                           Under a Glass Moon

    "Damn!", said the doctor.
My eyes widened and my body tensed. "What happened??" I asked.
"Well", said the doctor,"...um...I...um....okay, I used the wrong
anesthesia. I used the big time kind. The kind that puts you out for a
    day. That's the good news."
"The GOOD NEWS? You call that GOOD?? Well, what can be WORSE?"
"The bad news could....you're allergic to that kind."
            That's when time disappeared.

                    * * *

I found myself in a storm of swirling colors. The only thing that
remained constant was the glass moon-like object in the sky. I stared at it
for a moment, then shrugged and walked nonchalantly down the stairs that
unfolded before me. All of the sudden, I was flying through a dark tunnel
with strobe like lights flashing on and off. Search lights swept across the
ground all around me. Run! I had to run before they caught me. But, WHY
were they chasing me? I didn't know, but I knew I couldn't let it happen,
so I went in the door. The Glassmoon was back, but now it was a pretty
summer landscape. And a man walked by bearing an honorinmyname. I thought
that was neat. Whoosh....back into the color storm. Only this time, it was
more controlled and a few patterns were recognized. One color stood out and
flew in fancier patterns than the others. Now, a different color led and
    the rest pulsed together. Unity.....
Now it swirled with more ferocity than ever...DOWN!
            The glass moon was back......
            * * *
I woke with a start. The nurse hollered to the doctor saying
something about how that guy was Awake. I shrugged and ate my green jello.

                            Author's Note

Heehee. No plot, no sense, no nothing.
That's what I think of when I listen to Under a Glass Moon. What I
wrote is what I "see" when I listen to it. Minus the hospital part. I just
wanted to stick green jello in there somehow. It was just one of those
nights where I felt like writing. So SUE me! I would like to see stories
by other people, though, so SEND 'EM IN BEFORE I GET MAD! :-) Juuuuuust
    kiddin.

...or don't put me off beat!

i heard the symphonic pink floyd album over the break, and it smokes!!
nothing like the yes symphonic album (which was pathetic, btw). this album
actually recreates and even adds stuff to the floyd songs. what a different
way to hear floyd! check it out.

i am soon obtaining a score to the entire karn evil 9 (by elp). my plan is to
perform "brain salad surgery" in its entirety sometime(s) in 1998, which is
the 25th anniversary of its release. any musicians in the ny area who may be
interested in adding their name to a tentative list for a tentative band can
    email me.

    ok, some dt content:

my wfs score project will be delayed til december at the earliest. i don't
have my midi gear hooked up with me, and i heard what i did. and i have some
bugs to fix up. i will wait til i go home to my stuff to fix it up. i don't
even know what's up with it. the notes are very close to exact (except for
some errors i will correct when i go home), but the computer program i use
goes nuts with my tempo and meter notations. alas. i will notify when it's
    ready to any interested parties.

i guess that's it for now. happy tortilla findling to all.

    Get "BRING 'EM BACK ALIVE!"
    It's an INCREDIBLE CD!
    It's a great line up -
Morse, LaRue, Morgenstein, Lavitz & Sloan...
the recording quality is top notch, and the
performances should adequately floor you. =)

Yeah, it's live. The only ways you'd know it are:

    1) I just said it
    2) The CD says it somewhere
    3) The audience noises
    4) There's a "drum solo" on it - it's actually not JUST
Morgenstein flailing away on the drums, either.
But, you'll have to go buy it to see what I mean. =)

And, yes, it does have Cruise Control on it.

    Just get it, already!

It's on Capricorn Records, should you have to special
    order it.

    **Steffen Barabasch writes, regarding AD:**

    >Hairball on vocals... did you really HAVE to list this fake band
    >for legal reasons?

Well, he couldn't list that it was actually Dream Theater, so, thus,
the fake band...still, I have to say this: I had NO idea Mike was
going to do that - use my name, that is. People around work got
a kick out of it. =)

And while I do find the fade-ins kind of annoying, I'm sure there
was a reason for them being there. As for the slowness of them,
it's kind of hard to do quick fade ins, accurately, by hand.

    **WarrenDW@aol.com writes:**

    >OK Hairball...I know you have played with DT before (see

    >get the hidden messages??

No, but, if you're really bored, send me a blank reel-to-reel 1/4"
tape, and a few blank cassettes. What I'll do is tape each CD
onto a reel, then, flip it over, let it run backwards, and make a
cassette of it for you...and you can listen for them for the rest
    of us. ;)

    DREAM THEATER
    SUBCONSCIOUS

      1. Eve (5:21)
Recorded live at the Limelight, New York City on March 4,
1993. This is the only time known of (that has been recorded)
where Kevin Moore played the samples from James Joyce's
Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man in concert.

      2. A Change of Seasons (19:19)
This was also recorded at the New York City Limelight show on
March 4, 1993 -- one of the few times it has been played live
with LaBrie on vocals. This 20 minute epic is slated for
      release later this year.

      3. O Holy Night (4:10)
This is one of the demos done with ex-frontman Charlie Domi
nici at the helm. This song was a part of a few live shows
during the Images and Words "Music In Progress" tour, and a
version featuring LaBrie is expected to be released in the
      future.

      4. Carry That Weight/Golden Slumbers (6:13)
A demo of a Beatles song, recorded in 1988 with Charlie Domi
nici on vocals. I suspect they were drunk when they did this
one, because there was some drunken chatter before it that I
      had to cut out.

      5. Don't Look Past Me (6:21)
This is one of the original Majesty demos, and in this
instance, would-be vocalist John Hendricks is singing it. It's
really quite a good song, and Petrucci works part of the end
melody around to make an excellent instrumental ending
reminiscent of what appeared later on the Awake track,
      "Innocence Faded."

      6. Wanted: Dead or Alive (5:08)
Originally John Petrucci did the instrumental track of this Bon
Jovi cover tune for one of his guitar students, and left the
tape sitting around. Ex-keyboardist Kevin Moore stole it, and
his roommate Rich Kern (also featured on the Kevin Moore demos)
decided to make it a bit spicier, and is the "other" voice
      heard in the background.

      7. To Live Forever (acoustic) (4:54)
This track was originally recorded as one of the four songs for
James LaBrie's vocal audition. The others were; Take The Time,
Metropolis, and Under A Glass Moon.

      8. The Gorilla Session (excerpts) (2:59)
A home-recorded solo session by Petrucci. At this early
juncture in his career, John has really little songwriting
ability and consequently this track wanders quite a lot.

      9. Mission: Impossible Theme (1:17)
This song also made it into the live set occasionally on the
"Music In Progress" Tour. Z-Rock uses this studio outtake on
      the air sometimes.

      10. The Back Pain Jam (5:07)
When Mike Portnoy's back went out at the 10/25/94 show in
Toronto, Canada, Derek Sherinian and John Petrucci banged out
this rare, never again played jam while Mike sat backstage with
      a chiropractor.

      11. The Awake Heavy Jam (3:51)
This rare instrumental was played between "The Ones Who Help
To Set The Sun" and "Innocence Faded" -- before they left the
      setlist on the "Awake" tour.

      12. Experimental (1:23)
Once thought to be another solo Petrucci instrumental, possibly
of him warming up before a show, this song was actually written
and performed by John Myung. It's source, or why he wrote it,
remains even now shrouded in mystery.

      13. Tears (3:09)
This is a Rush cover song, recorded live at the famous "Uncov
ered" concert at Ronnie Scotts in London, England on January
      31, 1995

      14. Winter (2:23)
A Tori Amos cover, also played live at the January 31, 1995
      Ronnie Scotts' "Uncovered" gig.

      15. Mystery track

      Compiled and Produced by
Mike Bahr, garion@indirect.com (NOTE: now durnik@indirect.com)

    Hi all,

I got in a video copy of the Awake in Japan video. It was recorded Live at
Urawa City Hall in Saitama, Japan. It's Pro Shot and in STEREO. Total running
time is :120, which includes about :10 of backstage footage. I don't know for
sure, but I think my copy is directly from the master. Also, I have two
4-head HIFI STEREO vcr's here at the house, so you copy will be in STEREO too
(if you have a stereo vcr, that is). If interested, the cost is $7 in the
U.S. and canada, and $10 the rest of the world per tape. Please send either
cash or money order in U.S. funds only. Any questions, please email me
    privately

Okay, here are my opinions about one of the greatest bands in the world...

Best JP solo? The solo in Take the time, the best bits during the fade out....

Kev's best is (my humble opinion) the solo in teh beginning of The ones who
help to set the sun. It's absolutely stunning......

I think the best album just listening to the songs is WDADU, definetly....
It's also the one with the worst production... Oh well you can't have it all
    I suppose

The best album production wise is Awake, where the drums really crush me,
and whereas the stereo picture on IAW was really sterile and lacked depth
(Well, the sound were good, though), the stero picture on Awake really
convinced me that it was the right thing to do to switch the producers...
althogh I think that JP's tone is a bit on the grungier side (negative
    statement)...

Okay, now that I have said the G word, let me say whatever JP says about
"playing guitar with an attitude" I think that this grunge/punk/whatever
wave is a threat to the bands that actually can play their instruments.. I
playin aprogressive outfit in a musical scene in Sweden where (I think) all
the other bands play punk or just play Irish folkrocksomething. And whereas
we can play our instruments we are considered bad musicians because we play
music that they don't understand, and it's not that progressive...

Oh well, got to go to class....

Just a couple of quick thoughts as to the new album. Yeah, I'd definitely
like to see a couple songs written by Derek, but I'd also like to see some
more written by JM. His lyrical contributions have been rather few and far
between but I love what he has done, namely LTL and LSoaD. He should
definitely do more lyrics. As to a Metropolis Pt. 2, I don't know. I've
never been too impressed by sequels. Of course, this *is* DT we're talking
about, but still, Part 1 is going to be hard to top. Here's a wacky idea:
maybe they could rework the original, kinda like they did with ACOS, and
then blend it together with part 2 in the vein of AMBI, thus producing a
25 minute epic simply known as Metropolis. Hmm, maybe. Speaking of ACOS,
do any of you Jammers out there know where I can get a dubbed copy of the
Mercy Fuck version? I'm pretty sure they recorded this so there's gotta be
something floating around out there. Hey, I heard that
they will be playing ACOS at the Malibu, but does this mean that they
won't be doing it at say, Old Bridge, the only show I can go to? To Mike
Bahr, thanks for your inspiration. I finally got off my ass and posted.

Well, later. and oh, how's it going Bafu? Just had to say it for myself.
    Heh, heh. Cool.

As stated earlier, Bozzio is amazing and instructional videos
prove it best. But also check out "Spring Session M" by the
Missing Persons and hear what he did with 80's pop. In particular,
check out "US Drag". The fills in "Tears", "Windows" and "Words"
might not seem incredible by today's standards, but keep in mind
that this LP/CD is about 13 years old. Few had integrated complex
rhythms and fills in "pop" music during that era and during that
period, Portnoy was probably at an age where he was the most

I find this odd, because for some reason I too was wary of how he would
act off stage, I don't know why, but somehow I assumed that he wouldn't
be the picture-perfect nice guy that the rest of the guys are...

But after meeting him at a drum show in Toronto, I found him to be quite
friendly. He chatted about WDADU songs, Scarred and ACOS. After signing
a few autographs, and the 3 of us were the only ones left, I wanted to
get a few photos. The lighting was bad, and I didn't have a flash, so he
took us back up on stage, under the bright lights, and let all of us get
an individual picture with him. Then, when we should have been leaving,
as the techs were putting away the drum sets, we moved off to the side of
the stage and talked more about Fates Warning. When we got back down
from the stage, there were a few ppl waiting for autographs again, and
while he was busy signing, he turned to us as we were walking away and
    said bye.

So for any of you that don't know.. well, you do now... James is a great guy!

(Oh yeah, he checks the jams once in a while, so... Hey James!)

It is very loud at Malibu...I would suggest that you bring some sort of
earplugs if you intend to be near the stage. I got stuck right in front
of the amp at the Faith no More show and it was F*ckin' loud. Even at the
Dream Theater show last year, LaBrie's vocals are so piercing when he

Malibu is General Admission. There is no seating on the floor. There is
seating towards the back of the club, Well not exactally seating, More

ICK!! ICK ICK ICK. EWWWWWWWWWWW. Please let's not talk about that. I hate
rhythm guitar. Jeez. As if there weren't enough guitarists in the world, we
need some guy who can't take a lead stand around an play chords. I'm not
too much into QR (although I do plan to pick Operation:Mindcrime and maybe
some others because I always like their stuff, just never bought it) but I
think they're the only two guitar band that I've heard and liked a lot.
Well, Metalica but I kind consider them an exception. I mean James is the
singer and plays rhythm too because they'd lose a lot live w/o it. I much
prefer keys to a second guitarist. As for live, I don't think Rush loses
anything without rhythm guitar (unless some tech is backstage playing ;).
And bands w/keys don't need rhythm guitar because they have keys. Keyboards
rule. You can play chords in one hand and lines in the other. It's like
having two people :). Besides, remember that guitar mag with JP and JM? If
there was another guitarist, Myung wouldn't have been invited. Instead we'd
have the ever-so-enjoyable line of questions like:
Why don't you take a lead? Can you solo? Do you know the blues scale or
    just power chords?

Sorry to go off, but as a bassist, two guitar bands are just no fun. You
get even less attention and no interaction.

Why can't I agree with anyone? NO!! My biggest fear is that in an attempt
to do something fusiony it will come out as Fusak. But I don't like fusion
anyway. It always sounds so hokey. The only thing I've heard lately (past
year) that could possibly be called fusion is from a couple local (Boston)
guys. Bruce Bartlett and Jon Finn. Barlett is definitely fusion. I would
call Finn more rock-fusion or just instrumental rock. I saw Tiger (Japanese
last name something like Okoshi), a trumpet player. His band includes
Bartlett who stole the show. Tiger didn't even play all the time and I
    didn't miss him.

I like DT. They're a progressive ROCK band. I expect influences of all
kinds to enter their music but I don't expect them to do anything in a
particular genre. Jazz influence is nice. A Jazz song from DT wouldn't be.
They aren't jazz players. There's a big difference between knowing a little
jazz and being a jazz player. Same with any style.

It really seems like you're saying that DT should get rid of James because
he's not accessable enough to a lot of people. I can't go along with that.
If the other band members like James as a person and a singer then they
should keep him. Sure the singer is a front man all that and he's really
important but DT can't just change singers until they find the guy who's
    most accessable.

    Re: DT 6-piece!

    Hey Ben Laussade (sp?),
What are you saying? Marty Freidman as a "rhythm guitarist?" Are
you nutso? He's one of the best lead guitarists out in rock today.
I'm not so sure if he'd be that good of a rhythm guitarist behind
lead Petrucci. (Maybe they could trade off, and such... :)
I don't even know if they would need a rhythm guitarist...I mean,
JP seems to cover the grounds of lead and rhythm pretty well; and the
keyboardist (whether it be Kevin :'( or Derek) seems to take the
other role that JP isn't doing. DT is a whole band that work
together so nicely. JP does one thing, KM/DS does another, JM and MP
do something else; and it all the bases get covered the way that they
    want it to sound...

    Re: DT Vocals

I agree about DT's Achille's Heel being their vocals. I love WDADU,
but the vocals throw me away more often than not. I love IAW and
Awake, but sometimes I find myself angry when JLaB starts up again
after an awesome instrumental (though, I'm not *that* mad :). Many
of my friends (or acquintances) like what they hear of DT, but they
always criticize it by saying, "the vocals are too 80's metal," or
"the vocals don't really fit the music." I disagree with them many
times, but they do have valdi opinions. If anyone were to be turned
off to DT, it would be b/c they had no clue of music or they didn't
    like LaBrie's voice...
(disclaimer: I am not saying that, I love his range, etc; but some
people that I have tried to "convert" gave me excuses like those)

Another vocal thing (like Mike "FUCK YEAH" Bahr said) I see lacking
    with them is their harmony vocals. I haven't seen them live, YET;
though anytime they come within 4 or 5 hours of Dayton, Ohio, I'm
there. So, I don't know how they perform BGV's live; but I do see a
lack on the studio stuff. I mean there are some instances of
harmonies, but nothing extremely tight. Mike Bahr put it great...
maybe they should take lessons from the Galactic Cowboys (or even
    echolyn)...
