     Hi All,

I was just reading usenet (while I should have been working) and I
came across the third annual album of the year poll. It is going on
from now until November 30. Awake won last year so this year I think
we should all vote for ACOS. Here are the details I got from usenet:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    *** BEST ALBUM OF 1995 SURVEY ***

(Vote for albums released in or after November 1994)

Yes, metal fans, it's that time of year again - time for the
*THIRD ANNUAL* Best Album of the Year Survey.

This year, I have automated the process even more than before,
by having the voting take place via the World Wide Web: You will
need access to a forms capable WWW browser, such as Netscape or
    Lynx.

Please read the rules carefully, on the form, and thanks for all
those who have contributed to the last two surveys.

    Winners:

    1995 - ?????
    1994 - Dream Theater "Awake"
1993 - Anthrax "Sound of White Noise"

THIS YEAR THE SURVEY WILL TAKE PLACE BETWEEN:

    NOVEMBER 5 - NOVEMBER 30

You may vote for any album RELEASED IN OR AFTER NOVEMBER 1994!

To vote for the BEST ALBUM OF 1995, have your Web browser point to:
    http://csbr.csbs.uni.edu/bestof95/

All votes will be reviewed and verified, before the final tally is
    posted.

If you *DO NOT* have forms capability or World Wide Web access, you
can receive an e-mail based survey form, by sending e-mail to:
Thomas.Turner@uni.edu with the SUBJECT LINE: BEST OF 1995

    Best Album of 1995 Survey
    Tom Turner

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

So load up that Web browser and vote DT the best again. No other band
out there should even come close! Adios.

    Jason

    I'll keep this short.
This is directed to whoever is a Christian or related to a native
    American or has acne or...

How come you're so touchy? If someone cracks a joke that insults
the group you belong to, you needn't start to whine about it in
    public.
Now, if serious flames were being thrown here towards Christians
or Muslims or Blackhawks, it might be reasonable to take offense,
but even in that case it wouldn't belong to the _Dream Theater_
    mailing list.
And whining about silly jokes certainly doesn't. Please stop it,
you're definitely not making the situation any better.

Ok, I'll get off my soapbox and either lurk or talk about DT for
    the next few weeks. I promise .... O :-)

p.s. Mike Bahr and Bafu Vai both rule, and aside from Dream Theater
being the greatest band in the universe, they're the two things
(should I say persons? Nah, they're not touchy :)) that keep me
reading this list eagerly and happily.

    Take care all,

The question of the day is...Aren't any of you people vocalists! Every DT show I run into a million and one guitar players bragging of how they can play like that, yet I always seem to be the only one up there professing to sing as strongly. Oh well..perhaps we are just few and far between. I remember standing in the doorway of Bear Tracks, gabbing with the owner trying to listen in on the new material...Those were the days. I also would just like to say that I give alot of credit to Kevin Moore for being such a phenomanol musician, yet having the grace to stand in the wings and play a supporting role for so long..Perhaps it is finally time to shine!-Heather of Dragonlady

Folks, Nothing sounds like Dream Theater. Nothing sounds like Savatage. Nothing sounds like Fatez. Nothing sounds like queensryche. You cant compare these bands with each other. It just does not work. No one compares to Dream Theater cause they are not JP JM JL MP DS. It is like trying to compare apples and oranges. Just stop it. All bands have their own unique sound. Yes, the STYLES may be SIMILAR, but the SOUND is DIFFERENT. The above is just intend as an example. Flame me again if you like, I dont give a shit and will just ignore it. You shall not be heard. Hi all! This is my first post.

First of all, I got AD #337 two days ago. (yay) Are the versions of "Lie" and CIAW on AD just the demos?

Secondly, Martin Hayter: > Subject: "JP is human" rumour proved!

    > For all those guitarists on the point of consigning their axe to the fire after > listening closely to TTT or the live TLF solo, or the Lie solo, or the > Erotomania solo, or........., here are four things to listen for:

Do you have the Majestic Harmonies bootleg? Well, on that version of TTT, JP plays the most screwed-up solo (during the outtro) I have ever heard. He starts playing it fine, but by the next few measures, he just goes way off! It's hilarious! He seems to try to recover the solo, but it just gets worse. Does anybody know what happened? Was J.P. plastered or something? Or did he mean to do that..... just wondering.

Whoah, you don't know how close you actually got.

The above is the intro "Time to Kill" by Gentle Giant.

Listen to Gentle Giant. They're awesome.

Anyway, here's my next quiz. Dream Theater are great Fates Warning fans. On _Parallels_, Fates Warning includes a lyric from another band which Dream Theater are fans of. For double your money and a chance to win a new car, so you can destroy the environment and kill thousands of household pets, name the band and the lyric.

This trivia question will have you sweating and swearing. I guarantee it. Furthermore, you will kick yourselves if someone else comes up with answers you hadn't thought of yet. Here it is:

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to think of bands that meet the three following criteria:

    1) They must have at least five recordings (EPs count), released on a wide scale from major labels (so, like, old demos and stuff don't count)

    2) They must still be an actively recording or touring band

    3) Their personnel lineup must be exactly the same on every single release.

So, for example, Hootie and the Blowfish is not a valid answer (see Rule #1). Neither is Led Zeppelin (see #2) or Anthrax (see #3).

How many can you come up with? I've thought of about 6 or 7.

Tasteless and thoughtless. There are Christians on this jam of which I am one and though I can see how some "non-believers" would find this amusing and maybe even some Christians as well, I don't see the humor. I'm not getting "starched white" on you but Jesus did leave us hope when He ceased to become mortal. Please be more considerate of us from now on.<<

How thin skinned are we all gonna get here? I didn't say anything about MB's "Indian" joke becasue it wasn't offensive, it was just pretty dumb (and don't start with me, my great-grandmother is a full blooded Cherokee and she tells some of the funniest Indian jokes I've ever heard) (and yes, she is older than dirt). But the Christian joke made me laugh out loud. I consider myself a Christian too, so don't start in on me there either. But, if we can't laugh at ourselves, and a little at each other then we're all gonna look like assholes. And if you think that God doesn't have a sense of humor count the number of holes in your body and reconsider. The joke was niether tasteless (what's sicker than a truckload of dead babies...?) nor thoughtless (I'm sure someone had to think pretty hard to come up with such a clever idea). I agree that we should all realize that JC's first visit was enough to give us all hope, but it was also enough to give us a lot of funny material to expand upon. Please don't make my God (and some of yours' too) look stupid by claiming that every little thing said about Him/Her/It makes you freak out. Have a little more personal faith and not so much public face at stake when it comes to your religion.

Oops! That was a little harsher than I intended. This is not a flame, just some constuctive criticism. Take it or wipe your ass with it, I don't care. I just had to get that off my chest. I like the very friendly (except for Franks, etc...) nature of this list. Let's not spoil it by losing our senses of humor.

I also noticed the similarity between this song and the passage mentioned by someone earlier. In fact, my first impression of Awake was somewhat leesened (needless to say, I've changed this through many repeated listenings) by the fact that several times in AMBI, I noticed similarities to other bands. In general, I though the keyboards at the beginning of Erotomania could have been lifted from just about any Kansas album, and Silent Man reminded me of some popular acoustic song that Extreme did not too long before. Anyone else hear the same influences?

I just got back from Drum Fest '95. I was there to help Jay Peele find a new drummer for Inferno (check them out if you haven't already), and to learn a thing or two. Even though I'm a guitar player, it doesn't hurt to know a little about drumming. It helps not only with your sense of time and meter, but it makes you more aware and more considerate of drummers, and it expands your musical knowledge in general. Besides, I met a drummer that's interested in playing with me, and the DT fans that I met there absolutely loved my Ytsejam t-shirt. :) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ minimal DT content that's semi-relevant to the 'jam.

Alan White was incredible. He triggered some samples from Yes songs and alternated between playing along and improvising around them! Then he just went balistic for a while before stopping to answer questions.

Yes, the mid-70's lineup of Anderson, Howe, Squire, Wakeman and White have reunited. They're rehearsing some old material, writing new stuff and gearing up to do a mini-tour in February and a bigger tour later on next year.

Fun fact: When Alan White joined the band, he had 3 days to learn a shitload of songs because they had some upcoming gigs.

Unfortunately, I think his appearance was a one-off deal. He said something to the effect that he was taking a couple days off from rehearsing with Yes to do the clinic.

I also ran into a guy who's trying to put together a "Prog Day" type event down here in S. Florida, sometime in March. He's trying to get Echolyn to headline the event.

    Here are a few points.....

    1. To those of you who wondered why DT has yet to play scarred LIVE, has any thought that maybe Derek has not yet learned it. Not that I am flaming him because I love the work he did on ACOS, including the newer stuff he wrote. But remember that when he joined the band he had BIG shoes to fill, in a very complex musical environment, and has done a great job, in my opinion. Maybe, he has yet to learn the song well enough to play it in concert.

    2. I just bought Yes - Fragile. AWESOME! I thought that since DT was playing Heart Of the Sunrise in concerts that I better find out what it was like. It is some pretty cool stuff, very different, but cool. I HATE jon Anderson voice though. Rick Wakeman is AWESOME on Keys.

    3. Anyone besides me notice that almost none of the acoustic tracks on Acoustic Dreams contains any keyboards. Was alot of this stuff recorded after Kevin quit, but before Derek joined.

    4. Jordan Rudess, who supposedly is an AWESOME keyboardist, and has won many KEYBOARD Magazine readers polls, played a concert with DT. Does anyone know where I can get some of his original material. Does he have any albums, or played with any bands (Other than the Dregs - he is not on the full circle album, although he toured on it), and which album of his should I get?

Thanks, See you at the EL-N-GEE on 12/27.

Apparently you have no convictions. Of course you'll keep it short you have no affiliations. Do you take a stand for anything or anybody?

    >How come you're so touchy? If someone cracks a joke that insults >the group you belong to, you needn't start to whine about it in >public.

Like I told the other person who responded to my post; you could write me in person (instead of publicly) and whine as YOU are doing in your post instead of taking the approach you have. Are you trying to prove how touchy you're not?

    >And whining about silly jokes certainly doesn't. Please stop it, >you're definitely not making the situation any better.

Yes you are correct it was "a silly little joke", but when it comes to God and Jesus Christ to whom we will all answer to one day, I will always have a voice of and for respect for the diety of His work and His pain and sacrafice for us.

Let me give you other things to poke and kid about instead; I'm an average white male: height 5:8, I don't have a four year degree (ignorant) and I also listen to Sade and Sting and progressive Jazz artists too. I sometimes get speeding tickets and I'm a right wing radical, I think abortion is infanticide, I'm and Dallas Cowboys fan and I get pissed off when people don't use their turn signals because I do. I also drive fast in the left lane and the speed limit in the other lanes. Oh don't let me leave out, I'm of Irish decent and I'm against these new "Big Brother" gun laws and passive people who have nothing to stand for except themselves.

Go ahead, that should give you enough to put down.

hello to everyone who ordered a T-Shirt from me. First of all, thanks for supporting this endeavor! To those who have received their shirts(s), I hope they are what you expected, and you are happy with their quality.

Second of all, and more importantly, I apologize profusely to those who have not received theirs yet. THe only reason you should not have received your shirt(s) yet is because your order contained an XXL shirt. The reason for the delay is due to the printers forgetting the XXLs, shipping me XLs in their place. They supposeduly shipped the XXls on Tuesday, but I found out on Friday that they had lied to me and really shipped them on Thursday. This upsets me quite a bit because this is the second shirt company that has lied to me about shipping, and in the end it affects you most. Unfortunately these delays are beyond my control, and I will get those shirts out to you the moment I receive them (hopefully Monday). Thank you for your patience, I realize that an excuse is still an excuse, thanks for bearing with me.

    Humbly,

    jason jgiles@crl.com

Here's the problem. I go to a music store in the central New Jersey area. Looking for Rush, DT, Yes albums on CD and bootlegs on CD. No luck, except for some Yes albums that I didn't have. Can't find the Lie single. And as far as lesser known prog bands like Shadow Gallery and Magellan, forget it. For all intents and purposes, they don't exist in Jersey. I want these CDs, but can't find them. Where the hell do I go? I've checked all over the place from chain stores like The Whiz to little shops that carry rare Doors and Beatles shit but no prog. What is this world coming to?

Let's start this potentially disastrous thread right now.

Some people have been pointing out JP's mistakes. Who else from the band, past lineups included has made a disastrous mistake or butchered a song really badly, or maybe just minutely. I can think of one right off the bat: on Consciously Unreal, the bootleg, the second disc where Charlie is singing metropolis, the man cannot stay on key no matter what happens. And, on the Milan 1993 bootleg during Take the Time, right after the part where the Italian sample should come in, but they stop and let the crowd yell it out, there is a sloppy entry back into the music. (MP screwed it all up, I think, but the whole reentry sounded bad). That's all I can think of right now, but I would love to hear more.BTW, I can't hear the missed not in the latm version of PMU. Sorry, but somebody should point it out to me.

Don't even try it. John Petrucci is in league with Satan. The man sold his soul in exchange for flawless technique and a bottomless bag of tricks. :)

I wondered about that! I do remember something in the D&D cartoon that mentioned Tiamat was female, on more than one occasion.

    > Oh, Bafu, speaking of DT, did you see Powder yet? ;)

Yeah, speaking of DT, I think I'll go grab some scalding-hot Tang.

Actually, I think this one is easier than the Jon Butcher one, but we'll see if the same person gets it.
