This is a warning for everyone on ytsejam. We DO NOT want to know
everyones top five non Dream Theater favorite groups. When someone asks
this, ten thousand people resond and the mailbox gets filled up really
quick. So please don't start another trend like this.

I thought of this because a new jammer recently wrote this in the jam.

    >I'm new to the list, but I have an idea for a new topic string:

I'll remind you all. DO NOT START THIS TREND AGAIN!!!

To the one who said that the harmonies on ACOS ["innocence caressing
me" and "ignorance (something) (something)"] blew them away...

I'll agree, they are pretty good. And the first time that I heard
the studio ACOS I thought, "cool harmonies." But the fact of the
matter is, they really lack in harmonies overall. They do them few
and far between, and even those aren't outrageously amazing (not that
they have to be for me like 'em, mind you).

This is just my opinion, and you can flame me, but remember, it is
only my opinion...DT's harmonies (even ACOS') aren't even in the same
ballclub as those of King's X, Galactic Cowboys, echolyn, Queen, or
even Extreme (Nuno puts down some great complements to Gary's
    voice)...

    Peace,

    Lars,

Holy posts batman! I didn't see the Fates video on MuchMusic, but I
think Teresa is out to lunch. Through Different Eyes is from Perfect
Symmetry which is not exactly new!

I don't think DT should go overboard on the harmonies since they can't
(or don't) do it live. To vocalists that'd be like leaving out a guitar
solo (to guitarists). I'd prefer JP lose the 7-string so that I can play
along with the tunes! I haven't liked JM's sound at all except for some
live stuff I've heard (not LatM).

Being the conscientious student that I am, I went to the University library
today. I got a book on Scottish History, and found the logo used by Mary
Queen of Scots which is allegedly the basis for Dream Theater's 'M' symbol.

Yup, there is definitely a resemblance there!

an addition to my earlier comment:

After just listening to "Voices," I came across my favorite harmony
    vocal done by DT...

"...see my diary on the newsstand, seems we've lost the truth to
quicksand, it's a shame no one is prayin', cause these voices in my
    head keep sayin'..."

That is *my* fav harmony part by DT, but it kinda supports my earlier
comment. They are lacking in harmony vocals. The part from "Voices"
above is all done by LaBrie. How are they gonna do that in concert?
The harmonies on TSM are by the producer. JP is supposedly doing
them on tour, but why couldn't he do them in the studio? Don't
flame, as I see this as positive criticism. This is one area that
they need to work on...though they aren't horrendous.

BTW, I think that JLaB's "breathing" in the songs are there for a
reason. I was listening to 6:00 a bit ago and the part that goes
"the pain inside, coming outside" James takes a big breath. I feel
that it adds meaning to the lines...

I'm sure I wont be the only one to write this, but to the inventive
chap on the list who decided that it would be a good idea to list our
vavorite bands, we went through all that over a month ago. Still, it was
a good try, and I hope no one flames you for it.

Secondly, I just want to add my point about the Lyrics thing. In
regard to James LaBrie, I think he is a great singer, but sometimes he does
go over the top and his vocals tend to dominate the song. "Voices" Is my
prime example of this. In songs like "Learning to live" or "Take the
time", I feel the balance is just right. In fact, I feel that on "Awake"
the vocals dominate far too much when they appear. "Dont tell me you
wanted me, dont tell me you thought of me...." However I would like to
make the point that I feel he is infinately better than Charlie.

How does anyone think Bruce Dickenson (ex Iron Maiden singer) would
sound as fron man, I often think that James and Him sound similar in
    parts.

    Hey all,

Yesterday I picked up the current Guitar Player, which contained the resutls
of their annual readers poll. I could only skim it (the store owner had one of
those "if you wanna read it, buy it" looks), and noticed only one DT reference:
_Awake_ was tied for third in the metal album category (with what I don't
remember). No individual accolades for the Johns. For the record, Clapton
won best overall. If anybody is a GP reader (gotta be at leastone), maybe
    they could elaborate.

About this whole debate on James and his voice. I have absolutely no idea
what kind of guy he is, so I won't even go there. As for his voice, well
it all depends. Sometimes it really does something for me, and other times
he just sounds like your typical metal screamer (no insult intended, I come
from the prog side of prog-metal). I've always kind of hoped his voice will
settle down, kind of like Geddy Lee's did.

One more thing, I don't like the idea of DT as a 6 piece (mcnugget?). One of
the things I've always liked about the traditional prog setup is that one guy
(or girl) is responsible for one instrument. I kind of like it that way.
If JP is soling, then Derek can lay down some chords, and vice versa.

    Just my $.02

My God, this post I actually worked in some DT content!

Now waiting for the new album is really gonna kill me. Damn, I didn't get

    Hey Jammers,

This past weekend I was watching a stupid USA Up All Night movie and I'd swear that the guitarist in the band was James. The band was called SHOCKRA (sp?). It probably was a fictitious band in the movie and it was called "Fraternity Demon". Really stupid movie but I'd swear it was him. The credits didn't give the band members names so I really have no clue. Anyone have any insight???

Here's the deal. I have 1 ticket to the Malibu show and 1 ticket to the Birch Hill show that I need to sell. I'm not looking to make any money or anything, so I'll sell them for $15.00 each, with the extra $2.50 accounting for part of the service charge and handling fee and all that junk I had to pay for. So if you need a ticket to either or both shows, let me know (bda109@psu.edu). I'll sell them to whomever replies first I guess. In review: 1 ticket to the Malibu show $15.00 1 ticket to the Birch Hill show $15.00 First come, first serve.

p.s. My friend had to cancel, same friend who decided he couldn't afford to go to the first Ytsecon. I haven't let him live it down yet. I think it cost me about $40 for the weekend.

There has been discussion about vocal harmonies and about using a second guitar player to help fill in the stage sound. Well, I had an idea while making tapes to play at work. Why doesn't the band call up Trevor Rabin? He would be a fine sixth member. He can play guitar, write, and SING!!! His lead vocals are good enough but his harmonies would be more than enough reason to recruit him into Dream Theater. I am NOT saying that James should go, not by any means. To have Rabin on stage singing the harmonies that no one else will, as well as shadowing Petrucci on rhythm guitar, it should make for a very FULL show. Getting back to making tapes...I have to listen to a classic rock radio station. I have no choice. Someone else controls the thing and I hate that. However, a cassette deck was recently purchased. Now I can make tapes of music that you don't hear everyday. Take Dream Theater, as a good example. After listening to Boston, BTO, Bob Seger, the latest Aerosmith ballad, the latest Van Halen ballad and The Breeze by Lynyrd Skynyrd, even (dare I say it publicly) country starts to sound good. If you are in the Cleveland or Akron Ohio area, you already know what station I am talking about. I put together some tapes containing EARLY Genesis with P. Gabriel and S. Hackett still in the band. I mixed it up with a little live DT and then some live Genesis then some more DT from Acoustic Dreams. I got rave reviews for the first tape. Now all I have to do is make about 5 more tapes. Shouldn't be hard to do, considering I have about 7 DT disc currently and almost all of the Genesis remasters. If you have any suggestions as to what else might sound better than classic rock, feel free to let me know. Talk to all of you later, George.

It was pretty funny, I must say :-)> Please, to the people just subscribing to the list, don't even think about doing this, for it has been done before, and it wasn't pretty. Bye. I think Deep Purple might do a nice version of that DT classic, "Perfect Strangers".

To tell you the truth, when James made the foreign jokes, I really think he was joking with the audience. I mean, when you have guys screaming at you in Italian, what are you supposed to do? So gHe made a joke. I really don't think anyone made a big deal about it. I don't see anything wrong with it. I don't think it's an attack on foreigner audiences. My opinion, but still, ...

He does overdo it, that was my point. And there is no need to hear him inhaling in preparation to sing the next phrase - its been done (eg Steve Miller), its stupid.

Sounds like you just don't like blues. The riff at the beginning of Scarred is a very bluesy riff. I like the classical scales and arpeggios as much as the next guy, but if you never branch out, It'll get boring. Steve Morse is an example of this IMO - his two latest albums, "Structural Damage" and "Full Circle" have NOTHING new to offer from his previous music. The songs on Structural damage even reuse all sorts of material from "Southern Steel" and "Coast to Coast". If JP and DT don't stretch themselves, there won't be much point to getting more of their albums - just more of the same. But I have no worries cause I'm pretty sure they intend to stretch.

You are probably right, but I worry nonetheless. One thing I don't worry about is that they'd attain some success and then abandon their true music. If anything, the "real" musicians tend to go in the opposite direction - they get really weird and "out there".

For a while, didn't Van halen have a rhythm guitarist on tour? I saw a video where Sammy played guitar on some songs. It kind of threw me a llittle bit. It almost seemed very ... non-Halen.

Damn your blasphemous (spelling?) soul. Are you a guitarist? You know how many guitarist's i've encountered that feel the same as you? I myself am a keyboardist and reject any statements that indicate that keyboards are unnecessary in a rock band, especially prog rock. _Awake_ was a great album, but it didn't come close to _Images and Words_. Try and picture ACOS without any keys, i can't. I can't think of a single progressive rock song that i like that doesn't include keyboards. Keyboardists can do alot that guitarists can't, and vice versa. You can't get the same 'sonic feeling' without the use of a synth. (i.e. the intro to ACOS). And synths don't have the same human feel that guitars have. An equal balance of the two, in conjunction with a monster bassist and drummer makes for a perfect musical situation. (i.e. Dream Theater)

Personally I like Kevin Moore's playing better, but I really haven't heard enough of Derek's playing or writing, etc. to make a fair judgement yet. Dream Theater IS quite possibly the most gifted band of all time, and no changes should be made to their current setup.

Wow. Hope i didn't come off to strong. It just irritates me when people slam keyboardists. And yes, I do take the statement above as an insult.

As for the new album, i don't want to speculate. I want to be surprised. I want to be dazzled. I want to be reminded (yeah, like i need to be) of why DT is one of my favorite bands. IF YOU GUYS ARE READING THIS.... KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK!! (and play in Iowa more often)

    Later.

Andy, the humble keyboardist trying to survive in a world dominated by grunge and ignorance. (the two kinda go hand in hand, don't you think???)

    Hey, Zach.

Keyboards are unnecessary? what narrow minded attitude is that? I bet all the keyboardists on this list are lining up to flame you right now. So let me be one of them. Keyboards are great. They can take guitars in diverse sounds. There are so many different applications for keyboards that it's scary. Guitars don't have the same diversity in sound, IMHO. And keyboards can take the place of entire bands. Can guitars? No. Drums? No. Bass? No. Vocals. Maybe if you went back to barbershop quartets. Sorry, but I can replace all of you with my keyboard rig. And make it sound like a band. What do you have to say to that?

I think people hate James's voice because he is too eighties at times. Not that I am compolaining. People don't like eighties music anymore because it's very meelodic. Some will say that melodic music is cheesy. Which is the reason why most eighties music is disliked by trendy people. Just because James likes to write more melodic vocal lines and doesn't sing horribly doesn't mean he sucks. But people like to knock what they don't understand and progressive rock is the big misunderstood music form around.
