The Tea Party were in the list of my top 4 groups I posted on
the jam. I have both their albums and have seen them 3 times
this year, 4 times in all. I would compare them with Zepelin and
Doors, though more to the heavier end. They are 3 very talented
musicians, as well as usual rock instr. they play some eastern
    instruments.

after listening to my new cds, i decided to recommend them here. i got
them at sights & sounds at a record show. they can be emailed at
    genesisman@aol.com

    1. Vauxdvihl "to dimension logic"- australian band, like a heavier,
atmospheric DT, a little more guitar dominated but similar in style
and development. not as wild instrumentallly (except for some guitar
solos). fairly dark, complex, and exciting. excellent vocals and
instrumentation, very well developed, and very well written. great
    production, too. very strong.

    2. Epica "confini" - like queensryche, excellent guitars and
atmospheric keyboards, and excellent vocals (in italian). reminds me
of rage for order. i need to listen to it more. i like it a lot but
the production is somewhat week and it makes it a little hard to focus
on. that's also partially because the vocals are in a foreign
    language.

    3. metropolis "unsure destination" - not really metal. more like
kansas mixed with echlyn, but without the annoyingness of echolyn. the
lead singer needs to let loose a little more. he's good but he needs
to push himself a little more at times. the music is occasionally
jazzy, always melodic, and it keeps me interested all the way through.
i like the dynamics a lot, and the songs are pretty solid.

    4. auditory imagery "so alive" - my least favorite so far, but i like
it enough that i'm glad i bought it. its mostly because i'm so blown
away by vauxdvihl and metropolis. this one's been around for a while,
its kindof reminiscent of fates warning more than dt. and damn the
machine somewhat. its definitely pretty good. i havent formed too much
of an opinion on it yet.

once again, that address is genesisman@aol.com. check out vauxdvihl,
you won't be dissappointed. and his prices are great. the most
expensive one was vauxdvihl, and its an independant release from
    australia.

unfortunately, he was sold out of ivanhoe, but supposedly it's to be
    released domestically soon.

I had a curious thought the other day. I was wondering what all the
people on this list who like to tell everyone else what they can and
can not talk about would do on the IRC chat line? Like, would they
start yelling at people for talking about something other than DT?
If they had control of the channel, would they kick people off and
    ban them?
This could be your chance guys!

After reading Part IV, I have figured out who Ytse and Jam are:
Jam is...<drum roll please>...Gary Cherone of Extreme (look at the
first few lines of Part IV again...one line from _III Sides To Every Story_ and
one from _Pornagraffiti_, and then Ytse says a line (about Jam) from their
first album. Yeah, that's it...that's the ticket!!!
Ytse is...<ditto>...my Dad, if he were more in tune with music created
within the last 15 years. Those band name puns are AWFUL!!! "...you are
really rolling the bones..." "...throw him in the iron maiden..."

Well, to me, the YYZ beginning sounds like:
    Ting Ti-ting-ting-ting Ti-ting-ting-ting-ting Ti-ti-...(back to beginning)

I read somewhere that this is supposed to be Morse code for the letters
YYZ. Could somebody explain to me how the two letters are broken down?
I haven't been able to figure it out.
    Thanks.

    Jammers,
It is unfortunate that i must report to you that Israeli Prime Minister
Yitchak Rabin was killed yesterday morning (Israel Time) at a peace rally.
The assassin was a 25 year old Israeli law student. He was apprehended at
    the scene.
    Later,

    Hey guys,

Sorry about this, but many of you have met the band and I've never
been that lucky, so I'm going to speak my mind. Just skip this part of my
    message if you want.

**MIKE PORTNOY! YOU ROCK! Being a guitarist, I sometimes have a
hard time aprreciating drumming as much as I should, but believe it or not,
you've influenced my guitar playing through your very cool attitude and
approach to the kit. THANK YOU! SEE YOU AT THE EL 'N GEE!**

About the El 'n Gee show, I haven't heard from my friend in New
London, so if ANYONE can come up with a good all-ages meeting place for
before the show, suggest it on the jam! We should finalize this relatively
soon, because many of the college jammers won't have internet access during
    December vacation. Later Guys!!!!

This is my first post. A few things that I wanted to say:

            1. Shadow Gallery is really CHEEEEESY music. A few good songs but
just so CHEEEESY (prime example is Alaska).

            2. Most Christian Metal SUCKS.

            3. DT fans should really check out ANGRA. There first album Angels
Cry kicked so much ass. These Brazilians are led by singer
Andre Matos who possess one of the best voices in metal. They
follow more of a symphonic metal style because Matos likes to
conduct orchestras. Angels Cry is loaded with awesome melodies
and has one of the best album covers I have ever seen.

Andre Matos used to sing for VIPER. Their album Theater of Fate
got rave reviews from metal magazines like BURRN and ROCK HARD.
VIPER (which has opened for METALLICA and SABBATH in Brazil)
kicked his ass out because he liked keyboards and stuff so he
formed his own band. Theater of Fate is really good by the way.

Matos is a big fan of Dream Theater and Queensryche. I know there
are a few ANGRA fans on the Jam. Their new one Holy Land just came
               out around halloween.

TO ALL PROG/POWER METAL FANS, BUY ANGELS CRY.

(It is only available through the mail order company L.M.P. Empire.
They represent GOOD prog metal bands from other countries.
You can find HEAVENS GATE (which opened for DT), VIPER, ELDRITCH,
and ABRAXAS (which I hear is awesome but I haven't heard them).

I have 2 questions related to LatM. Does anyone know if Bombay
Vindaloo has ever been played anywhere else (possibly with variations of
some sort)? Also, does anyone know the meaning/source/purpose of the
little symbol in the liner notes? It looks a bit like a pepper with the
vines on it. It's just a little white symbol that appears 3 places in the
liner notes. I've seen a similar (very similar) symbol in religious
books. I've wondered about this for a while.

In regards to Savatage. I have Dead Winter Dead and I like it a
great deal. The only other cd I have by them is Streets, but I've heard
some other songs. I like DWD a lot; probably better than Streets. I like
Streets, but I like Zak's voice a lot better than Jon's. I would recommend
this for anyone who has heard any of the last 3 albums and is looking for
    some good, similar stuff.

If anyone has copies of the recent shows in Japan, please e-mail
me personally and we can try to work out some trade. I'd love to have a
    copy of any of these.

One other thing. I saw DT and Fates Warning in Dallas in 1994
(nearly a year ago). I was expecting I Mother Earth and was a bit
disappointed because I really dig them. However, I was impressed with
Fates' show. I recognized a couple songs off Parallels and thought they
were better than the album versions. I also liked Monument. Seeing them
prompted me to buy Parallels and Inside Out this past summer. I like the
albums, but their sound is much heavier (and though heavier doesn't always
mean better, in this case it does).

But something on it just disturbs me a LITTLE bit. It's James' "Aaahh"
and "Oooh" during LIE. Am I the only one who doesn't like this there
because I just want to listen to the MUSIC? Don't get me wrong, I
really like James when singing his lyrics to the amazing music of DT
but here IMO I think he'd better be quiet. Anyone else?

    >Last weekend was the second time I made a 10-hour-train-trip to see/hear

    >that doesn't have a record deal yet (around 500, I think, weisst Du's genau,
    >Bernd?)! The show was really great!

Yeah, that's right! :-) Well it's my band... :-) There were 514 people
    to say it exactly.

    >They played all songs from the CD plus three from their demo, and they did
    >a good job! The light was fantastic, at the after-show-party (thanks, Bernd!)
    >we had a long discussion if it was better than DT's....
    >Besides the good music it was nice to meet 4 other 'jammers (Hi Evelyn, Bernd,
    >Dimi, Tilman!).
    >So watch out for the forthcoming Superior WWW-page with samples!
    >I'm sure a lot of you would like the CD! Ask Bernd (basmer@med-rz.uni-sb.de)
    >if you wannna order it.

Yes! Please! Ask me!! :-) The WWW-pages will be finished soon
(oder Evelyn? :-)) and then I'll tell you all what's the matter with
    this all.

    Morning world

(well, I assume it's morning: everything is fairly dull and grey outside, but
the pain behind my eyeballs tends to suggest a hangover on its way, and that
    usually indicates morning).

Enough of this, I have a question (aimed principally at the European Jammers):
Did anybody else watch Headbangers' Ball last night? I noticed something strange
in a couple of videos and I wondered if anybody else saw it: in the top left
hand side of the screen there was a symbol that looked like a green leather
purse/money bag with a dollar sign on it. Anybody else see it/know what it
means? Do we have to make contributions to buy Vanessa some more black undies?
The symbol appeared in more than one video, so it isn't just a gag on the part
    of some band.

Now a bit of DT stuff. Quite a few of us have said recently that Scarred is our
favourite DT song/shame the lads never play it live etc. Does anybody have a
song that they don't particularly like on the album, but which they think is
great live? My vote would have to go to Fortune In Lies. It just picks up so
much energy live, that I sometimes wish I'd never heard the studio version.

OK, work calls, another day of writing software users' manuals that nobody
    reads. RTFM.

More from this side of the pond later.

    stay safe and happy listening

I would have to say Ting-ti-ding is from "Scarred "or "Surprise! You're
Dead" from Faith No More and da,da,da,da,da,da,dee,dum-dum,da-da is from
"Metropolis P.I." at approximately 7:14 (if you aren't refering to drums I
believe the instruments would be bass, guitar, and keyboards or any one of
    these).

    Just my suggestion.

I highly doubt that the show is sold out. I was checking prices
on Fri., and there were still tickets available....in addition,
the ticket that I bought last week from the mall around here was
ticket #32, and I saw the cashier have a stack of tickets.....

I am going to buy another ticket today, so I will let you
know for sure if it is sold out or not - I really highly doubt it...

I saw Iron Maiden last night.

It was fun, but they played far too much new stuff. Blaze Bayley did a great job with
a collection of poor songs from the new album. At least Eddie made his special 'appearance'!

The show went out live on Radio 1 - did anyone tape it?

I wore my Dream Theater t-shirt, and now it's totally ruined :-(

Just wanted to send a public thanks to the guys (Troy, Joe, Dave and Mike)

one on saturday after calling about 10 places... it was at a small local

liked the way this list is, everyone on it is great!

I just noticed something. With everyone talking about their
favorite song which is not played live, I went back to give
a closer listen to "Scarred." I shoved my Awake cassette into
the car stereo on the way home from work, only to realize:
SCARRED IS NOT ON THE AWAKE CASSETTE! Huh? How could this be?
Most likely because it is an eleven minute song, and didn't have
room for it, but still.... That goes to show how observant I am.
I've had the cassette and CD for about a year now, and never
noticed! Oh, well. Back to the jam.

I'm goin' to NYC Thursday night to see some friends for the weekend. Anyone
out there can give the name to some cool live music venue we can hit
spontaneously? She lives on the Upper East Side, but any Manhattan venue would
be cool. I'd assume the Village or Soho would have to have something! THANKS

    hello all,

Looks like I should be back on again. My system had mail problems and
I guess that after the 3 day limit on rejected mail messages I was
    automatically unsubscribed:(

I hope I did not miss anything important.

Did Mike Portnoy do the drun clinics ever with Tommy Aldridge? I was wondering
since Tommy is doing a drum clinic today in Baltimore.

I got AD #189 last week. It is great!!!! I do admit that on some of the
songs James does get very high, almost "falsetto" as my girlfriend puts it.
She thinks all prog metal singers sing "falsetto" which to her means they
make their voices sound too high and very unnatural. I am not a musician,
so do any musician types care to comment?

Since Al Balkewicz has been back online for a few weeks now. I was wondering
why he does not respond to any of my emails or posts to the jam inquiring
about the 3 videos he has owed me since February.
I guess I will keep hounding him until he gives me some new excuse....
