Heeey, I got an idear. How about we start a thread on
telling people not to post their top 5 favorite bands to
    the list. Oops! Too late.

Okay, here's the deal. I need five or six people to help me out. I'm
doing a paper on etiquette, and language on the internet, and I need to be
flamed. Here's what I want to do. Originally I was going to post a
henious statement on the Jam with my roommate's account, but rather than
polluting the jam with a hugh debate, have a boring thread, and on top of
that, having my roommate get private death threats, without my teacher
knowing I'm going to stage the whole thing. So I need 5 or 6 ONLY. Email
    privately and I'll brief you.

For the rest of the jammers - just so you're forwarned, I'm going to tell
you what I'm going to say in the message. I'm going to talk about how the
members of Dream Theater should experiment with crack to improve their
creativity, and how crack really opens your mind (which is downright
stupid). So now you're warned. Please, please, PLEASE don't be pissed
when you see this message on an upcoming jam. And if you haven't heard
form me before the message appears, DON'T flame and pollute the jam. JUST
LET THE FIVE OR SIX PEOPLE DO IT!!!!!!

    Thank you very, very much!

    3.)How do I get a ytsejam t-shirt?

4.)Whats this about a cover of Damage Inc? I haven't heard anything.

You know, I'm really pissed. DT's my fave band, and I would do almost
anything to see them. Unfortunately, I'm almost 16. That means I can't see
them at Malibu! It really sucks because I live a couple of hours away from
the club, and I'm staying with relatives who are a matter of minutes from the
club for Christmas, one of whom is going. I have vowed to find a way to get
in, and the 28th of December is drawing closer. And I'm not the only one!
I've got friends who want to go, and I'm sure there are many under 18 jammers
who want in. To anyone who can get me in, HELP!!! I know people are printing
the jam for Mike Portnoy. To Mike, HELP!!!, and aren't you guys ever going to
do an all ages show in the NY area? A guy that works at the Malibu said I can
go see them when the play the Nassau Colisium very soon, but I'm sure thats
all bull shit. I'm not asking for a free ride. I'll pay for my ticket and can
get to and from the show, I just want to get in!!!!!!!!!

Let's not forget that James was trained as an opera singer; in light
of this, his style makes sense. Anyone who caps on his voice is an
idiot, present company excepted of course.

    > little jazz and being a jazz player. Same with any style.

    Ahem, three of them are.

Might I remind you that Dream Theater is comprised of three men from
Berklee? Ever since I heard of their origins, I have always considered DT
a group of jazz musicians who decided to play metal. Jazz would seem to be
as much a part of their musical roots as Iron Maiden. Of course I could be
wrong, maybe they've left all that stuff behind or have forgotten their
jazz-theory, but anyone who wonders whether DT could play jazz or not
probably also wonders if congress has the power to impeach the president.
Sure they do, but they rarely bare such fangs.

    Album #4... Hmmm...

I'd like Myung to get a forward sound. Try fiddling with the knobs in the
studio for one song so that the bass is actually in the front and the
guitar is in the back. Yes, that sounds somewhat perpendicular to how
heavy music has been recorded for the last few decades, but I think it
would be neat. Just ask Les Claypool. It can work.

Speaking of knob-fiddling, allow Labrie's voice to be served a
reverb-feast one some songs, and none at all on others. It adds beef to
his voice occasionally, but the first verse of "6:00" or "Scarred" would
be a lot clearer without the intense reverb. There was less of that on
I&W, and the vocals were much clearer. Of course, in the higher range it
doesn't make much difference because James has the power to wail, but on
the softer, lower notes I'd like to see someone turn up the vocal-volume
instead of the vocal-reverb. Yeah, yeah, tune my ear...

As far as a song in particular, I'd love to hear a real thumper like
"Caught In A Web." That's the only song DT has that doesn't stop for five
    full minutes.

Or, maybe the keyboards could somehow be programmed to produce a sound
other than the trademark organ that I've heard keyboardists using for
years. Technics has some great stuff like "violin," "piano," and "oboe,"
which are actual instruments in real life, but can be re-created so their
sound can be utilized through a keyboard. Not that I hate that Hammond
organ sound, it's just that if my guitar could be made to sound exactly
like a cello, chances are you'd hear that cello on one of my albums.

I'd like to hear Mike Portnoy do an entire song with brushes, using only
his bass drum, snare, and hi-hat. Petrucci would turn his volume-knob down
to "one," and fingerpick only. Myung would not slap any of his strings.
Sherinian would use a piano sound. LaBrie would sing some of the lower
notes of his range. There's a particular style of music that is the
epitome of what I have just described, but there seems to be a consensus
that this is not what people want to hear from DT. But I would.

As far as production goes, Duane Baron and John Purdell are a must. I
can't think of any other producers that give bands such space to breathe.
An all-out power sound could come from Richie Zito or David Prater, but
otherwise I think they should stick with DB & JP. But besides all of that,
each member of DT has matured in their sounds, as they've all been doing
this stuff for years, so I think regardless of producer the members of DT
will each (1) be picking their own studio sounds, and (2) have a certain
amount of input as to how the album sounds overall. (Which means they
should stick with DB & JP. :) )

Meekly put, I would like to hear Myung play the violin. I've never heard
anything about whether or not he did some of the strings on "The Silent
Man," but I'd like to hear him be a bit capricious with the bowed
instrument. (pun intended, first person to figure it out gets a free
    endorsement in my next post)

I'd like to hear LaBrie layer some minor harmonies. In fact, I'd like to
hear the entire band do a minor song. And I don't mean minor like a
classical piece with a dark mood, I mean minor like morbid with a capital
M...which would be "Morbid." (I would have said "Moorebid," but he's not
    in the band anymore...)

Now what about shifting gears to the world of upbeat, jazzy paces? I'd
like to hear a stuttering kickdrum pattern, something along the lines of
Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher," or, if Portnoy's up to it, Pantera's
"Becoming." On Awake, DT proved (to me at least) they could chug like a
frieght train. But can they groove in one of those quicker tempos?
    Ting-ti-ting, ting-ti-ting said the cymbal! Ba-dup-ba-DAH-ba-dup-ba-DAH
said the kickdrum! Can DT get down and jam like the funkiest of the p-funk
    all-stars???

    A sixth member... Hmmm...

I have always thought that DT could use a sixth person live, one capable
of playing rhythm guitar and singing LaBrie's range. So, so, so many songs
would take on a new live dimension if Petrucci had rhythm guitar under his
solos, and no I don't think the keys take the place of the rhythm guitar.
This would also open the door for twin-guitar rhythms for the chunky
layering they did on Awake, a la "Caught In A Web."

This rhythm guitarist would also sing harmonies with LaBrie on the songs
with integral vocal parts. By "integral," I mean songs that really lose
something vocally when done with only one voice. Imagine the boost a
second voice would give to stuff like "Caught," "Innocence Faded," and
"Lifting Shadows." Of course, if the Johns were to sing at all, the four
voices total could accomplish a four-part mini-choir for the "Pull Me
Under" chorus or the ACOS LaBrie Choir, "innocence caressing me" etc.

As for the "Take The Time" verses, The Wind came blasting through and
enlightened me. I will post what it said at a later date. Some of its
    wisdom really suprised me...

I disagree if you are serious. I heard the keyboard instrumental jam that
they created as an intro to the mirror for the japan tour and i have to say
that it is very impressive. And the keyboard jam in the middle of TTT?
well, that's my favorite part. anyway. I think derek will fit in well

To the person who wanted some Progressive Christmas songs...

King Crimson just released a single for their song "Sex Sleep Eat Drink
Dream" that has a live version of Silent Night... I think its that. I'm
not sure. It has a Christmas song on it anyway. And also Keith Emerson of
ELP released a Christmas album a while back. And then you can't discount
    Mannheim Steamroller's 3 Christmas albums. They're semi-prog at least.
They had a few full fledged prog albums.

Also, by the way, just wanted to let everyone know that Savatage's new
album is really a peice of art. I was much more impressed by this than
    Handful of Tears.

One thing I liked about erotomania, is that I found the intro chords
very annoying. very annoying indeed! It grabbed my attention and took
me quite a few listens to get sort of used to, I'm still not used to them.
I think they should do something like that on their next album. I don't
want them to become complacent and only write things that sound good together,
but also things that grab your attention by just being damned annoying.

Of course I want the bass louder to, or to have a more distinctive
tone. It really is hidden in most of the songs. I want it to reach out
and smack me in the face, leave me bruised for a couple days.

I also hope Derek's synthesizer sound on the next album sounds
less like deep purple. I never liked that synthesizer sound, and it has
no edge. Something more like the synthesizer at the beginning of Voices.

    Anyway, I'll write again latter

No! Wrong! Very very wrong! That video came out when "Perfect Symmetry"
was first released way back in--what was it, '89?

As for Fates getting heavier, I'm not sure about that, but I have heard
that Jim Matheos just finished writing the new album, and it's one
continuous 50+ minute epic song! I guess he's being very tight-lipped
about the overall sound and direction he's taken, though, so we'll just
have to wait and see (or I'll let you know if I hear any more ;) ).

    And you're complaining?!?

I had to dig my car out of over a foot of snow TWICE before I could go
home for Thanksgiving break two weeks ago!!

Count your blessings that you live in Whatever-town-you're-in, NY rather
than in Ithaca like I am!!

BTW, it snowed here again this morning, too.

Can anybody email with your impressions of the following groups:

Queensryche (Operation Mindcrime, etc.) -- I know, I guess I'm the
only one in the US who hasn't heard them. I have heard Silent
Lucidity, but I guess that doesn't count.

    Saga (Generation 13, etc.)

What do they sound like? Like DT? Anybody know where I can get
a copy of Saga's albums? How about Magellan's first album for that
matter? Any other recomendations would be appreciated. Please email
so the Jam is not full of replies to NDTC :) Thanks for any info!!

Oh sure, that would be great. Then you would have the exact same thing
that happened with Van Halen. You would get fans that only like David or
Sammy and then start bashing one another, fighting back and forth like kids
    over who is better.

You close minded fool. So untrue. There are some good rock bands that
include keys and it just adds so much more i.e. DT, Van Halen, Rush, Journey
for starters. Even Pearl Jam and Extreme do it on occasion. And Awake is
a great disk with the keys. It would be lacking without it. And for every
other band, I think more bands should have key players. It adds more spice.
If you are not into it then, you should check out other bands like Pantera
or Megadeth where you won't find that. But DT is great with Derek or Kevin.\

Re: "Zach" who stated DT didn't need keyboards:

What??? Dream Theater needs MORE keyboards. Without them, they'd just be
another VH rippof with better than average songwriting skills. No, it is
the layers and textures that the keys add to DT's songs which make them
    stick out from the crowd.

I find rock that doesn't have any keys to be ... well simply, quite
boring. Even when they have some keys in the song its boring. Case in
fact: Listen to the Led Zep covers on ACoS. Yeah, they're good songs but
after a few listens you just get bored with them.

Moreover, DT is a progressive metal band, not just a "rock" band as you
state. Almost all, if not all prog bands have either one or two (or
sometimes as many as 4 keyboard players.) DT has too few key solos
currently, and they need more "lush" sounds and also Derek needs to use
that great hammon organ patch he has to counter-balance the lush synths.
DT really needs to get some analog keys, maybe even a mellotron. that
    would be so cool. :)

Here's a rockin christmas song for you: "Another Sunny Christmas," by
    Golgotha.

There's also "Legal Kill" by King's X ... just for the outro.

    The answer to the following:

Cruel and inhuman punishments are being carefully described in tiny
paragraphs so they won't conflict with the Constitution...etc etc

is "Central Scrutinizer" by Frank Zappa. If you have to load or unload,
go to the WHITE ZONE....you'll love it...it's a way of life.

Here's a rough one (and be glad I didn't use some of the Latin lyrics
    this band has used):

"What motive is behind your impulse?
What motive is behind your impulse?
    The desire to
    Reach outward."

Oh, and I think the Cure should cover "Space Dye Vest."

    Hello Jammers,

Several people commented in a recent jam about the make-up of
bands. I think that a second guitarist can add quite a bit to a band
only if the following is true:

    1. The guitarist is good enough to play lead as well as rhythm.

I can't see the point of a guitarist who just plays chords behind a
lead guitarist, it can give the music a fuller sound, but why add more
personel, have the bass player do some of this or a keyboardist, or if
you have a vocalist who just sings, let them strap on the guitar and play
a few simple chords. If the guitarist can play lead you can have
interlocking guitar parts (Fate's Warning & Inferno do this well) or they
    can switch-off.

    2. The guitarist plays experimental guitar.

I am thinking of King Crimson, Frank Zappa, and the like with this
comment. If your second guitarist is playing MIDI guitar, using an
alternate tuning, or using distortion then they are adding something
different to the music and are making a good contribution.

I really don't think DT needs another guitarist.

    The new album
    -------------
I'm not really looking for something totally experimental from Dream
Theater, I too would like to hear a song penned by Derek, at least one
epic track, and I think that Portnoy or somebody should add a 2nd part
harmony on some parts live. This works really well for Marillion with
Pete (bass guitar) doing backing vocals and Mark Kelly (keyboards) doing
a third part during sections of Brave. Portnoy could sing second part,
and Petrucci could sing third part. One can dream...

    Later,

    Mike

            Hmmmm....
I think Extreme would do a rockin' Silent Man. Nuno ROCKS on acoustics
(well, Nuno rocks on anything!!), and he likes those violin parts (ie:
Who Cares off III Sides to Every Story).Metallica (among MANY other
bands) could do an AWESOME Lie (imagine the fun Hetfield and Hammet would
have with those high-pitched keyboard notes!). It'd be kinda cool if Spiro
Gyra did a version of Another Day (Beckenstein knows his part already!).
I'd like to hear Elton John or BIlly Joel or some other piano guy cover
    Space-Dye Vest.

To add to the thread about what tunes DT should cover: How 'bout
Tragic Comic by Extreme? That baseline RULES, and I'd love to hear
Portnoy add to the drum part. Or how 'bout Cryin' by Joe Satriani? Has
    keyboards & everything.

            ***Warning: NDTC***
Has anyone else noticed how popular Satch's music is for
background music in commercials? There was a commercial around here for
Dairyland Greyhound Park that used Satch Boogie. I've heard "The
Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing" and "Hill of the Skull" used for
monster truck commercials on the radio. And, of course, there's the
infamous Sony commercial that used "Summer Song." Has anyone else noticed
    this? Anyone?

    Hey guys,

I'm starting to get a little pissed off about some of the the
responses to my James LaBrie/Devon Townshend thread. Here's one...

"If people are turned off by LaBrie because he sounds too 80's, then I guess
they'd prefer some lame-ass grudge "singer" who has little/no talent. And I'm
sure you can find lots of people who could match LaBrie's singing... not."

Uhh...did I bring up grunge? Do I even listen to grunge? Did I say people
were turned off because he sounds too 80's? Like you so eloquently said,
    "NOT!"

    Here's another reponse...

"It really seems like you're saying that DT should get rid of James because
he's not accessable enough to a lot of people...Who brought this up anyway?
Who would dare state, nay, *think* such a thing?"
                                               ^^^^^^
Oops! I guess I missed the free thought ban on the jam. Lighten up! I said
I still think James is great, and I generally like him in DT. Just because
James is an excellent singer doesn't mean I should be forbidden from making
*small* stylistic criticisms. Many don't like Luciano Pavarotti
stylistically, but many of those same people would admit he's a great
singer. I really like James, but what if I hated his singing? What if I
loved everything about DT except that? Would I be forbidden from the jam?
Would I still be allowed to like DT? I've always liked the exchange of
different ideas on the jam. Let's not stifle that now!
Let's all grow up and not flame each other for stupid reasons.
We're all on the Jam because we love DT. Let's remember that.

E-mail me personally if you want to discuss this, but let's move on now and
not waste space on the jam. Later guys!

    -Mike Bradley
