Just responding to something I said in response to Ben Laussade:

    > > "1, 2...1,2,3,4,5"
    >
    > Guns N. Roses - "Patience"

Despite the fact that this IS in "Patience" (though I think without the
5), I just listened to Master of Puppets after all of the recent
Metallica talk. I went to Lepar Messiah first to hear this, and low and
behold there it was when I listened close enough. I never noticed it
before. However, it's more like "1, 2...clash, clash, clash, clash,
clash" Basically, the "1, 2, 3, 4, 5" is made by the clash of the
symbols, so that was a little tricky.

And I should have realized that the 13th letter of the alphabet is "M." <G>

    Ello Kiddies,

I know this has been posted a billion times (give or take a few hundred
million) but if anybody out there has the Dates for the E1-N-Gee show and the
Old Bridge show plus the numbers for E1-N-Gee and ticketbastard, could you
please email me privately, I would greatly appreciate it. I am thinking about
flying out for the shows but I need the info before I can call the travel
agent. These shows are a must-see because this will probably be the ONLY time
that DT will be doing cover tunes as part of their show. Thanks in advance.

    > Progressive rock is a very exciting genre. But is it becoming cliched?
    > I dunno, perhaps. Perhaps not.

I would say no. Yes, it's becoming definable, somewhat (though it is
STILL very hard to define, it can be done...vaguely). But 'cliche' means
trite and overused, and progressive rock has a long long way to go before
that--it'd have to explore the entirety of rock music.

    > similarities that amost all prog-rock bands have. Many of our favorite
    > bands employ the use of odd time signatures, polyrhtythms, sometimes
    > unconventional song structures, etc.

These aren't things that are limited enough to be cliche, unless you
define the music theory we work from to be cliche. To overuse 'time
signatures not in 4/4' you'd have to overuse an infinite number
    of time signatures.

Some specific ones, yes, but then the next progrocker will just write
something in 13.5/4 or 10/3 (in my mind foolish creations...found in
some modern 'classical' music...but then I believe in a Fourier theory
of time signatures...who knows about the phrasing, though, it may work
    best).

    > And now, after many years and many bands, we may start getting used to the
    > use of odd time signatures, polyrhythms, unconventional song structures,
    > and unconventional subject matter.

WE do, but the public is still filled with no-taste idiots. I hate to
dis the proles, being one myself, but when it comes to art my humility
    just falls apart.

    > Now that we can pinpoint a few elements of the idiom that keep recurring,
    > can we still call it progressive? Is anything new really being done?

Ah, here it is here. It's a name thing.

See, while the music that is being labeled does have enough similarities
that it does fit together, the word used--in this case 'progressive'--doesn't
    really fit the name.

In a way, it is progressive, because to get to it you'd have to progress
from what the plebes think is good music.

But really, it isn't progressive. It's more regressive, because of
the fallback to classical music (which was simply music better than
what the plebes listened to...you think wandering minstrels played
anything it took taste to listen to?)

There is nothing new under the sun. The whole idea of Progress is a myth.

No, what progressive rock is is music the way it was meant to be, music
written by people who care about music for people who care about music. It's
music that is meant to NOT be boring.

It's like the difference between A SCANNER DARKLY and BRIDGES OF MADISON
COUNTY, or between BABYLON 5 and MELROSE PLACE, or between Leonardo
da Vinci and Joe Shmoe modern-artist who prints geometric shapes for
    hotel lobbies.

'Progressive' just happens to be not the best term here. But since no
one single term could do it ('complex' being closer, but unable to handle
simple progrock like some of Fripp's stuff or the genre/instrumentation
benders), I think 'progressive rock' will do.

Because we know what it means. It doesn't matter if it's idiomatic. Language
    is flexible that way.

    Hola, compadres

I decided to return to school a couple of days early, and I'm glad I did.

Sitting in my mailbox upon my return was my copy of AD. It's super cool. I especially like LSoaD and what they did with Lie. That's a cool song to hear acoustically. No one was kidding around about the crowd noise on Voices and Bad, though. The rest of the CD is killer. Bruce Dickinson is great, etc.

Now I'd like to see DT do ACOS acoustically. Yeah, right.

Hehehe - this is my alltime favorite movie we're discussing now... I *have* to jump in on this one, however belatedly...

Todd wrote: << My guess is the REAL scene where Eric Draven dies. The way I understood it, he was originally supposed to get shot in a store. That's the scene were he was really shot and died. The producers thought it would be quite uncool to use that footage so they reshot a new death. If you pay attention, you'll notice they never show his face in the death scene. Not ever, until he falls out of the window >>

(and this is also clarifying Shyboy's response a little; do I really need to quote it? It'd be like a bulletin from the Department of Redundancy Department... <G>)

Actually, MY understanding is that when Brandon Lee was killed, it was the scene where Funboy, Tin-Tin, Skank, and T-Bird killed Eric Draven - when they shot him and he took "a swan dive out of a six-story window," as Officer Albrecht so eloquently put it. They were firing blanks, but a little piece of metal got lodged in the chamber of one of the guns (I believe it was Funboy's), and when the gun was fired, the metal was dislodged and it punched into Brandon's abdomen like a piece of shrapnel. The description of his actual death is described in the movie book; I'm not 100% positive that it was Funboy, though.

In the scene where Eric is crashing around in the loft, having flashbacks, that's actually a body double, not Brandon himself. They had intended to film the first part of the movie last, in order to allow Brandon to work without the makeup. The part where you see his face in the broken mirror is also not Brandon - that was a trick of computer imaging.

There are indeed a few discrepancies from the graphic novel, primarily the actual circumstance of Eric & Shelly's deaths, as well as those surrounding his relationship with Sarah (not to mention that Albrecht is *white* in the comic), but on the whole, it was pretty darn close, when you consider the travesties that usually result from movies made out of books in general.

Trivia question (if you have the movie book, you'll know the answer to this):

What musician was originally considered as a cast for Eric Draven, and why?

<< If anyone else has any Crow trivia, please email it to me, don't send it to the list. >>

Oops. Well, since there's been a discussion about it by other people as well, I figured what the heck. Gee, we can't talk about Dream Theater ALL the time. <G> While I'm at it, James O'Barr has a cameo in the movie: after Gideon's is blown up and Albrecht turns his attention away from Eric for a second, you see a looter bolting across the street, carrying a TV. Guess who?

[the scene that got cut out] << He slashes Eric with the razor that Darla had and Eric doesn't heal. This is why Eric is wearing the black tape later in the movie.>>

    Ayup. ('nuff said there)

I won't bother replying to the insult, just the content. The discussion would also die out quickly if the religious nuts wouldn't expect it as their right to rub their religion in our noses without a response. After all, it's part of their belief to "convert the non-believers" right? feh. Any mention of any sort of god in control of my life is an affront to MY religion. do I not have a right to reply? Or must we simply coddle the simple-minded theologians who believe in the Christian path and try not to disrupt their mindset? I disagree to both answers.

ANY further reply is welcome in Email. I will not respod to the jam on this matter again, even if I am insulted in public.

Greetings. I finally got my two copies of Acoustic Dreams, thank you Mike. They are number's 352 and 353. As far as I'm concerned, Christmas has already come for me. I have been anxious for AD since before I ordered them. I really liked the version of Tears they did. It sounds better than Geddy. Yeah, I know. Don't push your luck, George. What can I say. The original version didn't sound that good, due to the equipment it was recorded with. I hope that clears up any confusion I may have caused. Whatever, flame away.... I also got LATM from David Kuznick the other day, thanks David. I don't want to start another debate over Charlie or James, but I like James' vocals better on AFIL and AH-tKH. James' range is better and his ability to hit and hold the high notes is unmatched. I even got some of my, I'm almost afraid to say this, COUNTRY friends to listen to it. They didn't admit it at first, but growing up in the '70's, they know good rock music when they hear it. I'll let you know if I convert any of them into DT fan's. Bafu Vai. (Sorry...required content). I picked up my copy of the new Alice in Chains. I got a bad disc. On track ten, there is a prick mark on the disc that causes it to skip. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Something similar happened when I bought Pink Floyd's: Wish You Were Here all those years ago. When I first listened to it, I thought I heard hiss and pops normally associated with albums. I heard it again the other day and the noises are still there. Does anyone else have this disc and hear the same sounds? Let me know... Take care all and have a safe and happy week, George.

I'll tell you this. I've heard Charlie sing things like Oh Holy Night, and I like his singing there. I like his performance on WDADU. but the version I heard of Metropolis on a boot called Consciously Unreal sucked really badly. He was losing the key all over the place. In fact, most of his singing on that second disc of the bootleg isn't that good. Sorry, I like chuck and all, but there are some places where his voice hurt me.

Well, since I finally got a correct response, for my Thought Industry question, I'll continue in that Drama-like song vein:

1 (easy): "Cruel and inhuman punishments are being carefully described in tiny paragraphs so they won't conflict with the Constitution (which, itself, is being modified in order to accomodate THE FUTURE)."

    2. (a bit harder): "If you are here seeking a future, the Futures Department has been temporarily shut down. Have a nice life."

    3. (probably the hardest, as we drop further back into the mix): "...you care where I am? ... hate everybody. You hate all of my friends."

Then feel free to sing the praises of the album the quote is from, if you feel it needs them.

    ---

BTW Mike Portnoy has quoted Terry Bozzio as one of his great influences. Now, from the one album I have heard Terry on (as drummer)--Sheik Yerbouti--the drumming is not amazing at all. I couldn't find what made him such an acclaimed drummer.

Which of TB's albums showcase this amazing, Portnoy influencing, drumming?

Okay, the Ytsejam's in desperate need of a new thread, so try this one on for size:

Our beloved DT is coming out with a completely new album this July. (This is ALL the info I have on it so far, so don't ask...)

What would you like to hear on it?

(We've already discussed covers. I think covers should be left on the stage where they belong...)

Idea #1: A song that's written by Derek. Hell, he could include lyrics too. Just a "Get to know him" song to see what exactly he can bring to the band. Certainly it should be keys-oriented with an extended keys solo. (Something we really haven't seen since I&W.) We know he has a cool grinding Hammond organ sound, but can he expand on this? Can he be smooth as well as crunchy? Only time will tell.

Idea #2: A song that features John Myung with a Kick-Ass bass groove. Something along the lines of a Les Claypool type song. They can do jazz, they can do bluesy stuff (in concert), but can they pull off funk? Should they? I'd really love to hear this next album have a bigger fatter bass. It's so often hidden and I'm afraid a lot of Myung's genius is lost because of a top-heavy mix. Could be just me. Finally, a complex bass solo would top it off nicely. Something really challenging. I mean, often John's solos are cool, but repetitive. He picks one hard thing to do and does it maybe 8 times in a row, switching chords once along the way... I believe his Metropolis solo fits this mold to a "T". Don't flame me, it's just my opintion...

Idea #3: WDADU and I&W are decidedly less "Heavy" than Awake and ACoS. Though ACoS is slightly less heavy than Awake. So where should this heaviness go on their next album? Hmmm. Personally I like the heavy stuff, but I can see a limit with DT. I'd say that The Mirror/Lie is about as heavy as I'd like to see them go. Maybe more of that type of style would be nice, but I still crave variety.

Idea #4: Keep up the complexity!!! (Should we expect anything less?) Possibly a Metropolis Pt. 2??? (Though was it Mike Portnoy who said that the "Part 1" wasn't meant to be taken seriously? Didn't he say that it was there to just give the song an endless feeling to it?) Anyway, a song or two with a completely insane minute or two of madness is ALWAYS fun!!! =)

Idea #5: Stick with the "Awake" producers on this one. The "Live" feel coupled with Mike's "true" drum sound is a force to be reckoned with!

Idea #6: In the solo after TLF on LiT ("Barfbag", right?) JP did some wonderful bluesy grooves. A song in a blues scale would be the perfect touch to the album. The lyrics wouldn't necessarily have to be depressing or anything... There are plenty of happy blues oriented songs out there. Check out, like, everything Aerosmith ever did!

Idea #7: Of course, they'd need to include their token insturmental song as well as their usual 12 minute epic. I mean, this is Dream Theater we're talking about isn't it??? ;)

Idea #8: Oooh! Harmonies! In ACoS, there are some places in the song where James overdubs his voice (that is his voice, right?) and produces some really powerful harmonies! The one Achilles Heel of DT, I think, is the vocals. I personally love James's voice, but you have to admit that a LOT of people don't like DT because of him. *Sigh* Sad but true. I'm not suggesting they dump him or anything. Maybe just more vocal harmonies. I Looooooove harmonies and DT doesn't use enough of them in my opinion...

Shoot! I could go on forever. Just some fun things to think about. Flame, comment, whatever. I can handle it. =)

    Hey, ryan:

Maybe you aren't reading this, but I feel that this needs to be said. I am probably the guy who posts messages in a row. Why don't I condense them into one message? Because I am not in digest mode. I respond to messages as I read them. I don't have any fancy mail programs that I can use, and even if I did, I am blind and cannot take advantage of them. I am only posting this to the list because I am sure that others are getting annoyed about my posts. I am really sorry, but at least I usualyl have something to say. Usually. And as far as moshing, the moshing thread was started on a DT related comment. If people mosh at DT shows, then it relates to DT. I can understand some frustration about the shape of the list, but your flame, meltdown, whatever has done nothing to improve the situation or get others to agree with you. You probably have turned off most of the people on this list by your abrassive posting. I am sorry that I post a lot of messages in a row. I don't do it on purpose, it's by circumstance. And yes, the Rush list has gotten pretty bad, too. It's a downtime for both bands and the discussion is going to have low points. Sheesh.

    Hey, Steven Johnson.

In your attack on the Beatles, I tend to agree with you except that their latest stuff is not Yellow Submarine. that was middle Beatles. You should lsten to songs off the white Album, Abbey Road and Let it Be. Very cool stuff and my favorite Beatles era. Hell, Abbey Road could very well be the Beatles masterpiece. Golden Slumbers. I almost call it progressive rock, imho. And I also agree with you on the Geddy Lee thing. Anyone who can play three instruments simultaneously has my respect.

Hello all, I'm starting to get together all of my 1995-released CDs for my annual compilation and since I put the songs on in order of release, I need to know the release dates for everything. There are only a couple albums whose release dates I'm not sure of...if anyone knows the exact dates each of these were released and could let me know, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance! :)

Hi everybody. This is my first post, so I'm probably doing something = wrong, but here goes. I want to help clear up the Metallica problem. The person that said = that Lloyd Grant was not a member is absolutely right. He simply played = a solo at the end of "Hit the Lights" as James was taking it to the = record company. He was never a member, though. It was Mustaine, = McGovney, Hetfield, and Ulrich in the beginning. Also, check the liner = notes of "Kill 'em All." They thank Mustaine and McGovney and credit = only them with being former members. Hope that this clears up the confusion. Thanks.

Hey, I got my copy of Acoustic Dreams this weekend!!! Oh yeah was I celebrating!!! Got to play it on my brand new JVC Cd-player!!!

Gratuitous applauds to Mike Bahr and all at Prism Records for this treasure. I'm seriously looking forward to recieving WDATU!!!

As a little review, I think that the best song is, by far, Lifting Shadows. It just sounds great. Not much more you can say.

Another thing...I found a copy of The Silent Man single at Best Buy. The song "Eve" is just awesome! Everyons should hear this...but wait! Oh yes, I would swear that they played this very song on the IAW tour. How do I know this? Well, on my crappy copy of the live recording they broadcast over 94.1 WHJY inProvidence a couple of years back they play something suspciously like it. The only problem is I can't find my copy of the the show, so I can't check.

Is there anyone out there that can verify this for me? Also, is there anyone in the New England area that has a good copy of the show and would be willing to dub it?

    HELP!!!

    Dear guys,

Hey there! Just wanted to let all of you know that I have a second e-mail address:

    jeff@hubble.carman.rhno.columbia.edu

This address appears to receive mail much quicker than the Columbia mailhub, so you can write me here also. I can only access this account from two computers: my own and my friend's mailhub where the mail is being sent to. But, my friend will soon make it possible for me to telnet to his computer so I can access this account from any terminal. Anyways, I'll talk to you guys later!

    Yours, Jeff =)

After a week long battle with my computer.... I am back on.

    Bad news though...

I lost my hard drive - including all my stored e-mail.

If you had sent me a request for a copy of the FAQ - or e-mail concerning changes, corrections, etc. - you had better send them again to be safe.

Hope everyone had a great Thanks day.

I've been checking out a copy of the Ronnie Scott's show. Sounds awesome. But I can understand why Damage Inc. didn't make it to the CD. The vocals are (IMHO) BAD.

    Later! Jason

    >Officer Albrecht so eloquently put it. They were firing blanks, but a >little piece of metal got lodged in the chamber of one of the guns (I >believe it was Funboy's), and when the gun was fired, the metal was >dislodged and it punched into Brandon's abdomen like a piece of shrapnel. What I heard (and this is coming from the *only* time I watched Unsolved Mysteries and they just happened to have a 15-20 minute story on Brandon and Bruce's deaths) is slightly different. The prop guys used a few different types of bullets while making the movie, but they can best be summed up in to two different categories...blanks: gun powder but no "bullet", and tamed down live ammo: bullets with *very little* powder. They varied the amounts of powder used in the blanks to get different types of blast effects. Anyway, the used this one gun to shoot live ammo one day (so you could see the bullet-head in the revolver from the front-side of the gun and see the bullet as it left the barrel) and one of the bullets from the tamed down live ammo got stuck in the barrel. For some strange reason, nobody checked the number of discarded bullets with the number of bullets fired to see if these numbers matched. Brandon may no have been killed... So, the prop manager had kept the gun in his car for the few weeks that it was not in use. Now, if I recall correctly, they had some mishap with the tamed down live ammo and the director banned all live ammo from the set. They were going to only use the blanks for the rest of the movie. A few weeks later, they needed another gun, so the prop manager got the one from his trunk, not realizing that it had not been used since before the live ammo was banned. Thinking it was safe, he *did not* check the barrel of the gun. When it was fired at Brandon Lee with a full blank, the bullet was dislodged from the barrel and hit him with the same force of a regular round.

    > While I'm at it, James O'Barr has a cameo in the movie: For those of you who don't know, James O'Barr wrote _The Crow_ graphic novel. Hopefully this won't have any Martian Language in it 'cause my modem is starting to act up.
