I always liked the bass sound on WDADU. How was that produced and could
they produce it again for the new album? I mean that was a powerful bass
sound and coupled with Derek's crunchy organ it would make for some really
cool sounds. I mean James's singing in his grungier voice, JP's crunchy
guitar, JM's bass like it was on WDADU Derek's organ and MP's Awake drums?
Oh, baby. Maybe it would sound cool.

DT did play EVE on the IAW tour several times. I know that it was on my
copy of Milan 93 without the samples. I wonder why Kevin never put the
    samples on the studio version.

I hardly ever write to the list, but this is exeptional.

Me and two of my friends were in the line for tickets in Limelight
(NYC) when I saw Mike Portnoy walking by few feet away. I couldn't believe
my eyes at first but than I put myself together and went to catch up with
him. I felt kind of stupid since I felt like I should do something, but I
didn't know what to say when I come up to him. Well I did come up to him
eventually. All I had wits for is to make sure it was really him (it was),
ask him a couple of questions, complement him on his work and get an
autograph. Among other things, what I found out from him is that DT just
started working on the new album and that they will do ACOS in full on the
Malibu gig. I feel like I should have done something I don't know what.
ANy suggestions? What would you do if you saw a DT member on the street?

    Well, just felt like sharing.

                            Leo.

    Good one, isn't it?

            NO.

NO, NO, a thousand times no. This is the single biggest
piss-me-offer of all the non-religious arguments: that all religious
people have nothing better to do with their day than pursue the pagans.
I mean, think about it: wouldn't that be ludicrous if it were true??
To all of you who think like Chris does: readjust your conclusions on
this issue. The only MAJOR religions that actually go around trying to
force you to be a part of it are Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, and
Evangelical variants of Protestantism. (not all!) Most forms of
Protestantism (and there are dozens of them), all forms of Catholicism
and Orthodox Christianity, and scores of other religions do not "rub
    their religion in your noses".

I'm a Roman Catholic. It is NOT a part of my religion that I am
supposed to look down at non-Catholics or non-believers... it is NOT a
part of my religion that I have a duty to "bring them to God". If it
really means a lot to me that a specific person somewhere does not
believe, my religion says I should pray for that person, and try to be as
understanding as possible of their position. In fact, that's the exact
same language the Pope also used when dealing with the issues of
homosexuality and such. If only he was that understanding on the abortion
issue... it's too polarizing for me to be a part of. But again, to
reiterate: we are taught to appreciate and respect their position. Do not
condemn, do not interfere, and do not insist that
they are doomed to hell. Pray for them in private, on your own time, and
try to be a good friend when you can. That's it.

Incidentally, most branches of Christianity do _not_ believe that
non-believers are headed straight to hell. Early views of this are
illustrated in Alighieri Dante's "Inferno/the Divine Comedy", but the
modern view is a bit different. In the modern doctrine, the only way one
can be sent to hell is to come into the fullness of knowing Christ and
his forgiveness for us, and to still reject even _that_. And we're not
supposed to even get a shot at it until after we die, so it's not
something that's any of our business to press upon other people.

    > ANY further reply is welcome in Email. I will not respod to the jam on this
    > matter again, even if I am insulted in public.

I hope you took my response as a logical and factual one and not
as an insult... it's my aim to get as many facts out into the open as
possible so that people like you don't feel threatened by the presence of
    people like me.

And now, that's about all I plan to ever say on the Jam about
religion. I'm sorry to all those who were annoyed by it. I've already
said too much. Religion is a personal thing; the most personal thing of
all, actually. I hope all of your own religions, whatever form they may
take (or none at all), lead you down the path that is right for you.

just watched some anime' movies, so I'm in sort of a Japanese kind of
mood today. Those animated films are so good...) Required Bafu content.

Yes yes yes!! Good thread! I'm on it already. :)

I must concur and hope it will come to pass. We need to see
what sort of ideas Derek will express now that he has the chance. Playing
keyboards for Alice Cooper and Kiss dosen't exactly put a person in the
drivers' seat for theme and direction. :)

Hmmm... a thwippety twangety bass sort of song. It could happen.
I wonder what sort of lyrical or musical theme would fit in with this?
Myung's real-life lyrics and Petrucci's myth and mystery won't work.
Moore is gone, but his betrayal and love lyrics wouldn't have worked
either. James' writing style can fit the bill, and Portnoy's perhaps even
better. (remember the thesaurus that was the original ACOS?) Ironically,
Derek might be best suited to write such a song. I'd hope he didn't
though, since we still need to hear that he can be "a PART of what IS
    Dream Theater".

    > Idea #3: WDADU and I&W are decidedly less "Heavy" than Awake and ACoS. Though
    > ACoS is slightly less heavy than Awake. So where should this heaviness go on

Well, crunch metal is arguably dead, but punk is rawer than
metal, and yet pop/alternative is softer than IAW. More variance is
likely where they're headed. I would expect more of that usual rich
guitar work from Petrucci, and that should drive the rest of the sound.

    > Idea #4: Keep up the complexity!!! (Should we expect anything less?)
    > Possibly a Metropolis Pt. 2??? (Though was it Mike Portnoy who said that the
    > "Part 1" wasn't meant to be taken seriously? Didn't he say that it was there

    > completely insane minute or two of madness is ALWAYS fun!!! =)

Definitely! DT is our best source of epic music these days.

    > Idea #8: Oooh! Harmonies! In ACoS, there are some places in the song where
    > James overdubs his voice (that is his voice, right?) and produces some really
    > powerful harmonies! The one Achilles Heel of DT, I think, is the vocals. I
    > personally love James's voice, but you have to admit that a LOT of people don't

YES YES YES. Vocal harmony is the one "prog" thing DT is weak on.
Teach John Petrucci to sing (he was horribly flat when he sang TSM live
here in Arizona) and then get his vocal tone in on the harmony. After
all, Pull Me Under and Take The Time, two certified masterpieces, are
driven to a great degree by vocal harmonies. Tell DT to get on the phone
with the Galactic Cowboys and maybe take a few lessons. :)

I forget who it was offhand, but there was one Jammer who took
the info I had and compiled a wonderful description file for
Subconscious. Whoever that was, could ya throw it up again? Looks like we

And now, though it will certainly make this post too damned long,
    here is....

POLL: THE BEST OF THE LONGEST
    -=[ RESULTS ]=-

All write-in entries were scored normally. I did not cast a vote: I
also disqualified everyone I know who I hang out with on a regular basis.
The intent was to form an opinion based ONLY on what the Ytsejammers think.
I'll post the "greatest songs ever" of my own group of people here, which
includes long and short, sometime later.

I've marked the results off into "tiers" which represent groupings
of the same range of votes... there were definite "clumpings" and not a

    -=[ ERRATA AND MISCELLANY ]=-

    * All votes and voting records were deleted as soon as I'd recorded
them, so don't worry, if you voted for a weird song and it got crushed,
    nobody will ever know. :)

    * As you saw, Operation Mindcrime was the OVERWHELMING concept album
winner here. It makes me wonder why Queensryche's recent tour was such a
financial bust. The performance was pretty incredible as well. Bands with
albums that have THIS kind of total core following usually have consistent,
unwavering success, a la Van Halen. I guess that's what QR gets for making
Promised Land (another good showing in this poll) so progressive. I'm glad
they did, though... it's a very deep, mature album.

    * In other news, the epic songs vote was a lot closer, as was evident
above. At any given day during the poll, the top four songs would be in a
different order than the day before. That marks these four as consistent
favourites, and if I had cut the poll shorter by a day or extended it by a
day, the results could well have been different. Consider them "mutual
winners", based on the close numbers. All four of those were the vote leader
at least once during the polling. This qualifies them as a category within
    themselves, hence the tier system.

    * The #1-#2 concept album combination that came up the most was
Operation Mindcrime-Little Earthquakes, which occurred 14 times! It was like
deja vu all over again when I'd read those votes.

    * The next most frequent #1-#2 were Mindcrime and either 2112 or Awake.
    Both combinations occurred ten times.

    * Only 5 votes for Learning To Live did NOT place it in the #1 spot
if they voted for it at all. Learning To Live was the overwhelming leader
for concept songs in the number of #1 votes tallied, but if it wasn't a
favourite, it usually wasn't even mentioned. Love it or hate it, I guess.

    * Songs that gained their (surprisingly high) totals based entirely
on #2-5 votes (no #1 votes registered): Speak To Me, Suite Sister Mary, The
Camera Eye. Albums that did the same: 3 Sides, Brave, Pornograffiti.

    * Epic songs #1-10 were created entirely by four bands. Eight of the
ten were by Rush or Dream Theater.

    * Someone with a good eye for statistics wanna break this down a bit
more? I'd like to see points by band, differentials between those stats and
the actual rankings, and so on. I didn't keep any extra info like what male
vs. female Jammers voted for (didn't think to do it until that other guy
posted his poll results, by then it was too late) but there's plenty that can
be broken down from these results right here.

    * I received votes from all the regulars (just about) and a whole slew
of people who I've never seen or heard from before. Post, you Silent Men!
(and Women!) The Jam is so much better off when there's something cool to
talk about. Really!! In fact, I sort of encourage the inevitable verbal
fencing that will follow this poll based on its results.

Take care everyone! Hope you had fun.

I had a small believing-problem with the spoken SDV samples as they were
written in the latest faq. I don't. First I will quote up what's listed in
the faq, then what I think the voices are saying. (And if anyone's an
expert on what the voices are saying, it's me. They talk to me all the
time.) I posted what I heard in SDV a long time ago, but I guess the faq
    author heard things differently.

    > ** 6.3 Where are the samples in "Space-Dye Vest" from?
    >
    > The following is (unconfirmed) from a Conan O'Brien show:
    >
    > "That's what they say that, like that in Houston, or
    > something. They say 'yeah, it's 180 degrees, but it's a dry
    > heat.'"
    >
    > "In Houston they say that?"
    >
    > "Oh, maybe not, I'm all mixed up."
    >
    > "Dry until they hit the swimming pool."

I would like to confirm that this passage was on Conan 'O Brien. Does
    anyone else recognize those voices?

    (Space-Dye Vest, 3:47)

Conan: "That, so they say that, in ya-know like, Houston or something,
      you'd say it's, yeah it's a hundred-and-eighty degrees, but it's a DRY
      heat."

Andy: "In HOUSTON they say that?"

Conan: "Oh maybe not, I'm all mixed up."

Andy/Guest: "Dry until I had the swimming pool."

I can't tell if the last line is Andy or not. He usually speaks rather
slowly, and yes I'm aware that the entire sample is sped up slightly, so
obviously his voice would be higher and faster. But his voice would still
be deeper and slower than Conan's, which leads me to believe that this
voice was the guest, whomever he was. (Yes, I watch the show whenever I
    can! :) )

Here is the written sample I have the main believing-problem with.

    > This sample has not been identified as of yet:
    >
    > (unintelligible talking)"...I'll get up with the sun...she
    > doesn't, she doesn't want you to sleep in...I don't care what
    > you do, I don't care what you say, you're grounded...that door
    > gets locked, that door gets locked at night by 9 o'clock. If
    > you're not in this house by 9 o'clock, then you'd better find
    > someplace to sleep...you think you can go to your mom's house
    > and sucker her into it?..."(unintelligible talking)

    This is what I hear:

    (Space-Dye Vest, 4:03)

Man's voice: "(first word unintelligible) I'm an exterminator, I'll get up
with the sun. Listen. You have your own room to sleep in, I don't care
what you do, (clinking metal) I don't care when. That door gets
locked... (rhythmic sound, either two objects being rubbed together or
fast breathing like someone crying/sniffling) that door gets locked---"

(all those "other" noises during this passage really sound to me like
someone in the room, possibly the "boy," is cleaning a gun or taking apart
    some metal object.)

Other male voice, possibly the man's son: "At 9--"

Father continues: "At 9 o'clock. You're not in this house by 9 o'clock,
then you'd better find someplace to sleep. Because you're not gonna be a
bum in this house. Supper is ready. (last line smothered in crescendoing
      piano)"

Does anyone agree/disagree with this? Get out your Awake cds and try
reading along with each. Everybody now! Sing it with me! I'm a Space-Dye-
Vest wearer and I'm okay! I curse women all night and I sulk all day!

Holy fuckin' shit! I just got back from the Malibu, where Anthrax,
backed by Life of Agony and the Deaftones, put on one of the most amazing
shows I have ever been to! Someone opened up a can of whoop-ass inside
    that place. It was phenomenal!

However, there was one problem. It seems that the metalhead moshers and
the skinhead moshers weren't particularly enthralled with each other's
presence, because someone got stabbed in the pit. I don't know if they
caught the person with the knife or not. This was a fucked-up thing to do.

Don't, however, be put off by this, and think about changing your concert
plans. The only problem was actually in the pit. I was pretty far away,
so I didn't even see it happen or anything. Also, it was the only
incident of its kind that I can remember at the Malibu.

Anyway, a piece of advice for those of you that wish to avoid the pit:
Towards the back of the place (if you're facing the stage) are steps and
stuff with railings around them in places. Get yourself to a railing.
You have something to lean on, you can see the whole stage (provided you
find one whose view isn't blocked by a pillar), and you get to watch what
goes on in the pit. I tell you, watching that pit while L.O.A. and
Anthrax were on almost (and I mean almost) made me want to get in.

And finally, a piece of advice for those of you that will be near the
stage on 12/28: If you mosh into me, it will be the last thing you do
    with teeth in your head.

Ooo, a concept album could be very good, especially after "A Change of
Seasons." Not to mention, within in the last 2 years two EXCELLENT concept
    albums have come out:
        Marillion - Brave
        Saga - Generation 13

Long live prog rock and the concept album!!

Well, Patricia, you seem to know everything there is to know about Satch, so can you
    answer this question:

Who's supporting him on the UK tour?

On my ticket, it says 'Plus Special Guest', which suggests a solo artist, such as . . .
    Steve Vai? In my dreams!

    Hi there,

Last Saturday I went to see two great Dutch bands: Celastial Season
(Or something, maybe this isn't the right spelling)and THE GATHERING.
These two bands performed in 'Het Beest' in Goes, Holland. I can tell
    you: It was great.
CS normally plays metal with two violanists (Female). Unfortunately
this time they just used the guitars and stuff. It was my first time
to see those guys playing and hopefully not the last time. The rithms
they use rule! (Without dubble bass!)
Then there was this great band with its female singer, keyboards etc.
The Gathering: GREAT, GREAT and great again. Jammers, if you want to
listen to something else, try this!! Great melody lines, lots of
rithms and never boring! The light show was magnificant! They played
almost every song of their last CD and two of their first CD
(Always). Some people call it Dancing Death metal. Yeah, I understand
what they mean. That girl was living in the metal saturday night.
Jammers, The only thing I can say is: Try this! If you want more
information, I can arrange that I think.

    The metal Greetings,

    Wimetal, Wim Slabbekoorn: wslabb@mail.HZeeland.nl

    Hello everyone!

I am new to the jam, I subscribed about two weeks ago...
I think it is really cool...
My favourite JP solo... I think the solo on Another Day is
absolutely fantastic-when I first heard Another Day I went nuts
over the solo! I also like the lead on PMU very much
How about the best Kevin Moore solo? I'd say the YtseJam
solo is one of his best. I also think John Myung really plays a
fantastic solo there...and Mike Portnoy too!!!

Charlie vs James... I think James kicks ass, beyond doubt!!!
WDADU is a wonderful album , but I truly believe that Charlie's
singing spoils it ( sorry Charlie fans...) especially after having
    heard LATM....
I can't wait to hear WDATU!!!

Hey , moshing is pretty cool!! When I started listening to Heavy
Metal I really liked Thrash, and there's a lot of moshing associated
with it! Afterall , DT have got their thrash moments (AFIL,PMU,
Under A Glass Moon,The Mirror , etc. etc....).

That is an excellent idea !!! I am talking about the new thread:
What do we want to hear on the new DT album
I too would like to hear a bass solo, more vocal harmonies, etc.
What I would really like is to have more thrashy , comlicated bits
like in WDADU (I think that was heavier than the other albums)
and lots of keys in the style of IAW (not necessarily a copy of
Kevin's style...). I would also want it to be 24 hrs long .... or
    more..........

Well, I don't have much more to say for now, hope to get some
    replies.....

    > Andras

Both are correct. Zachary Stevens sings all but two songs on the new
release; "I Am" and "Doesn't Matter Anyway" are sung by Jon Oliva.

Jon never *really* left the band - while he did not sing lead on either
Edge of Thorns or Handful of Rain, he did write, produce and play keys on
    them.

Okey, I'm kind of new here, but okey kill me if you heard these before:

    1) Who can provide me with a copy of AD or the Ronnie Scott's (Video????) ?
            Mail me...

    2) All you guys playing in progressive bands on a non commercial (at
this time being anyway) stage please drop me a line and we'll swap
tapes. I have recorded both 4-track demos (Actually very good sound
quality) and a studio demo (Exellent sound crappy songs, to me
anyway) with my group called AFTERGLOW (nope not named after the FW
track, rather after a ELO (BARF!!!!) box that our drummer owns...

Okay, hope to hear from someone sooooon....

Bafu Vai, was it you that put just about every letter in the alphabet in my
name? Better watch it or I'll turn into a Bafu Babs and start picking on
    you.

Also, while I'm posting I want to comment on the Beatles bashing. There's
nothing that I can do to influence anyone's opinion, all I can say is that
I am very saddened by the lack of interest for their music. The other day
I was having lunch with a group of people (I work at a university) and we
all went around the room naming our favorite Beatles tune and then we got
to the wonderful 22 year old who sat there and couldn't recall the name of
one tune. I just want to mention that they were four men who all took
turns with their contribution (i.e. composing) and each song projected that
musicians personality, in my eyes that is quite an achievement! For
everyone who claims that they love DT so much, you should take the time (no
pun intended) to look and see who influenced them. Trust me I know what
I'm talking about. Hey, I confess, I can't stand the band Yes (please
don't anybody jump on my shit about it either), but I will listen to them
when they come on the radio and try to see what other people find so
    appealing about them.

Ok, that's enough rambling I don't want the "List Meister" to yell at me
for bad content. Geez, do you think that we should hold a yearly election
for the job of "List Meister" (snicker)?

    Take care everyone,

    Hi all

since you are all subscribers to the Jam, I think I can safely assume that we
all consider DT to be one of the finest bands around at the moment. But have
you ever stopped to consider what DT don't have that some other bands do have?
The correct answer is, of course, a rhythm guitarist. In a lot of the bands with
the 'classic' 5-piece line-up (bass, guitar, drums, keys, vocals), the keyboards
often cover the spaces left by the guitar (my opinion: I'm entitled to it and
I'm sticking to it), sort of backing up and bulking up the sound, occasionally
being let out to solo. This work can also be done by a good rhythm guitarist -
but I mean a good one, not just somebody stood at the back going chunk-a-chunk
    all day.

Can anybody imagine DT as a 6-piece with a rhythm guitarist? I found the idea
quite interesting. Maybe James could do the job: it would certainly stop him
leaping around like a threshing machine on amphetamines. Who else could you see
doing the job: Keith Richards? James Hetfield? My personal choice would have to
Aaron Aedy from Paradise Lost - certainly the best I've ever seen/heard.

I was glad to see that so many people know where my last lyrics question came
from - nice to see some other Zappa fans out there (other than Mike Portnoy -
I like a man who gets his inspiration while taking a dump and admits to it).

Well, only a short one from me today (as the bishop said to the actress).

    stay safe and happy listening
