    Hello!

    To Damon M. Fibraio:

Damon? You really LIKE the bass sound on WDADU? Ok, it fitted somehow, but
I never liked this crack when he hits a string. I remember I was wondering
what this rhythmic crack in "Ytse Jam" was before I discovered that it was the
    bass.

I still think Awake has the best bass sound of all studio albums. With his
six string bass he makes a perfect low frequency base. Yes, you can't hear it
so clearly when you don't focus on it, but that fits Johns character perfectly!
He's a team player, it works only when he plays with the band.

Hell, I love that sound, as much as you love the sound on the first album. I
bought a better car hifi and built better speakers just to hear this killing
bass at the end of The Mirror better!

    Hello--
Got a question here: Where and when was AD recorded, and why? This
has probably been discussed, but I must have missed it. It seems they must
have been between keyboardists. Was this a live show and this is a soundboard,
or was it studio? Any info?

    Hey, folks.
In Jam 1157, someone said that they bought the new AIC CD and it was =
screwed up right out of the package. I had the same thing happen to me =
with a Korn CD. There was this bubble lookin' thang on the CD. I don't =
know how it got there, but the local merchant seemed happy enough to get =
    me a new one.
Since I'm new to posting, I better go ahead and give all of my faves =
and non-faves. Metropolis is my favorite off of I&W and Scarred and SDV =
are favorites on Awake. I don't really care much for WDADU due to =
Charlie D. and the really poor production. I think Status Seeker is the =
worst song they have. The lyrics and music just feel a little generic. =
(I'll probably get a vicious flame about this, but I know someone out =
    there agrees.)
Finally, I'm looking for the Subcon CD or tape. If anyone has it and =
would like to sell, e-mail me and we'll set something up. Name a price.
Off to calculus. Have a good one.

You could check out Steve Vai's "Sex and Religion". Terry does some
pretty cool stuff on there, but if you really want so hear him wail, the
best thing to do would be to check out any one of his instructional

monster! He is one of the scariest drummers in the world. Have you ever
seen a picture of his kit? He uses EVERY instrument he has. He has 3
(yes three) bass drums which are tuned differently from eachother.
    Definitely worth cheking out.

Heck, why not have a few instrumentals and maybe two epics? And maybe an
    instrumental epic as well?

    > DT doesn't use enough of them in my opinion...

Agreed. I love harmonies, and I don't really love James's voice (though
    I like it okay).

But they hardly ever have harmonies. Maybe they need a bit of help. They
should enlist the help of the Wilde Silas Mass Choir (featuring the
Galactic Cowboys). Maybe Sam Taylor could produce the album.

Anyway, here're the things I want to see. Not that it will matter, since
the band won't see this, and even if they do...you know what they say
    about committees...

    1) Fusion. Jazz. Swing it, baby. I'd like to see this album as a jazz/fusion
one. They've had touches of it, but can they go all the way? My challenge.

    2) More instrumentation. I like the band and all, but it'd be so neat with
a cello in a song, and a couple saxes in another, a flute/cornet duet
in another. Neat stuff for neat stuff's sake.

    3) Special guest musicians. With new fangled instrumentation, you need
people to play those instruments, and they should use the chance to
enlist the aid of well-known prog guys. It'd help sell the album, as
well. Throw in a few keyboard duels with famous keyboard guys, that'd
    kick butt.

    4) Chapman Stick or Warr Guitar. While I'm on an instrument kick, the
touchstyle guitar is really neat. Sure, John can tap (either one...),
    but try this.

    5) A mellotron. (: It's not progressive unless you have a mellotron. (:

    6) Bill Bruford. (: See number 5.

Coincidentally, I was channel-cruising last night and saw the same Unsolved

    bullets still had a live primer (the metal circle in the back of the bullet;
when the hammer hits the primer, it ignites the gunpowder between the primer
and the lead tip, which then causes the tip to explode out of the casing),
and when the gun was test-fired, the lead cap got lodged in the barrel of
the gun, and as you said - no one checked it.

I always liked the bass sound on WDADU. How was that produced and could
they produce it again for the new album? I mean that was a powerful bass
sound and coupled with Derek's crunchy organ it would make for some really
cool sounds. I mean James's singing in his grungier voice, JP's crunchy
guitar, JM's bass like it was on WDADU Derek's organ and MP's Awake drums?
Oh, baby. Maybe it would sound cool.
In response to what JM's bass was on WDADU, in an old issue of guitar player
magazine it was listed as an Ernie Ball Music Man with a Dimarzio EB Bass
pickup fitted in the neck position. It is a similar modification that Billy
    Sheean(sp?) has done.
His Bass amplification was listed as Mesa or Pierce, Forgive me if my
memory is foggy in this one. The article compared his modifications and amp
setup as "heavy on the Sheean side"

Just a few thoughts on things in the Jam...

Damon: Thanks for the Tesla album name. I have all five albums, but I couldn't
for the life of me remember "Psychotic Supper." Anyone else have the mind
block where you can't just think about it later and it bugs you to no end? I'm
always afraid I'll wake up at 4 a.m. witht he answer and be too lazy to write
it down or something and forget by morning light. Anyway.....

No matter what influence the Beatles (BTW, I am familiar with all their stuff,
even the rooftop years) had on rock, I will never like 'em (along with
    Michigan football and Indiana basketball.

Karri: You mentioned the DT covers as a waste of album space (paraphrased and
creatively edited) and orginals being better than covers because they're
originals. I think it'd have been cool if DT did do something different with
    the covers, too.
It'd be nice to see *their* interpretation of the tunes, but then again,
that may be their interpretation. As far as orginials always being better than
covers: "All aloong the watchtower". If anyone thinks Dylan did a better job
than Jimi, I'm gonna have to ask you to step outside!!! :)

Finally, I saw Thought Industry at Thurston's in Chicago back in early
    October.
I don't know if it was the engineering, but I thought they sounded like
    crap.
As far as the music compostion goes, they sounded closer to industrial than
progressive (labels!!!). I didn't care for them at all. Plus, the singer was
pretty poor. Maybe I need to borrow someone's disc (don't wanna risk a
    purchase). LATER-

Right on. I've been listening to WDADU a lot lately and the keys solos kick
ass. I'd love to see more of that. Maybe some cool "battling" between
guitar and keys (or is that too Yngwie? :).

    > A song that features John Myung with a Kick-Ass bass groove.

Oh yeah. You know. One of my favorite grooves is in TTT. The 6/4 part where
the vocals enter. That's real nice. I don't care so much about "funk" as
    something like that TTT groove.

    > I'd say that The Mirror/Lie is about as heavy as I'd like to see
    > them go.

Agreed. Lie is awfully heavy for DT I think. I mean, it's the one song that
has the most single note pedal type stuff that's really low keeping it
really heavy. I don't want them to go any heavier really.

    > Idea #5: Stick with the "Awake" producers on this one. The

    > anything... There are plenty of happy blues oriented songs out

No. I don't think that would fit DT at all. They are not a blues band in
any way. And I'm no fan of Aerosmith either. I don't think it would sound
like DT to do an original bluesy song. If they want to do blues, let 'em do
    a cover.

Doesn't that just flip you out? I remember my first reaction to LaBrie (I
got Awake before I&W). I thought, "finally. A rock vocalist with a strong,
clear voice. I bet he's classically trained [turns out he is]. It's such a
relief to hear a rock vocalist who can sing." Now, I was deep in classical
study myself at that time but it's true today. My friend said that he
sounds like an '80's metal singer! He was telling someone that I like DT
and they were like "Dream Theater???!" He defended them by saying "no.
they're really good. it's just the vocalist." Weird. I dig LaBrie :).

Well. Soundgarden's SpoonMan is in 7/4 for the main riff. I don't think
it's odd-times so much, although that's a favorite thing to point at. The
best odd-time stuff isn't noticable as odd time. Polyrhythms probably stand
out the most which may be why you hear them the least. Like The Mirror.
That's real real noticable and. Unconventional song structures? I'm not
sure what's meant by that. What DT songs don't have a verse and chorus? I
think it's the way the song is approached.

Typically, I would consider this a topic that should be dealt with
in a personal level, rather than on the Jam, but so many people have taken
it upon themselves to make comments, I have decided to respond this way.
I simply don't have the time to respond to every person individually.
Many generalities are made regarding the issue of religion, both
in life and on this list. As a general rule, generalities suck. They are
at times necessary in order to keep conversations to a reasonable length,
but I think it has gone too far in this case.
Christians have been refered to as a collective group and as if
they had only one collective mind. In a sense, those who are not
Christians have sometimes been refered to in the same way. As a
Christian, I don't take such comments personally, because they are often
done simply to get under someones skin; typically a Christian. This is a
foolish thing to do. You can't reasonably expect to flame someones
beliefs and not expect a response.
It doesn't bother me that religion is discussed on this list even
though I know it does some people. However if we are going to discuss it,
may we do as as mature adults, not as children exchanging insults? My
beliefs differ from many others out there, but that I am a Christian does
not mean every comment made about my beliefs are automatically done in
order to make a convert. I do not request or expect the atheists or
anyone else to hide their belief, or lack of. I also don't think anyone
should expect Christians to hide their beliefs either, especially if
    they're provoked.
Something I would hope most of us could agree on is that nothing
beneficial comes from the name-calling. The Christians don't make any
converts and the non-Christians don't get the Christians to shut up. It
doesn't work like that. Communication doesn't work like that.
Though we will all never agree on this issue, I think it can still
be discussed if we all use some self-control and thought before
    commenting.

On a more specific note made by a Catholic on the list. The
comment said something about how it is the belief of modern Christianity
that no one goes to hell unless they openly renounce the Gospel. Maybe I
haven't heard the latest, but I wasn't under the impression that
Christianity has changed over the last 2,000 years. I am not
knowledgeable enough about Catholicism to comment about that system of
theology. But as far as my beliefs go, the truth does not change.

have been in my 6 disc changer for 3 weeks. Excellent albums!!! Anyway,
my question is: What other great bands are available on the Magna Carta
label. I would really appreciate any info about this wonderful label that
understands what good music is all about. Also, isn't Kevin Moore going
to sign on with M.C.? Thanks for the help, Kevin.

I may not be farmiliar with the show but I'm fairly sure that last line
isn't a part of the previous sample. I _think_ there's a short burst of white
noise and the line is actually:

Try filling up the swimming pool.

It's out of context I know but I'm happy to be corrected :)

Hello, you lucky Jammers who can go to the US-dates and the Ytsecon II:

How about doing a little interview when you (hopefully) meet the band? Many
of the Jammers have questions but no chance to speak to the band till the
next tour. Someone, maybe one of you Ytseconners, but I would do this too
of course, could collect some questions and then you could interview the
    band.

    OPINIONS?

    SUGGESTIONS?

i talked to dane a couple of times over the last two weeks, and saw
his new band "brotherhood" perform. both performances i saw were
sans drummer because he had just quit. the new band is a blues based
song-oriented rock band i guess i would say. reminded me alot of
eric clapton's unplugged stuff, and the eagles, and phish, and the
dead, among other stuff. alot of soloing and screwing around with
tight vocal harmonies and great melodies.

anyway, dane wanted me to tell everyone about the new band and try to
drum up some support. he wants me to start up a web page for them and
everything, and i told him i would see how much support is out there for
    him.

if anyone is interested in hearing his new band, let me know. they dont
have any demos out yet, but i taped two of the shows on DAT off the
    soundboard.

    Hello all!

    Hello Mike Bahr!

    >the info I had and compiled a wonderful description file for

    >got a request, and I'm sure more are curious.

I was the one with the Subconscious liner notes, which you are hopefully
    thinking of.

I'm not surprised you forgot my name. Got on your nerves (and AirDance's) a
lot, didn't I ;-) BTW, how about some info about AD? Though this time liner
notes would be a lot shorter than the Subcon ones.

If someone wants to get this thing, EMAIL ME! I won't send it to the 'jam
until there are a LOT of requests. Last time there wasn't, so I decided just to
mail it to the ones who requested. The whole file is about 25KB, with
lyrics and stuff, and that's just the censored, shortened version!

Nethertheless, I'll send a copy to John Hough, if I didn't already...

BTW, I made an update a few days ago, with the corrected lyrics from the
latest Songbook and several other things, so if you want to update your
    old copy, mail me too.

    Message-ID: <9511272120.AA46411@aixrs1.hrz.uni-essen.de>

    One last time!

    Quick note to William Kriski:

    >Also, how many people have a bootleg of James singing Voices. The one I
    >have is James LaBrie at his absolute worst. Did he have a cold or
    >something?!?

As he told us German Jammers in July he had indeed some problems with his
voice during the first leg of the Awake tour. Just saw the Japan PPV video
from January 1995 (thanks Ties) and well, a lot of problems during the second
half of the show. But that's nothing compared to the problems you hear on
the Osaka soundboard recording. This show was November 1992, maybe he gets
a cold every winter, who knows? In July his voice was remarkably better.

Maybe this was one of the reasons they made the overdubs on the Uncovered
    live tracks on ACOS.

The lyrics of Afterlife are by Dominici. At least on the album version.
What the hell was Chris Collins singing when Majesty did this song live
back in 1986? I can hardly understand one word ;-(
