    Greetings Jammers,

This is a reminder about the tape swap I am conducting for progressive music lovers. The idea is to expose each other to new bands that otherwise would've remained unheard of. Here's the way it works: you email me at: tapeswap@reich.uark.edu and tell me you are interested and I'll send you the full details. The basic idea is this: each participant will make a compilation tape of music by bands that deserve to be more widely known (Shadow Gallery, Ivanhoe, Echolyn, etc.) and send it to three other people that are participating. In return, you will receive three tapes from others that are participating. I will handle all the details as far as who sends to who and do all the paperwork.

Please help your fellow music lover discover some of the great bands that you have been enjoying...

    Ed.

Nice thread. I would like to see Derek's jazz influences come through on some of the songs for the new album. Something more than the few moments he gets on ACOS. I don't know about a whole song written just by him. Dream Theater has always taken an entire band approach, and I kind of like that. They definitely need to do an instrumental that is an original composition in its own right. Erotomania just didn't do it for me (being 5 parts stuck together). I don't know about all this complaining about James' voice by some. I love his voice. The only complaint I have about it is that he overdoes the breathing. He gets all breathy, you can hear him breathing during the song. That stuff's gotta go. But the actual singing is great. More harmonies is a good idea. I would like to see (hear) JP playing in a whole different style than we've been hearing on the albums. the beginning riff of "Scarred" is a good example of a guitar style we don't hear much from DT. We've had the scale runs, the arpegiating, we loved it, but I would like there to be some things in new styles. Something completely jazzy would be cool. Or something R&B'ish within a prog-rock song? How about some old-fashioned finger-picking? And I definitely would like to see some acoustic songs that are more than simple rhythm songs (acoustic, but not SM, or SDV). Something acoustic that has the same level of complexity as the other stuff - the same energy level. And finally, and many of you will not like this, I would like to see 1 attempt at a radio-friendly song. Something to keep the boys going, y'know - make some money? I hate always having to worry that my favorite group is only 1 bad album away from dying out. Plus, once you've got some clout, you gain a lot of freedoms.

Jammers, Does anyone know what the seating (standing) arrangements are like at the Malibu. I got my tickets and they say on them "GA" but give seat and row numbers. Are there seats there? Does the place have a balcony of some sort? My guess is that they are labled this way strictly for attendance figures or whatever. Could someone please let let me know about this?

P.S. I was watching the Discovery channel a while back and saw a DT "reference". During a commercial for one of their programs, they show a giant blue eyeball with a clock face on it just like the one on the "Lie" single. Roman numerals and everything. I think it was for the "Time Travelers" show.

'Twas the Night Before Christmas (PC Sytle)*

    A Christmas poem

'Twas the night before Christmas and Santa's a wreck... How to live in a world that's politically correct? His workers no longer would answer to "Elves". "Vertically Challenged" they were calling themselves. And labor conditions at the north pole Were alleged by the union to stifle the soul.

Four reindeer had vanished, without much propriety, Released to the wilds by the Humane Society. And equal employment had made it quite clear That Santa had better not use just reindeer. So Dancer and Donner, Comet and Cupid, Were replaced with 4 pigs, and you know that looked stupid!

The runners had been removed from his sleigh; The ruts were termed dangerous by the E.P.A. And people had started to call for the cops When they heard sled noises on their roof-tops. Second-hand smoke from his pipe had his workers quite frightened. His fur trimmed red suit was called "Unenlightened."

And to show you the strangeness of life's ebbs and flows, Rudolf was suing over unauthorized use of his nose And had gone on Geraldo, in front of the nation, Demanding millions in over-due compensation.

So, half of the reindeer were gone; and his wife, Who suddenly said she'd enough of this life, Joined a self-help group, packed, and left in a whiz, Demanding from now on her title was Ms.

And as for the gifts, why, he'd ne'er had a notion That making a choice could cause so much commotion. Nothing of leather, nothing of fur, Which meant nothing for him. And nothing for her. Nothing that might be construed to pollute. Nothing to aim. Nothing to shoot. Nothing that clamored or made lots of noise. Nothing for just girls. Or just for the boys. Nothing that claimed to be gender specific. Nothing that's warlike or non-pacific.

No candy or sweets...they were bad for the tooth. Nothing that seemed to embellish a truth. And fairy tales, while not yet forbidden, Were like Ken and Barbie, better off hidden. For they raised the hackles of those psychological Who claimed the only good gift was one ecological.

No baseball, no football...someone could get hurt; Besides, playing sports exposed kids to dirt. Dolls were said to be sexist, and should be passe; And Nintendo would rot your entire brain away.

So Santa just stood there, disheveled, perplexed; He just could not figure out what to do next. He tried to be merry, tried to be gay, But you've got to be careful with that word today. His sack was quite empty, limp to the ground; Nothing fully acceptable was to be found.

Something special was needed, a gift that he might Give to all without angering the left or the right. A gift that would satisfy, with no indecision, Each group of people, every religion; Every ethnicity, every hue, Everyone, everywhere...even you. So here is that gift, it's price beyond worth... "May you and your loved ones enjoy peace on earth."

    Hey guys!

I just got back from Thanksgiving break. Hope you guys all had fun!! I have a couple new threads I'd like to see explored on the JAM. Here goes...

    1) If James could not sing for DT, what would you VAI fans think about Devon Townshend filling the job? Do you think he could do it? I think he'd be really cool in DT. Let me know! I've always been a big James fan, but the combination of his attitude and his not-so-great live performance reputation are making me get sick of him.

    2) How cool would it be if DT covered either the *entire* "Carry on Wayward Son" or "Tom Sawyer" by RUSH. The guys *must * know Tom Sawyer. Someone suggest it to Mike Portnoy!

Ok, no flames about the James thing. I think he's a really good singer, but I agree with the guy who sai he turns a LOT of people off of DT. Recently, I've found this to be true.

BAFU! Thanks for the *cool* JP poster and for giving me an easy way to slip in the obligatory Bafu Vai content!! :)

    ----COVERING THE COSTS----

We will also have to have some kind of donations or entry fee or something to raise money for this. I was considering having this in a meeting room in a hotel near the club. This can run from $200-???? ...way up there depending on the # of people and size of room. Last year costed $600! Also we need some kind of food/refreshments and I would like to get some shirts made saying something about YtseCon II w/ the Majesty logo on it to give to everyone who comes. So I am thinking that maybe $20-$25 per person would cover everything. I will get back to you all on the exact price and all that, but I would really prefer that the money be sent prior to the show so I'm not diging so far in my empty pocket to front the cash!!!

----------I NEED SOME HELP!!!!!-------- If anyone in the LI area would like to help w/ some smaller details I would really appriciate it!!!! It is very hard to arrange something from 900 miles away! It would be stuff like going to check out possible places for the con and dtuff like that. Let me know if you are interested.

------WAIT FOR A FURTHER UPDATE AND... ------- If you have any ideas about the meeting place or anything else for that mater, let me know.

I always thought that the 4th verse was one of Kevin Moore's...

"I can see muhc clearer now, I'm blind" kinda reflects Kevin's lyrics on "Surrounded." For example, "I once could see, but now at last I'm blind."

I always saw Kevin Moore as the Bible-quoting lyricist (until Petrucci took over on Awake). Kevin's WDADU and IAW lyrics are pretty spiritual...then he got sidetracked by a girl before he started writing for Awake...

My guesses for the verse author of TTT are: V1: Mike Portnoy V2: John Petrucci V3: John Myung V4: Kevin Moore

I do think that the fourth verse is easily Moore, though the starter of this thread may not think so. The first 3 are kinda hard...at least for me to tell...I wish Portnoy would fill us in on this (HINT, HINT, MIKE PORTNOY, IF YOU'RE READING!!!!!).

To whomever wrote about more harmonies in DT:

If you want to hear a DT-type band with the killer harmonies to boot, check out Shadow Gallery's new CD "Carved in Stone". Truly, truly an impressive disc. I wasn't too thrilled with their first disc, but the new album is truly magnificent. They run the gamut from sensitive acoustic ballads to all out t thrashers to twenty minute epics. The production is slick, the musicianship is equal or beyond DT, the harmonies are killer, lyrics are good, it's just a masterpiece.

As to what I would like to see on the next DT album, I would like to see: 3 or 4 songs with lyrics from Portnoy and Myung. I like their lyrical styles, and now that maestro Kevin is gone, I think these two can ably pick up the slack so that JP doesn't feel that he has to do even more (I personally thought he went over the top at times on Awake, flame away). I would also like to see a song or two from Derek, and I would like to see Derek really get into the keys. I hope that he expands greatly upon the sounds he used on ACOS, I thought the patch he used for his solo was killer, but I think that he could've shied away from using the organ sound so much, again, flame away. I would like to see a ton of unison lines, some really wild playing, and some really sensitive ballads a la WFS and TSM. I would also like to see the same production team from Awake again. They did a great job, particularly with Portnoy's drums, and I would like to see them top themselves. Above all, I want DT to put out a DT album. Is that too much to ask for?

train your ear. we bassists can hear him cuz we're trained to hear those burried notes. course, any mortal can do this; after dating the current gf for 5 years she now listens first to the bass then everything else :)

    >Idea #3: WDADU and I&W are decidedly less "Heavy" than Awake and ACoS. Though

i think they may stay ACoS-ish heavy. looking at the current music scene(s) heavy seems to be good. the Awake tours were bigger than I&W -i'm making this all up. i don't know for sure- so it would seem that the heavy brings out more ppl. yes, yes, yes DT has grow in popularity but setting that aside, i think the heavy attracts more ppl. take a look at Fates Warning: from PS, they've grown increasingly less-heavy; then they do a tour w/ DT and see that heavy draws ppl; and now, what are the rumours about the new Fates? that's right, it's supposed to be more towards the NE/PS stuff -they're taking a left turn from IO. and once again, i'm ignoring the variables of doing music not for money, but for the music. but i think this is a general trend...at least w/ DT and FW :)

    >Idea #4: Keep up the complexity!!! (Should we expect anything less?)

definately!! and i vote no on Metropolis Pt.II

    >Idea #5: Stick with the "Awake" producers on this one. The "Live" feel >coupled with Mike's "true" drum sound is a force to be reckoned with!

yeah, and Mike's piccolo snare on the entire album would round it out nicely!

    >Idea #6: In the solo after TLF on LiT ("Barfbag", right?) JP did some >wonderful bluesy grooves. A song in a blues scale would be the perfect touch

hmm...no. keep that stuff in solos/intros/outros/inprov jams.

    >Idea #7: Of course, they'd need to include their token insturmental song as >well as their usual 12 minute epic. I mean, this is Dream Theater we're >talking about isn't it??? ;)

the Ytse Jam Part II?? hahaha JOKE! i am NOT serious about that!

    >Idea #8: Oooh! Harmonies! In ACoS, there are some places in the song where

when done tastefully and in the right places, yes, harmonies would be kool. but when they're overdone and in every song...bleh. and screw the ppl who don't like James! i think he's swell (and does a >great< Sebastian Bach ;)

and 2 the ppl who keep gettin on NuGgEtMaN for talkin in IRC.speak: chill! he cant help it; he's addicted. atleasthe'snottypinglikethis.wudntawholepostofnospacesbereallyannoy?believei tornot, someppltypelikethisonIRC.

I noticed some poeple have been posting lyrical quizzes so I'm going to post one. You're truly a lyrical gangsta if you get this one: "So darn cute a big head with one eye, Girls can't keep their hands off of him and neither can I." Here's an easy one: "Let's put our clothes back on and by the way girl, what's your name again?" Just one more that cracks me up when I hear it, it's easy too: "Boy! Your soul better belong to Jesus! Hmmm-mmm cause your ass belongs to me!" Later. ---KL

Okay, I'm gonna save some space this time and cut down on the quoting.

And that's the sad thing about it. An REM song has become a good theme for the Dream Theater (and related bands) mailing list. I think we really need to stop with all the religious talk. But if you DO throw in a religious quip, just remember that ALL religions are only beliefs held by certain groups of individuals. When talking about YOUR religion (or lack thereof), one only has to say, "I BELIEVE..." That's all I'm going to say about this subject. I know it sounds PC, but believe me, it doesn't take a lot of effort to type those two simple words.

The people who > -don't- already have all the covers probably -don't- want them. The only

I must disagree. I don't have a lot of the older stuff and I'd like to get it on tape, especially Genesis, Yes, etc. Sure, I have some of it already on tape (Rush, Metallica, Pink Foyd), but I think this two-tape set would be an excellent compilation. Just listen to it in the tape deck of your car while driving to work or school.

Zach is still the lead singer, but Jon sings two songs on DWD - "I Am" and "Doesn't Matter Anyway."

    [Cut poem]

I hate to say this, but was actualy more sad than funny. For some reason, I wanted to cry, not laugh. I'm not sure why. Well, okay the part with the pigs replacing the reindeer and Rupolph going on Geraldo were funny. But, it made me wonder. I know it's supposed be exaggerated, but it pains me to think that there might be people out there who think this way. But actually, I think it was those last few lines that touched my soul.

    > Something special was needed, a gift that he might > Give to all without angering the left or the right. > A gift that would satisfy, with no indecision, > Each group of people, every religion; > Every ethnicity, every hue, > Everyone, everywhere...even you. > So here is that gift, it's price beyond worth... > "May you and your loved ones enjoy peace on earth." Of course what saddens me most is that EVEN this gift may offend those who thrist for war and destruction. There is truly nothing in this world that will not offend a living soul. I can only pray that Santa's gift is accepted by all. And I can only hope that one day Santa's gift will come to pass.

We can hope for the future But there might not be one

I mean James's singing in his grungier voice, JP's crunchy > guitar, JM's bass like it was on WDADU Derek's organ and MP's Awake drums? > Oh, baby. Maybe it would sound cool. I disagree with you here. I thought the bass sound on WDADU was fairly shitty, mostly because of the volume. I thought that bass sound allowed Myung to show what he can do with those basslines better than with a big fat bass sound, but I can hear a big fat bassline much better. And that just means I can appreciate Myung's presence more just because I can hear him more of the time. No, I think the Awake producers had the right idea on this one. But me, always the perfectionist, think they could have turned it up *just* a little more. As for Mike's drums, this is kind of a sore point for me, since this is what I listen to DT for. On Awake, I thought almost everything was miked real well. I was particularly impressed by the volume on the cymbals, all 30 or 40 of them :). BUT, I had a hell of a time hearing the toms at times. What's the deal? I can't think of a single album that I have where they suppressed the toms like that. And it's not like Mike rarely uses the toms. I mean, some of his tom hits are ridiculously faint. Whenever I hear one of these really faint ones, I wonder if I'm just imagining it. Stuff like this really bugs me. And, just so you know where you know where I'm coming from, I have a gripe with the drums' sound on every album Dream Theater has put out so far. Pretty frustrating, considering DT's my favorite band and all.
