This sound is actually made by the strings hitting the fretboard at the
top fret as he plays them. It's a common effect with playing bass with
fingers (as opposed to a pick). It's very prominent on several of the DT
bootlegs I have. I find myself doing this occasionally - It's quite an
effective rythmical tool, but can sound really clanky if you've got the
treble up on the amp for some serious slapping!

happy to oblige :>
We had a large discussion on this when the album was released. The
general consensus of opinion was
"...dry until they hit the swimming pool."
It's definatly the same bloke, and the only word in doubt in my mind is
"hit", but nothing else makes reasonable sense, really.

This was answered correctly by private email. The answer is Saga,
"Generation 13 (Theme #2)."
Saga's GENERATION 13 is nearly the best concept album written--it can't
match up to Operation: Mindcrime, of course. It's got great music,
great lyrics, great musicianship, and as an added bonus, is a pretty
coherent story (in contrast with most concept albums).
More, it's a concept album with a plot twist--Op: M being the only other
such plotted album I've seen, with Mary's death.

Man, you left the title in the lyrics. It's "Hit Squad" by T-Ride. An
interesting album, somewhat bending the limits of hard rock, but...
I'm getting somewhat bored with it.
Anyone wanna buy?
Oh well, it's a neat album, with some powerful grooves, but the lyrics
are awful.

Message-ID: <199511281111.AA29090@xs1.xs4all.nl>
Hi there,
This messages is to let you know I'm back, (if you care),
I used to be know as volmer@pi.net, this adres has changed to the more
cryptic 92_042@svc.fcj.hvu.nl but, I'm still the same person:
Mark Volmer from SEGUNDA.
Meet SEGUNDA:
SEGUNDA is a new symphonic metalband from holland. We've spend the last
couple of years playing all kind of covers. At the moment all we play
are DT, FW and PW songs. So, we think it's time to start and produce
some original material e.g. write our own songs.
Beeing able to play technical stuf is one thing, beeing creative in
a usefull sense is really tough and might just be what sets us appart
from REAL bands (like DT).
SO WHAT's THE USE OF THIS MESSAGE ?!
I have this weird theory.........
The Net is so big, it links up so many people.
Among the Jam's readers there must be a load of extremely creative
writers and musicians, when they would share their thoughts, the Net
could be the ultimate source of CREATIVITY !, right.....?!
What I basicly want is YOU to help me think of a concept for a demo.
In this way we could alltogether create the ultimate piece of music !
It might sound weird, but why not give it a shot ?
How are we going to coordinate this ?, well, I don't know,
I guess I'll just post the Jam with some 'Food for Thought' everyday,
hopefully you will think about it and respond to it in future Jams.
In this way you can give it your OWN direction.
I'm not planning to claim the products exclusively for our band,
hell, if there's anyone who can play it better, give it a shot !
So lets get STARTed, my first 'food for thought' is a CONCEPT for the
demo, a central theme around wich we're gonna build the rest of the
song(s). To make shure this starts out with a LiTtLe DIRECTION I'll
give you the basic, rough theme, I suggest you turn it into a real
concept.
******The basic Theme is:******
"Growing Up, coping with live, trying to make sense."
******************************
Im looking forward to your Ideas,
I'll really appreciate it,
mayby I'm just desperate......
Thanx,
Mark

hi there,

.here it goes
------
on an old thread:
The other night I saw a movie called: "The englishmen who went up
a hill and came down a mountain" with the lately hyped Hugh Grant.
My overall impression was _nice_ , no more no less.
What really stunned me for a moment was when a Priest, who refuses
to enter a Pub says something like:
"I won't go inside this DEN OF INEQUITY", anybody remember that phrase?
As the whole film takes place in Wales, i'd assume it is (or was)
a common saying over there...
(any jammers with relatives in Wales, who could check that out?)
------
And another movie related sighting:
In the end credits of "Serial Mom" (one of my favorites!),
special thanks goes out to _Roundtable Entertainment & YTSE JAMS, INC._
So who represents them and how are they related to the movie business?
------
Nice to see there at least some Zappa-fans around.
------
I'd highly recommend the cd: EVERON - FLOOD to anyone on the
list who is a little into prog-rock (and who isn't? :-)
It's very DT compatible but more on the melodic side - no heavy
jamming but more of those nice piano and keyboard parts!
Check them out!
enough for today - read you - jerry :--)

Hey all,
In response to what people would like to hear on the new DT
album... I'm sure everyone (I know I would) want to hear what
Derek brings to the table writing wise. And, what he would
use for his keyboards, too... what samples, what instruments
(I'd love to hear a jazz organ or some really "fat" 70 ish
sounds just for a change of pace.).
I'd also like to hear somthing, er, "breakthrough" from
Myung. Not that his super-fast licks on Metropolis or his
jazzy rhythm grooves is anything to sneeze at, but something
that puts his stamp. It doesn't need to be a solo a la
Cliff Burton, but I think you get the idea. Maybe a bass
intro, or even a bass solo. If I remember correctly, he
switched to a six string bass during Awake, so maybe by
now he's got that bad boy figured out.
And, if I remember the interview correctly, Petrucci stated
that his weakness was acoustic guitar. Well, Silent Man
sounded pretty good. Maybe some more acoustic stuff, with
both him and Myung. In fact, whaddya think about a little
DT Unplugged?!?!?! Or has this thread already been done?
As for any "sixth" member... well, I know that Jay Beckenstein
played on Another Day, but a horn section would sound really
cool. As for a "rhythm" guitarist, how about Vernon Reid?
Talk about experimental sounds!
So, whaddya think?

Hey jammers!
I don't think anybody has mentioned this, so here it goes. I was looking
at a Bass magazine yesterday (I believe it was Bass Player) and I noticed
that they had the results of their annual readers' poll. Well, I don't
remember exactly (anybody is welcome to check if I'm right), but Myung was
either 6th or 7th (I think the correct one is 7th), followed by my favorite
Dave LaRue. I forgot who the winner was, but the list included names like
Flea, Mike Watt, Paul McCartney (with all this Beatles talk going on...),
Jeff Ament, John Pattitucci, etc. I think John deserves a warm round of
applause -clap, clap, clap, clap... I hope he keeps it up on the next
album!
NDTC-- I got Fates Warning's "Awaken the Guardian" the other day. It's an
amazing album. All you Fates fans who haven't checked it out should really
get it. It's truly incredible.

I don't have his address on hand (I can look it up, though). Anyway, I
agree that something more needs to be done. Apparently, O:R didn't even
PHASE them. That's probably because most people who wrote in got a
message back saying the mailbox was full. I did, then I wrote to one of
the other addresses. I guess it got through. I got no response, though.
Now, the KICKER is that the SECOND part of O:R was doomed from the
beginning. On Halloween, MTV played MTV's Most Wanted JAMS. It was all
rap/R&B. I mean, it's okay for people to like that kind of music. Just
keep it the hell away from me. (Okay, kiddies, obscure reference time! <G>)
Anyway, to think that Anybody Listening would have been played on the
NORMAL MTV's Most Wanted was a hopeless fantasy, but getting on the Most
Wanted Jams would be...well...impossible. You know, as I was listening to
"Anybody Listening?" the other day, I listened closely to the lyrics
(nevermind the fact that I had already memorized most of them anyway) and
I thought to myself, "They must have had MTV in mind when they WROTE this
song." The ironic thing is that Empire was Queensryche's biggest
commercial hit so far with SIX videos (3 with decent airplay on MTV - One
of those BEING Anybody Listening). Note that "decent airplay" for a prog
band is like more than twice. The most recent prog videos with the BEST
airplay have been "Silent Lucidity" (overplayed to death, but great for
Queensryche's career), "Stick it Out" (by Rush. This failed, IMO because
it simply wasn't the best song on Counterparts. Then MTV didn't even PICK
UP "Nobody's Hero," a song ten times better than "Stick It Out.") and
"Lie" (by guess who). Queensryche also got sufficient airplay with "I Am
I" and "Bridge" (remember, sufficient for prog bands), but when
Headbanger's Ball went the way of the dodo, so did most of the metal and
pretty much all of the prog rock.
So, now to my POINT (I go off on a tangent rather easily and I use too
many parentheses). We need to ACTIVELY hound MTV. We need to not just
flood their mailbox on one day, but EVERY DAY. Ask them to pay more
attention to prog bands and metal. Metal is NOT dead. Prog is NOT dead
(this mailing list proves it). They simply no longer get the recognition
they deserve (and in prog's case, the ONLY time it ever got the attention
it deserved was when Silent Lucidity became the #2 video of the year on
MTV's Top 100 countdown. And I'm using too many parentheses again).
MTV will get the message when they realize that this is NOT a joke. We
are serious. There are plenty of bands making great music that people
aren't exposed to because they only get exposed to what MTV wants them to
hear. It's time to take a stand and FIGHT for progressive rock and metal.
And to think. This wasn't even the message I originally intended on
replying to! Oh well, when I get on a roll, there's no stopping me. <G>

Actually, ONE cover might not be that bad. I really didn't like ALL of
those covers on ACoS. In fact, when I listen to it, I just listen to ACoS
(the song), then stop the CD before the covers come on, even though I LIKE
Funeral For a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding. Still, ONE cover on an album
wouldn't be bad, but only if it's a GOOD cover and is done in the studio.
There are a few covers that I like from recent bands where I think the
new version sounds better than the old, such as Ugly Kid Joe's cover of
"Cats in the Cradle." One cover like THAT, I could handle.

You never know, though I agree with the person who noted that Derek's
background with KISS and Alice Cooper isn't exaclty the best influence.
Hopefully, Derek has decent writing skills. We KNOW he can play. Heh,
wouldn't it be funny if he wrote something that was not only as good as
anything Kevin Moore has written, but BETTER? I know, not likely, but
miracles can happen.

I think enhanced bass could work. Now, I can't imagine DT sounding as
bass-heavy as Primus, but I DO agree that Myung should step forward a
bit. Maybe have 1 or 2 bass-heavy songs with maybe a bass solo in there

Of course, that doesn't help non-bass players notice John Myung's talent.

Heavy is indeed good, but one of the things I like about Dream Theater is
their balance of heavy stuff and lighter stuff. On I&W, it was well
balanced. On Awake, they leaned towards the heavier side, but the CD
simply would not be as good without "Innocence Faded," "The Silent Man,"
"Lifting Shadows..." and "Space-Dye Vest." Maybe I'm weird, but SDV is
one of my FAVORITE songs on Awake. I love the piano music. The piano,
when played with a continuous, melodic sound, is a beautiful thing to
behold. Two of my other all-time favorite songs are "Open Arms" (Journey)
and "Someone Else?" (Queensryche). So, keep the heavy stuff, but balance
it with slow, melodic stuff as well. I like the mix.
> >Idea #4: Keep up the complexity!!! (Should we expect anything less?)
>
> definately!! and i vote no on Metropolis Pt.II
Yes, complexity is good. And a year or so ago, I might have disagreed
with you on Metropolis Part II, as Metropolis is my FAVORITE DT song. I
was eagerly awaiting part II when Awake came out and I was disappointed
that it wasn't there. But, now that I read the intereptation of
Metropolis and that the "Part 1" was meant to signify that the song is
only the beginning of something that is "eternal." This is actually made
clear in the song with the three dances of eternity, but somehow I never
saw that. I just wanted more Metropolis!

One Instrumental is good. But when you think about it, does DT NEED an
instrumental? Many of DT's songs are long because they contain long
instrumental breaks. This is Petrucci's time to REALLY shine. I think a
completely instrumental track would be redundant. Don't get me wrong. I
love Ytsejam and Eve (Eve is phenomenal and different from the musical
"breaks" in the middle of songs). Erotomania and Bombay Vindaloo are
good, but I often skip them. In fact, I voted Erotomania as my least
favorite DT song on the poll. I don't hate it, but it doesn't stick out
well in my mind. Plus, Voices and The Silent Man far outshine this intro
to A Mind Beside Itself. Voices is my FAVORITE song on Awake.
As an aside, I have NOT been exposed to WDaDU. The only songs I've heard
from it are "A Fortune in Lies," "The Killing Hand," and "Ystejam". James
is singing the first two (on LatM) and I heard Ytsejam on LiT.

Yes, I LOVE vocal harmonies. That's one of the reasons Metropolis is my
favorite song. There are layered voices that simply astound me, especially
on "As a child, I thought I could live without pain / Without sorrow"
(harmony comes in on "sorrow") and "Like a scene from memory / There's a
picture worth a thousand words" (repeat harmony on "scene from a memory"
and "thousand words"). Also, I know someone mentioned Galactic Cowboys.
Yes, they do EXCELLENT harmonies. King's X and Savatage are also pretty
good at this. King's X and Galactic Cowboys do a true harmony, however,
while DT and Savateg tend to do voice layering, but ti still works.

That's IRC speak? Well, I can't access IRC, so I don't know. Basically, I
run a local BBS and that knd of typing ususally denotes either a hacker,
a 14-year-old who wants "X-GiFs aND eLiTe FiLeS D00D," or a Frog Beaver.
Now, Frog Beavers are a different case. We type like that on occaision,
but it's not a habitual thing.

Funny. I have a sub on my BBS called Thesubwhereyoucanpostlikethis.
People started typing like that on some of the subs, so I made a sub
specifically for that style of writing. Yeah, that gets pretty hard to read.
Nuggetman's (Chicken McNuggetman? j/k, NM. No, wait! Don't throw me out
of IRC! Wait, this is the jam? Ha ha ha! Just try it, now! Um, what's
that Ken? <G>) typing style is just a bit annoying. At least his grammer,
for the most part, is clear. I'll give him that.
My, that was long.

re: next dt album (what we wanna hear):
i absolutely love the heaviness on awake. jp's 7 string is such a perfect fit
and i hope he explores that more.
polyrhythms (e.g., "mirror"). they can do more
harmonies- it's a shame that they can't do them live, but pmu, metropolis,
if, acos- all have wonderful harmonies that i wish they could do live (esp.
in metropolis, the "scenes from a memory" part)
orchestral instruments have been mentioned, and that would be cool, but as
long as it doesn't have that "lushness" to it. the "i'll hold a chord
forever" style of orchestration has gotten me wary. if you use other
instruments, have them interact more with the band. however, being that they
won't be able to replicate that live, is there a point?
bluesy stuff- no way! although this apparently may be derek's base, and some
bluesy interjections may be cool (like they do live), too much will hurt
them.
derek, get involved!!!
re: jm's bass sound
i never liked that billy sheehan sound on wdadu. i think it has matured over
the years. i'd love to hear him on a fretless!!
to frank marotta:
any relation to jerry marotta, peter gabriel's original drummer??
re: prog rock
i assume that we can mostly agree that a main ingredient of prog is the use
of odd meter, yes? i think the best prog is that which uses the odd meters in
a free-flowing way, not when it sounds forced. good examples- rush's
"hemispheres", tori's "god", dt, "ltl". i know i have heard it once before (i
forgot where) but someone from rush mentioned that they would write stuff and
say, "hmm..let's subtract a beat, or let's just add on there." i think some
of the fills in "lie", the 5/8 ones fall into this category. i'm not sure
exactly to describe what occurs in "spirit of radio", but that intro seems
way forced for me. it doesn't seem to flow. maybe i am wrong, but this is
much how i feel.
whatever. see y'all.

'Twas the Night Before Christmas (PC Sytle)*
A Christmas poem
'Twas the night before Christmas and Santa's a wreck...
How to live in a world that's politically correct?
His workers no longer would answer to "Elves".
"Vertically Challenged" they were calling themselves.
And labor conditions at the north pole
Were alleged by the union to stifle the soul.
Four reindeer had vanished, without much propriety,
Released to the wilds by the Humane Society.
And equal employment had made it quite clear
That Santa had better not use just reindeer.
So Dancer and Donner, Comet and Cupid,
Were replaced with 4 pigs, and you know that looked stupid!
The runners had been removed from his sleigh;
The ruts were termed dangerous by the E.P.A.
And people had started to call for the cops
When they heard sled noises on their roof-tops.
Second-hand smoke from his pipe had his workers quite frightened.
His fur trimmed red suit was called "Unenlightened."
And to show you the strangeness of life's ebbs and flows,
Rudolf was suing over unauthorized use of his nose
And had gone on Geraldo, in front of the nation,
Demanding millions in over-due compensation.
So, half of the reindeer were gone; and his wife,
Who suddenly said she'd enough of this life,
Joined a self-help group, packed, and left in a whiz,
Demanding from now on her title was Ms.
And as for the gifts, why, he'd ne'er had a notion
That making a choice could cause so much commotion.
Nothing of leather, nothing of fur,
Which meant nothing for him. And nothing for her.
Nothing that might be construed to pollute.
Nothing to aim. Nothing to shoot.
Nothing that clamored or made lots of noise.
Nothing for just girls. Or just for the boys.
Nothing that claimed to be gender specific.
Nothing that's warlike or non-pacific.
No candy or sweets...they were bad for the tooth.
Nothing that seemed to embellish a truth.
And fairy tales, while not yet forbidden,
Were like Ken and Barbie, better off hidden.
For they raised the hackles of those psychological
Who claimed the only good gift was one ecological.
No baseball, no football...someone could get hurt;
Besides, playing sports exposed kids to dirt.
Dolls were said to be sexist, and should be passe;
And Nintendo would rot your entire brain away.
So Santa just stood there, disheveled, perplexed;
He just could not figure out what to do next.
He tried to be merry, tried to be gay,
But you've got to be careful with that word today.
His sack was quite empty, limp to the ground;
Nothing fully acceptable was to be found.
Something special was needed, a gift that he might
Give to all without angering the left or the right.
A gift that would satisfy, with no indecision,
Each group of people, every religion;
Every ethnicity, every hue,
Everyone, everywhere...even you.
So here is that gift, it's price beyond worth...
"May you and your loved ones enjoy peace on earth."
