using the name "Pawn Shop." (btw, my band is pawnShop.) They're signed to some small-potatoes indie label and have released a 2-song demo. My band has been gigging since '92 with the name pawnShop, and released (independently) 2 demos, one in June '94 and one in August '95. Does anyone out there know what we can do to keep our name? Please, please, PLEASE tell me if there's anything we can do!

To all the great people that have responded to my "Metamorphosis" question, I forgot to mention the main reason I asked...
Basically (and this might be a good thread idea) I want to write a song with a Metamorphosis-type theme to it, and I thought to myself "Hey, there are a whole bunch of artisitcally-minded people on the 'Jam...maybe .." So anyway, I'm just saying that the story set my mind roving into new realms and I want to see if there's anyone else out there.
Any ideas?

I pointed this out a couple weeks ago, about how the vocals on the original Ronnie Scott's "Perfect Strangers" were different from the ACOS version, and someone else posted that "all bands" re-touch tracks when they do live albums. I had no idea all bands did this, but oh well, you learn something new every day.

I can't actually HEAR much on the original Ronnie Scott's show, but I'll take your word for it that it's listenable. :)

This is what I heard, and I believe this statement originated from the drum-god himself, Mike Portnoy:
***WARNING*** The following description will be much easier to follow if you actually have a picture of the symbol in front of you!
The symbol is made up of three overlapping mirror-images: a "D", a "T", and an "M".
The circle that outlines the symbol is actually a mirror-image of a "D" (the "D"s are back-to-back).
The lines across the top and bottom and the vertical line through the middle are the mirror-image of the "T" (kind of like a "T" and then another upside-down "T" overlapping it.
(The line going through the middle, incidentally, is also the "spine" of the mirror-imaged "D"s)
The diagonal lines are created by the mirror-image of the "M"--the "M"s are upside-down like the "T"s.
And if you haven't figured out the meaning behind the actual letters, "D" and "T" obviously stand for Dream Theater, and the "M" stands for Majesty, which was the band's original name (sorry for that obvious piece of trivia, but there may be some ytsenewcomers--there's another one, Bafu!--who don't know that yet!)
I hope that description made sense. It's a lot easier to show someone than to try and explain it!
