I have. Gregor reminds me of that "cool" guy on the list who hates all music
but Progressive Rock.
BTW. Has anybody heard of a band called Roach? Their CD "On My Back" is
awesome. They're a mixture of Jazz, Rap and traditional Heavy Metal. Dave
Matthews even makes a guest appearance.

Yes, and just to confuse us even further: one of the two new guitarists
is actually an old guitarist. Christopher Caffery was a member of
Savatage during the Gutter Ballet days.
And Jon Oliva is now back in the band after a two-album leave of absence
(even though he continued to write and produce and even play some stuff),
but he's not pictured with the band or directly listed with the rest of
the band members inside the DWD CD jacket...but he IS pictured in the
Japanese release. Why is that?

No. It's all new. It's a rock opera that vocalist Zachary Stevens wrote
about the war in Bosnia.
And now that we have finally gotten this all straightened out: go out and
buy the album! It's great! (I still don't think it surpasses Mindcrime

Concerning Mike Bahr and Hairball,
The fact that Light Fuse and Get Away was only played twice with James
on vocals is correct to my knowledge, which came from Mike Portnoy. However,
to dispute Hairball, both shows that Mike spoke of were in Europe. I don't
remember the exact country(ies), but they were definitely both in Europe on the
Images & Words tour. They only played it twice because "it just didn't
happen."
Mike, you surprised me with your post regarding the search for a copy
of this song, because I was under the impression that Mike Portnoy was giving
you the better of the two copies, specifically because he supports the idea of
'When Dream and Today Unite.' When I talked to him, he did mention that he had
both shows on tape, but at the time, I couldn't convince him to release them to
us. I was under the impression that you were able to change his mind, for the
purpose of WDATU. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you hve both
versions. Anyway, enlighten me to the details of the real search, if my
assumptions are invalid, and dammit, gimme a copy of the version that won't
make the WDATU CD. Sorry, I lost my collectiveness there for a moment. Thanks
again for the services you are providing to the 'jam, although I'm not
financially able to participate.
KAI - yjlhb - although seriously considering jumping on Hairball's bandwagon.
p.s. I still like WDAJU better.

Cool name! I was waiting for a post about Paula Abdul's first release from her "Spellbound" album, though.

It just occurred to me that what Mike Bahr really meant when he said:
> I do not discriminate due to gender, national origin, or even, yes, > sexual orientation.
Was --> I don't discriminate due to:
1. Gender. 2. National Origin. 3. Even things, like the number 4, balanced scales, and perfectly-level tables. 4. Yes, so he obviously likes their music. 5. Sexual Orientation. Somehow I missed this day back when I started high school.
I hope this clears up any of the recent accusations.

By popular demand... Skip if you hated all that stuff...
Firstly, the Y&J stories are finished, done, overwith, you can hope for their future, but there will not be one. So that makes one less Fucking Idiot posting irrelevant stuff. Okay, now the Why:
About three weeks ago, this mailing list was falling fast into the pits of Chaos and Misery. People were at each other's throats, the flaming was relentless(some of which I myself added to), and "unsubscribe" posts abounded. I figured what Ytsejam needed was a good mirror to wake it up.
And you know, I think it worked.
(I think it's gonna be alright, yes, the worst is over now, the Ytsejams are shining like a red JPM100...)
What did I gain from this? Aside from having fun writing it, having fun reading people's reactions to it, and in general seeing the intended results of posting the stories actually appear in the forms of a little peace and tranquility, I gained the illustrious title of "Fucking Idiot" to add to my ever-growing collection of nicknames.
For those of you who have never seen my Trophy Room Of Ytsejam Nicknames, some of them look like this: "Asshole." "Loser." "Tofu Satriani." "Crazy Fuck." "Sick Fuck." "Mercy Fuck." In my opinion, "Fucking Idiot" is one of the hardest titles to earn on a mailing list, as it deals with the actual knowledge of the poster himself, which is virtually impossible to determine, thus I am honored to have been granted such a nickname after many months of honest, dedicated, idiotic fucking around. :)
Ytse and Jam represented the two sides of every argument presented in each of the stories, which was basically a collection of every argument I've seen brought up on this list. An argument on a mailing list of 1000+ people really has to be split right down the middle in order for the topic to last, right? Every topic I can remember reading about for extended periods of time on this list had literally half of the members in favor of, and half opposed to. That is, the members who chose to post opinions.
Ytse was the nice, calm, rational, understanding 'jammer, who attempted to defend the members of DT whenever possible, and wasn't opposed to lapsing onto tangents and talking about things that weren't necessarily DT. These were the people who brought up languages, technical stuff, music theory corrections, insightful lyrical interpretations, and in general, helpful, informative posts. (Airdance is this. I am half-this. Frank was not this.)
Jam was the loud, uproarious, gutter-mouthed jammer that defended whatever he/she happened to believe in VEHEMENTLY. Jammy-jammers slammed DT a lot, especially James LaBrie, and were always first in line to jump on people when they posted stuff either (1) not directly related to Dream Theater, or (2) stuff not immediately recognizable as DT-related. These were the people I would always get pissed off at because it seemed as if they didn't actually read the 'jams, but instead just wrote hasty replies without doing much thinking. I don't want to name names, but a lot of people do this sort of thing.
Davegod.
In a way, the stories were almost Jungian. I'm glad some of you enjoyed them, and I hope I didn't drive anyone to unsubscribe because of them, as that was not my intent. Perhaps we can all learn to be more Ytse-jammers and less Jammy-jammers, which would make us...... Ytsejammers. (neat, huh?)

Partly because those "POW"'s and "dada"'s could be in a billion songs out there (probably several different DT's), next we don't know what time signature it's in, and it just seems ridiculous to look at music or rhythms like that. It just don't work. It seems like something Beavis and Butthead would do. You know, with all that "duhduhduhd dah dah" they do. At least they make it funny...well that's just IMHO

Jammers,
Just wondering if anyone has read anywhere if Myung has ever experimented playing with a Chapman Stick ? His playing style seems to be highly suited to this instrument and I would think it's the next logical step from a 6 string bass. For those who aren't very familiar with the Stick, it is a 10 or 12 string instrument that is almost entirely a fretboard and is typically played by tapping the strings at either end. Made famous by Tony Levin in King Crimson.

Thanks publicly to Mike Bahr for Acoustic Dreams. I love this !!

There are some CD players that can play 3" CDs without an adapter. Portable CD players can play them, my LaserDisc player can (yes, it's not a standard American CD player, but was made by the people who invented CDs. Actually it was Pioneer, which is a subdivision of Phillips, who invented the CD), and my former cheap CD car stereo could play them as well without an adapter (that was before I got my CD changer). The car stereo instruction manual never mentioned that it could play it that way. I just figured I'd try it and it accepted it. The only thing was that it was a little harder to remove than a 5" CD.

Hello Jammers,
Just to spite those who say "DT Only!" and to promote the edification of the rest of you, my Unsigned and Indie Label bands page now has sound files, I plan to rotate them every few weeks. On the page right now (found at):
http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~mbacko1/munsign.html
Please give me feedback on the sound files, I want to know if they sound alright for the size I have to make them due to disk space constraints.
Threshold --------- Into the Light (sound bite) off of Psychedelicatessan
These guys are a really awesome melodic progressive metal band! One of my favorite groups currently, I have all of the contact info on my page if you want to order their stuff. Chris Lamka at Of sound Mind has it in the store at the moment (410)529-7082 if you are interested. And I think Cdconnection has it as well.
Iluvatar -------- Haze (sound bite) off of Children
Iluvatar is a prog-rock band based in Baltimore (I am friends with Glen the vocalist) which shows some great potential in the Rush/Marillion/Genesis area of prog. They are probably too light for the metal-heads on here, but check out the clip and see, it won't kill you.
Leger De Main ------------- To Live the Truth (sound Bite) off of The Concept of Our Reality
Leger De Main is a band from Pennsylvannia, a trio featuring a female vocalist, a guitarist/synth/kkeys/bass player, and a drummer. The music has a lot of parallels to Dream Theater (Metropolis type stuff) with souring female vocals over the top. Good stuff, I have only listened to it a few times since I have only had the CD for about a week. I have links on my page directly to the band, so it shouldn't be hard to pick it up.
Other News ---------- I will also be putting a Mastermind clip up there shortly.
I am also going to index the page to make it easier to traverse.
The Inferno home page is coming along, I am in the process of getting a couple of photos scanned, and i should have the beginnings of a page shortly.
As soon as I find a good background pattern I am going to Netscape enhance the page.
I really am looking forward to meeting several Jammers at the Birch Hill show, I got my ticket in the maiil yesterday.
For all those who use Netscape, those damn Netscape cache files can eat up your disk space! I killed about 2 MEGS of them yesterday. Especially bad if you only have a 5 MEG account size on the UNIX machine.
I'm going to see Phish in 2 weeks!!!!!
Later,
Mike Backof

Hi everybody
Today is poets day (piss off early tommorrow's Saturday) and before finishing work and going to have a few drinks with my friends, I'll just take a couple of minutes to send the Jam some of my random rumblings and ravings.
Number one for today is a simple question, to which I hope to see a lot of answers. Which song/title by which artist would you really like to see (hear) DT cover (and why, if possible). My choice is Sound Chaser by Yes (on Relayer). There are some tremendous rhythm and tempo changes in there, and the sounds that Steve Howe gets out of the pedal steel guitar would be a real challenge for JP. Over to you, Jammers!
Number two is a sort of follow-on to some things I posted last week. Those of you with a memory retention span of more than 10 seconds may remember that I found some similarities between some old Genesis songs and DT/Shadow Gallery. Last night I was listening to Awake (see, I *do* listen to DT occasionaly), and I was struck for the nth time by the similarity between the strings/mellotron type stuff on 'The Silent Man' and 'The Rain Song' by Led Zeppelin from the under-rated album 'Houses of the Holy'. Not the same, but I think they are very similar. The other similarity the struck me last night is on 'Innocence Faded. This time it is JP's solo from about 5 minutes onwards. It reminds me a lot of the sound and style of Jan Akkermann, who used to play for the Dutch band Focus. I can't really pin it down to a particular song: perhaps some Dutch Jammers might care to check it out.
Number three is a short story inspired by a DT song. Here goes:
Chapter 1 .. .. The End
It was, of course, 'The Silent Man'. Easy, eh?
I may have asked this before, but are there any other Jammers who are divers? 'Pull Me Under' often goes through my mind just before starting a descent.
Well, I guess that's enough from me for today, but I must share one last little thing with you before I go. While surfing the web at lunch time today, I found a site with a whole stack of screen savers (http://www.sirius.com/~ratloaf/) and one of them is of Blind Melon throwing soup into your face. Anybody interested?
stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de)

Hi Jammers! I'm back now and I have very good news. All right, that may be good only for people like me.The first thing, which is DT releated,is that I got ACOS.And it's incredibble. The song is amazing. The music and the lyrics, too. I think that Portnoy done a good job.The cover versions are great and I think that the best from those is Perfect Strangers and the Zep medley. Oh, my favorite part of the ACOS is Another World.I read in an older Ytsejam that the guys in this list like it,too. Last month I was in Bucharest to see an Iron Maiden concert. This was the 1st time when I saw the one of the bands from those I like very much. This was the concert for my life.(But I hadn't see DT yet...) I didn't have their last album, but I think that that's good. And about Savatage. My friend bought for me the Dead Winter Dead album, but he lives in another town so I couldn't listen to it yet.But his opinion is that it's very good, but he misses the faster parts. But I saw in the list, that someone wrote that it's very good.I trust in him.Until this time I guess that their best (one of the best albums in the world) is Streets.I have their albums from Hall Of the Mountain King and I have the Dr.Butcher album, too.The singer and the ex-guitarist (Criss R.I.P) are very greats. Another non DT content:did you hear the last Gamma ray album? So if you not go and listen to the "Land Of The Free". Andris P.S.:Yitchak Rabin...R.I.P.

Why does this piss you off? This guy is crazy about DT! He was just having a good time! I get a good laugh every time I hear him!

Hi guys and gals...
There's at least 4 of us (maybe 8 or 9 of us) who need a floor to crash on in the NJ or NY area... We're coming up from FL to see the show on Dec. 29 and would like to bum around the big apple for a day or two... Please E-mail me if you have some floor space and would be willing to house at least 4 jammers...
Thanks, Jay Peele For info on INFERNO, E-mail: jpeele@unf6.cis.unf.edu

The first album and Song For America are probably the most progressive, so check those out, too. They just came out with a new album earlier this year, called Freaks of Nature. It's really good, they even got a violin player back. I'm going to see them Saturday night. Ytsejammers,
Does anybody know what happened to CDeurope? The last few times I've tried telnetting there, there's been no such host. They have some of my money, so I'm hoping that this is only temporary.

A few little things...
!. People are beginning to mail me asking why their AD isn't there yet. As though it needed any emphasis, please _don't_ mail me just to ask this! The reason being is that if I'm honest, I cannot possibly give a good answer. If your CD is in the mail, that's all I can say... it's in the mail, and on the way. I don't flag the dates they were sent because postal service here is so irregular that it becomes useless information. And if it hasn't been sent yet, I can't "go a little faster just for you"... your copy will be sent out in order like everyone else's, since it's only fair. I've packaged up to number 370, but there are a good 30-40 discs sitting here ready to send, and except for today being a holiday, I've been taking down a couple armloads every weekday and dropping them in the mail. So please, please, I beg of you all, don't mail me asking where your CD is unless you had like number 200 and it _still_ isn't there yet, because it's a piece of mail that I can do absolutely nothing with unless I wanna lie and say "Welp, it's in the mail, I'll see what I can do to speed it along!" Which is impossible.
@. The new Alice in Chains album is "good" so far, and may grow better in time. Jar of Flies matured amazingly well, Dirt somewhat well, Facelift not so well, so I guess they must be improving.
#. Thanks for all your support about my not being a bigot. It really means a lot to me, and I appreciate it.
$. Got a new car stereo installed and I couldn't believe the bonehead error the guy makes. The stereo only has two RCA outs and I am running four speakers... boomers behind the seat and 3-ways in the side kickpanels. So he needs to do a split, and what does he do? Instead of splitting the left to both lefts, and the right to both rights, he splits the left to the two fronts, and the right to the behind-the-seats! I couldn't believe it once I figured it out. I threw in Awake to hear the 6:00 drum circle envelop me at top volume, and it really didnt move much. Confused, I threw in YYZ, and instead of zigzagging in front of me, the triangle rhythm kept going ahead and behind me. It took a whopping five minutes to fix (if that) but ya gotta wonder, what kind of nimrod wires it the way it was wired??
%. I have a sort of a bastardized Canadian-Southern-Arizonan-Highland with a touch of New York (parents) accent, and Mike Portnoy got a big kick out of it. I guess when you're reading my mail, think of it as though Geddy Lee were saying it, but be more careless with conjuctions and y'all's.
^. Figure this one out, DT fanatics...
pssh pssh pssh pssh pssh pssh tom tom toom ta boom boom boom
Repeat ad infinitum.
