First, I'd have to agree in part with Greg, that the people who would want
the tape project probably already have most of the covers. The people who
-don't- already have all the covers probably -don't- want them. The only
    ones I have
are Rush (Tears) and Metallica (Damage, Inc), as far as I know. As I've
already said, I can't stand the Beatles or Led Zepplin, so about the only
covers I'd actually want would be the Dixie Dreggs one, so there's no point
in me buying this tape project. BUT, I'm glad there are people on the 'jam
who're willing to go to the trouble to undertake such projects ... not just
Mike, but also Jason Giles for the t-shirts, Tim Lodge, and everyone else
who's doing this kind of stuff. I'm sure there will be others who are more
    interested than me.

    >And to all Toronto area 'Jammers who saw MP and JL at the drum clinic,
    >thanks for letting us know that was happening...thanks for nuthin'. Shit!

Agreed. This is about the seventh time I've said this, but I'm -still-
banging my head against the wall for missing this. There's no way I'd have
found out about something as obscure as that on my own anyway, but to find
out after, it's even worse than if I'd actually known about it beforehand
    and not been able to
    make it.

       ================YtseCon II Update==================

                             -------DATE AND TIME????------

----The YtseCon is planned for Thursday, Dec 28 @ aprox. 5:00 pm EST. right
    before the Malibu show----

--------The time and dates are set unless it ends up that no-one can come or
that DT can't make it that day.-------

I know that many of you wanted it at other times, but I had to make it most
practical for everyone and look at all the pros and cons and Malibu won.

                            ------ARE YOU COMING???------
So now what I need to do is get an estimated number of attendants. I will
post the list of people that I have and if you are NOT on the ***MAILBU
(NY)*** show list, and WILL STILL BE ATTENDING the YtseCon send me mail.

I repeat! If you aren't on the following list and will still be attending
the YtseCon, mail me and let me know.

Then the # of attendants can be given to DTs managment to show that this
    isn't just some unorganized party.

                            ----COVERING THE COSTS------
We will also have to have some kind of donations or entry fee or something
to raise money for this. I was considering having this in a meeting room in
a hotel near the club. This can run from $200-???? ...way up there
depending on the # of people and size of room. Last year costed $600! Also
    we need some kind of
food/refreshments and I would like to get some shirts made saying something
about YtseCon II w/ the Majesty logo on it to give to everyone who comes.
So I am thinking that maybe $20-$25 per person would cover everything. I
will get back to you all on the exact price and all that, but I would really
prefer that the money be sent prior to the show so I'm not diging so far in
my empty pocket to front the cash!!!

                        ----------I NEED SOME HELP!!!!!--------
If anyone in the LI area would like to help w/ some smaller details I would
really appriciate it!!!! It is very hard to arrange something from 900
miles away! It would be stuff like going to check out possible places for
the con and dtuff like that. Let me know if you are interested.

------WAIT FOR A FURTHER UPDATE AND... -------
If you have any ideas about the meeting place or anything else for that
    mater, let me know.

    Thank you for your support!!!!

    Hey fellow Ytsejammers.

I'm gonna get off my lurking ass and post! I haven't posted recently
because I didn't have much to say. I figure that if something
controversial is being said, _someone_ (sometimes too may someones) will
offer an intelligent rebuttal (that's not to say that there aren't any
"Jammy" responses). Oftentimes, someone will say somehting that echoes
my own thoughts, therefore nothing more needs to be said by me. Call me
apathetic if you want, but I don't feel the need to parrot another's
opinions. If I have something new to say, I'll say it.

Progressive rock is a very exciting genre. But is it becoming cliched?
    I dunno, perhaps. Perhaps not.

There are a few characteristics that almost all prog-rock bands share.
That is not to say that all prog-rock sounds the same. After all, there
are only 12 notes in the temperament system used in western music, but
does all of it sound the same? But there are some undeniable
similarities that amost all prog-rock bands have. Many of our favorite
bands employ the use of odd time signatures, polyrhtythms, sometimes
    unconventional song structures, etc.

Now if most prog-rock bands employ such elements of the idiom, does it
become cliched? Or is the genre becoming more definable? When bands like
Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Genesis, etc got started, they were doing
something almost entirely new. They took their classical influences and
fleshed them out in a rock context. I would venture to guess that this
was a totally new concept back then. After all, rock n roll was supposed
to be down n dirty. The final product is somehting that the general
public cannot digest easily. The same thing happened with jazz-rock
fusion. The jazz people hated it because it sounded too uncouth, and the
rockers hated it because it was too jazzy for them. And there were a few
select people who enjoyed both genres that gobbled the stuff up. So,
anyway, the stuff that was being done was groundbreaking. Some people
liked it while others scoffed at it.

And now, after many years and many bands, we may start getting used to the
use of odd time signatures, polyrhythms, unconventional song structures,
    and unconventional subject matter.

However, I'm not saying that you can quantify something like music, like
if it has elements A,B, and C, it's progressive, but if it's missing A, B or
C, it's not progressive. You can have a very short piece like Inferno's
"On The Threshold of Depression" which clocks in at 1:31, or _Tales of
Topographic Oceans_ which is a double album and both are considered
progressive. What I'm saying is that we all tend to latch on to some
sense of objectivity and categorization when dealing with something that
is so subjective and dependent upon personal aesthetic values.

So is prog-rock still progressive if yet another band sprouts up on the
scene that writes epic-length songs about Ayn Rand's philosophy in an
    odd-time groove?

Now that we can pinpoint a few elements of the idiom that keep recurring,
can we still call it progressive? Is anything new really being done?
I'm not saying that prog-rock (if we can call it that anymore) is
becoming regurgitative. It's becoming a less-obscure genre that we can
start finding within it elements of an idiom.

Of course, one could argue that the progress that a band makes is not
necessarily in groundbreaking techniques. The progressiveness manifests
itself in the different stylistic approaches that a band may take over the
years. For example, a band like Rush. But IMHO, _all_ artists should
grow and change in a similar manner. Rush would not be the great band
that they are if they kept releasing another _2112_.

So are we going to call it progressive rock for lack of a better term?
I'm beginng to think that prog-rock and metal aren't so progressive
anymore. But this doesn't mean that I like DT, Rush, or FW any less than
    I did before.

Oh yeah, the Dolphins better kick ass the rest of the season.

    I'll see y'all around.

That was Terry Ted Bozzio-that cute little drummer. From "Titties and Beer"

I am SOOO jealous of all o' you in the Tri-State area that get to see DT this
Christmas. I would love to be there, but finances being what they are, it
just isn't going to happen. I think it would be great if DT could find a way
to play a gig at the Dream Theater in Monterey. That would rule! I would be
    there for that big-time.

I've noticed people have been referring to Charlie as Chuck D. The first time
I saw this I thought I got a Public Enemy list by mistake. While Charlie is
nowhere near the singer that James is, IMO he's still good. At least he's
better than me. Besides, the music is great.

Yes, I have the three hour version. The claymation in this movie is
incredible. This movie also doubles as the origin of the 80's new wave band
Missing Persons. Terry Bozzio and Patrick O'Hearn were in the band. The guy
Frank is talking to about trying out for the band is Warren Cucurillo
(spelled wrong) and Dale Bozzio is also in the movie. Dale also is Mary on
    the Joe's Garage LP's.

If you haven't seen this movie, it should be for rent at a video store near

    Hi all,
To you fellow Rush-heads out there:
I just got back from seeing the tribute band 2112 and they are very cool.
With the exception of their guitarist playing a BC Rich, everything seemed
about as authentic as could be expected. Worth $5 to check 'em out!

    To Martin:
There are three reasons why I'd rather hear DT cover Touch of Evil rather than
Painkiller (though I must admit I'd love to see Mike go at it on drums).
First of all, I like Touch of Evil a lot more (personal choice). Also, there
are some keyboard parts to keep Derek busy which lack in Painkiller. And last
but not least, James' vocal style fits Touch of Evil much more so than
Painkiller - just as James never sang Metallica's Damage Inc., I can't imagine
    him doing Painkiller either.

    See ya!

'Twas the Night Before Christmas (PC Sytle)*

                            A Christmas poem

'Twas the night before Christmas and Santa's a wreck...
How to live in a world that's politically correct?
His workers no longer would answer to "Elves".
"Vertically Challenged" they were calling themselves.
And labor conditions at the north pole
Were alleged by the union to stifle the soul.

Four reindeer had vanished, without much propriety,
Released to the wilds by the Humane Society.
And equal employment had made it quite clear
That Santa had better not use just reindeer.
So Dancer and Donner, Comet and Cupid,
Were replaced with 4 pigs, and you know that looked stupid!

    The runners had been removed from his sleigh;
The ruts were termed dangerous by the E.P.A.
And people had started to call for the cops
When they heard sled noises on their roof-tops.
Second-hand smoke from his pipe had his workers quite frightened.
His fur trimmed red suit was called "Unenlightened."

And to show you the strangeness of life's ebbs and flows,
Rudolf was suing over unauthorized use of his nose
And had gone on Geraldo, in front of the nation,
    Demanding millions in over-due compensation.

So, half of the reindeer were gone; and his wife,
Who suddenly said she'd enough of this life,
Joined a self-help group, packed, and left in a whiz,
Demanding from now on her title was Ms.

And as for the gifts, why, he'd ne'er had a notion
That making a choice could cause so much commotion.
Nothing of leather, nothing of fur,
Which meant nothing for him. And nothing for her.
Nothing that might be construed to pollute.
Nothing to aim. Nothing to shoot.
Nothing that clamored or made lots of noise.
Nothing for just girls. Or just for the boys.
Nothing that claimed to be gender specific.
    Nothing that's warlike or non-pacific.

No candy or sweets...they were bad for the tooth.
Nothing that seemed to embellish a truth.
And fairy tales, while not yet forbidden,
Were like Ken and Barbie, better off hidden.
For they raised the hackles of those psychological
Who claimed the only good gift was one ecological.

    No baseball, no football...someone could get hurt;
Besides, playing sports exposed kids to dirt.
    Dolls were said to be sexist, and should be passe;
And Nintendo would rot your entire brain away.

    So Santa just stood there, disheveled, perplexed;
He just could not figure out what to do next.
He tried to be merry, tried to be gay,
But you've got to be careful with that word today.
    His sack was quite empty, limp to the ground;
Nothing fully acceptable was to be found.

Something special was needed, a gift that he might
Give to all without angering the left or the right.
A gift that would satisfy, with no indecision,
    Each group of people, every religion;
    Every ethnicity, every hue,
    Everyone, everywhere...even you.
So here is that gift, it's price beyond worth...
"May you and your loved ones enjoy peace on earth."

    Greetings,

I have a few requests, questions, suggestions.

    1. Could anyone please e-mail me personally on how to redeem Max points.
I have accumulated quite a few.

    2. I will be in College Station, TX next weekend and was wondering if
anyone in that area could tell me what are the good record stores to
visit in the area. Please e-mail personally

    3. The King's X mailing list posts simple rules at the end of each
newsletter. One of the things in this list is how to unsubscribe. Since
it seems that we have a bit of a problem remembering how to do that here,
it seems like some sort of standardized list at the end of each Jam would
be in order. I personally no longer have the original reply that tells
    how to do such things.

There's a new radio show for people living in the bay area: it's called
exposure. It goes on every Sunday from 9 to 10 PM on KSJS, 90.5. Just
letting you know. It's a really awesome show.

            Hi !

            Threads:
God: You know this would die out quickly if people would stop
rubbing beleviers' noses all the time. Instead they(we) do
it all the time and whine when they answer in kind. An EXC-
ELLENT example of this is Chris Dunnowho's post on a couple
of 'jams back. Way to go dude... Post again when you grow up
a couple of years, mentally speaking. (This isn't a flame on
your ideas on christianity. Just that you expressed them HERE
and then went off like it's the end of discussion...DUH!)

Moshing: It seems to be that all the facts (even MP's opinions) are
laid out and now it's only a matter of opinions. If someone has
something new to say check out earlier 'jams to see if it's
been said before (if you can't, don't post). If you have nothing
new, both pro- nad against- are duly noted, so don't post.
This way this thingy can R.I.P. finally =)

Covers...( HIGHLY IMO BASED !! =)
Methinks that covers should be done in a new and different ways.
Since DT does the above so well, I honestly can't understand
why the covers on ACoS were as they were (unimaginite). Now the
trubute cover-show is okay, but why publish it ??? If you do
a cover as the originators in my mind the first version is always
a better one (simply 'cos it's the original). BUT if DT would
do a 'creative covers', I'd definitely wanna hear some Vivaldi
                .... =)

Ehhhmm...Mape: Is that movie- or music trivia ?? =). Let's stick to
English tho. I'd hate see this list swamped in Norwegian or..
or... DUTCH. Sorry dudes, no offense =)

Didn't really want to get this long but....
            Read you later...

A few of you had a question on the DT embrodered hat regarding
    colors.

When I said the hat contains "multi-colored logo...etc.etc..

A: the word "Dream Theater" is written in one color thread.
the word "Ytsejam International" is in another color.
the lines in the hat are in another color.
there is NO "majesty" symbol on the hat.
               the hat has 5 panels.
the hat IS different from the DT window stickers.

I felt I had to respond to this. By my personal definition of progresive,
I think most of the prog stuff being produced today deserves the label.
To me, prog means writing music for music's sake, and consciously staying
away from straight commercial pop/rock/whatever. Therefore, the bands
reusing old prog standards are still progressive, IMHO.

But then again, what do I know? :)

Hmmm... I always pegged this one as Moore, simply because of the lyrical
style - lots of rhyming, among other things. Judging completely on
rhythm it sounds like something Moore-ish, somewhat like OAMOT. Although
the outlook is kinda optimistic for Kevin, this is the "older" version of
him. Surrounded isn't exactly depressing, either.

Speaking of Kev, paging through the latest MW (thanks Jaime!), I saw mention
of Chroma Key, his latest demos. Have I just been asleep and missed these,
or have they not been mentioned much?

I've been quiet for quite a while now, probably because I'm ten jams
behind and i don't like posting when i'm behind cause then whatever i post
will have already been said a bunch of times. I didn't want to look stupid
like all these losers who post that the best selling album of all time is
Pink Floyd after we already decided it was Bing Crosby ten jams ago.

Anyway, since the DT content is starting to get few and far between
("which is... O.K." ...Stuart Smalley) I would like to propose a question,
not a poll, although it would be an interesting poll. What is your favorite
JP solo? Mine would probably have to be that short but powerful solo on LTL
that brings a tear to my eye everytime I hear it. I'm not sure of the time,
but its toward to end and I think everyone knows the one I'm talkin about.

Thanks to Matt Masi for AD (acoustic dreams)! IT rocks! I've even
gotten used to James's vocals on AD (another day). I just picked up the
silent man single and TTT is pretty cool, although pretty the same thing as
on I&W. Eve is pretty swell too.

I also recently picked up the tab for Awake. Its like 160 pages long
whereas most tab books are less than a hundred. I've always known JP was
the greatest guitarist there ever was but holy cow! Even TSM and SDV are
very difficult to play. You just can't possibly appreciate how good JP is
until you try to play his stuff. The only exception is Lie (excluding the
    solo). that's actually pretty easy.

I hope I get some responses to this and I will hopefully catch up tomorrow
    so I can read them

    CRAIG the very humbled guitarist

For those of you who get them and want to play and can't find starter
decks, I've got some extra instruction booklets and LOTS of basic land
cards. You can't play the game without basic land and Fallen Empires
packs don't come with basic lands. You can only find them in Starter Decks.
I'm sure Mike can do the same. <G>

For those of you who DON'T want them, you can send them to me. <G>
Although I already have a lot of Fallen Empires (this set was WAY overprinted),
there are still some choice rare cards I'd like to get more of. The packs
are only really valued at $1.00 a piece, so I'm not asking for much. Despite
the lack of monetary value, however, there ARE some nice cards in this set
that you'll be glad to have if you decide to play.

Believe it or not, I hope my WDaTU comes with a pack.
