wow, two posts in one month....that's a new one for me......

anyway, to whoever quoted "so darn cute, a big head with one eye/girls
can't keep their hands off of him and neither can i", that would be
Scatterbrain, _Mr. Johnson and The Juice Crew_. guess that makes me a
    true lyrical gangsta....:)

and now for the moment none of you have been waiting for, here's what i'd
like to hear on the next DT album....

i originally had some misgivings about David Prater producing ACOS,
mainly because of how much better the drums sounded on _Awake_. i was
really dreading the prospect of 23 minutes of triggered drums. after i
listened to ACOS though, my concerns vanished. i absolutely love MP's
piccolo snare and would like to hear more on the next album. as far as
i'm concerned, Prater gets the nod for the new album if he can do for it
    what he did on ACOS.....

more vocal harmonies! i nearly fell off my couch the first time i heard
the harmonies on ACOS, especially in the "Innocence caressing me" and
"Ignorance surrounding me" parts. just plain blew me away and i'd like to
hear more, even if they can't really reproduce the harmonies in concert...

did i mention that i also like Derek's Hammond organ sound? i guess that
comes from listening to a lot of Deep Purple and Uriah Heap growing up.
also, anyone concerned about Derek being able to play the fluid, clean
solos a la Kevin Moore should take another listen to _The Inevitable
Summer_ section of ACOS, right after the big 'ol honkin monster riff. i
don't know if Derek actually wrote this solo or not, but he sure plays it
    like he means it.

maybe a song similar to QR's _Disconnected_ to display JM's talent. i was
listening to _Promised Land_ at work last night and was forced to turn up
the CD player when this bass line started in. kinda funky, maybe not as
twangy as some would like, but a really cool groove, IMO.

i really liked _Awake_'s heaviness, but i also like some of the more
mellow aspects of _Voices_ and _Scarred_. basically, i would like to see
a balance between the heavy (Mirror/Lie) and the calm (Innocence Faded).
that way, no matter what mood i'm in, i can pop in a DT disc and there's
    something to match the mood.

BTW- i dubbed TTT for a friend of mine and he's trying to learn part of
the instrumental on his trumpet. i've always thought that a brass section
could have a field day with this song.....

well, i've rambled quite enough for one day. until next time....
    Adam

I listened to Space Dye Vest carefully. It's definitely Conan, but are you
sure that the other one is Andy? It doesn't really sound like him. Also,
that last line is a little hard to make out. Could it be "I like swimming
in drool"? Probably not. Has anyone ever seen it when they do the staring
contest? That shit is funny. How come Conan always has these buttmunch
groups on his show like the seminifrious tubliodial buttnoids and not good
bands like Dream Theater? The only time I ever saw a really good band that
wasn't well known on a late night show was when Dennis Miller had King's X.
Anyone ever see that? It was a few years ago. Later.

Hello all. This has nothing to do with DT but I found in funny.

This is an article I found in a Wisconsin entertainment newspaper called
Night Sites and Sounds. I hope you find it as hilarious as I do:

The Night Sites Guide to Understanding Local Musicians

WHAT THEY SAY WHAT THEY MEAN

Night Sites sucks. You haven't written about
                                                      my band.
You aren't responsible journalists. You haven't written about
                                                       my band.
I used to read Night Sites, but it's
really gone downhill. You wrote about my band and
                                                        didn't like us.
You're doing your readers a great disservice. You haven't written about
                                                        my band.
We're close to getting signed. One of our friends has a
                                                        cousin who works in the
                                                        Sony mailroom.
I sent you a press kit months ago. I'm putting the stamps on
                                                        it now.
All major labels are corporate bloodsuckers. I'd chew off my foot for a
                                                        record contract.
    Producers suck. Our drummer slobbered
                                                        drunkenly over Butch
                                                        Vig at the Cafe
                                                        Montmartre once, and
                                                        now he won't return our
                                                        phone calls.
We've really got our own sound. We're hoping nobody notices
                                                        that we copped all our
                                                        licks from Nirvana's
                                                        "Bleach."
Club owners X,Y,and Z really screwed us. We've got no draw.

I'm really influenced by(insert name of My favorite album is Hootie
esoteric, underground musician, poet, or & the Blowfish's
    writer here.) "Cracked Rear View."

The music scene here sucks. My 15-minute cowbell solo
did not go over well at
                                                         all.

We're gonna concentrate on our music Our bassist can't hold a
    full-time. job and Denny's just
                                                        canned me.

We're playing all over the state. We played a Milwaukee
                                                        suburb-once.

    Hope ya liked it!

    Hey guys!

I guess I'll have to meet James in person to decide about him. I've
just heard him insult foreign audiences a few times, which kind of bugs me.
Like on the Japan PPV video/Wake Up!

"Ok, why don't you let me learn the language first before you try
    to talk to me."

    Or the Milan show:
"You people don't expect me to know what you're yelling about."

I still think he's a great singer, so don't think I want him out of the
band or anything. NOTHING beats that high F! in Learning to Live.
In other news, I heard Mr. Bungle's first CD last week. It's REALLY
weird, but I think you guys would like it. It's like progressive,
jazz-influenced, circus music on acid. Check it out if you're in the mood
    for something different! Later guys!

Someone in ytsejam 1159 wrote this about the sound level in the Malibu
    Beach Club:

In response to note from the Digital Man ( Hello Wedge! ), I gotta
    warn most of you...
hearing damage is almost a certainty if you're on the floor...the Malibu
puts on, in my guess the loadest of rock shows....
I saw Extreme there last year, and I was ringing for about 3 days...

I agree. The sound level at Malibu is extremely high. To compound things
for me. The last DT concert I went to at Malibu. I was standing directly
in front of the speakers. It doesn't seem that bad when you are there.
Obviously because the music is awesome, so we don't mind. But in my case,
I heard ringing sounds for over 2 weeks! I strongly recommened that anyone
who goes to the show at Malibu, not to stay next to the speakers.

YES, YES, YES!!!!! I couldn't think of a better man for the job! What
emotion that guy has! I think the only problem he might run into is his range.
Can he sing the older stuff as well? Who knows, but to stick him in with DT,
wouldn't that be a treat! The animal within would finally be set free! =)

I still think "Sex and Religion" is Steve's best. It's the least experimental,
but it just plain rocks from beginning to end! If anyone was curious about the
band "Vai", apparently it was an experiment by Steve to do a whole "Band"-type
album. He never really had any intention of doing another album with those
guys. (I could be wrong about the instrumentalists, but I know he dumped
    Devon.)

I went to the Mike P. clinic in Garden Grove on the 26th put on
by Moody Music. Unfortunately, I didn't know about it until I got home
so I didn't bring my ACOS from him to sign (I only had it copied onto
tape). Anyway, Mike kicked ass! He started off with a back-breaking solo
that left me drooling (I'm a drummer, BTW). Like the other clinics, he
then explained his whole counting philosophy with odd time sigs and then,
in essence, became a human jukebox. People asked him to play the intros to
"6:00" and "Under A Glass Moon," some of "Ytsejam," etc. He played the
middle of "Metropolis" without any accompaniment. Incidentally, Mike
described the entire middle part of that song as "a chance for us to blow
our load." He then did some really cool stuff with a track that mixed
tribal and latin beats. It was getting dark so he ended by playing along
to "Erotomania." Anyway, that's all common knowledge. Here's what I found
    out once I met him:

            1) He really is as cool as everybody says he is. I was one of the
last people in line for autographs because I stayed seated while he
played along to "Erotomania" while 90% of the people got in line. He
treated me like I was the first person in line. I even got a picture with
    him!

            2) DT has one entire song completed. It clocks in at around
twelve minutes and is going to be called either "Raise the Knife" or
"Raising the Knife" (the band hadn't decided yet). Mike wrote the lyrics
for it. He says that they've got some other bits and pieces lying around,
but for now this is the only finished song.

            3) The Nov. 16th calander does indeed refer to the day that
Mike's mother died. He showed me his "Carpe Diem" tattoo on his left arm.
However, in contrast to what another jammer reported, Mike told me that
this is the section of the song that is about his mother specifically,
not "Another World." He told me that when his mom died he then had to
REALLY learn what that latin phrase means.

            4) Although a Japanese Instructional video has been made, there
are no immediate plans for an american release, although Mike was hoping
to do it sometime next year. I believe the Japanese video is put out by a
company called "Axis." He joked that there was no need for an american
tape because there were like ten people video tapping the event on their
camcorders and a countless number of others that had hand-held audio
    recorders.

            5) He mentioned during the clinic that the entire band utilizes
his numbers method for odd times. He says that they literally sometimes
sit around a table with a calculator to figure out how to divide up a
    given section.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head. I'll fill in th
    gaps later if I can.

                                                    Richie

P.S. Mike also said, "Tell the 'jam I say, 'What's up!'"

Fates Warning have a new video out (or Teresa Roncon said it was new
anyway), for "Through Different Eyes". I just saw it on the Power 30 on
Much Music. It's got the old guy in it (that guy has turned into quite the
celeb) and the statue from the PS cover all over the place. Maybe all the
rumours of Fates going heavier again are true. Anyway, just thought I'd
mention that, which brings me to the next point.

Something I'd really like to see DT do for the next album is put out at
least a couple of GOOD videos. I've seen the videos for Lie and PMU
(haven't seen any others - I don't have LIT (yet), and Much Music doesn't
want to play any of the others), and neither of them are great, they both
look like they were put together quickly and sloppily, without much thought.
Of course, I've seen much worse, but
if DT were to put out a couple of good videos, instead of maybe 3 or 4 like
they did for Awake and I&W, most of which don't get played anyway and were a
waste of money, I think that would help them a lot as well.

I think that's a better alternative than them putting out a really radio
friendly song, and could work. Then again, you people in the US don't have
HBB anymore, so it might not be such a good idea. :) But if Fates can do it
(both the videos I've seen of theirs, Monument and Through Different Eyes,
were pretty well done, they were both mainly the band playing, but still
better than any of DT's videos), why can't DT?

    > I don't know about all this complaining about James' voice by >some. I love his voice. The only complaint I have about it is that >he overdoes the breathing. He gets all breathy, you can hear him >breathing during the song. That stuff's gotta go. But the actual >singing is great. More harmonies is a good idea.

I've always found that to be one of the strengths/interests of James' voice. As long as he doesn't overdo it, I love it. It adds some depth and emotion to his singing. I don't see why that "has to go". I sure as hell would rather listen to the type of singing he does in WFS than his horrible screaming and screeching in The Mirror/Lie, or 6:00 or CiaW. I can see him doing that type of thing a couple of times in the song, but to do it for the whole song, just ruins it for me.

Come on, it's not like he's panting and puffing and moaning throughout the song like he's in some porno movie or something. :) In Scarred for example, the "I'm afraid of the world" part just wouldn't work as well if he didn't sing it softly with "air" like that. Similarly, "I'll always remember ... the chill of November" is just amazing, and adds a lot of emotion that wasn't found very often on I&W or with Charlie.

But yes, Harmonies are good, I think everyone here would agree that they'd like to see more/better harmonies on the next album.

    > I would like to see (hear) JP playing in a whole different >style than we've been hearing on the albums. the beginning riff of >"Scarred" is a good example of a guitar style we don't hear much from >DT. We've had the scale runs, the arpegiating, we loved it, but I >would like there to be some things in new styles. Something

Noooo!!! I don't know if I'm the only person here who doesn't like the intro to Scarred, I don't know how to describe my thoughts very well here, but I guess you could say I just find it kind of boring. I mean, the intro to a song doesn't have to be incredibly intense for me to like it, but I guess I just don't like that style. The accoustic intro to ACOS, and both the live and accoustic intros to TKH, etc. are all great, for some reason I just don't like the intro to Scarred. Oh well. Hopefully someone will back me up here. :)

No way, you know damn well that what we all REALLY want to hear is rap! Progressive rap ... Dream Theater meets the Dream Warriors ... yeah! Hmm, speaking of which, it seems quite often if I mention Dream Theater to someone they say "do you mean Dream Warriors" (did they play at Lollapalooser or something? I would imagine that would be why).

    > And finally, and many of you will not like this, I would like >to see 1 attempt at a radio-friendly song. Something to keep the >boys going, y'know - make some money? I hate it! :) It's not a bad idea, -if- they can make something that's both radio friendly and doesn't deviate from their style too much. If they can make something that showcases their talent and progressiveness -and- is radio friendly, then fine, but what are the chances of that?

I don't think you have much to worry about. Dream Theater aren't the most popular band, but they're still pretty popular. At least where I live. They get enough exposure and have enough hardcore fans that they'll always have a reasonably sized audience, no matter what they do. Also, if they start making radio friendly songs, and realize people like that stuff, who's to say they won't make 4 or 5 on the next album after that?

Plus, Voices and The Silent Man far outshine this intro >to A Mind Beside Itself. Voices is my FAVORITE song on Awake.

I think people will generally be split on this issue. I personally love both the instrumental breaks, and completely instrumental songs. I would like to see them include at least one full instrumental on the next album. Why? Well, I can't really give a reason for it, but why not? On Awake, the instrumental sections within songs were shorter and less complex than on I&W. If they're going to do that, then there should be an instrumental. It's not that I don't like James voice, but DT tend to get far better and more complex when doing instrumental stuff, and there's just something that's more appealing about a complex instrumental melody, as opposed to James' voice doing all the melodies.

Also, for me, it's the opposite - Erotomania is the hgihlight of AMBI. I usually listen to it, and skip the other 2 tracks, occasionally I listen to Voices as well, but I almost always skip over TSM. But I guess I would have to admit that I like the instrumental breaks in TTT, Metropolis, UAGM, LTL, and ACOS more than Erotomania (then again, I like most of I&W more than most of Awake) ...

I still can't get over DT taking out the old Inevitable Summer from ACOS. The new version is great, don't get me wrong, but the old one with all the shredding and neoclassical stuff was just incredibly intense, and ranks right up there with the instrumental section of Metropolis as my favourite DT moment (or favourite 4-5 minutes of DT, I guess I should say), with the 5 minute instrumental section from LTL coming close as well.

(Holy shit, this was like my 6th post to the jam today...)

Hey Jammers, Since Christmas is right around the corner, I fear that I am about to be consumed by a plethora of boring Christmas songs from all directions. I was wondering if anyone could suggest some seasonal songs that are a bit more recent as covered by some heavier artists. The only ones that I know of so far are Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24) by Savatage and O Holy Night (Sub. and AD) *<---DT content*. I know that Deliverance played a rockin' cover of Silent Night, but I lost my copy of that tape. And Winger played a boogie version of Silent Night on eMpTyV a few years ago that I thought was pretty cool, but I can't find that anywhere either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to e-mail me privately.

Ska Dream Theater?!? Hmmm...interesting. Could work, too. Something similar to "Lil' Jack Horny" and "Get the Funk Out" off of Parnografitti, maybe? I'd kinda like to hear that...

    Hey all:

I'm sure this has probobly been covered in the past, but could someone direct me to a subconscious dubsite? I'm dying to get a copy. If only i were online earlier, maybe i could've bought my own......

By the way, DT should definitely stick with one guitarist. I hate it when JP overdubs, because everything gets cluttered. Two of the same instruments, especially when you're dealing with distorted guitars, don't sound good together. However, mix an acoustic and an electric, and you've got a killer sound. Besides, with a keyboardist DT shouldn't have to be overdubbing guitar tracks. Listen to any of their live stuff, the blend of instruments sounds so much better.

Gotta go. Anyone that's willing to dub subconscious for me, or direct me to a dubsite, please email me privately.

    Thanks.

Hello, I haven't been keeping up on my Ytsejams lately, been really busy. I'm one of the poor saps who is taking Organic Chemistry. now, I have read the last 3 issues, the only ones I have on my account now, I had to delete LOTS of stuff because I am running out of quote. now, there are 2 things I would like to say: 1.) to the person who started that religious thing, I didn't read your original message. if you have a copy of it, would you please send it to me, so I can see what you wrote. it seems that you have caused quite a stir, and I would like to see why. yes, I am Christian, Baptist to be precise, if you are wondering. I'm just curious for my own reasons, though. 2.) Dream Theater with a rhythm guitarist? really hard to say. with all the skill in the band musically, it would be hard to work someone in, and, also, there is a chance of musical OVERKILL there! kind of like trying to add a rhythm guitarist to Van Halen, just how well will it work? that's all! thanks me

    Hello d'ere,

Someone a few jams ago said they didn't understand why Portnoy liked Terry Bozzio so much. There's been some great examples of his work. But if you want to see him in action, there's a video out by Frank Zappa called Baby Snakes. It was recorded live at the Palladium in NYC 10-31-78 and features a killer solo by Terry Ted. If you can find it for rent, I strongly recommend renting it. There is some great claymation in it plus the brilliant guitar work of the master, Frank Zappa.

    > >Idea #2: A song that features John Myung with a Kick-Ass bass groove. > >Something along the lines of a Les Claypool type song. They can do > >jazz, they can do bluesy stuff (in concert), but can they pull off > >funk? Should they?

I don't think funk is suited to DT, but I love their bass-driven material ala Caught in a Web. Rather than along the lines of a Les Claypool type song, how about along the lines of a Doug Pinnick in Dogman type song. How about along the lines of John Myung in Long Island Expressway from AD? Now THERE'S a nice bass sound. Would you call that funk? Oh well, there's my 1/50 dollar's worth. Mmmmm love that bass. --YtseDan

    One problem with your plan:

Marc R. wrote that he would much rather see a keyboardist rather than a = rhythm guitar player. I have to disagree. A second guitarist could not = only help with musical contributions, but would also give more backing = in live performances. There are times when DT plays live that the mix = is missing something. A good example would be the beginning of Pull Me = Under. The main riff seems to be missing at the beginning (after the = drums do the tom thing and kicks into the 'balls and chunk'). This = could easily be fixed with another guitar player.

As for not being able to solo, I again must disagree. James Hetfield = can play some solos that are as cool as what Kirk plays, IMHO. = Examples: middle solo of Master of Puppets, solo on To Live Is To Die, = and Nothing Else Matters. Just because he doesn't choose to play a = bunch of solos doesn't mean he can't. Besides, with such great rhythm = work, he doesn't need to worry about solos. He's one of the best (if = not the best) rhythm players in metal.

    Just a thought.

I just found out that I was missing something really cool. As you probably already know, I'm a drummer, and I automatically pay attentionto the drums in whatever music I'm listening to. I was listening to PMU, and not really paying attention and for the first time, I noticed that really cool guitar/bass run/duo thingy before the lead in to the first chorus. That's prrrrretty cool.
