OK, a few more things have come up.
A new WDATU update will be along shortly. I am made to understand by the printers that the CDs are being assembled at this time, and should be on time for delivery.
There's a web page out there somewhere that claims to be mine: it's NOT. I don't even have web access. I'm sort of confused as to why it even exists. Furthermore, it's from somewhere in Pennsylvania or Michigan or somesuch thing when you all know durn well I live in sunny Arizona. (and get 100% of my internet access locally.) I don't have a page because I cannot even construct one on this server (yet) so I can only say that anything you see on a web page claiming to be mine will either be true or false, depending completely on blind chance.
Some people asked why Hairball was in the AD liner notes, and he replied that he figured it was a joke.. well, yes and no. I hate to disappoint you Hair dude, but the Hairball in AD was a different person... our singer for our band here in Chandler. His nickname changed to Herman Munster (which you wouldn't have seen until AQ, but since I have the laser printer now, the AQ cover will say "Dream Theater") I realized only AFTER Acoustic Dreams was finished that everyone on the Jam would think I meant _that_ Hairball and not another. Ah well. :)
I gave Scott Cook the best copy I could make of the Japan Pay-per-view video from 1/24/95 with the TV interviews before and after: he's asking $7 domestically or $10 internationally for copies. This is a fair price (I know from experience, remember the Rush Video Montage?) and it's an offer you should think about if you don't have a copy of the PPV video, as it's an incredible high-quality tape. Please don't come to me for copies as I'm busy making CDs (working on the master for Antiquities as we speak, finishing the mailings of AD and Cygnus also).
Those of you who were doing cover and liner art for Antiquities, please e-mail me right away, we need to finish that up so I can begin pre-production on it. Thanks much. Do I have anyone lined up for art for Rush "Legends", DT "Scenes From a Memory", or Public Affection "Death of a Dictionary" yet? If you're interested, e-mail me at durnik@indirect.com. Also, if you did art for me in the past, please drop me a bit of mail, I need to let you know about additional compensation for the art. Yes, those of you who do artwork for me get paid a commission on it, though that usually takes the form of free Cd(s). Capitalism works, eh? :)
speaking of which, Rush "Legends" is going to be the first ever Prism Records CO-production, as it is a joint effort between me and the master of audio Scott Hansen. We're trying to make it work as a 2-CD set with the entire show, but we don't know if it will happen that way or not. If it has to be a single disc, you can bet we'll pick out the "rare" songs from the sets and include _those_ in favor over "common" ones.
Finally, someone asked what the song "Past" on Subconscious was. It was a song called "Don't Look Past Me", a DT original with lyrics written by John Petrucci. That recording was from would-be vocalist Jonathan Hendricks' audition for DT back in 1990. I have versions of DLPM sang by him, Steve Stone, Chris Cintron, Chris Collins, Charlie Dominici, and James LaBrie (wow) and the Hendricks one had superior sound quality (by far) though I liked LaBrie's style on it the best. Opps, I take it back, Charlie dosen't do that song.

* All votes and voting records were deleted as soon as I'd recorded them, so don't worry, if you voted for a weird song and it got crushed, nobody will ever know. :)
* As you saw, Operation Mindcrime was the OVERWHELMING concept album winner here. It makes me wonder why Queensryche's recent tour was such a financial bust. The performance was pretty incredible as well. Bands with albums that have THIS kind of total core following usually have consistent, unwavering success, a la Van Halen. I guess that's what QR gets for making Promised Land (another good showing in this poll) so progressive. I'm glad they did, though... it's a very deep, mature album.
* In other news, the epic songs vote was a lot closer, as was evident above. At any given day during the poll, the top four songs would be in a different order than the day before. That marks these four as consistent favourites, and if I had cut the poll shorter by a day or extended it by a day, the results could well have been different. Consider them "mutual winners", based on the close numbers. All four of those were the vote leader at least once during the polling. This qualifies them as a category within themselves, hence the tier system.
* The #1-#2 concept album combination that came up the most was Operation Mindcrime-Little Earthquakes, which occurred 14 times! It was like deja vu all over again when I'd read those votes.
* The next most frequent #1-#2 were Mindcrime and either 2112 or Awake. Both combinations occurred ten times.
* Only 5 votes for Learning To Live did NOT place it in the #1 spot if they voted for it at all. Learning To Live was the overwhelming leader for concept songs in the number of #1 votes tallied, but if it wasn't a favourite, it usually wasn't even mentioned. Love it or hate it, I guess.
* Songs that gained their (surprisingly high) totals based entirely on #2-5 votes (no #1 votes registered): Speak To Me, Suite Sister Mary, The Camera Eye. Albums that did the same: 3 Sides, Brave, Pornograffiti.
* Epic songs #1-10 were created entirely by four bands. Eight of the ten were by Rush or Dream Theater.
* Someone with a good eye for statistics wanna break this down a bit more? I'd like to see points by band, differentials between those stats and the actual rankings, and so on. I didn't keep any extra info like what male vs. female Jammers voted for (didn't think to do it until that other guy posted his poll results, by then it was too late) but there's plenty that can be broken down from these results right here.
* I received votes from all the regulars (just about) and a whole slew of people who I've never seen or heard from before. Post, you Silent Men! (and Women!) The Jam is so much better off when there's something cool to talk about. Really!! In fact, I sort of encourage the inevitable verbal fencing that will follow this poll based on its results.

Jeez, here we go again, insulting one of the most talented vocalists around. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and say he's _the_ most talented vocalist in rock right now (before people freak and say Tate, _listen_ to Promised land with headphone, then listen to Awake).
If people are turned off by LaBrie because he sounds too 80's, then I guess they'd prefer some lame-ass grudge "singer" who has little/no talent. And I'm sure you can find lots of people who could match LaBrie's singing... not.
I hate when people complain about stupid things. Let's complain that the Johns are too talented now. They sound awful 80's too, ya know... :-p

Has anyone considered the fact that James is the way he is _because_ he's the front-man for the band? His persona is part of the role. Mike is the perfect foil to James, though I don't think James seems to be a jerk in person.
Who brought this up anyway? Who would dare state, nay, *think* such a thing? I think they should get rid of Derek. Keyboards are unecessary for DT (heck, for any rock band), anyway. Anyone who's heard _Awake_ can attest to that.

This makes me think of the Scorps'. It seems that Mathias and Rudolf often trade the lead even though M. is considered the "lead guitarist." Now here's a band that I think really defines what a standard 5-piece rock band is or should be. [Even Klaus takes up the rythm guitar to do "Coast to Coast" live (an awesome instrumental, btw)]. Too bad they've become irrelevant since _Crazy World_ [personally, I think since _Savage Amusement_ --- an album that doesn't have a throwaway song on it, probably their best ever (including the pre-Lovedrive stuff)].

First, I want to respond to the thread about James' voice. I think it's excellent. James' voice is certainly a factor in how much I like the band and DT is probably my favorite band right now (knocking Rush and Queensryche from the top!). All I can say is his voice is one thing that turned me ON to the band. I can't see how it can turn people away.

A band called "Exception" has covered LOADS of classical tunes. Tcshaikowsky's "1912" has been banged away by Cozy Powell. Hello fellow Jammers and Jammerettes (politically correct??)
well, I seem to have stirred up a real wasps' nest with my question about DT and a rhythm guitarist. Some of the private e-mails I received were very positive, while others suggested I was committing blasphemy. Keep the ideas coming though.
As some of you may remember, a few weeks ago, I asked what songs you would like to hear DT cover, and the results were interesting to say the least: I think they could get a couple of CDs out of that lot. So now this thread is dying down a bit, let me turn the question round, as it were, and ask you this:
- which band would you like to hear cover which DT song?
For example, I could imagine Type-O-Negative doing 'The Mirror' quite well, or even Pantera doing 'The Silent Man' (listen to what Pantera did with Sabbath's 'Planet Caravan' before you shoot me down in flames). Don't limit yourselves to just one song or band - let your imaginations work. We could come up with a very interesting DT tribute album. Please note that my understanding of a cover is *NOT* an exact copy of the original, but rather a new version that is inspired by the original while retaining the basic characteristics of the band doing the cover. In my eyes (ears?), a good cover pays tribute to the band being covered. OK, Jammers, fingers on the keyboards and let me/us have your ideas.
Note for Ben: nice try, that post with the name Marty Jameson (Jam 1163), but the fact that the message ID contained the string 'laussade' was just a bit of a giveaway. Besides which, *I* happen to like Nine Inch Nails, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

Well, I did too. And, the only thing that really bugs me about ACOS is the way that the acoustic guitars sometimes sound choked to death by the compression.

When I saw Ryche on the Building Empires tour (when they did O:M in its entirety), I was lucky enough to get floor seats. During O:M, I was pumped! I was singing, air drumming, and just loving every second of it! I look around me, and there's like, 200 people, just standing or sitting there, looking absolutely clueless...until SL at the end - Tate was apparently sick, and his voice had given out.
Philly - a town where people know what they want, and they want what they know.
Incidentally, I CAN'T place that "keep it the hell away from me" quote...and I'd like to know what it's from! I can't remember where it's from, and it would work perfectly with some of the production work I do. Email me, and let me know?
